영적 거식증: 생명을 거부하는 비극

세상이 너희를 미워하면 너희보다 먼저 나를 미워한 줄을 알라 (요한복음 15:18)“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” (John 15:18 )

내가 와서 그들에게 말하지 아니하였더라면 죄가 없었으려니와 지금은 그 죄를 핑계할 수 없느니라 (요한복음 15:22)“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.” (John 15:22)

내가 아버지께로부터 너희에게 보낼 보혜사 곧 아버지께로부터 나오시는 진리의 성령이 오실 때에 그가 나를 증언하실 것이요 (요한복음 15:26)“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.” (John 15:26)

서론

사랑하는 성도 여러분.Dear beloved congregation,

세상에는 거식증이라는 무서운 병이 있습니다.There is a frightening illness in this world called anorexia.

객관적으로는 너무나도 날씬한 자기를 너무 뚱뚱하다고 생각해서, 살이 찔까 봐 밥을 먹지 않다가 결국 굶어 죽기까지 하는 병입니다.It is a disease where a person who is objectively very thin believes they are too fat. Because they are afraid of gaining weight, they stop eating, and in the end, some even starve to death.

세상에 굶어 죽고 싶은 사람이 어디 있겠습니까?Who in the world would want to starve to death?

한 사람도 없습니다.No one.

그런데 그렇게 황당한 이유로 죽어가는 사람들이 있습니다.And yet there are people who are dying for such an unbelievable reason.

왜 그렇습니까? 스스로 속고 있기 때문입니다.Why does this happen? It is because they are deceiving themselves.

성도 여러분, 거식증 환자에게 가장 잔인한 것이 무엇인지 아십니까?Beloved congregation, do you know what the cruelest thing is for a person with anorexia?

그것은 그들이 매일 보는 거울입니다.It is the mirror they look at every day.

거울은 진실을 보여주는데, 그들의 눈에는 그 거울이 거짓을 말합니다.The mirror shows the truth, but to their eyes, that mirror seems to tell a lie.

뼈만 남은 몸을 보면서도 자신이 뚱뚱하다고 느끼게 만드는 무서운 속임수.They see a body that is nothing but bones, and yet they still feel that they are fat. What a terrifying deception.

맛있는 음식을 보고도 먹고 싶다는 욕구가 아니라, 이걸 먹으면 살이 찔 거야, 못생겨질 거야 라는 공포가 엄습합니다.Even when they see delicious food, instead of feeling a desire to eat it, fear rushes over them: “If I eat this, I will gain weight. I will become ugly.”

머릿속에 잘못된 생각이 들어가 스스로 속고 있기 때문입니다.This happens because wrong thoughts have entered their minds, and they are deceiving themselves.

성도 여러분, 이 비극이 우리에게 한 가지 영적 진실을 가르쳐 줍니다.Beloved congregation, this tragedy teaches us one spiritual truth.

사람이 어떤 식으로든 잘못된 생각에 속으면, 자기 생명을 자기가 거부하는 일이 실제로 일어난다는 것입니다.When a person is deceived by wrong thoughts in any way, it can actually lead them to reject their own life.

죽고 싶은 것은 결코 아닌데도, 놀랍게도 생명이 아니라 죽음을 선택하는 일이 일어나는 것입니다.They do not truly want to die, and yet, surprisingly, they end up choosing death instead of life.

그리고 그런 일은 육신의 차원에서만 일어나지 않습니다.And this does not happen only on a physical level.

영혼의 차원에서도 동일하게 일어나고, 오히려 더 심각하게 일어납니다.It happens in the soul as well, and in an even more serious way.

마귀는 6천 년간 동일한 거짓을 사용해 왔습니다.The devil has been using the same lie for six thousand years.

인간으로 하여금 사실이 아닌 것을 믿게 만들어 자기 마음대로 인간을 조종하고, 결국에는 파멸의 길로 몰아넣는 것입니다.He makes human beings believe what is not true, controls them as he wants, and in the end drives them down the road to destruction.

에덴동산에서 마귀는 — 선악과를 먹으면 하나님처럼 될 것이다 — 라며 이미 하나님의 형상대로 지어진 인간을 속였습니다.In the Garden of Eden, the devil said, “If you eat the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, you will become like God.” In this way, he deceived human beings who had already been created in the image of God.

그 결과로 인간의 삶에 고통과 죽음이 들어왔습니다.As a result, suffering and death entered human life.

