Day 49 — Book 1, Chapter 8, §13
0 — Orientation (1 minute) –
Chapter finale. Thirteen sections of evidence — antiquity, miracles, prophecy, majesty, survival, the worldwide league — and today Calvin enters the last item in the ledger (the martyrs' blood) and then does the thing no evidentialist would ever do: he closes the ledger and hands the whole column back to the Spirit.
Yesterday I left you a question: if §13 is about to say "these proofs cannot produce faith," why did Calvin spend thirteen sections stacking them? Today the text itself answers, in one sentence — S5: the proofs serve two different addressees. To the pious, they prove (confirm what the Spirit already sealed); against the slanderers, they vindicate (shut mouths). Neither operation creates faith. Watch for not only proved to the pious, but also completely vindicated against the cavils of slanderers — the whole architecture of Ch. 8 sits inside that correlative. And then S6–S10 lock the chapter: proofs cannot of themselves produce firm faith; Then only ... does Scripture suffice when the Spirit persuades within; it is foolish to try to argue infidels into the Word of God — This it cannot be known to be, except by faith.
One more thing before we run. The martyr argument comes with a built-in quality control that Rome's objectors loved to poke: heretics die boldly too. Calvin knows. That is why S4 refuses to count raw courage: not with fanatical enthusiasm (as erring spirits are sometimes wont to do), but with a firm and constant, yet sober godly zeal. Sobriety, not spectacle, is the credential. Augustine said it in four words against the Donatists: the cause, not the suffering, makes the martyr. Period 6 has the receipts.
The shape in one breath:
S1–S3 last entry ── the martyrs' blood: confidence (S1),
their alacrity (S2), the earnest handed to us (S3)
S4 the entry weighed ── no small proof — BUT sober zeal, not fanaticism
S5 the ledger totalled ── other reasons, neither few nor feeble:
prove to the pious / vindicate vs slanderers
S6–S7 THE PIVOT ── proofs cannot of themselves produce faith →
Then only does Scripture suffice: Spirit within
S8 proofs re-hired ── not without effect — as secondary helps
S9–S10 the boundary ── foolish to prove to infidels; known only by faith
S11 the seal ── Augustine: piety and mental peace come first
Today's 3 Big Points — write them down now:
- The inversion triple: front the adverbial, and the auxiliary jumps. Three strikes in one section: ★ S1
with what confidence **does it become** us(interrogative adverbial fronted + do-support + impersonal it becomes us = "it befits us"), ★ S7Then only, therefore, **does Scripture suffice**(restrictive adverb fronted → inversion), ★ S11Justly, therefore, **does Augustine remind** us(evaluative adverb fronted → inversion). One law, three costumes: a fronted restrictive/evaluative adverbial drags the auxiliary in front of the subject. ⚠️ The exam underlines thedoesand offers you a flatScripture suffices— killing the inversion the fronting demands. hesitated not boldly ... to meet death— archaic postverbal negation + the adverb-scope trap.hesitated not= did not hesitate (negation after the verb, no do-support — Beveridge's archaic license). But watch the adverbs:boldly and intrepidly, and even with great alacritydo NOT modify the hesitating — they modify the meeting of death: they did not hesitate — boldly, and even eagerly — to meet death. ⚠️ Read "hesitated boldly" and the sentence turns to nonsense. And the litotes battery from Day 48 keeps firing:no small proof(S4),neither few nor feeble(S5),not ... without effect(S8) — all meaning MORE, not less.- The subjunctive and the twisted object — two fossils, exam gold. ★ S6
until our heavenly Father **manifest** his presence ... and thereby **secure** implicit reverence— TWO bare present subjunctives afteruntil(no -s; modern English says manifests). ★ S10**This** it cannot be known to be— a seven-word knot: the object ofto befronted to the head of the clause. Restore: it (= Scripture) cannot be known to be this (= the Word of God), except by faith. ⚠️ Both will appear in Period 8. Neither is an error. Both look like errors. That is why they are on the exam.
