Day 32 — Book 1, Chapter 7, §1
0 — Orientation (1 minute) –
New chapter. And not just any chapter — the chapter. If Chapter 6 handed you the spectacles, Chapter 7 asks the question every skeptic since has asked: who says the spectacles are from God? This is the doctrine of the authority of Scripture, and it contains the most famous piece of Reformed theology in Book 1: the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit (testimonium Spiritus Sancti internum). That climax comes in §5. Today, §1, Calvin does what every great lecturer does before solving a problem: he makes you feel its full weight.
Here is the battlefield. Rome's controversialists — Johann Eck had put it in one line: Scripture is not authentic without the authority of the Church — argued that you know the Bible is God's Word because the Church tells you so. Calvin calls this "a most pernicious error," and in one long paragraph he unrolls its consequences: God's truth chained to human votes, the Holy Spirit insulted, tyranny smuggled in under the Church's name, consciences left trembling, and faith turned into a loan revocable at man's pleasure. Read the section summary at the head of the chapter — six refutations are listed. Today's § plants the objection and detonates the first round of them.
And watch the thesis sentence (S3). It carries the whole chapter's demand in one comparison: Scripture must be believed to have come from heaven "as directly as if God had been heard giving utterance to them." As if you had heard the voice. That "as if" is where the Spirit will have to do his work.
Today's 3 Big Points — I'm telling you now, you'll thank me in Period 4:
as + adverb + as if + S + had + p.p.— the counterfactual comparison (S3). We did not audibly hear God speak; we must believe as directly as if he had been heard giving utterance. Past-perfect subjunctive after as if = contrary to fact. This is the grammatical engine of the chapter's thesis.- Fronted phrase + inversion — twice (S8, S12).
On the determination of the Church ... depend both A and B(full inversion after a fronted prepositional phrase) andto what jeers ... is our faith subjected — into how great suspicion is it brought(double interrogative inversion). Beveridge front-loads the phrase and flips the verb. Learn to un-flip it. did not the Church regulate ...= an inverted conditional, NOT a question (S7). The killer trap of the day. It looks like a negative question; it is if the Church did not regulate all these things. Same family asHad he not come = If he had not come. Plus its cousinprovided (that)= as long as (S9).
Twelve sentences. One error, six wounds. Let's go.
1 — Full Text (the whole § — 12 sentences, verbatim) –
1. Before proceeding farther, it seems proper to make some observations on the authority of Scripture, in order that our minds may not only be prepared to receive it with reverence, but be divested of all doubt. When that which professes to be the Word of God is acknowledged to be so, no person, unless devoid of common sense and the feelings of a man, will have the desperate hardihood to refuse credit to the speaker. But since no daily responses are given from heaven, and the Scriptures are the only records in which God has been pleased to consign his truth to perpetual remembrance, the full authority which they ought to possess with the faithful is not recognised, unless they are believed to have come from heaven, as directly as if God had been heard giving utterance to them. This subject well deserves to be treated more at large, and pondered more accurately. But my readers will pardon me for having more regard to what my plan admits than to what the extent of this topic requires. A most pernicious error has very generally prevailed—viz. that Scripture is of importance only in so far as conceded to it by the suffrage of the Church; as if the eternal and inviolable truth of God could depend on the will of men. With great insult to the Holy Spirit, it is asked, who can assure us that the Scriptures proceeded from God; who guarantee that they have come down safe and unimpaired to our times; who persuade us that this book is to be received with reverence, and that one expunged from the list, did not the Church regulate all these things with certainty? On the determination of the Church, therefore, it is said, depend both the reverence which is due to Scripture, and the books which are to be admitted into the canon. Thus profane men, seeking, under the pretext of the Church, to introduce unbridled tyranny, care not in what absurdities they entangle themselves and others, provided they extort from the simple this one acknowledgement—viz. that there is nothing which the Church cannot do. But what is to become of miserable consciences in quest of some solid assurance of eternal life, if all the promises with regard to it have no better support than man’s Judgment? On being told so, will they cease to doubt and tremble? On the other hand, to what jeers of the wicked is our faith subjected—into how great suspicion is it brought with all, if believed to have only a precarious authority lent to it by the good will of men?