광야에서 마귀는 — 그까짓 뱀 동상 본다고 살겠냐 — 라고 속삭여, 들린 놋뱀이 눈앞에 있는데도 고개를 들지 못하게 만들어 수천 명을 죽였습니다.In the wilderness, the devil whispered, “Do you really think you can live just by looking at some bronze snake?” Even though the bronze serpent had been lifted up right before their eyes, he kept them from raising their heads, and thousands died.

그리고 오늘 우리에게도 동일하게 속삭입니다 — 예수 믿는다고 별 수 있겠냐? 네 삶이 바뀌겠냐? 너 같은 게 감히 예수를 믿어?And today, he whispers the same thing to us: “Do you really think believing in Jesus will make any difference? Will your life really change? How could someone like you dare to believe in Jesus?”

성도 여러분, 마귀의 거짓이 우리에게 다가오는 모습은 달라도 본질은 하나입니다.Beloved congregation, even though the devil’s lies may come to us in different forms, their purpose is always the same.

생명이신 우리 주님과 우리 사이에 거리를 만드는 것입니다.They are meant to create distance between us and our Lord, who is life itself.

한 번에 큰 거리를 만들지 않고, 한 발자국씩 보이지 않게.Not by making a huge gap all at once, but slowly, one step at a time, in a way we do not even notice.

그래서 결국에는 우리가 죽음에 이르도록 만드는 것이 바로 마귀의 거짓입니다.In the end, the devil’s lies are meant to lead us to death.

그런데 오늘 본문 18절은 이렇게 시작합니다.But today’s passage begins this way in verse 18:

"세상이 너희를 미워하면 너희보다 먼저 나를 미워한 줄을 알라" (요 15:18).“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18).

성도 여러분, 이 한 마디가 중요합니다.Beloved congregation, this one word is important:

알라.Know.

모르고 당하면 무너집니다.If we suffer without knowing, we will collapse.

미리 알아야 견딜 수 있습니다.But when we know ahead of time, we can endure.

주님은 십자가를 앞두시고 우리에게 이 무거운 사실을 미리 알리시는 것입니다.Before going to the cross, the Lord is telling us this heavy truth in advance.

세상이 우리 주님을 향해 품는 미움 — 이것은 단순한 분노가 아닙니다.The hatred that the world holds toward our Lord is not simple anger.

거짓에 뿌리를 둔 영적 거식의 증상입니다.It is a symptom of spiritual anorexia, rooted in lies.

생명이신 예수 그리스도를 보고도 오히려 혐오를 품게 만드는 무서운 병입니다.It is a terrifying sickness that makes people look at Jesus Christ, who is life itself, and still feel hatred toward Him.

거식증 환자가 자기를 살리는 음식을 밀어내듯, 인류는 자기를 살리시는 생명 되시는 예수 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박아 밀어냈습니다.Just as a person with anorexia pushes away the food that would keep them alive, humanity pushed away Jesus Christ, the One who gives them life, by nailing Him to the cross.

그리고 지금도 수없이 많은 사람들이 주님을 미워하며 증오하며, 그렇게 자기 자신의 생명을 해하고 있는 것입니다.And even now, countless people hate the Lord and despise Him, and by doing so, they are harming their own lives.

이 이해할 수 없는 미움의 근원은 무엇입니까?What is the source of this hatred that we cannot understand?

영원히 죽어야 하는 마귀가 영원한 생명이신 예수 그리스도를 견디지 못하기 때문입니다.It is because the devil, who must die forever, cannot stand Jesus Christ, who is eternal life.

그리고 이 동일한 미움이 우리에게도 향합니다.And this same hatred is directed toward us as well.

왜 그렇습니까?Why is that?

우리도 그리스도의 생명을 지닌 자, 곧 성도이기 때문입니다.Because we, too, are people who carry the life of Christ. We are the saints of God.

마귀가 그리스도에게서 본 그 생명을 우리에게서도 봅니다.The devil sees in us the same life that he saw in Christ.

자기가 영원히 가질 수 없는 그 생명을 우리가 가졌기에, 동일한 미움이 우리에게로 오는 것입니다.Because we have the life that he can never possess, the same hatred comes toward us.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 주님께서는 이 비극 한가운데에서 우리를 향해 세 가지를 분명히 알려 주십니다.Dear beloved congregation, in the middle of this tragedy, the Lord clearly tells us three things:

우리가 미움받는 이유는 무엇인가, 그 미움 가운데 심판은 어떻게 작동하는가, 그리고 우리에게 주어진 사명은 무엇인가.Why we are hated, how judgment works in the middle of that hatred, and what mission has been given to us.

