Day 113 — Book 1, Chapter 14, §10

Day 113 — Book 1, Chapter 14, §10

0 — Orientation (1 minute) –

Yesterday: angels are real. Today: don't worship the messenger. §9 proved angels are ministering spirits. §10 turns the coin over — It remains to give warning. Calvin knows the psychology: the better you show people the angels' glory, the faster they bow to it. The slide is almost automatic: blessings come through angels → angels deserve honour → angels get what is Christ's and God's. Seven sentences of diagnosis, then one verse as the clincher — John himself fell, and the angel stopped him: See thou do it not… worship God.

Why examiners love it. Eight sentences, but packed: a colourless-looking opener (It remains to give warning…, extraposed it), an apt to V adjective frame, an absolute construction (extravagant eulogiums being pronounced…), a so… as to result frame (so exalted angels as to make them…), a superlative-in-disguise (nothing… more prone than to…), and an ironic concession (even Paul, even John). Plus three direction-flip traps: Calvin does not say angels are useless (he said the opposite yesterday); he does not say Paul denied angels; and John's mistake is called his own case — the danger is universal, not "heathen only".

Text traps. ⚠️ eulogiums (S3) = high-flown praises (a plural of eulogium; not "eulogies at funerals"). ⚠️ refulgence (S7) = radiance, brilliance (not "refuge"). ⚠️ stupid adoration (S7) = dull, senseless worship (not "dumb/silent"). ⚠️ superiors (S5) = those ranked above (a noun). ⚠️ contest (S5) = conflict, struggle (not "competition"). ⚠️ endowments (S6) = gifts, capacities. ⚠️ apt (S2) = inclined, liable (not "clever").

Today's 3 Big Points

  1. some who so exalted angels as to make them almost the superiors of Christ (S5) → so + V + O + as to + V = exalted them to such a degree that they made… (result/degree). Formula 1.
  2. there is nothing to which we are more prone than to prostrate ourselves… (S7) → nothing… more A than to V with a fronted preposition to which; the than-phrase is an infinitive. Restore: We are more prone to nothing than to prostrate ourselves… Formula 2.
  3. extravagant eulogiums being pronounced on angels without any authority from Scripture (S3) → absolute construction (noun + being + p.p.): a reason/accompaniment clause with its own subject. Formula 3.

1 — Full Text (⚠️ invariable) — 8 sentences –

It remains to give warning against the superstition which usually begins to creep in, when it is said that all blessings are ministered and dispensed to us by angels. For the human mind is apt immediately to think that there is no honour which they ought not to receive, and hence the peculiar offices of Christ and God are bestowed upon them. In this ways the glory of Christ was for several former ages greatly obscured, extravagant eulogiums being pronounced on angels without any authority from Scripture. Among the corruptions which we now oppose, there is scarcely any one of greater antiquity. Even Paul appears to have had a severe contest with some who so exalted angels as to make them almost the superiors of Christ. Hence he so anxiously urges in his Epistle to the Colossians (Col. 1:16, 20), that Christ is not only superior to all angels, but that all the endowments which they possess are derived from him; thus warning us against forsaking him, by turning to those who are not sufficient for themselves, but must draw with us at a common fountain. As the refulgence of the Divine glory is manifested in them, there is nothing to which we are more prone than to prostrate ourselves before them in stupid adoration, and then ascribe to them the blessings which we owe to God alone. Even John confesses in the Apocalypse (Rev. 19:10; 22:8, 9), that this was his own case, but he immediately adds the answer which was given to him, “See thou do it not; I am thy fellow servant: worship God.”

2 — Structure at a Glance –

[WARNING] S1 Beware the superstition: "all blessings are ministered by angels"
[MECHANISM] S2 Mind apt to infer: no honour is too much → Christ's & God's offices handed to angels
[HISTORY] S3–S4 Christ's glory obscured for ages; eulogiums with no Scripture warrant; oldest of corruptions
[APOSTOLIC] S5–S6 Even Paul fought it: angels almost above Christ → Colossians: Christ superior,
angels' endowments derived from him; don't forsake him for those who share "a common fountain"
[PSYCHOLOGY] S7 Divine glory shines in angels → we are prone to prostrate and credit them with what is God's alone
[CLINCHER] S8 Even John confessed it (Rev 19:10; 22:8–9): "See thou do it not… worship God."