2 — Structure at a Glance (board work) –
[PROGRAM] S1 Goal of the chapter: minds PREPARED (reverence) + DIVESTED of all doubt
[PRINCIPLE] S2 Once acknowledged as God's Word → refusing belief = madness
[THESIS] S3 No daily oracles + Scripture = the ONLY record of God's truth
→ full authority ONLY IF believed to come from heaven
"as directly as if God HAD BEEN HEARD giving utterance"
[SCOPE GUARD] S4-5 Topic deserves more; my plan limits me (method, not evasion)
[THE ERROR] S6 "Scripture matters only as far as the Church's vote concedes"
— as if God's eternal truth COULD depend on man's will (absurd!)
[THEIR CASE] S7 Triple question (who assures? who guarantees? who persuades?)
... DID NOT the Church regulate = IF the Church did not regulate
[THEIR CLAIM] S8 On the Church's determination DEPEND reverence + canon (inversion)
[THE MOTIVE] S9 Profane men: any absurdity is fine, PROVIDED they extort the maxim
"there is NOTHING the Church CANNOT do" (= ecclesiastical omnipotence)
[WOUND 1] S10 What is to become of miserable CONSCIENCES, if promises rest
on man's judgment?
[WOUND 2] S11 Told "the Church guarantees it" — will they stop trembling? (No.)
[WOUND 3] S12 To what JEERS is our faith subjected — a PRECARIOUS authority,
LENT by the good will of men (a loan, not a possession)
Examiner's Eye — the traps they will set:
Trap 1 (S7): the fake question. did not the Church regulate all these things with certainty? A careless reader hears Calvin asking a rhetorical question and concluding that the Church did regulate these things. Wrong speaker, wrong mood. This is the opponents' argument, and the clause is an inverted conditional: if the Church did not regulate all these things. The distractor will quote it as Calvin's own affirmation of church authority. Direction-flip. Kill it.
Trap 2 (S6/S8): who holds this view? Both sentences carry distancing markers — it is asked, it is said. Calvin is reporting the pernicious error, not endorsing it. Any answer choice that says "Calvin teaches that the canon depends on the Church's determination" has ripped the quote out of its reported-speech frame.
Trap 3 (S3): the necessary condition. the full authority ... is not recognised, unless they are believed to have come from heaven. The claim is about the condition of recognition — not that Scripture lacks authority until believed. Authority is intrinsic; recognition of it hangs on the belief. A choice saying "Scripture has no authority until men believe it" overshoots — that would be the very error Calvin is refuting, relocated.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –
Where we are. Chapter 6 established that Scripture is necessary (the spectacles). Chapter 7 asks how Scripture is certain — and answers: not by the Church's decree but by the Spirit's inward testimony. This chapter is the classic Protestant locus on biblical authority, and §1 is its statement of the problem.
The opponent. The position Calvin reports — Scripture's authority rests on the Church's judgment — was live Roman polemic. Johann Eck's Enchiridion (1525) put it bluntly: Scriptura non est authentica sine authoritate ecclesiae ("Scripture is not authentic without the Church's authority"), often garnished with Augustine's line about the gospel and the Church's authority — which Calvin will defuse in §3. The Council of Trent's fourth session (1546), between Calvin's editions, hardened the two-source posture (Scripture and traditions, with the Church as judge of interpretation). Calvin's six-fold refutation — read the section summary at the chapter head: truth subjected to man's will; insult to the Spirit; tyranny; a mass of errors; subverted conscience; faith exposed to scoffing — is a point-by-point demolition of that program, and you can watch S6–S12 laying the six charges in order.
The coming answer — and why §1 must come first. Calvin's positive doctrine (§§4–5) is that Scripture is autopiston — self-authenticating: it carries its evidence in itself, and the Spirit who spoke it seals it on the heart. But self-authentication sounds like question-begging until you have seen every alternative fail. That is §1's function: if the Church's vote is the ground, then certainty is human-sized, consciences stay trembling, and the mockers are right. The as if God had been heard of S3 defines the required certainty; §§1–3 prove no human institution can supply it; §5 names what can.
Aftershocks. The Westminster Confession I.4–5 is practically a paraphrase of this chapter ("our full persuasion and assurance ... is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit, bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts"). Warfield made the chapter the centerpiece of his account of Calvin's doctrine of Scripture; Bavinck built his principium doctrine on it; Barth praised the testimonium while re-tooling it.