오늘 본문이 우리 한 사람 한 사람에게 직접 말씀하시는 음성을 함께 들어 봅시다.Let us listen together to the voice of today’s passage, as it speaks directly to each one of us.

첫째 단계 — 우리가 미움받는 이유 (요 15:18–21)

1. 미움은 그분 때문이지, 우리 때문이 아닙니다 (vv.18, 21)

성도 여러분, 세상이 우리를 미워한다면 그 이유가 무엇이겠습니까?Beloved congregation, if the world hates us, what would be the reason?

우리가 부족해서 그렇겠습니까? 우리가 잘못해서 그렇겠습니까?Is it because we are not good enough? Is it because we have done something wrong?

본문은 분명히 답합니다.The passage gives us a clear answer.

우리 때문이 아닙니다.It is not because of us.

우리가 섬기고, 우리 안에 하나님으로 모시는 주님 때문입니다.It is because of the Lord we serve, the Lord we welcome and honor as God in our hearts.

"사람들이 내 이름으로 말미암아 이 모든 일을 너희에게 하리니 이는 나를 보내신 이를 알지 못함이라" (요 15:21).“They will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me” (John 15:21).

세상은 먼저 생명이신 예수 그리스도를 외면했습니다.The world first turned away from Jesus Christ, who is life itself.

그래서 그분을 십자가에 못 박았습니다.That is why they nailed Him to the cross.

그 다음에 세상은 믿음으로 그 예수 그리스도를 바라보는 자들, 곧 우리를 미워합니다.Then the world hates those who look to that same Jesus Christ by faith—that is, us.

박해하는 자들의 마음 상태는 단 하나입니다 — 주님을, 하나님을 알아보지 못함입니다.The heart condition of those who persecute is this one thing: they do not recognize the Lord. They do not recognize God.

거식증 환자가 음식이 자신에게 생명을 주는 것임을 알아보지 못해 거부하듯, 그들은 그리스도가 생명이 되심을 알아보지 못해 미워하는 것입니다.Just as a person with anorexia rejects food because they do not recognize that it gives them life, they hate Christ because they do not recognize that He is life.

거식증 환자가 맛있게 음식을 먹는 사람을 보면 어떻게 되겠습니까?What happens when a person with anorexia sees someone eating food with joy?

불편해합니다.They feel uncomfortable.

자기 비극이 그 사람의 건강함에 의해 드러나기 때문입니다.Why? Because their own tragedy is revealed by that person’s health.

영적으로도 동일합니다.It is the same spiritually.

영적 거식에 걸린 세상은 생명을 먹는 자들을 견디지 못합니다.The world that suffers from spiritual anorexia cannot stand those who feed on life.

그래서 미워하는 것입니다.That is why it hates them.

성도 여러분, 그러므로 마음의 무거운 짐을 내려놓으시기 바랍니다.Beloved congregation, therefore, please lay down the heavy burden in your heart.

그리스도 때문에 받는 미움, 곧 진리를 따르고 주님의 자리를 지키려다 받는 미움 — 그 미움은 우리의 부족함 때문이 아닙니다.The hatred we receive because of Christ—the hatred we receive while following the truth and standing firm in the Lord’s place—is not because of our weakness.

우리 안에 계시는 그분 때문입니다.It is because of the One who lives in us.

우리는 그분을 가리는 자가 아니라, 그분을 모신 자입니다.We are not people who hide Him. We are people who carry Him within us.

2. 미움받음은 우리가 그분 곁에 서 있다는 증거입니다 (vv.19–20)

19절을 보십시오.Look at verse 19.

"너희가 세상에 속하였으면 세상이 자기의 것을 사랑할 것이나 너희는 세상에 속한 자가 아니요 도리어 내가 너희를 세상에서 택하였기 때문에 세상이 너희를 미워하느니라" (요 15:19).“If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you” (John 15:19).

성도 여러분, 한 가지를 분명히 해야 합니다.Beloved congregation, we must make one thing clear.

우리도 본래는 생명과 진리에서 멀어진 자였습니다.We, too, were originally far from life and truth.

우리도 본래 마귀의 거짓에 속아 영적 거식증의 자리에 있던 자였습니다.We, too, were once deceived by the devil’s lies and stood in the place of spiritual anorexia.

그런데 주님께서 우리를 건져, 주님만 바라보고 사는 생명의 자리로 옮겨 주셨습니다.But the Lord rescued us and moved us to the place of life, where we live by looking only to Him.

우리가 그리스도를 알아본 것은 우리가 똑똑해서가 아닙니다.The reason we recognized Christ is not because we are smart.

