Day 48 — Book 1, Chapter 8, §12
0 — Orientation (1 minute) –
I left you a landmine question overnight, and today you get to watch Calvin walk straight across the minefield without losing a leg:
Calvin demolished Rome's logic in I.7 — "the Church's approval is what gives Scripture its authority." Yet §12 calls the Church's consent as evidence. Contradiction?
Answer it before Calvin does. The foundation and the help sit in different chairs in the courtroom. In I.7 Rome tried to seat the Church on the judge's bench — authorizing Scripture from above. Calvin threw her off it. In §12 he seats her in the witness stand — testifying from below. A witness does not create the truth of the case; a witness confirms it. Watch the very first sentence do this with surgical precision: the consent of the Church is not without its weight — weight, evidential weight. Not foundation. Not authority. Weight on a scale that was already tipped by the Spirit (I.7.4–5). If you catch that one word, you have caught the whole section — and defused the exam's favorite trap.
And notice what the argument itself looks like today. §11 heard the writings and the writers. §12 opens the history books: fifteen centuries of uniform obedience, waves of attackers — sophists' pens, emperors' swords — and Scripture flourished like the palm tree and continued invincible. Then the geography: not one city, not one nation, but a holy league of peoples with nothing else in common. Calvin is running Gamaliel's test at full scale (Acts 5:38–39): if this work were of men, it would have come to nought. It didn't. Draw the conclusion.
The shape in one breath:
S1 the ledger entry ── "Add that the Church's consent has weight"
S2 exhibit A ── ages of obedience + survival vs Satan
S3–S4 the siege ── sophists' pens (S3), princes' swords (S4)
S5–S6 the inference ── could it have resisted by human aid? →
divine origin, its own energy
S7–S8 exhibit B ── not one city/nation: a worldwide holy league
S9 exhibit C ── agreement of the diverse + piety of the lights
Today's 3 Big Points — write them down now:
- The ledger imperative:
Add, moreover, that ...(S1) and its clipped returnAdd that ...(S7). An imperative with no drama in it — Calvin is not commanding you to do anything; he is a bookkeeper telling you to enter the next item in the column of proofs. The whole that-clause is the object ofAdd. ⚠️ Don't read it as an emotional appeal; read it as accounting. And watch the second occurrence shed its robes: S1 arrives formal (, moreover, ... for the best of reasons,), S7 arrives bare (Add that) — the bookkeeper is moving faster because the column is filling up. - The litotes battery — three double negatives in one section, all meaning MORE, not less.
not without its weight(S1),not to be accounted of no consequence(S2),no small weight(S9). ★ Litotes = negating the negative to assert the positive with reserve — the rhetoric of a man understating what he could shout. ⚠️ The exam trap writes these as concessions ("Calvin admits the consent has only slight weight") — direction flip. Kill it on sight.not without weight= weighty;no small weight= great weight. - The modal-perfect museum opens two new wings (S5, S9). Day 46 gave you the counterfactual statement (
must have utterly perished), Day 47 the inference (must have been the teacher). Today: ★ S5how could it have resisted if it had trusted only to human aid?= counterfactual INTERROGATIVE — a rhetorical question whose only answer is it could not have — negation delivered as a question. ★ S9an agreement which a Divine Providence alone could have produced=alone could have p.p.— nothing else could have produced it; it exists; therefore Providence did — an inference wearing a counterfactual's clothes. ⚠️ Same verb cluster, four days, five values. The frame decides. Every time.
Nine sentences. S1, S2, S5 and S9 take the heavy time. Let's go.
