Day 33 — Book 1, Chapter 7, §2
0 — Orientation (1 minute) –
Yesterday Calvin laid out the wound. Today he swings. And look at how he swings — one verse. Not a treatise, not a catalogue of Fathers. a single expression of an apostle. Ephesians 2:20: the Church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. That's it. That's the whole refutation of §1's "pernicious error," and the logic is so short you can hold it in one hand: a foundation cannot be laid by the house that stands on it. The French edition even spells it out in a footnote — comme le fondement va devant l'édifice, as the foundation goes before the building.
Then watch what a good debater does next. He does not celebrate. He immediately asks: what will they say back? And he states their comeback better than they would (S4): "Fine — grant that apostolic doctrine precedes the Church. But which books are apostolic? That question the Church must settle." This is the canon objection, and it is the strong form of the Roman case. Calvin answers it in S5, and then — this is the sentence to memorize — draws the boundary line in S7 that has governed Protestant thinking ever since: when the Church receives Scripture, she does not make that authentic which was otherwise doubtful — she bows. Recognition, not manufacture. Ministerial, not magisterial.
And the finish (S8–S9) is pure Calvin: an analogy so homely it feels like cheating. How do you know Scripture came from God without a church decree? The same way you know light from darkness, white from black, sweet from bitter. Nobody convenes a council to certify that honey is sweet. This is the seed of autopistia — Scripture as self-authenticating — which flowers in §5.
Today's 3 Big Points — write them down now:
the former ... the latter+must have had(S3). Must here is not obligation — it is logical necessity ("it follows that it must have..."), and must + have + p.p. pins that necessity onto the past. Pair it with S5's counterfactualbut for this, the Church herself never could have existed.- Negative fronting, two flavors (S4, S6).
Nor is there any room for the cavil— negative adverb first, auxiliary jumps ahead of the subject. AndNothing therefore can be more absurd than X— negative + comparative = superlative: X is the most absurd thing there is. - The separated relative:
make that authentic which was ...(S7). The antecedentthatand its relativewhichget pried apart by the adjectiveauthentic. Restore it: make authentic that which was doubtful. Then S9's cousin — the pro-verbdowith gapping inside anas ... ascomparison.
Nine sentences. One verse, one boundary line, one taste test. Let's go.
1 — Full Text (the whole § — 9 sentences, verbatim) –
2. These ravings are admirably refuted by a single expression of an apostle. Paul testifies that the Church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,” (Eph. 2:20). If the doctrine of the apostles and prophets is the foundation of the Church, the former must have had its certainty before the latter began to exist. Nor is there any room for the cavil, that though the Church derives her first beginning from thence, it still remains doubtful what writings are to be attributed to the apostles and prophets, until her Judgment is interposed. For if the Christian Church was founded at first on the writings of the prophets, and the preaching of the apostles, that doctrine, wheresoever it may be found, was certainly ascertained and sanctioned antecedently to the Church, since, but for this, the Church herself never could have existed. Nothings therefore can be more absurd than the fiction, that the power of judging Scripture is in the Church, and that on her nod its certainty depends. When the Church receives it, and gives it the stamp of her authority, she does not make that authentic which was otherwise doubtful or controverted but, acknowledging it as the truth of God, she, as in duty bounds shows her reverence by an unhesitating assent. As to the question, How shall we be persuaded that it came from God without recurring to a decree of the Church? it is just the same as if it were asked, How shall we learn to distinguish light from darkness, white from black, sweet from bitter? Scripture bears upon the face of it as clear evidence of its truth, as white and black do of their colour, sweet and bitter of their taste. ⚠️ Text note (transcription, not Calvin): our local Beveridge file carries two scanning slips — Nothings therefore (S6) for Nothing therefore, and as in duty bounds shows (S7) for as in duty bound, shows. I quote the file verbatim as the rule requires, but read them as the corrected forms. The footnote marker 18 after existed has been stripped (it is the French gloss on foundation-before-building, cited in Period 6).
2 — Structure at a Glance (board work) –
[THE WEAPON] S1 One apostolic phrase refutes the whole "ravings" of §1
[THE VERSE] S2 Eph 2:20 — the Church is BUILT ON the foundation
of the apostles and prophets
[THE INFERENCE] S3 doctrine = foundation → the FORMER (doctrine) must have had
its certainty BEFORE the LATTER (Church) began to exist
[THEIR COMEBACK] S4 "Grant the origin — but WHICH writings are apostolic?
That stays doubtful till the Church's judgment steps in."
→ Nor is there any room for the cavil (rejected on arrival)
[THE ANSWER] S5 If the Church WAS founded on those writings, then that doctrine,
wherever found, was already ascertained & sanctioned BEFORE her
— since BUT FOR THIS she could never have existed at all
[VERDICT] S6 Nothing more absurd than the fiction: judging-power in the Church,
certainty hanging on her NOD
[THE BOUNDARY] S7 She receives + stamps — but does NOT make authentic
what was doubtful; she ACKNOWLEDGES and assents (duty, not decree)
[REDUCTIO] S8 "How know it's from God without a church decree?"
= "How do we learn to tell light from dark, sweet from bitter?"
[AUTOPISTIA] S9 Scripture bears the evidence ON ITS FACE — as white/black do
of colour, sweet/bitter of taste
Examiner's Eye — the traps they will set:
Trap 1 (S4): whose sentence is inside the that-clause? Nor is there any room for the cavil, that ... it still remains doubtful what writings are to be attributed to the apostles and prophets, until her Judgment is interposed. Everything after that is the opponents' cavil, and the main clause destroys it. The distractor will lift "it still remains doubtful what writings are to be attributed to the apostles and prophets" and hand it to Calvin as his own concession. Direction-flip. Kill it.
Trap 2 (S7): the overshoot. Calvin says the Church receives it, and gives it the stamp of her authority — that is granted, in his own voice. What he denies is one verb: she does not make it authentic. Any option reading "Calvin denies that the Church has any role in receiving or attesting Scripture" has swapped constitute for recognize and blown past the scope.
Trap 3 (S3): the former/latter swap. the former = the doctrine of the apostles and prophets. the latter = the Church. Reverse them and the sentence says the Church's certainty preceded the doctrine — the exact position Calvin is demolishing. Examiners love a former/latter inversion because it costs one word and flips the whole argument.
Trap 4 (S9): "so it's just rational self-evidence?" Careful. The evidence is objectively as plain as colour and taste — but §1 already told you consciences still tremble, and §5 will say the Spirit must seal it. Objective clarity, subjective blindness: the same pairing as I.5 (the creation blazes; we walk blindfold). An option that makes Calvin a rationalist here has read S9 without the chapter.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –
The move Calvin is making. §1 diagnosed; §2 amputates. And the instrument is a single verse read for its architectural logic, not its devotional warmth. Eph 2:20 — built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets — yields one inference: foundations precede buildings. The French edition of 1560 adds the gloss in the margin: comme le fondement va devant l'édifice. Calvin then converts "apostles and prophets" into "the doctrine of the apostles and prophets" (S3), which is standard for him — 1 Cor 3:11 makes Christ the only foundation, so the apostles function as foundation precisely as preachers of Christ. Their doctrine survives in writings; therefore the argument is about Scripture.
Why S4 is the section's real hinge. Anyone can win against a weak opponent. Calvin, having scored, immediately supplies Rome's best comeback: concede the historical priority of apostolic doctrine — the disputed question is the canon. Which writings are apostolic? Only the Church can say. This is Eck's Enchiridion position sharpened, and it would be Trent's fourth session (1546) codified. Calvin's answer in S5 is not a list of canonical criteria; it is a point about the direction of dependence. Certainty is a property the doctrine already possessed wheresoever it may be found; a later act of identification locates that property, it does not create it. Compare: a jeweller who identifies gold does not thereby make it gold. And then the existence-argument — but for this, the Church herself never could have existed — turns the opponent's institution into a witness for the prosecution.
The line everyone quotes: S7. She does not make that authentic which was otherwise doubtful or controverted. This becomes settled Protestant doctrine within a generation. The Belgic Confession (1561), art. 5: we receive these books "not so much because the Church receives and approves them as such, but above all because the Holy Ghost witnesseth in our hearts." Westminster I.4: the authority of Scripture "dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God." The technical vocabulary later dogmaticians attach to it — the Church's authority is ministerial (serving) not magisterial (ruling) — is Calvin's not make authentic / but acknowledge in Latin dress.
S9 and the word to come. Bears upon the face of it as clear evidence of its truth is autopistia before the term is used: Scripture is autopiston, self-authenticating (§5 will say it "carrying its own evidence along with it, deigns not to submit to proofs and arguments"). Turretin later systematizes: Scripture is the principium cognoscendi theologiae, a first principle of knowing — and first principles, by definition, cannot be derived from anything prior. Warfield made this chapter the centre of his account of Calvin's bibliology; Plantinga's Reformed epistemology (belief in God as properly basic, and the internal instigation of the Holy Spirit in Warranted Christian Belief) is a modern philosophical descendant of exactly this pairing of self-evidence and Spirit-wrought perception.
Two limit lines — do not overshoot.
First fence: Calvin is not dismissing the Church's historical role. S7 concedes, in his own voice, that she receives it, and gives it the stamp of her authority. He never denies that the visible Church transmitted, collected and attested the canon; he denies that this attestation constitutes authority. Anyone using this section to say "the canon has nothing to do with the Church" has read make as receive.
Second fence: S9 is not rationalism. The light/colour/taste analogy makes the evidence objectively plain — and §1 has already told you that consciences still tremble, §5 will say that only the Spirit's inward seal produces conviction, and I.5 established the pattern (creation blazes; humanity walks blindfold). Objectively self-evident, subjectively unreceived apart from the Spirit. Quote S9 as a proof that unaided reason can establish Scripture's divinity and you have made Calvin an evidentialist in the one chapter written to deny it. The tongue must be alive for the honey to taste sweet.