전적인 은혜입니다. 6천 년간 마귀의 속삼임에 속아온 인류 한복판에서, 하나님께서 우리를 건져 내신 것입니다.It is completely by grace. In the middle of humanity that has been deceived by the devil’s whispers for six thousand years, God rescued us.

그리고 20절은 한 가지 격언을 주십니다 — 종이 주인보다 더 크지 못하다.And in verse 20, the Lord gives us one saying: “A servant is not greater than his master.”

모세도 광야에서 미움 받았고, 들린 구리 뱀을 든 자도 미움 받았고, 결국 그리스도께서도 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다.Moses was hated in the wilderness. The one who lifted up the bronze serpent was also hated. And in the end, Christ Himself was nailed to the cross.

하나님 옆에 가까이 선 자의 자리는 언제나 세상의 미움을 받는 자리입니다.The place of the one who stands close to God has always been a place that receives the hatred of the world.

우리에게는 세상이 갖지 못한 하나님의 생명이 흘러 들어오기 때문입니다.That is because the life of God, which the world does not have, flows into us.

성도 여러분, 그런데 오늘 우리가 받는 미움은 1세기처럼 칼이나 감옥이 아닐 때가 많습니다.Beloved congregation, however, the hatred we receive today often does not come like it did in the first century, with swords or prisons.

오히려 더 가까이, 더 아프게 옵니다.Instead, it comes closer to us, and it hurts us more deeply.

평생 정직하게 살려고 손해를 감수해 온 우리에게, 세상은 융통성 없다고 비웃습니다.To those of us who have tried to live honestly our whole lives, even accepting loss because of it, the world laughs and says we are not flexible enough.

주일을 지키고 예배의 자리를 지키는 우리에게, 시대에 뒤떨어졌다고 핀잔을 줍니다.To those of us who keep the Lord’s Day and remain faithful in worship, the world scolds us and says we are behind the times.

신앙으로 키운 자녀가 어느 날 신앙을 떠나 우리를 시대착오라 부를 때, 그 시린 마음을 누가 알겠습니까?When a child we raised in the faith one day leaves the faith and calls us outdated, who can understand that cold pain in our hearts?

손주에게 한국말로 복음을 전하고 싶은데 언어가 막혀 답답할 때, 그 무력함을 누가 알겠습니까?When we want to share the gospel with our grandchildren in Korean, but language becomes a barrier, who can understand that helplessness?

1세대로 미국 땅에 와서 평생 신앙을 지켜온 우리에게 보내는 무관심과 무시를 견뎌보지 않은 사람이 어찌 알겠습니까?For those of us who came to America as the first generation and have guarded our faith all our lives, who can understand the indifference and disrespect we have had to endure unless they have experienced it themselves?

그러나 "이 나이에 무슨 기도냐", "이 나이에 무슨 신앙이냐" 라는 자기 안의 음성이 들릴 때, 그것 또한 마귀가 만드는 거리입니다.But when we hear a voice inside us saying, “At your age, why pray?” or “At your age, why keep believing?” that, too, is a distance created by the devil.

성도 여러분, 그것이 바로 오늘날 우리가 받는 미움이고, 오늘날 마귀가 우리에게 만들고자 하는 하나님과의 거리, 생명과의 거리입니다.Beloved congregation, that is the hatred we receive today. That is the distance from God, the distance from life, that the devil wants to create in us today.

그러나 세상에 속한 그들이 뱉는 냉소와 조롱과 무시는 사실 무엇입니까?But what are the sarcasm, mockery, and disrespect that come from those who belong to the world?

나도 당신처럼 살고 싶은데 나는 안 된다 는 절망의 신음소리입니다.They are actually groans of despair, saying, “I want to live like you, but I cannot.”

영적 거식에 걸린 자들이 영적으로 건강한 자들 앞에서 자기 비극이 드러나는, 그 고통의 표현입니다.They are the expression of pain from those suffering from spiritual anorexia, whose tragedy is revealed in front of those who are spiritually healthy.

그러니 무너지지 마십시오.So do not give up.

그 미움은 여러분이 주님 곁에 가까이 서 있다는 가장 확실한 증거입니다.That hatred is the clearest evidence that you are standing close to the Lord.

둘째 단계 — 변명할 수 없는 거역의 실상 (요 15:22–25)

1. 그리스도 오심으로 모든 것이 드러났습니다 (v.22)

"내가 와서 그들에게 말하지 아니하였더라면 죄가 없었으려니와 지금은 그 죄를 핑계할 수 없느니라" (요 15:22).“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin” (John 15:22).

