Day 52 — Book 1, Chapter 9, §3
0 — Orientation (1 minute) –
Chapter's last day — and Calvin saved the fanatics' best weapon for it. Since Day 50 they have been sneering at the dead and deadly letter, and the sneer has a proof-text: 2 Corinthians 3:6 — "the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life." Paul himself, apparently, on their side. If Calvin cannot take this verse away from them, the whole chapter unravels. Watch how he opens (S1): their cavil — their frivolous objection — carries with it the punishment which they deserve for despising Scripture. Translation: the verse they brandish is the verse that convicts them. Then the exegesis (S2–S5): Paul's target was false apostles recommending the law without Christ — so "letter" never meant the written Word as such; it meant the Word dissevered from the grace of Christ (S3). Same text, two conditions: severed → dead; impressed by the Spirit, exhibiting Christ → the word of life converting the soul (S4). The fanatics quoted the diagnosis and skipped the cure.
Then the section — and the chapter — rises to its thesis. S6 turns back to face chapter 7's claim (no certainty of the word until it be confirmed by the testimony of the Spirit) and denies any contradiction. Why? S7, the summit of the whole chapter: the Lord has so knit together the certainty of his word and his Spirit, that — reverence for the word comes when the Spirit shines on it, AND we embrace the Spirit with no danger of delusion when we recognise him in his image, that is, in his word. Yesterday's stamped image (Day 51 S7), now explicitly glossed: the image IS the word. Two-way attestation, one sentence. Then the proofs march: God did not publish a word merely to abolish it at the Spirit's arrival (S9); Emmaus — Christ made the disciples understand the Scriptures, not discard them (S10); and Paul's twin imperatives, “Quench not the Spirit,” immediately chained to “Despise not prophesying,” (S11) — despise the Word and you have put the Spirit's light out yourself (S12). The closer aims at the swelling enthusiasts (S13) and hands the children of God their sobriety (S14–S16): the word is the instrument by which the illumination of the Spirit is dispensed, and there is no other Spirit than the one who dwelt and spake in the apostles.
The shape in one breath:
S1 VERDICT ── the "dead letter" cavil punishes its users
S2 EXEGESIS ── Paul's real target: false apostles —
the law WITHOUT Christ
S3–S4 THE HINGE ── letter dead WHEN dissevered from Christ's grace /
word of LIFE when Spirit impresses it on the heart
S5 BOND (1) ── Spirit cleaves to his own truth → strength put
forth only where the word is honoured
S6–S7 HARMONY ── no clash with ch. 7: word & Spirit KNIT TOGETHER
— two-way recognition, no delusion
S8 PIVOT ── "Thus, indeed, it is."
S9–S12 PROOFS ── same-Spirit economy / Emmaus: understand, not
reject / Quench not + Despise not
S13 ATTACK ── swelling enthusiasts: adieu to the Word,
dreaming notions
S14–S16 SOBRIETY ── light of the Spirit dispensed THROUGH the word;
no other Spirit than the apostles'

Bonus measures: S13with no less confidence than folly= as much folly as confidence (the double-negative comparative, Day 7's family), and S14's trap verbbecomes= befits.
Sixteen sentences — the longest section of the chapter — but two are one-liners and the star-map keeps the weight where it belongs: S4, S5, S7, S9, S13. Let's go.