Eleven sentences. S1, S2, S4, S7 and S10 take the heavy time. Chapter 8 ends today. Let's go.
1 — Full Text (the whole § — 11 sentences, verbatim) –
13. Again, with what confidence does it become us to subscribe to a doctrine attested and confirmed by the blood of so many saints? They, when once they had embraced it, hesitated not boldly and intrepidly, and even with great alacrity, to meet death in its defence. Being transmitted to us with such an earnest, who of us shall not receive it with firm and unshaken conviction? It is therefore no small proof of the authority of Scripture, that it was sealed with the blood of so many witnesses, especially when it is considered that in bearing testimony to the faith, they met death not with fanatical enthusiasm (as erring spirits are sometimes wont to do), but with a firm and constant, yet sober godly zeal. There are other reasons, neither few nor feeble, by which the dignity and majesty of the Scriptures may be not only proved to the pious, but also completely vindicated against the cavils of slanderers. These, however, cannot of themselves produce a firm faith in Scripture until our heavenly Father manifest his presence in it, and thereby secure implicit reverence for it. Then only, therefore, does Scripture suffice to give a saving knowledge of God when its certainty is founded on the inward persuasion of the Holy Spirit. Still the human testimonies which go to confirm it will not be without effect, if they are used in subordination to that chief and highest proof, as secondary helps to our weakness. But it is foolish to attempt to prove to infidels that the Scripture is the Word of God. This it cannot be known to be, except by faith. Justly, therefore, does Augustine remind us, that every man who would have any understanding in such high matters must previously possess piety and mental peace. ✅ Text note. Our source file source/Institutes_Beveridge_FULL.txt carries §13 at lines 3798–3817. Page furniture removed as noise, per the standing rule: the page number 83 (end of line 3809) with its following blank line — ⚠️ note where the page break lands: inside S7, between Then only, and therefore, does Scripture suffice — the page turns exactly between the fronted adverb and the inversion it triggers, splitting the thesis sentence of the entire chapter at its hinge. Fourth day running that the furniture falls mid-sentence; keep trusting the syntax, not the page. One line-break hyphenation repaired: un- / derstanding (lines 3816–3817) → understanding — plain repair, no genuine compound today. The parenthesis in S4 ((as erring spirits are sometimes wont to do)) is the source's own — it carries structure (a concessive aside inside the not-X-but-Y contrast), so respect it. No em-dashes today. One paragraph only — no Beveridge break; the chapter walks to its conclusion in a single unbroken column. ⚠️ Now run the standing Day 42 checks. Every stranded comparative, every so/too/such without a partner, every pronoun without an antecedent. Correlatives: **not only** proved to the pious, **but also** completely vindicated against the cavils of slanderers (S5) ✓ — clean pair, both conjuncts passive participles sharing may be. **not** with fanatical enthusiasm ... **but** with a firm and constant, yet sober godly zeal (S4) ✓ — not-X-but-Y with matched with-phrases. **neither** few **nor** feeble (S5) ✓ — closed pair. so many saints (S1), so many witnesses (S4) — ⚠️ no that-partner, and none needed: plain quantity, Day 48's verdict again. such an earnest (S3), such high matters (S11) — same: such as plain intensifier, no result clause. Flag, resolve, move on. Pronouns: They (S2) = the saints of S1 — the blood-shedders step forward as subject. it (S2, twice) = the doctrine (embraced it / in its defence). Being transmitted (S3) — ⚠️ the participle hangs from it (the doctrine), NOT