주님 오시기 전에는 사람들이 자기 마음대로 하나님의 뜻을 추측할 수 있었습니다.Before the Lord came, people could guess God’s will however they wanted.

자기 식의 신앙으로 살아도, 그것이 옳은지 그른지 분명히 드러나지 않았습니다.Even if they lived by their own version of faith, it was not clearly revealed whether it was right or wrong.

하나님의 말씀이 멀리 있었기 때문입니다.That was because the Word of God seemed far away.

그런데 생명이시고 진리이신 하나님이 친히 우리 가운데 오셨습니다.But God Himself, who is life and truth, came among us.

우리의 영적 식탁에 진짜 생명의 양식이 차려진 것입니다.The true food of life was placed on our spiritual table.

그리고 그 식탁에 생명의 떡이신 주님이 오신 순간, 모든 것이 선명하게 갈라졌습니다.And the moment the Lord, who is the bread of life, came to that table, everything became clearly divided.

예수 그리스도를 영접하고 생명을 먹는 자와, 자신의 구원을 밀어내고 주님을 십자가에 못 박는 자로. 영적 거식의 정체가 실제적으로 드러난 것입니다.There were those who received Jesus Christ and fed on life, and there were those who pushed away their own salvation and nailed the Lord to the cross. The true nature of spiritual anorexia was clearly revealed in a real way.

그러므로 핑계할 수 없습니다.Therefore, they have no excuse.

진리와 죄가 동시에 선명하게 드러났기 때문입니다.Because both truth and sin were revealed clearly at the same time.

2. 그리스도 거부는 곧 생명 거부입니다 (v.23)

"나를 미워하는 자는 또 내 아버지를 미워하느니라" (요 15:23).“The one who hates me hates my Father also” (John 15:23).

성도 여러분, 그리스도를 거부하는 자는 그분을 보내신 아버지도 거부합니다.Beloved congregation, the one who rejects Christ also rejects the Father who sent Him.

아버지를 거부하는 자는 주님이 주시는 생명 자체를 거부합니다.The one who rejects the Father rejects the very life that the Lord gives.

십자가에 들리신 예수 그리스도, 우리를 구원하시려 독생자를 들리게 하신 아버지, 그리고 주님의 들리심으로 우리에게 오는 영원한 생명 — 이 셋은 한 묶음입니다.Jesus Christ lifted up on the cross, the Father who lifted up His only Son to save us, and the eternal life that comes to us through the Lord being lifted up—these three belong together.

광야에서도 그러했습니다.It was the same in the wilderness.

놋뱀을 쳐다보기를 거부한 자들은 단순히 무엇인가 자신들이 사용할 수 있는 도구를 거부한 것이 아니었습니다.Those who refused to look at the bronze serpent were not simply rejecting some tool they could use.

죽어가는 자들을 살리시기 위해 놋 뱀을 세우신 하나님과, 그 방법에 순종함으로 주어지는 생명 자체를 거부한 것이었습니다.They were rejecting God, who had raised up the bronze serpent to save those who were dying. They were rejecting the very life that was given through obedience to His way.

그들은 놀랍게도 생명이 아니라 죽음을 선택한 것입니다.Amazingly, they chose death instead of life.

오늘도 동일합니다.It is the same today.

그리스도를 거부하는 사람은 자기가 그냥 많은 가운데 한 종교를 거부한다 생각하지만, 사실은 자기 자신의 생명을 거부하고 죽음을 선택하고 있는 것입니다.When people reject Christ, they may think they are simply rejecting one religion among many. But in reality, they are rejecting their own life and choosing death.

왜냐하면 예수 그리스도 외에 길과 진리가 없고, 우리 주 예수 그리스도만이 유일하신 생명이 되시기 때문입니다.Why? Because apart from Jesus Christ, there is no way and no truth, and only our Lord Jesus Christ is the one true life.

3. 이유 없는 미움 — 이유 없는 사랑, 거리를 제로로 (vv.24–25)

"내가 아무도 못한 일을 그들 중에서 하지 아니하였더라면 그들에게 죄가 없었으려니와 지금은 그들이 나와 내 아버지를 보았고 또 미워하였도다. 그러나 이는 그들의 율법에 기록된 바 그들이 이유 없이 나를 미워하였다 한 말을 응하게 하려 함이라" (요 15:24–25).“If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason’” (John 15:24–25).

성도 여러분, 잠깐 이 한 장면을 생각해 보십시오.Beloved congregation, think about this scene for a moment.