1 — Full Text (the whole § — 16 sentences, verbatim) –
3. Their cavil about our cleaving to the dead letter carries with it the punishment which they deserve for despising Scripture. It is clear that Paul is there arguing against false apostles (2 Cor. 3:6), who, by recommending the law without Christ, deprived the people of the benefit of the New Covenant, by which the Lord engages that he will write his law on the hearts of believers, and engrave it on their inward parts. The letter therefore is dead, and the law of the Lord kills its readers when it is dissevered from the grace of Christ, and only sounds in the ear without touching the heart. But if it is effectually impressed on the heart by the Spirit; if it exhibits Christ, it is the word of life converting the soul, and making wise the simple. Nay, in the very same passage, the apostle calls his own preaching the ministration of the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:8), intimating that the Holy Spirit so cleaves to his own truth, as he has expressed it in Scripture, that he then only exerts and puts forth his strength when the word is received with due honour and respect. There is nothing repugnant here to what was lately said (chap. 7) that we have no great certainty of the word itself, until it be confirmed by the testimony of the Spirit. For the Lord has so knit together the certainty of his word and his Spirit, that our minds are duly imbued with reverence for the word when the Spirit shining upon it enables us there to behold the face of God; and, on the other hand, we embrace the Spirit with no danger of delusion when we recognise him in his image, that is, in his word. Thus, indeed, it is. God did not produce his word before men for the sake of sudden display, intending to abolish it the moment the Spirit should arrive; but he employed the same Spirit, by whose agency he had administered the word, to complete his work by the efficacious confirmation of the word. In this way Christ explained to the two disciples (Luke 24:27), not that they were to reject the Scriptures and trust to their own wisdom, but that they were to understand the Scriptures. In like manner, when Paul says to the Thessalonians, “Quench not the Spirit,” he does not carry them aloft to empty speculation apart from the word; he immediately adds, “Despise not prophesying,” (1 Thess. 5:19, 20). By this, doubtless, he intimates that the light of the Spirit is quenched the moment prophesying fall into contempt. How is this answered by those swelling enthusiasts, in whose idea the only true illumination consists, in carelessly laying aside, and bidding adieu to the Word of God, while, with no less confidence than folly, they fasten upon any dreaming notion which may have casually sprung up in their minds? Surely a very different sobriety becomes the children of God. As they feel that without the Spirit of God they are utterly devoid of the light of truth, so they are not ignorant that the word is the instrument by which the illumination of the Spirit is dispensed. They know of no other Spirit than the one who dwelt and spake in the apostles—the Spirit by whose oracles they are daily invited to the hearing of the word. ✅ Text note. Our source file source/Institutes_Beveridge_FULL.txt carries §3 at lines 3908–3951, and this time the page furniture lands mid-sentence: a footnote marker 86 falls immediately after false apostles in S2, followed by a page break (page number 90 + the running chapter header) inside S2's span, before (2 Cor. 3:6) — all stripped above. One hyphenation repair across the same break: be-nefit → benefit. The section runs as two paragraphs in the source (S1–S5, S6–S16) — kept above. Typographic flags: the curly quotes in “Quench not the Spirit,” and “Despise not prophesying,” are the source's own, including the odd sequence ,” (1 Thess. 5:19, 20) — comma inside the closing quote, citation after; the em-dash in S16 (in the apostles—the Spirit) is the source's own, set solid without spaces. And one deliberate oddity preserved verbatim: S13's comma after consists (... the only true illumination consists, in carelessly laying aside ...) — Beveridge's punctuation, not our typo; see S13's teaching. The section summary in the chapter head reads: "Second Objection from the words of Paul as to the letter and spirit. The Answer, with an explanation of Paul's meaning. How the Spirit and the written Word are indissolubly connected." ⚠️ Now run the standing Day 42 checks. Every stranded comparative, every so/too/such without a partner, every pronoun without an antecedent. Correlatives: **so** cleaves ... **that** he then only exerts (S5) ✓ — result pair, closed across the intervening as-clause (the as is NOT the partner — Big Point 