from who of us: the doctrine, being transmitted to us with such an earnest — who of us shall not receive it? Modern style calls this a dangling participle; Beveridge's Latinate habit lets the logical subject sit in the main clause as it. Restore before you parse. it was sealed (S4) = Scripture. These (S6) = the other reasons of S5 (with the whole chapter's proofs standing behind them). it (S6, twice) = Scripture. it (S8) = Scripture; they (S8) = the human testimonies. This (S10) — ⚠️ flagged: = the Word of God (the predicate of S9), fronted; it (S10) = the Scripture. Sort these two or S10 dissolves. us (S1, S11) = we the heirs of the martyrs. Trap words on patrol: become (S1) = befit, be fitting for (it becomes us = it is proper for us) — nobody is turning into anything. subscribe (S1) = give assent, sign one's name under (sub + scribere) — no magazines. earnest (S3) = pledge, down payment (noun!) — not "serious." enthusiasm (S4) = claimed private inspiration, god-possession (Gk. entheos) — a 16th–17th c. technical slur, not "excitement." wont (S4) = accustomed — not "want," not "won't." cavils (S5) = frivolous quibbles (cavillari, to jeer). implicit (S6) = absolute, unquestioning (of reverence/faith) — not "implied." suffice to give (S7) = be sufficient — watch it govern the infinitive. infidels (S9) = unbelievers (in + fides) — period term, no modern edge. would have (S11) = wishes to have (volitional would) — not future-in-past. All ten in Period 5. ℹ️ On the count. Eleven sentences, one paragraph. Two questions (S1, S3), both rhetorical; the shortest sentence of the chapter (S10 — seven words, and the most twisted); and the giant is S4 (the weighed entry with its parenthetical aside). The semicolon count is zero. The count stands at 11.
2 — Structure at a Glance (board work) –
The last ledger entry, the total, and the handover — a courtroom closing in three moves:
S1–S3 ENTRY (last) ── the martyrs: with what confidence ought we
to subscribe? (S1) — they ran to death (S2)
— the earnest is in our hands (S3)
S4 WEIGHED ── no small proof — QUALITY CONTROL:
sober godly zeal, NOT fanatical enthusiasm
S5 TOTAL ── other reasons, neither few nor feeble:
① prove to the pious ② vindicate vs slanderers
S6 LIMIT ── cannot OF THEMSELVES produce firm faith
(until the Father manifest his presence)
S7 THESIS ── Then only does Scripture suffice:
certainty = inward persuasion of the Spirit
S8 RE-HIRE ── testimonies not without effect IF subordinate
— "secondary helps to our weakness"
S9–S10 BOUNDARY ── foolish to prove to infidels;
known to be the Word only by faith
S11 SEAL ── Augustine: piety and mental peace first
Examiner's Eye —
⚠️ 선지 양쪽에서 온다: "Calvin dismisses rational proofs as entirely useless" ✗ — S8 이 명시적으로 부정한다: will not be without effect(litotes = 실효가 있다), 단 in subordination to that chief and highest proof 일 때. "Calvin grounds the certainty of Scripture on the constancy of the martyrs" ✗ — S6–S7 이 명시적으로 부정한다: 증거는 cannot of themselves produce a firm faith, 확실성의 기초는 the inward persuasion of the Holy Spirit 뿐이다. 열쇠 구절은 of themselves(그 자체로는)와 secondary helps to our weakness — Day 48 의 weight ≠ foundation 이 오늘 명문화됐다.
⚠️ "Calvin argues that dying boldly for a doctrine proves it true" ✗ — S4 가 정확히 이것을 차단한다: not with fanatical enthusiasm (as erring spirits are sometimes wont to do), but with a firm and constant, yet sober godly zeal.
⚠️ "The proofs are designed to convert the slanderers of Scripture" ✗ — 동사를 보라: 경건한 자에게는 proved(확증), 비방자에게는 vindicated against(논박·입막음). S9 가 명시한다: foolish to attempt to prove to infidels.
⚠️ "This cannot be known, except by faith" 로 눙치는 선지 — 절반만 맞다. This it cannot be known **to be**: 성경이(it) 이것(This = 하나님의 말씀)이라는 것은 믿음으로만 알려진다.

- neither few nor feeble = many and strong (litotes); not only X but also Y = paired assertion; the cavils of slanderers = the quibbles of professional detractors.