광야에서 불뱀에 물려 죽어가지만 쳐다만 보면 살 수 있는 들린 놋뱀이 눈앞에 있는데, 고개를 돌리는 사람.In the wilderness, a person is dying after being bitten by a fiery serpent. The bronze serpent has been lifted up right in front of them, and all they have to do is look at it to live. But they turn their head away.

믿기만 하면 영생을 주시는 예수 그리스도가 눈앞에 계시는데도 외면하는 사람.Jesus Christ is standing before them, the One who gives eternal life to anyone who believes. And yet they still turn away from Him.

이게 말이 됩니까?Does this make any sense?

살기보다 죽기를 선택한다는 것은 말이 안 됩니다.Choosing death instead of life does not make sense.

그런데 그것이 사람이 하는 일입니다.And yet this is what human beings do.

죄는 합리적이지 않습니다.Sin is not rational.

생명보다 죽음을 택하는 것 — 세상에 이보다 더 비합리한 일이 어디 있겠습니까.Choosing death over life—what could be more unreasonable than that?

그러나 바로 그것이 마귀의 거짓에 속은 사람들이 오늘 하는 일입니다.And yet this is exactly what people deceived by the devil’s lies are doing today.

성도 여러분, 어떻게 사람이 이렇게 비합리한 일을 합니까?Beloved congregation, how can people do something this irrational?

하나님을, 진리를, 생명을 알아보지 못하기 때문입니다.It is because they do not recognize God, truth, or life.

창조주께서 친히 오셨는데, 그분이 행하시는 기적을 보고도 사람들은 그분을 한 인간으로만 보았습니다.The Creator Himself came to them, and even when people saw the miracles He performed, they still saw Him only as a man.

그것은 우리가 우리를 창조하신 하나님을 직접 뵙고도 알아볼 수 없는 지경까지 타락했다는 증거입니다.This proves how deeply we have fallen—that even if we see the God who created us with our own eyes, we are no longer able to recognize Him.

그리고 성도 여러분, 그 "이유 없이 미움 받음" 이 절정에 이른 자리가 어디입니까?And beloved congregation, where did this “hatred without reason” reach its highest point?

갈보리 십자가입니다.At the cross of Calvary.

죄 없으신 살아계신 하나님이 채찍에 맞으셨습니다.The sinless, living God was whipped.

가시관을 쓰셨습니다.He wore a crown of thorns.

손과 발에 못이 박히셨습니다.Nails were driven through His hands and feet.

예수님이 미움 받으실 이유는 단 하나도 없었습니다.There was not a single reason for Jesus to be hated.

우리 주님은 이 세상에서 이유 없이 미움을 받으신 것입니다.Our Lord was hated in this world without reason.

그런데 성도 여러분, 바로 거기서 한 가지 놀라운 사실이 드러납니다.But beloved congregation, right there, one amazing truth is revealed.

세상은 우리 주님을 미워할 이유를 찾지 못해 이유 없이 미워했습니다.The world could not find a reason to hate our Lord, so it hated Him without reason.

그러나 우리 주님은 우리를 사랑하실 이유를 찾지 못하셨음에도 이유 없이 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 우리를 살리시기 위하여 자기 목숨을 내어 주셨습니다.But even though our Lord could not find a reason to love us, He loved us without reason, and He gave His life to save us.

마귀의 속삭임은 오늘도 우리에게 묻습니다 — 네가 이 모양인데 주님이 너를 사랑하시겠냐?The devil’s whisper still asks us today:

네 죄가 이 정도인데 주님이 받아주시겠냐?“Look at the mess you are in. Do you really think the Lord would love you?”

네가 무얼 한 게 있다고 주님이 너를 기억하시겠냐?“Your sins are this serious. Do you really think the Lord would accept you?” “What have you ever done that would make the Lord remember you?”

너 같은 거는 주님도 안 받아주실거다!“Someone like you will never be accepted by the Lord!”

그러나 성도 여러분, 주님이 우리를 구원하시기 위해 달리신 십자가는 단 한 마디로 그 모든 마귀의 속삭임에 대한 주님의 답이 되시는 것입니다.But beloved congregation, the cross on which the Lord hung to save us becomes His answer to all those whispers of the devil in one sentence:

이유 같은 거 필요 없다.“No reason is needed.

나는 너를 사랑한다.I love you.

네가 너를 사랑하는 것보다 내가 너를 더 사랑한다.I love you more than you love yourself.”

성도 여러분, 이것을 마음에 새기십시오.Beloved congregation, engrave this truth in your hearts.

