Day 26 — Institutes I.5.§14 [직강]
0 Orientation — one minute –
Yesterday (§13) Calvin delivered the verdict — self-devised worship is apostasy, custom and antiquity are "too feeble and fragile a bond," and the chapter ended on the trumpet-note: God himself must bear witness to himself from heaven. Today §14 is the funeral of natural theology as a saving road. Calvin gathers everything since §1 — the bright manifestation, the lamps, the mirror — and pronounces it, for fallen eyes, in vain. Not because the lamps are dim: they "beam upon us from every quarter." The failure is ours. Creation throws out sparks, but they are quenched before they blaze. And then the crucial move: Calvin re-reads his own proof-texts. Hebrews 11:3 — the worlds display the invisible God, but it is by faith we understand. Romans 1:19 — the manifestation was never meant to be mastered by the wit of man; its one juridical effect is to leave us inexcusable. Acts 14 — God "left not himself without witness," wooing us with rain and fruitful seasons — and still men run down their own ways, which Calvin flatly renames deadly errors. This section is the doorway: one more § of guilt (§15), and then Chapter 6 opens the Scriptures.
Examiners love this section because Beveridge builds it on fronted-adverbial inversion, emphatic do with a fronted object, and an it-cleft buried inside indirect speech — three constructions that punish anyone reading on autopilot.

do:Some sparks … they do throw out. In S3 the object some sparks jumps to the head of the clause, and the verb takes emphatic do: they do throw out. This is concession-language: "sparks, yes — I grant that much — but…" The do concedes before the but strikes. - It-cleft inside indirect speech (that omitted):
it is by faith we understand. Hebrews 11:3 arrives as adds that it is by faith we understand that they were framed… The cleft isolates by faith as the only channel: not by sight, not by wit — by faith. Spot the omitted that after faith (it is by faith [that] we understand), and don't trip over the double that-clauses around it.

In vain for us, therefore, does Creation exhibit so many bright lamps lighted up to show forth the glory of its Author. Though they beam upon us from every quarter, they are altogether insufficient of themselves to lead us into the right path. Some sparks, undoubtedly, they do throw out; but these are quenched before they can give forth a brighter effulgence. Wherefore, the apostle, in the very place where he says that the worlds are images of invisible things, adds that it is by faith we understand that they were framed by the word of God (Heb. 11:3); thereby intimating that the invisible Godhead is indeed represented by such displays, but that we have no eyes to perceive it until they are enlightened through faith by internal revelation from God. When Paul says that that which may be known of God is manifested by the creation of the world, he does not mean such a manifestation as may be comprehended by the wit of man (Rom. 1:19); on the contrary, he shows that it has no further effect than to render us inexcusable (Acts 17:27). And though he says, elsewhere, that we have not far to seek for God, inasmuch as he dwells within us, he shows, in another passage, to what extent this nearness to God is availing. God, says he, “in times past, suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless, he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness,” (Acts 14:16, 17). But though God is not left without a witness, while, with numberless varied acts of kindness, he woos men to the knowledge of himself, yet they cease not to follow their own ways, in other words, deadly errors.

Examiner's Eye: trap number one is the target of "in vain" (S1). Calvin does not say creation's testimony is objectively dim or defective — the lamps are bright, beaming from every quarter. The phrase is in vain for us: the defect is in the beholder. An option reading "Calvin concludes that creation fails to display God's glory" reverses him — creation displays; we do not perceive. Trap two, S4: Calvin does not pit Hebrews against natural revelation; he says the invisible Godhead is indeed represented by such displays — the lack is eyes, supplied only by faith through internal revelation. Trap three, S5: Romans 1:19 is not evidence that man can attain true knowledge of God unaided — Calvin says its only effect (no further effect than) is to strip us of excuse. Sufficient to condemn, insufficient to save: reverse either half and you've flunked.

6 Background in 5 Minutes –
Here is where §14 sits in the architecture. Chapter 5 made two claims that look like they fight each other: creation reveals God brilliantly (§§1–10), and nobody reads it rightly (§§11–13). §14 is where Calvin shows they never fought at all — he re-reads the very texts that ground natural revelation (Heb. 11:3; Rom. 1:19–20; Acts 14; Acts 17) and finds inside each one the same double structure: real display, ruined reception. This is Calvin the exegete at his most characteristic: he doesn't out-argue the objection, he shows Scripture already contains it.
Watch the phrase internal revelation from God (S4). That is the germ of one of the Institutes' most influential doctrines — the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit (testimonium Spiritus Sancti internum, I.7.4–5), by which the believer is persuaded of Scripture's authority not by proofs but by God speaking within. Here, one book early, the same instinct: the problem is not evidence but eyes, and only God can perform the surgery. Augustine stands behind this — the De Civitate Dei's insistence that the mind's eye needs healing before it can bear the light, and the Confessions' "our heart is restless" wooing-God. The medieval tradition read Romans 1 as grounding a robust theologia naturalis; Aquinas built the Five Ways on the world's readability. Calvin does not deny the readability — he denies the readers. That is why in the twentieth century both sides of the Barth–Brunner quarrel claimed this section: Brunner pointed to the sparks (a real point of contact, Anknüpfungspunkt), Barth to the quenching (nothing usable survives). Read §14 honestly and you must say: the sparks are real and they save no one — objective revelation, subjective ruin, and the only exit is the Word (Ch. 6) made effective by the Spirit (Ch. 7). Guard the limit-line as always: Calvin is not teaching that pagans know nothing of God (they know enough to be guilty), nor that nature can carry an honest mind to salvation (it carries no one). Sufficient to condemn, insufficient to save — say it twice; it is the whole section.
One more historical note: the lamps image (S1) is Calvin's own beloved figure — in the 1559 French he speaks of creation's lampes — and it sets up the famous spectacles (I.6.1) tomorrow-plus-one: bright lamps, bad eyes, and a God who hands us glasses.
7 Scripture Connections –

Calvin's exegetical lever: the verse that makes the visible world a window on the invisible also names faith as the organ of sight. Calvin reads Scripture's word-order as doctrine — what stands "in the very place" matters.
- Rom. 1:19–20 — S5 (quoted/paraphrased). τὸ γνωστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ("that which may be known of God," 1:19) — Beveridge's that which tracks the Greek article + adjective. The feeling after (ψηλαφήσειαν, groping like the blind) is Calvin's picture of natural theology in action; the not far supplies S6's nearness. Same verse he used at §3 — now with the accent on the groping.
- Acts 14:16–17 — S7 (quoted). Paul at Lystra: rain, fruitful seasons, food, gladness as God's abiding witness (μαρτύρων... ἀγαθουργῶν, "witness, in that he did good"). Calvin hears courtroom language (witness) wrapped around courtship deeds (woos, S8) — testimony delivered as kindness.
- Echo: Rom. 1:24, 28 — S7–S8. God "suffered all nations to walk in their own ways" is Luke's gentler parallel to Paul's παρέδωκεν ("gave them up"); Calvin lets the two texts interpret each other — permission is already judgment.
Calvin's method in one line: he lets Scripture self-gloss — the same apostle, "in the very place" and "in another passage," supplies both the concession and the verdict.