Modern English
There are other reasons too — many of them, and strong — by which the dignity and majesty of the Scriptures can not only be proved to the godly but also fully defended against the sneers of its detractors.

One point and we move: extraposition again (it is foolish to attempt ...), and the bluntest sentence of the chapter — the boundary of apologetics drawn in one stroke. infidels = unbelievers (in + fides), a period term of classification, not abuse. Note what is called foolish: not speaking to unbelievers, not vindicating Scripture against their cavils (S5 just endorsed that) — but attempting to prove to them the one thing (that the Scripture is the Word of God) which S10 will say is knowable only by faith. Wrong instrument for the object; that is the foolishness.
"This it cannot be known to be, except by faith."

- faith < Lat. fides → infidel (S9), fidelity, confide — S9 and S10 share one root across the boundary line.
- be known to be X = be recognized as being X (raising passive); except by X = save through X alone.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –
The doctrine at stake: the adminicula clause — proofs given a job description, not a pink slip. §13 is where Chapter 8 signs its own charter. Every proof since §1 — arrangement, majesty, antiquity, miracles, prophecy, preservation, apostles, church history, martyrs — is herewith classified: secondary helps to our weakness, effective ONLY in subordination to that chief and highest proof, the Spirit's inward persuasion (I.7.4–5). Mark the balance, because both ditches are full of exam wrecks. Ditch one: Calvin the evidentialist — no; proofs cannot of themselves produce a firm faith, and it is foolish to argue infidels into the Word. Ditch two: Calvin the fideist who scorns evidence — also no; the testimonies are not without effect, the reasons neither few nor feeble, and Calvin himself just spent thirteen sections marshalling them. The right frame: faith is founded by the Spirit; proofs confirm the founded and silence the scoffer. Two addressees (S5), zero conversions by syllogism. ⚠️ Over-reading guardrail: S11's "piety before understanding" is not anti-intellectualism — it is an ordering: the instrument (a pacified, reverent mind) must be in tune before the music can be played. Calvin wrote a 1,000-page argument; he did not burn the library.
The history behind the sentences. The martyr argument was not antiquarian for Calvin — it was the morning news. The 1536 Institutes opened with a preface to Francis I of France defending evangelicals then being burned (the Affair of the Placards, 1534, had lit the fires); by the 1559 edition, the Chambre Ardente had done its work and Calvin had written letters of consolation to the condemned — most famously the five students of Lausanne, burned at Lyon in 1553, letters that read like S2 in epistolary form: no hesitation, great alacrity. And the quality-control clause has an address too: fanatical enthusiasm (as erring spirits ...) glances at the Anabaptist catastrophe of Münster (1534–35) — wild-eyed prophecy, polygamous kingdom, apocalyptic bloodbath — Rome's favorite exhibit for "your martyrs prove nothing; fanatics die boldly too." Calvin's answer is Augustine's anti-Donatist rule: martyrem non facit poena, sed causa (Ep. 89; Enarr. in Ps. 34) — not the penalty but the cause makes the martyr — upgraded with a manner-test: sober, constant, godly zeal is the signature of a true cause. Tertullian stands further back (Apology 50: semen est sanguis Christianorum — the blood of Christians is seed), and S3's earnest quietly moves the martyrs' blood from seed to down payment.
Lineage and afterlife. S11's Augustine is the De utilitate credendi — written for Honoratus, the friend still trapped in the Manichee promise of proof before faith: Augustine's whole case is that in the highest matters, believing rightly precedes understanding (credo ut intelligam, as Anselm would later cast it), and that a mind without piety and peace cannot even see the evidence straight. Calvin makes that psychology the closing seal of his evidence chapter — a deliberate irony: the longest evidential chapter in the Institutes ends by subordinating evidence to disposition. Forward: Reformed orthodoxy systematized the distinction (Bavinck: the testimonium is the principium, external proofs its servants); and the twentieth century's Reformed epistemology (Plantinga's properly basic belief, warranted without evidentialist argument) is I.8.13 in analytic dress — Plantinga cites Calvin by name for exactly this move. The through-line: evidence has a place; it has never had the throne.