1). **so** knit together ... **that** our minds ... (S7) ✓ — the frame again, two result-arms inside. **not that** they were to reject ... **but that** they were to understand (S10) ✓ — twin-clause correction, both halves present. **no less** confidence **than** folly (S13) ✓ — comparative pair closed. **As** they feel ... **so** they are not ignorant (S15) ✓ — correlative as ... so (Day 10's family). **no other** Spirit **than** the one (S16) ✓ — exceptive pair closed. No orphans today. Pronouns: S1 Their cavil = the fanatics'; our cleaving = ours (Calvin owns the accusation before refuting it). S2 there = in that passage (2 Cor. 3) — locative of the text, exactly like Day 51 S9's there = in the Scriptures; he will write **his** law = the Lord. S3 **its** readers = the law's. S4 it (×3) = the letter/the law — and by the third it the referent has become the word of life; the pronoun holds still while the thing transforms. S5 **his** own truth ... as **he** has expressed it = the Holy Spirit (the Spirit expressed his truth in Scripture — authorship claim, quiet but total); **his** strength = the Spirit's. S6 **it** be confirmed = the word. S7 — the two-way sentence: the Spirit shining upon **it** — it = the word; enables us **there** to behold — there = in the word; we recognise **him** in **his** image, that is, in **his** word — him/his = the Spirit, and his word seals the authorship: the word is the Spirit's own. S9 **his** word ... **he** employed ... **his** work = God; by **whose** agency **he** had administered — whose = the Spirit's, he = God: keep the two straight or the sentence dissolves. S10 **they** were to (×2) = the two disciples. S11 **he** does not carry **them** aloft — he = Paul, them = the Thessalonians. S12 **he** intimates = Paul. S13 **their** minds = the enthusiasts'. S14 — no pronouns, one trap verb. S15 **they** feel ... **they** are not ignorant = the children of God. S16 **They** know ... **they** are daily invited = the children of God; the one who dwelt and spake **in the apostles** = the Spirit. Trap words on patrol: cavil (S1) = frivolous objection (cavilla, jeering) — not just any complaint. cleaving / cleaves (S1/S5) — ⚠️ the double-faced verb: here cleave to = stick fast to (OE clifian); the other cleave (= split, OE clēofan) is a different verb wearing the same clothes. Both appearances today are the sticking one — and the repetition is Calvin's jab: they mock us for cleaving to the letter; the Spirit himself cleaves to his own truth. engages (S2) = pledges, covenants — not "hires" or "occupies." dissevered (S3) = cut apart (dis + severare). effectually (S4) = effectively, with real effect — not "actually." ministration (S5) = ministry, service (2 Cor. 3:8's διακονία). intimating (S5/S12: intimates) = indicating, signifying — not "hinting coyly." repugnant (S6) = contradictory, inconsistent (re + pugnare, fight against) — NOT "disgusting"; nothing repugnant here to X = no conflict with X. lately (S6) = recently. imbued (S7) = steeped, saturated (imbuere, to wet). delusion (S7) = deception. sudden display (S9) = momentary show — a flash exhibition, produced then dropped. aloft (S11) = up high — carried up and away. doubtless (S12) = certainly. swelling (S13) = puffed up (Jude 16's ὑπέρογκα behind it). enthusiasts (S13) = ⚠️ the 16th-century technical term: en + theos — claimers of god-within, direct-inspiration men; not "hobbyists." bidding adieu to (S13) = saying farewell to (adieu = à Dieu — commending to God what you are abandoning; the irony is built into the etymology). fasten upon (S13) = seize on. casually (S13) = ⚠️ by chance (casus, fall/accident) — not "in a relaxed manner." sobriety (S14) = sober-mindedness (1 Thess. 5:6–8 is three verses above Calvin's quotation — same chapter, same sobriety). becomes (S14) = ⚠️ befits, suits — X becomes Y = X is fitting for Y; not "turns into." devoid of (S15) = empty of. dispensed (S15) = administered, distributed (dis + pendere, weigh out). oracles (S16) = divine utterances (Rom. 3:2's λόγια). spake (S16) = archaic spoke. All in Period 5. ℹ️ On the count. Sixteen sentences, two paragraphs (S1–S5, S6–S16). One question mark (S13) — a genuine challenge-question hurled at the enthusiasts. Semicolons at the internal pivots of S4, S7, S9, S11; the S4 semicolon (by the Spirit; if it exhibits Christ) stacks two if-clauses — see S4's teaching. S8 is three words long — the shortest sentence in the chapter — and it is counted. The count stands at 16.

God did not bring out his word before men for the sake of a momentary display, intending to abolish it the moment the Spirit arrived; rather, he employed the same Spirit, through whose agency he had administered the word, to complete his work by effectively confirming the word.