Calvin reads the genitive as the foundation laid by them — i.e. their doctrine — not the foundation consisting of their persons. Note what he leaves unquoted but is standing right there: Christ the cornerstone. The foundation is apostolic doctrine because it is the doctrine of Christ.
- S2–S3 — 1 Cor 3:11 ("other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ"). This is what forces Calvin's persons→doctrine substitution. If Christ alone is the foundation, then Eph 2:20 must mean the apostolic preaching of Christ. Two verses locking each other in place.
- S3 — the priority logic — Matt 16:18 ("upon this rock I will build my church"). Calvin's opponents' favourite text is quietly conceded and reversed: even here the Church is what gets built, never the builder.
- S7
acknowledging it as the truth of God ... unhesitating assent— 1 Thess 2:13: "ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God" (οὐ λόγον ἀνθρώπων ἀλλὰ … λόγον θεοῦ). Paul describes exactly the posture Calvin assigns the Church: receiving as, not making into. - S8
light from darkness— Gen 1:4 ("God divided the light from the darkness"): the first distinction in creation, prior to every human judgment. And Isa 5:20 — "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light" — the possibility of getting even this wrong, which is why §5 must come. - S8–S9
sweet ... bitter— Ps 19:10 ("sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb" — of the law), Ps 34:8 ("O taste and see that the LORD is good"), 1 Pet 2:3. Calvin's taste analogy is not borrowed from philosophy; it is the Psalter's own way of talking about the Word. - S9 the trained faculty — Heb 5:14, τὰ αἰσθητήρια γεγυμνασμένα ("senses exercised to discern both good and evil"). The unstated other half of the analogy: self-evident objects still require a functioning organ. §5's testimonium is the giving of the organ.
How Calvin uses Scripture here: differently from §1. §1 had no block quotation at all — biblical furniture built invisibly into the prose. §2 opens with a single explicit citation and then reasons from its structure rather than its wording. One verse, one architectural implication, and he never returns to it. That is Calvin's characteristic exegetical economy: find the verse whose logic settles the matter, and refuse to pile on.