1 — Full Text (the whole § — 9 sentences, verbatim) –
12. Add, moreover, that, for the best of reasons, the consent of the Church is not without its weight. For it is not to be accounted of no consequence, that, from the first publication of Scripture, so many ages have uniformly concurred in yielding obedience to it, and that, notwithstanding of the many extraordinary attempts which Satan and the whole world have made to oppress and overthrow it, or completely efface it from the memory of men, it has flourished like the palm tree and continued invincible. Though in old times there was scarcely a sophist or orator of any note who did not exert his powers against it, their efforts proved unavailing. The powers of the earth armed themselves for its destruction, but all their attempts vanished into smoke. When thus powerfully assailed on every side, how could it have resisted if it had trusted only to human aid? Nay, its divine origin is more completely established by the fact, that when all human wishes were against it, it advanced by its own energy. Add that it was not a single city or a single nation that concurred in receiving and embracing it. Its authority was recognised as far and as wide as the world extends—various nations who had nothing else in common entering for this purpose into a holy league. Moreover, while we ought to attach the greatest weight to the agreement of minds so diversified, and in all other things so much at variance with each other—an agreement which a Divine Providence alone could have produced—it adds no small weight to the whole when we attend to the piety of those who thus agree; not of all of them indeed, but of those in whom as lights God was pleased that his Church should shine. ✅ Text note. Our source file source/Institutes_Beveridge_FULL.txt carries §12 at lines 3773–3797. Page furniture removed as noise, per the standing rule: the page number 87 and the two-line running header (CHAPTER 8. - THE CREDIBILITY OF SCRIPTURE SUFFICIENTLY PROVED IN SO / FAR…, lines 3780–3782, with their blank lines) — ⚠️ note where the page break lands: inside S2, between it has and flourished like the palm tree. The longest sentence of the day is split across the page turn, mid-clause — third day running that the furniture falls mid-sentence; keep trusting the syntax, not the page. Two line-break hyphenations repaired: at- / tempts (lines 3787–3788) → attempts; diver- / sified (lines 3793–3794) → diversified — ⚠️ both are plain repairs, no genuine compound today (contrast Day 47's money-table, which kept its hyphen). The dash in S8 (extends—various) and the pair of dashes in S9 (each other—an agreement ... produced—it adds) are the source's own em-dashes — they carry structure today (S8's absolute construction, S9's appositive island), so respect them. One paragraph only — no Beveridge break; the ledger runs unbroken from first entry to last. ⚠️ Now run the standing Day 42 checks. Every stranded comparative, every so/too/such without a partner, every pronoun without an antecedent. Correlatives: **as** far and **as** wide **as** the world extends (S8) ✓ — a doubled equative sharing one as-tail; nothing stranded. **so** many ages (S2) — ⚠️ no that-partner, and none needed: so many here is plain quantity ("such a great number"), not degree-with-result. **so** diversified ... **so** much at variance (S9) — same verdict: intensifiers without result clauses; the degree anchor is the standing miracle of their agreeing at all. **more** completely (S6) — ⚠️ mind the ellipsis: more completely than mere survival would establish it; the comparison reaches back to S2–S5's defensive argument. Flag, resolve, move on. Pronouns: it (S2, seven times by the end) = Scripture throughout — ⚠️ but the FIRST it (it is not to be accounted) is a dummy: extraposition subject for the twin that-clauses. Sort the dummies from the real ones or S2 dissolves. their (S3) = the sophists and orators — ⚠️ notional plural: the antecedent is scarcely a sophist or orator (singular in form), but sense demands plural; Beveridge rides the sense. their (S4) = the powers of the earth ✓. it adds (S9) — ⚠️ flagged: ambient/anticipatory it pointing forward to the when-clause (attending to their piety is what adds the weight), not Scripture this time. them / those (S9 tail) = the agreeing minds; of all of them ... of those both hang from the piety — supply it: the piety, not of all of them, but of those ... Trap words on patrol: consequence (S2) = importance — nothing follows from anything. publication (S2) = making public (first promulgation) — no printing press in Moses' day. concurred (S2, S7) = agreed together (con + currere, ran together) — no traffic accident. of any note (S3) = of any distinction — nobody is writing music. unavailing (S3) = useless, without effect (a + valere) — not "unavailable." Nay (S6) = escalation: "more than that" — not a refusal. energy (S6) = inherent operative power (Gk. energeia) — not enthusiasm. league (S8) = alliance, covenant (Lat. ligare, to bind) — not a sports division and not a unit of distance. All eight in Period 5. ℹ️ On the count. Nine sentences, one paragraph. The two giants are S2 (the twin-that exhibit, split by the page turn) and S9 (the double-dash appositive with the semicolon tail). The semicolon inside S9 does NOT end a sentence — the tail (not of all of them ...) is an elliptical afterthought still hanging from the piety. The count stands at 9.