우리가 사랑받을 자격이 있어서 주님이 우리를 사랑하신 것이 아닙니다.The Lord did not love us because we deserved to be loved.

우리가 똑똑해서, 우리가 거룩해서, 우리가 잘나서 사랑하신 것이 아닙니다.He did not love us because we were smart, because we were holy, or because we were impressive.

그저 사랑하셨습니다. 이유 없이 사랑하신 것입니다.He simply loved us. He loved us without a reason.

그리고 바로 이 이유 없는 사랑이 — 마귀가 6천 년간 한 발자국씩 만들어 온 그 거리를 — 한 순간에 부숩니다.And this love without a reason destroys, in a single moment, the distance that the devil has been building step by step for six thousand years.

하나님과의 거리 생명과의 거리를 제로로 만듭니다.It brings the distance between us and God, the distance between us and life, down to zero.

마귀가 평생 만들어 온 거리가 그리스도의 죽음과 부활과 승천으로 무너지는 것입니다.The distance the devil has been building all our lives is torn down through the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.

십자가는 이유 없는 미움과 이유 없는 사랑이 충돌하는 자리입니다.The cross is the place where hatred without reason and love without reason collide.

그리고 거기서 사랑이 미움을 완전히 승리하는 것입니다.And there, love completely triumphs over hatred.

4. 알아본 자 — 전적인 은혜의 증거

성도 여러분, 그러므로 우리는 어떠한 심판에 대해서도 억울하다 말할 수 없는 죄인들입니다.Beloved congregation, therefore, we are sinners who cannot say that any judgment against us is unfair.

우리 안의 죄가 차고도 넘쳐 하나님을 직접 뵙고도 알아볼 수 없는 지경까지, 하나님이 거룩하게 지으신 본 모습이 망가졌기 때문입니다.The sin within us is more than enough. It has damaged the holy image in which God first created us, to the point that even if we saw God directly, we would not be able to recognize Him.

그러나 여기에 반전이 있습니다.But here is the reversal.

우리는 세상과 다르게 주님을 알아본 자들이라는 것입니다.Unlike the world, we are the ones who recognized the Lord.

우리도 본래는 하나님을 알아볼 수 없는 죄인이었습니다.We, too, were originally sinners who could not recognize God.

우리도 본래 놋뱀을 비웃던 자들이었습니다.We, too, were originally people who mocked the bronze serpent.

그런데 어느 날 — 성령께서 고집 피우며 외면하던 우리의 고개를 친히 돌려 나대신 십자가에 들리신 예수 그리스도를 보게 하셨습니다.But one day—the Holy Spirit Himself turned our heads, even though we were stubbornly looking away, and made us see Jesus Christ lifted up on the cross in our place.

우리 힘으로 본 것이 아닙니다.We did not see Him by our own strength.

거룩하신 하나님이 내 고개를 돌려 예수 그리스도를 보게 해주신 것입니다.The holy God turned our heads and allowed us to see Jesus Christ.

그분이 우리 안에 말씀하신 것입니다 — 보아라, 네 구원이, 생명이 저기 있다.He spoke within us: “Look. Your salvation, your life, is there.”

그 한 마디 손길 덕분에 우리 모두는 오늘 이 자리에 있을 수 있는 것입니다.Because of that one word, because of that one touch, all of us are able to be here today.

그러므로 우리에게 두 가지가 남습니다.Therefore, two things remain for us.

첫째, 하나님을 향한 감사입니다.First, gratitude toward God.

우리의 믿음과 신앙은 자랑할 일이 아니라 감사할 일입니다.Our faith and belief are not things to boast about, but things to be thankful for.

우리는 주님을 통해 하나님께 구원받은 자들이지, 구원을 쟁취한 자들이 아니기 때문입니다.Because we are people who have been saved by God through the Lord, not people who won salvation by our own strength.

둘째, 매일의 집중입니다.Second, daily focus.

진리이신 주님을 알아본 우리는, 매일 다시 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 바라보아야 하는 것입니다.We who have recognized the Lord, who is the truth, must look again every day to our Lord Jesus Christ.

성도 여러분, 그래서 한 가지를 분명히 마음에 새기십시다.Beloved congregation, let us clearly engrave this one truth in our hearts.

마귀는 끊임없이 거짓으로 우리와 주님 사이에 거리를 만들고자 거짓으로 우리를 공격합니다.The devil constantly attacks us with lies in order to create distance between us and the Lord.