① 어법 (밑줄 4개 중 틀린 것 하나)
(A) Nor is there any room for the cavil that the Church confers what she receives; for if she was founded on the apostolic doctrine, that doctrine (B) must have had its certainty before she existed, since, but for this, she never (C) could exist at all. She therefore does not make (D) that authentic which was otherwise controverted, but assents to it as in duty bound.

(B)는 과거를 향한 논리적 필연 must have p.p. — 맞음 (Formula 2a). (D)는 분리 관계사 make that ... authentic which ...의 정상 어순 — 맞음 (Formula 3a). 출제 의도: but for를 단순 조건으로 착각하면 시제를 낮춰 쓰고 지나간다. 실제 오답률 최상위 유형.
② 내용일치 (4지선다)
Which statement best represents Calvin's position in this section?
(a) Since which writings are apostolic remains doubtful until the Church's judgment is interposed, the canon rests on ecclesiastical decree. (b) The Church has no part whatever in receiving Scripture or attesting it, and any stamp of her authority is an impiety. (c) The Church, in receiving Scripture, does not make authentic what was doubtful, but acknowledges as God's truth a doctrine whose certainty preceded her own existence. (d) Scripture's truth can be established by argument as securely as colour is established by sight, so the testimony of the Spirit is unnecessary.
✨ 답안 보기 (클릭)정답: (c) — S3 + S5 + S7의 종합. (a)는 방향 뒤집기: 그 문장은 S4의 the cavil, 즉 반대자의 주장이며 Nor is there any room for 로 즉시 기각된다 (Trap 1). (b)는 범위 초과: S7이 교회가 receives it, and gives it the stamp of her authority한다고 칼빈 자신의 입으로 인정한다 — 부정되는 것은 오직 make ... authentic 하나뿐 (Trap 2).

9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –
One-line summary: One verse settles it — the Church is built on the apostolic foundation, so that doctrine's certainty must have preceded her existence; therefore when she receives Scripture she does not make authentic what was doubtful but bows to it, since Scripture bears its evidence on its own face as plainly as sweet and bitter bear theirs. (Grammar: ① must have p.p. 추론 + the former/the latter + but for 반사실 ② Nor is there 부정 도치 & nothing can be more X than = 최상급 ③ 분리 관계사 make that X which + 대동사 do gapping.)

(모범: She does not make authentic that which was otherwise doubtful or controverted; / but, acknowledging it as the truth of God, she shows her reverence, as in duty bound, by an unhesitating assent.) (모범: Nothing can be more absurd than the notion that the Church makes canonical what is already the Word of God, as little as a balance does heavy what already has its weight.)
- 내일 예습 한 줄: §3 첫 문장은 "I am aware it is usual to quote a sentence of Augustine in which he says that he would not believe the gospel, were he not moved by the authority of the Church." — 로마 측의 마지막 카드, 어거스틴 인용이 나온다.