2 — Structure at a Glance (board work) –
A bookkeeper's ledger — two Add entries, each followed by its supporting evidence:
S1 ENTRY 1 ── Church's consent: not without weight
(⚠️ weight ≠ foundation — I.7 intact)
S2 EVIDENCE ── ages uniform in obedience + survival:
Satan & world attack → palm tree, invincible
S3–S4 THE SIEGE ── pens: every sophist/orator, unavailing (S3)
swords: powers of the earth, smoke (S4)
S5–S6 INFERENCE ── rhetorical counterfactual: human aid? (S5)
→ Nay: divine origin, its own energy (S6)
S7 ENTRY 2 ── "Add that": not one city, not one nation
S8 EVIDENCE ── worldwide recognition — the holy league
S9 CAPSTONE ── diverse minds agreeing (Providence alone
could have produced) + piety of the lights

⚠️ 선지에 이런 게 나온다: "Calvin here reverses his earlier position and grounds the authority of Scripture on the Church's approval." §13 이 이를 명문화한다(secondary helps to our weakness).
⚠️ "Calvin concedes that the Church's consent carries only slight weight" ✗ — not without its weight(S1)·not ... of no consequence(S2)·no small weight(S9)는 모두 절제된 강조다: 상당한 무게가 있다. (Big Point 2).
⚠️ "Calvin leaves open the question whether Scripture survived by human aid" ✗ — how could it have resisted if it had trusted only to human aid? S6 의 Nay 가 즉시 도장을 찍는다: 인간의 도움이 아니라 its own energy.
⚠️ "Calvin praises the piety of all who have ever agreed to Scripture" ✗ — 본문이 명시적으로 자른다: not of all of them indeed, but of those in whom as lights God was pleased that his Church should shine.

"The powers of the earth armed themselves for its destruction, but all their attempts vanished into smoke."
One point and we move: vanished into smoke = came to nothing — and the image is loaded twice over. The attackers lit real fires (Diocletian burned the books), and their attempts, not the books, became the smoke; behind it stands the Psalter's verdict on the wicked — into smoke shall they consume away (Ps 37:20) — and Psalm 2's kings of the earth setting themselves in vain. The pens failed (S3); now the swords fail (S4). Two-front siege, zero progress.

Modern English
Moreover, granted that the greatest weight belongs to this agreement of minds so diverse — and in everything else so much in conflict — an agreement only divine Providence could have brought about, it adds considerable weight when we consider the godliness of those who agree: not all of them, certainly, but those in whom God chose to make his Church shine as lights.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –
The doctrine at stake: what a "help" may do that a "foundation" may not. Chapter 7 settled WHERE certainty comes from: the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit — not the Church's decree. Chapter 8 has been listing adminicula — secondary helps, props for our weakness — and §12 adds the boldest one: the Church herself, re-admitted through the servants' entrance. Underline the difference: Rome says the Church's consent makes Scripture authoritative; Calvin says the Church's consent confirms to us what was authoritative before she spoke. The witness stand, not the bench. §13 will bolt this down in so many words: these proofs are secondary helps to our weakness, useless to produce faith on their own. ⚠️ Over-reading guardrail: do not turn Calvin into an evidentialist. The survival argument persuades the pious and silences the slanderer; it converts nobody. If you leave today thinking Calvin proves inspiration from church history, you have put the cart before the horse he spent Chapter 7 harnessing.