Examiner's Eye. - ⚠️ Scope trap (S1): the target is the superstition that all blessings are ministered by angels as if they were the source/deserved honour — not the claim that angels minister at all (§9 affirmed that). - ⚠️ Person trap (S5/S8): Paul is the one who had a severe contest over exalting angels (Colossians); John is the one who confessed the fall-down in Revelation. Don't swap them. - ⚠️ Direction trap (S6): Christ is not only superior to all angels but their endowments are derived from him — Christ is the source; angels draw from a common fountain with us. - ⚠️ Cause trap (S7): the temptation arises because the refulgence of the Divine glory is manifested in them — the angels' dignity is real, which is exactly why the danger is real. - ⚠️ Date trap (S3–S4): several former ages and greater antiquity — it is an old corruption (Calvin does not call it a recent Roman invention here).

Among the corruptions which we now oppose, there is scarcely any one of greater antiquity.

전체 해설 더보기

One point: scarcely any one of greater antiquity = hardly any is older — a near-superlative (scarcely any… greater) that says this is among the very oldest corruptions; of greater antiquity = older (of + abstract noun as adjective, like of great importance). The claim sets up Paul's own experience in S5.

4 — Today's Grammar Formulas –

Formula 1 — so + V-ed + O + as to V (S5)

S so V-ed O as to V O' C
   = S V-ed O so much / to such a degree that S' V…

⚠️ Trap. (a) so modifies the verb (so exalted), not an adjective — compare so high as to…. (b) as to is not "regarding"; it signals result. (c) make + O + C (SVOC) inside: make them… the superiors. Drill. They honoured the angels so much that they made them almost equal to Christ. → They so honoured the angels as to make them almost equal to Christ.

Formula 2 — there is nothing to which S is more A than to V (S7)

There is nothing (to which) S is more A than to V
= S is more A to nothing than to V = The thing S is most A to is to V

⚠️ Trap. (a) The preposition to is fronted with which — don't look for a stranded to. (b) After than, the infinitive keeps the pattern prone… than to V. (c) Two verbs after than to (prostrate… and ascribe) belong to the same than-phrase. Drill. We most easily fall into pride. → There is nothing into which we more easily fall than pride / …than to trust in ourselves.

Formula 3 — Absolute construction: N + being + p.p. (S3)

Main clause, N being p.p. …
   = Main clause, since / because N were p.p. …

⚠️ Trap. (a) N is a new subject, not the main subject. (b) The construction expresses cause/means. (c) Don't treat being pronounced as a dangling participle — it is grammatical because it is absolute. Drill. Christ's glory was dimmed, because angels were praised without warrant. → Christ's glory was dimmed, angels being praised without warrant.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –

The doctrine at stake. Where does the credit for God's blessings go? §9: angels are real ministers. §10: ministers are not sources, mediators or objects of worship. The issue is divine glory and Christ's unique mediation (1 Tim 2:5). The slide Calvin describes is psychological: the more splendid the servant, the more the heart forgets the Master.

The argument shape. (1) Warning (S1). (2) The mind's inference (S2). (3) Historical result and antiquity (S3–S4). (4) Apostolic evidence — Paul's contest (S5–S6). (5) Universal vulnerability — even John (S7–S8). Note: §10 does not ban belief in angelic service; §11 will explain why God uses them at all — "for our weakness".

Historical lineage. The Colossian situation (Col 2:18, "worshipping of angels") is the biblical background Calvin has in mind with Paul. The Council of Laodicea (c. 4th century, canon 35) condemned "naming angels" in a cultic sense, and Church Fathers such as Theodoret of Cyrus discuss angel-worship in Phrygia. Augustine (Confessions 10; City of God 10) is cautious about spirits as mediators. The later medieval cult of angels (and Nicaea II's latria/dulia distinction) is the setting in which Calvin's Reformed critique lands, though §10 itself targets "superstition" generally rather than naming Rome.

Later reception. Reformed confessions keep the line: invocation of angels is rejected (e.g. Belgic Confession art. 12 affirms angels as ministering spirits but not as mediators; Westminster Confession 21.2 restricts religious worship to God alone). Barth (CD III/3 §51) stresses angels as God's servants pointing beyond themselves.

Guardrails against over-reading. (1) §10 does not deny that God sends help through angels (§§6–9 affirm it). (2) Even Paul appears to have had… is hedged — Calvin infers the opponents; don't turn it into a detailed history of the Colossian heresy. (3) Antiquity (S4) is not a claim about a specific Church practice, only that the corruption is very old. (4) Calvin never says angels are evil to honour — the problem is misdirected honour.