7 — Scripture Connections –
- Eph 1:13–14 (with 2 Cor 1:22; 5:5) — S3's
earnest. Gk. ἀρραβών (arrabōn) — the commercial pledge, the down payment guaranteeing the balance: the earnest of our inheritance. Paul's word for the Spirit; Calvin borrows the economics for the martyrs' blood — a doctrine delivered with collateral attached. The loanword is Semitic (Heb. עֵרָבוֹן, Gen 38:17–18 — Judah's pledge to Tamar): trade-language for trust. - Rev 12:11 — S2's whole martyrology in one verse. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Note the KJV's own postverbal negation (
loved not) — S2's grammar and S2's content in a single breath. - Acts 22:20 (with Rev 2:13; 17:6) — S4's
witnesses= μάρτυρες. The blood of thy martyr Stephen — Gk. μάρτυς, witness. The NT is where the word begins its migration from courtroom to stake; Calvin's argument rides the etymology: sealedwith the blood of so many witnessesis literally martyred testimony. - Heb 12:1 — the transmitted earnest received. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses (μαρτύρων) ... let us run. S3's relay logic — their testimony finished, our reception owed — is this verse's exhortation in doctrinal form.
- 1 Cor 2:4–5 — the engine of S6–S7. My preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Gk. ἀπόδειξις πνεύματος — the Spirit's own demonstration, the
chief and highest proof(S8) named eight sections before Calvin names it. - Matt 16:17 — S6's
our heavenly Father manifest his presence. Flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. The Father as the discloser of what argument cannot deliver — Calvin's until-clause is this verse generalized to Scripture. - 1 Cor 12:3 (with John 6:44–45) — the boundary of S9–S10. No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Identity-knowledge (
known to be) as Spirit-gift, not inference-product: exactly the epistemology ofThis it cannot be known to be, except by faith.
8 — Exam Problems –
With what confidence ①does it become us to subscribe to this doctrine! The saints ②hesitated not to meet death in its defence; yet their testimony cannot of itself produce faith until our heavenly Father ③manifests his presence in Scripture. This ④it cannot be known to be, except by faith.
✨ 답안 보기 (클릭)정답: ③. until 뒤의 미실현 사건은 이 문체에서 현재 가정법 동사원형: until our heavenly Father **manifest** his presence (Formula 3 ①).
(a) Calvin holds that the constancy of the martyrs supplies the foundation on which the certainty of Scripture finally rests. (b) Calvin dismisses the rational proofs of Scripture as entirely without effect for believer and unbeliever alike. (c) Calvin argues that the martyrs' sober constancy is no small proof, yet all such proofs serve only as secondary helps, unable of themselves to produce the firm faith which the Spirit's inward persuasion alone founds. (d) Calvin maintains that any man who dies boldly for his convictions thereby bears trustworthy witness to the truth of his doctrine.
✨ 답안 보기 (클릭)정답: (c). no small proof(S4) + secondary helps(S8) + cannot of themselves(S6) + inward persuasion(S7) — 네 열쇠 구절의 정확한 종합. (b) litotes 뒤집기 — will not be without effect(S8)는 실효의 확언이다(Examiner's Eye ①). (S4, Examiner's Eye ②).
Then only ... when상관구조를 사용할 것.)
Then only does the testimony of the Church stand unshaken, when its conviction is founded on the inward persuasion of the Spirit. That testimony will not be without effect; and the martyrs hesitated not, even with great joy, to seal the truth with their blood.