The history behind the sentences. S3's sophists have names: Celsus (2nd c., The True Word, dismantled by Origen), Porphyry (3rd c., fifteen books Against the Christians), Lucian the satirist, the emperor Julian "the Apostate" with his Against the Galileans. Now the delicious irony Calvin's readers knew: Porphyry's attack survives only in fragments — the empire ordered it burned in 448 — while the text he attacked sits open on every lectern in Europe. The attack was effaced; the target proved invincible. S4's powers of the earth: above all Diocletian, whose edict of 303 ordered every copy of the Scriptures surrendered and burned — the one imperial persecution aimed at the book itself, efface it from the memory of men as literal state policy. Twenty-two years later Constantine was commissioning fifty Bibles for Constantinople at public expense. Smoke, indeed. And S8's holy league rings with Calvin's own decade — the Schmalkaldic League (1531) fresh in every reader's ear: princes bind themselves for interest; these nations, with nothing else in common, were bound by the Book alone.
Lineage and afterlife. The argument is patristic before it is Calvin's: Augustine (City of God XXII.5) marveled that the world believed fishermen against all its own wishes — S6's against all human wishes is nearly a citation. Forward: the endurance-and-spread argument became a fixture of classical apologetics (Grotius, Paley), and its abuse — church history as a demonstration compelling faith — is exactly what Calvin's weight-not-foundation distinction forbids. The moderns who remembered the distinction (Bavinck: the testimonium is the principium, external proofs its servants) are Calvin's true heirs here.
7 — Scripture Connections –
- Ps 92:12 —
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree— S2'sflourished like the palm tree. Calvin lifts the psalm's emblem for the righteous man and pins it on the Book — Scripture personified as the righteous sufferer who thrives under oppression. The transfer is the exegesis: what God does for his saints, he does for his Word. - Ps 2:1–4 (with Acts 4:25–26) — S4's
The powers of the earth armed themselves. The kings of the earth set themselves ... against the Lord — and he that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh. The apostles already read Ps 2 as persecution commentary (Acts 4); Calvin extends the same reading to the war on Scripture. - Ps 37:20 (cf. Ps 68:2) — S4's
vanished into smoke. The enemies of the Lord ... into smoke shall they consume away. The arsonists become the smoke — the image executes the reversal. - Isa 40:8 (with 1 Pet 1:24–25) — S2/S6's invincible endurance. The grass withereth ... but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Gk. §12 is this verse argued from the historical record.
- Acts 5:38–39 — the logical engine of S5–S6. Gamaliel: if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it. Calvin runs the test across fifteen centuries and reports the result: not overthrown — therefore not of men.
- Isa 2:2–3 — S7–S8's
holy leagueof the nations. All nations shall flow unto it ... and many people shall go and say, Come ye. The prophesied convergence of peoples upon the word of the LORD, historicized as the worldwide reception of Scripture. - Phil 2:15 (cf. Matt 5:14) — S9's
in whom as lights ... his Church should shine. Gk. φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ (phōstēres en kosmō) — luminaries in the world. Calvin narrows the psalmic "all" to the Pauline "lights": the piety that weighs is the piety God kindled.

①Add, moreover, that the uniform consent of so many ages is ②not without its weight. When assailed on every side, how could Scripture ③have resisted if it ④trusted only to human aid?
반사실 조건절의 시제 — 과거 사실의 반대는 if it **had trusted** (had + p.p.).
(a) Calvin reverses his teaching in I.7 and grounds the authority of Scripture on the approval of the Church. (b) Calvin argues that Scripture's survival of every assault, and its reception by nations having nothing else in common, confirm its divine origin as secondary evidence. (c) Calvin concedes that the consent of the Church carries only slight weight compared with the internal testimony of the Spirit. (d) Calvin attributes the added weight of the argument to the piety of all who have ever professed obedience to Scripture.
(c) litotes 를 양보로 오독 — not without its weight·no small weight 는 절제된 강조다(Examiner's Eye ②). (d) 범위 초과 — not of all of them indeed, but of those in whom as lights ...(S9 꼬리, Examiner's Eye ④).
Formula 1(
Add that), Formula 2(litotes 1회 이상), Formula 3 ①(반사실 수사의문)과 ②(alone could have p.p.)