Limit lines — don't overshoot. Two fences. First, Calvin is not anti-church: the Church ministers recognition (as §2 will say, she bows to Scripture "as in duty bound") — she just doesn't manufacture authority. The historical church's role in recognizing the canon is not denied; what is denied is that recognition creates authority. Second, the testimonium is not private enthusiasm: Calvin ties Spirit to Word inseparably (wait for I.9 against the fanatics). Quote this chapter for subjectivism and you have flipped it.

- S3
no daily responses are given from heaven— the closed oracle era: contrast Exod 25:22 / Num 7:89 (the voice above the mercy seat), 1 Sam 28:6 (the LORD answering — or not — by dreams, Urim, prophets), and Heb 1:1–2 (πολυμερῶς καὶ πολυτρόπως — God who spoke "at sundry times and in divers manners" has now spoken finally). Calvin's point rides on redemptive history: the responsa era has given way to the record era. - S3
consign his truth to perpetual remembrance— Deut 31:24–26 (the book of the law deposited beside the ark as a witness) and Isa 30:8 ("note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever"). The same "public records" theology as I.6.2 (Day 29). - S6
the eternal and inviolable truth of God— Isa 40:8 ("the word of our God shall stand for ever"); Ps 119:89 ("For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven"). The adjectives are quotations in compression. - S7 the triple
who can assure ...— the questions presuppose what 2 Tim 3:16 (θεόπνευστος, God-breathed) and 2 Pet 1:21 (men "moved by the Holy Ghost") assert: the Spirit is the author — which is exactly why Calvin brands the questions an insult to the Holy Spirit. - S10
miserable consciences ... solid assurance— Rom 8:16 ("The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit") and 1 John 2:27 (the anointing that teaches) — the biblical seed of the testimonium that will bloom in §5. - S12
jeers of the wicked— Ps 42:3, 10 ("while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?"). Faith propped on human warrant hands the taunters their script.
How Calvin uses Scripture here: almost invisibly. §1 has no block quotations — instead the biblical furniture (oracles, deposited books, standing word, mocking neighbors) is built into the prose. The explicit artillery arrives in §2 with Eph 2:20.

① 어법 (밑줄 4개 중 틀린 것 하나)
On the determination of the Church, it is said, (A) depend both the reverence due to Scripture and the books to be admitted into the canon; yet the full authority of the word is not recognised unless it (B) is believed to have come from heaven as directly as if God (C) was heard giving utterance to it — and (D) did not the Spirit seal it within, no reader would rise above conjecture.

② 내용일치 (4지선다)
Which statement best represents Calvin's position in this section?
(a) Since the Church compiled the canon, the reverence due to Scripture properly depends on her determination. (b) Scripture possesses no authority at all until individual believers decide to grant it authority. (c) Scripture's full authority is not recognised among the faithful unless it is believed to have come from heaven as directly as if God's own voice had been heard speaking it. (d) Because the topic deserves fuller treatment, Calvin postpones the entire question of biblical authority to a later book.
✨ 답안 보기 (클릭)정답: (c) — S3의 재진술. (a)는 방향 뒤집기: S7–S8은 반대자들의 주장이며 it is said로 거리 표시가 되어 있다 (Trap 1·2).

9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –
One-line summary: Scripture's authority cannot hang on the Church's vote — for once the oracle era is closed, faith needs the written word to come as directly as if God had been heard giving utterance to it, and no human suffrage can close that gap. (Grammar: ① as ADV as if + had p.p. 반사실 비교 ② 전치구 도치 — On X depend both A and B / to what jeers is our faith subjected ③ did not S V = 도치 조건문 + provided = as long as.)
Homework (10 min):
- 구조 복원: S7을 평서 구조로 다시 쓰라 — 세 개의 who-절에 생략된 can을 복원하고,
did not the Church regulate ...를 if-절로 바꿔서. (모범: It is asked who can assure us ..., who can guarantee ..., and who can persuade us ..., if the Church did not regulate all these things with certainty.) - 영작: Formula 2(b)로 한 문장 — "얼마나 큰 위험에 그 교리는 노출되는가, 만약 그것이 인간의 승인에만 의존한다면?" (모범: To how great danger is that doctrine exposed, if believed to rest on human approval alone?)
- 내일 예습 한 줄: §2 첫 문장은 "These ravings are admirably refuted by a single expression of an apostle." — 단 한 구절(엡 2:20)로 "헛소리"(ravings)를 뒤집는다. 그 구절이 무엇일지 미리 찾아 놓고 올 것.