6 — Background in 5 Minutes –
The letter/spirit battle has a long genealogy — and Calvin picks a side with eyes open. "The letter killeth" (2 Cor. 3:6) has been the most-hijacked clause in Paul since the second century. Origen made it a hermeneutical program: "letter" = the literal sense, "spirit" = the allegorical — license to float free of the text's plain meaning. Augustine's De spiritu et littera (412) broke that reading: "letter" is the law as command without grace — demanding, never enabling; "spirit" is the Spirit writing the law on hearts. Calvin stands squarely in Augustine's line and sharpens it christologically: the letter is the Word dissevered from the grace of Christ (S3), the spirit is the same Word exhibiting Christ by the Spirit's impress (S4). Same Bible, two relations — never two Bibles. Against the Libertines (Quintin, Pocquet — the giddy men of §1) the stakes were not academic: their "spirit" had dissolved Scripture, sacraments, and eventually moral law.
The knit — Calvin's signature move in the Word-Spirit debate. S7 is among the most-cited sentences in the Institutes: Word and Spirit knit together in mutual attestation. Notice what the metaphor forbids in both directions. Against the enthusiasts: no Spirit-without-Word (the fanatic's balloon is cut down). Against a dead orthodoxy: no Word-without-Spirit (the letter alone kills — Calvin says it as bluntly as the fanatics, S3). The Reformed tradition institutionalized the knot: Westminster Confession 1.5 (persuasion by the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts) — that phrase by and with the Word is S7 in confessional dress. The scholastics coined the vocabulary: Word as principium cognoscendi externum, Spirit as principium internum — two principles, one knowledge. Later reception runs from the Puritan "means of grace" piety (S15's instrument doing three centuries of work) to Barth's protest against both biblicism and mysticism — though Barth re-ties the knot his own way, making Scripture become the Word in the event of the Spirit's speaking, which Calvin would resist: for Calvin the stamp is on the page (Day 51 S7) even when eyes are closed.
The circle, answered. S6 names the objection every reader eventually raises: chapter 7 grounds the word in the Spirit's testimony; chapter 9 grounds Spirit-discernment in the word. Vicious circle? Calvin's answer is not to break the circle but to name its weaver: the Lord has so knit together ... — the mutuality is God's own arrangement (Isa. 59:21, the covenant of §1: my Spirit and my words, never parting). A circle is vicious when we draw it to prop up a conclusion; this one is drawn by the subject himself: God attesting God by God. Every ultimate authority authenticates this way — the alternative is an authority above God to certify him, which is the real absurdity (Heb. 6:13: he swore by himself, because he could swear by no greater).
⚠️ The over-reading guardrail — two fences today. First: S5's he then only exerts ... his strength when the word is received with due honour is the Spirit's ordained economy, not a metaphysical cage — do not flatten it into "the Spirit cannot act apart from the Bible" (Calvin affirms extraordinary workings — creation, providence, common grace — Book 2 will insist the Spirit gives even pagans their arts and sciences). The claim is about the economy of saving illumination: where the Spirit teaches savingly, he teaches by his book. Second: do not turn S15's instrument into automation — the word does not contain illumination like a battery (that would be the letter-alone error with the polarity flipped); the Spirit dispenses through it, freely. The believer's practice follows the economy: S16 — go daily where the oracles are read and preached, and expect the light there. Not because the pages glow, but because the author keeps his appointments.