Then only the testimony stands unshaken— ✗ ⚠️ 도치 탈락. 제한 부사어Then only가 문두에 오면 조동사가 뛴다:does the testimony stand. Formula 1 의 핵심 채점점.will have some effect— 뜻은 통하지만 ⚠️ litotes 조건 미충족. 오늘의 과녁은 절제 화법:will not be without effect— 낮은 목소리, 강한 뜻.did not hesitate boldly to seal— ✗ ⚠️ 스코프 오염 + 고형 부정 미사용. 조건은hesitated not; 부사는 부정 직후가 아니라 to-inf 쪽에 붙는 방식으로 배치하라(hesitated not, even with great joy, to seal).when its conviction founded on ...— ✗ ⚠️ 수동태 be 탈락.is founded on— S7 의founded는 과거분사이고 be 가 필요하다.
9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –
One-line summary. 마지막 기입: with what confidence does it become us to subscribe(S1 — ★ 전치 + 도치 + 비인칭 it becomes us, 공증의 언어: 순교자들이 피로 attest 한 문서에 우리가 서명한다), 그들은 hesitated not ... even with great alacrity, to meet death(S2 — ★ 후치 부정 + 부사 스코프: 담대한 것은 주저가 아니라 죽음맞이다), 그 피는 우리 손의 earnest(S3 — 엡 1:14 ἀρραβών, 계약금)다. 기입의 무게: no small proof(S4 — litotes 제4탄), 단 품질 조건이 붙는다 — not with fanatical enthusiasm ..., but with a firm and constant, yet sober godly zeal(뮌스터가 아니라 리옹; 아우구스티누스의 반(反)도나투스 규칙: 고난이 아니라 대의가 순교자를 만든다). 총계: neither few nor feeble(S5 — litotes 제5탄), 수신인은 둘 — proved to the pious / vindicated against the cavils of slanderers(어제 숙제의 정답: 확증과 입막음, 회심은 없다). 그리고 반납: cannot **of themselves** produce a firm faith until our heavenly Father **manifest** his presence(S6 — ★ 이중 가정법 원형), **Then only** ... **does Scripture suffice** ... founded on the inward persuasion of the Holy Spirit(S7 — ★ 장 전체의 논제 문장, 전치 + 도치, 기초는 오직 하나), 증언들은 not without effect(S8 — litotes 제6탄) — 단 in subordination to that chief and highest proof, as secondary helps to our weakness(장의 자기 명명). 경계선: foolish to attempt to prove to infidels(S9), **This** it cannot be known to be, except by faith(S10 — ★ 술어보어 전치: 성경이 하나님의 말씀'임'은 믿음으로만), 인장: Justly ... does Augustine remind us(S11 — 경건과 마음의 평화가 이해에 선행한다, De utilitate credendi).
And the three grammar points, restated:
- 도치 3연발. ★ 제한·평가 부사어 전치 →
does + S + V도치:with what confidence does it become us(S1) /Then only ... does Scripture suffice(S7) /Justly ... does Augustine remind us(S11).
until + 원형(manifest ... and secure)(S6 — 등위 동사까지 원형, 우연 아닌 규칙) /This it cannot be known to be(S10 — it=성경, This=하나님의 말씀, to be 를 살려야 술어가 산다).
Homework (10 minutes).
(That Scripture was sealed with the blood of so many witnesses is a great proof of its authority. 수준까지 — litotes 를 직설로 풀 것), (b) especially when it is considered that 이하를 독립시킨 문장(가주어 it 해소), (c) not-X-but-Y 대조를 두 문장으로 분리(광신 배제 1문장 + sober zeal 확언 1문장).
Those who, rejecting Scripture, imagine that they have some peculiar way of penetrating to God, are to be deemed not so much under the influence of error as madness. — ★ not so much X as Y(X 라기보다 Y) 비교 상관구조 + 삽입 분사구문(rejecting Scripture) + are to be deemed(당위의 be to): 첫 문장부터 진단이 내려진다 — 오류가 아니라 광기.
Where we stopped: Book 1, Ch. 8, §13 끝 — Chapter 8 완료. Book 1, Ch. 9, §1 (Day 50) — "All the principles of piety subverted by fanatics, who substitute revelations for Scripture. The temper and error of the Libertines, who take to themselves the name of spiritual, briefly described. Their refutation."