7 — Scripture Connections –

  1. S1/S2 — Heb 1:14; 1 Tim 2:5. Angels as ministering spirits (yesterday's thesis) vs. the one Mediator whose peculiar offices must not be transferred.
  2. S3/S5 — Col 2:18. "Let no man beguile you… in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels" (Gk thrēskeia tōn angelōn). The background for Paul's severe contest.
  3. S6 — Col 1:16, 20. "For by him were all things created… whether thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him"; reconciliation "by him, to reconcile all things unto himself". Calvin: Christ is superior and the source of angelic endowments.
  4. S6 — Jer 2:13 (echo). "They have forsaken me the fountain of living waters." Forsaking him… a common fountain echoes the imagery of the fountain and forsaking.
  5. S7 — Isa 42:8 (echo); Ps 115:1. "My glory will I not give to another"; "Not unto us… but unto thy name give glory." Behind blessings which we owe to God alone.
  6. S8 — Rev 19:10; 22:8–9. "And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant… worship God." (Gk horā mē; proskynēson). The clincher.
  7. S8 — Heb 1:6. "Let all the angels of God worship him" — the angels themselves worship the Son, which is why the angel refuses worship in Revelation.

How Calvin uses Scripture: by apostolic witness — he does not argue from reason that angel-worship is wrong; he lets Paul's contest and John's rebuke carry the case, then states the positive command (worship God).

8 — Exam Problems (출제자의 눈) –

① Grammar — one underlined part is wrong. Which?

Calvin says (A) it remains to give warning against the superstition which usually begins to creep in; (B) there is nothing to which we are more prone than prostrate ourselves before them; (C) some who so exalted angels as to make them almost the superiors of Christ; and (D) extravagant eulogiums being pronounced on angels without any authority from Scripture.

Answer: (B). Rationale: after prone… than, the infinitive marker must be kept: than to prostrate (Formula 2). (A) is correct: extraposed it remains to V. (C) is correct: so V O as to V (Formula 1). (D) is correct: absolute construction (Formula 3).

② Comprehension — which statement is consistent with §10?

(A) Calvin warns that because angels are mere "movements" God impresses, honouring them is harmless. (B) Calvin says that since angels are superior to Christ in rank, believers rightly ascribe blessings to them. (C) Calvin warns that the claim that all blessings are dispensed by angels tends to lead people to give angels the honour and offices that belong to Christ and God alone; he cites Paul's contest with the Colossian exalters of angels and John's confessed error, ending with the angel's command to worship God. (D) Calvin concludes that, since angels can be worshipped wrongly, believers should deny that angels serve God at all.

Answer: (C). Rationale: (A) direction-flip — that is the Sadducean reduction of §9, and the opposite of §10's concern. (B) direction-flip — Paul urges that Christ is superior to all angels (S6). (D) scope overreach — §10 warns against misdirected honour, not against angelic service (§§6–9 affirm it). (C) combines S1, S2, S5–S8.

③ Composition — use Formula 1 and Formula 3.

Compose one English sentence (≈25 words): Some people praised the angels so much that they made them nearly equal to Christ. Praise was being given without any warrant from Scripture.

Model answer: Some so exalted the angels as to make them almost the equals of Christ, extravagant praises being offered without any authority from Scripture. Examiner's intent: so V O as to V + absolute construction. Alternative accepted (Formula 2): There is nothing to which the human heart is more prone than to honour the servant above the Master.

9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –

One-line summary: After proving angels are ministering spirits, Calvin warns that the claim "all blessings come through angels" breeds a superstition that transfers Christ's and God's peculiar offices to them — an ancient corruption Paul fought (Colossians: Christ is superior and the source of their endowments) and into which even John fell until the angel said "worship God"; the grammar keys are so… as to (S5), nothing to which we are more prone than to V (S7), and the absolute construction (S3).

Homework (10 min).

  1. Structure restoration. Restore the base pattern of S7's main clause: there is nothing to which we are more prone than to prostrate ourselves before them. (Answer shape: We are more prone to nothing than to prostrate ourselves before them.)
  2. Composition. Write one sentence using so + V + O + as to V about a mistake of overvaluing a good gift.
  3. Preview (tomorrow). §11 begins This danger we will happily avoid, if we consider why it is that God… is wont to employ it… — watch the cleft why it is that…, be wont to V, and the answer: God uses angels not from need but as a help to our weakness (Elisha's servant, 2 Kings 6:17).

Where we stopped: Book 1, Ch. 14, §10 끝. 다음은 Book 1, Ch. 14, §11.