7 — Scripture Connections –
- 2 Corinthians 3:6 — S1–S4 (cited; the contested text). τὸ γὰρ γράμμα ἀποκτέννει, τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ζῳοποιεῖ — the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. HOW Calvin uses it: by reinstalling its context — Paul fights
false apostlesselling νόμος minus Christ; γράμμα = the law dissevered from grace, not the written word as such. The fanatics' favorite verse becomes Calvin's exhibit: quoted against Scripture, it convicts the quoter (S1). - Jeremiah 31:33 (cf. Heb. 8:10) — S2 (near-quotation). נָתַתִּי אֶת־תּוֹרָתִי בְּקִרְבָּם וְעַל־לִבָּם אֶכְתְּבֶנָּה — I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts. HOW Calvin uses it: as the New Covenant's own definition — the cure for the killing letter is not no letter but letter engraved within.
hearts ... inward partstracks the Hebrew pair לֵב / קֶרֶב. - Psalm 19:7 — S4 (verbatim echo). תּוֹרַת יְהוָה תְּמִימָה מְשִׁיבַת נָפֶשׁ ... מַחְכִּימַת פֶּתִי — the law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul ... making wise the simple. HOW Calvin uses it: David's praise OF THE LAW supplies the predicate for the Spirit-impressed letter — the same corpus the fanatics call deadly is
the word of lifewhen it exhibits Christ. - 2 Corinthians 3:8 — S5 (cited). ἡ διακονία τοῦ πνεύματος — the ministration of the spirit. HOW Calvin uses it: the coup de grâce from the fanatics' own chapter — Paul's preached words are the Spirit's own ministry; therefore Spirit-work is word-shaped in the very passage that "kills the letter."
- Isaiah 59:21 — S7 (structural ground; cited in §1). My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart ... HOW Calvin uses it: the covenant clause behind
knit together— the marriage certificate of Word and Spirit; §3's thesis sentence is this verse stated as epistemology. - 2 Corinthians 3:18 — S7 (echo). τὴν δόξαν κυρίου κατοπτριζόμενοι — beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord. HOW Calvin uses it:
enables us there to behold the face of God— unveiled beholding located in the word; the mirror is the page when the Spirit shines on it. - Luke 24:27, 32 — S10 (cited). ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως ... διερμήνευσεν αὐτοῖς ἐν πάσαις ταῖς γραφαῖς — beginning at Moses ... he expounded unto them in all the scriptures. HOW Calvin uses it: the risen Christ's own hermeneutics lesson — fulfillment arrives and opens the Scriptures rather than closing them; the burning heart (v. 32) comes while the text is opened, S4 narrated.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:19–20 — S11–S12 (quoted). τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε, προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε — Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. HOW Calvin uses it: the adverb
immediatelyis the argument — vv. 19 and 20 are one seam; despising the preached word (v. 20) is how one quenches the Spirit (v. 19). The enthusiasts quote the first and perform the second. - Romans 3:2 — S16 (echo). τὰ λόγια τοῦ θεοῦ — the oracles of God. HOW Calvin uses it: Scripture as the Spirit's own λόγια —
by whose oracles they are daily invited— the Spirit's speech-record identifying the Spirit's person (with Rom. 8:9's indwelling and the apostolicdwelt and spakecompleting the ID).

(c) Calvin argues that "the letter killeth" only when the word is dissevered from the grace of Christ; the same word, impressed by the Spirit and exhibiting Christ, is the word of life — for the Spirit is recognised in his own image, that is, in his word. 9 — One-Line Wrap-up + Homework –
One-line summary: §3 wrests 2 Cor. 3:6 from the fanatics — "the letter killeth" indicts the law dissevered from Christ, not the written word, which the Spirit-impressed heart receives as the word of life (S3–S4) — and then ties the chapter's knot: the Lord has so knit together word and Spirit that the Spirit makes the word revered and the word identifies the Spirit in his image, that is, in his word (S7), proven by the same-Spirit economy (S9), Emmaus (S10), and Paul's chained imperatives (S11–S12), so that the children of God, in sober contrast to the swelling enthusiasts, take the word as the instrument of the Spirit's illumination and know no other Spirit than the apostles' (S14–S16); and today's three grammar keys were the separated so ... that (S5's wedged as-clause, S7's two result-arms), the correction frame (did not ... but, not that ... but that, Quench not), and the bare subjunctive survivals (until it be confirmed, the moment prophesying fall) with the measures no less confidence than folly and trap-verb becomes = befits.