Add, moreover, that the uniform consent of so many ages is not without its weight. When assailed on every side, how could it have resisted if it had trusted only to human aid? Such endurance a Divine Providence alone could have produced.
Add that the consent has great weight.— 뜻은 맞지만 ⚠️ litotes 조건 미충족. 오늘의 과녁은 절제 화법:is not without its weight.how could it resist if it had trusted ...— ✗ ⚠️ 주절의 modal perfect 탈락. 과거 반사실은could have resisted. 현재형 resist 는 시제가 조건절과 어긋난다.only a Divine Providence could produce it— ✗ ⚠️ 과거의 실현된 결과에 대한 추론은 could have produced. Add that ...(S7).
9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –
One-line summary. 장부가 열리고(Add, moreover, that ... — S1, 회계 화법의 명령문), 첫 기입: 교회의 consent 는 not without its weight(S1 — litotes 제1탄). 증거 A는 시간이다: 모든 세대의 한결같은 순종, 그리고 사탄과 온 세상의 말살 기도(efface it from the memory of men — 디오클레티아누스의 303년 칙령이 문자 그대로 이것이다)에도 flourished like the palm tree and continued invincible(S2 — 가주어 + 쌍둥이 that절, litotes 제2탄, 시 92:12). 펜이 덤볐고(scarcely a sophist ... who did not = 거의 전원이 덤볐다는 이중부정, S3), 칼이 덤볐으나 vanished into smoke(S4 — 시 2편·시 37:20). 그렇다면: how could it have resisted if it had trusted only to human aid?(S5 — ★ 반사실 수사의문, 답은 "못 버텼다") — Nay, 생존을 넘어 전진했다, by its own energy(S6 — 가말리엘의 검증, 행 5:38–39). 둘째 기입(Add that, S7 — 장식을 벗은 장부 화법 + 부정 it-cleft): 한 도시·한 민족이 아니라 as far and as wide as the world extends, 아무 공통점 없는 민족들의 holy league(S8 — 절대구문 + 16세기의 정치 언어). 관석: 그 다양한 정신들의 일치는 a Divine Providence alone could have produced(S9 — ★ alone could have p.p. = 추론), 거기에 no small weight(litotes 제3탄)를 더하는 것은 전원이 아니라 등불들의 경건이다(not of all of them ..., but of those in whom as lights God was pleased that his Church should shine — 빌 2:15).
And the three grammar points, restated:
- 장부 명령문. ★
Add(, moreover,) that + S V— that절 전체가 목적어인 적립 화법; 두 번째부터는Add that으로 옷을 벗는다(S1→S7). ★
not without N/not ... of no N/no small N= 절제된 강조 — 셋 다 "크다"는 뜻이다(S1·S2·S9).
how could S have p.p. ..., if S had p.p.?(S5, 답은 강한 부정) /alone could have p.p.+ 실존하는 결과 = 추론(S9). ⚠️ Day 46 반사실 → Day 47 추론 must → Day 48 의문형·alone형 — 골격은 하나, 값은 프레임이 정한다.
Homework (10 minutes).
(We ought to attach the greatest weight to the agreement of minds so diversified. 수준까지), (b) 대시 사이 동격 섬을 독립시킨 문장(alone could have produced 유지), (c) 주절을 독립시킨 문장(ambient it 을 해소해 Attending to their piety adds no small weight.
Again, with what confidence does it become us to subscribe to a doctrine attested and confirmed by the blood of so many saints? — ★ with what confidence does it become us — 의문 부사구 전치 + 도치 + 비인칭 it becomes us(~하는 것이 우리에게 합당하다): 첫 문장부터 삼중 장치다. 무대는 순교자들: 피로 봉인된 증언(sealed with the blood of so many witnesses), 단 광신이 아니라 sober godly zeal 로.
Where we stopped: Book 1, Ch. 8, §12 끝. Book 1, Ch. 8, §13 (Day 49) — "The constancy of the martyrs. Conclusion. Proofs of this description only of use after the certainty of Scripture has been established in the heart by the Holy Spirit."