그러나 보혜사 성령은 진리로 그 거짓과 하나님과 우리 사이의 거리를 부수십니다.But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, destroys those lies and the distance between God and us through the truth.

이것이 우리 신앙의 일상입니다.This is the daily life of our faith.

그리고 본문은 이제 그 보혜사의 약속과 우리의 사명으로 우리를 데려갑니다.And now, the passage leads us to the promise of the Counselor and to our mission.

셋째 단계 — 박해를 뚫고 나가는 이중 증언 (요 15:26–27)

1. 보혜사의 약속 — 끊어지지 않는 증거 (v.26)

"내가 아버지께로부터 너희에게 보낼 보혜사 곧 아버지께로부터 나오시는 진리의 성령이 오실 때에 그가 나를 증거하실 것이요" (요 15:26).“When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father—he will testify about me” (John 15:26).

성도 여러분, 한 가지 의문이 자연스럽게 떠오를 수 있습니다.Beloved congregation, one question may naturally come to mind.

우리는 앞에서 22절을 보았습니다 — 그리스도가 친히 오심으로 우리에게 진리가 드러나 핑계할 수 없게 되었다는 말씀이었습니다.Earlier, we looked at verse 22. It said that because Christ Himself came, the truth was revealed to us, and we no longer have any excuse.

그렇다면 주님이 하늘로 돌아가신 후, 오늘 우리 시대에는 그분을 직접 보지 못하니, 다시 핑계할 수 있는 자리가 되는 것이 아닌가?Then what about our time today, after the Lord has returned to heaven? Since we have not seen Him directly, does that mean people can have an excuse again?

이런 의문이 생길 수 있습니다.This question may arise.

여기에 대해 본문 26절이 답합니다.Verse 26 answers this for us.

주님은 자기가 떠나실 것을 아셨습니다.The Lord knew that He would leave.

동시에 그리스도의 증거가 끊어지지 않을 것도 약속하셨습니다.At the same time, He promised that the testimony about Christ would not stop.

보혜사 성령이 지속적으로 그리스도를 증거하시고, 기록된 말씀도 그분을 증거하기 때문입니다.That is because the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, continues to testify about Christ, and the written Word also testifies about Him.

영적 식탁은 영원히 차려진 상태로 유지되고 모든 사람은 이 잔치에 초대됩니다.The spiritual table remains set forever, and every person is invited to this feast.

모든 시대의 사람이 동일하게 예수 그리스도 앞에 서 있습니다.People of every age stand equally before Jesus Christ.

모두가 초대받았으니 주님을 믿음으로 그 자리에 앉기만 하면 되는 것입니다.Everyone has been invited, so all they need to do is sit at that table by faith in the Lord.

그러므로 그때 사람들이 핑계할 수 없었듯이, 오늘 우리도 전혀 핑계할 수 없는 자리에 있는 것입니다.Therefore, just as the people at that time had no excuse, we today also stand in a place where we have no excuse at all.

성도 여러분, 우리에게는 두 가지 증거가 있습니다.Beloved congregation, we have two witnesses.

말씀은 기록된 증거입니다.The Word is the written witness.

우리 밖에서 영구히 보존됩니다.It is permanently preserved outside of us.

성령은 살아있는 증거이십니다.The Holy Spirit is the living witness.

우리 안에서 매 순간 새롭게 작용하십니다.He works freshly within us every moment.

두 증거가 협력하여 유일하신 우리의 구세주이신 예수 그리스도를 증거합니다.These two witnesses work together to testify about Jesus Christ, our one and only Savior.

말씀이 식탁이라면, 성령은 그 식탁의 양식이 진짜 생명임을 우리 마음에 깨닫게 하시는 분이신 것입니다.If the Word is the table, then the Holy Spirit is the One who helps our hearts understand that the food on that table is truly life.

2. 우리 안의 두 음성

성도 여러분, 그래서 우리 안에는 매일 두 가지 음성이 들립니다.Beloved congregation, this is why we hear two voices inside us every day.

그리고 이 두 음성을 분별하는 것이 우리의 매일의 영적 전쟁입니다.And learning to discern these two voices is our daily spiritual battle.

마귀의 속삼임은 이렇게 말합니다The devil’s whisper says this:

— 너는 끝났다.“You are finished.

하나님은 너에게서 멀리 계신다.God is far away from you.

네 기도는 닿지 않는다.Your prayers will not reach Him.

그까짓 말씀 좀 안 본다고 무슨 일 있겠냐.What difference does it make if you skip the Word a little?

예수 믿어도 꼬일대로 꼬인 네 인생은 별 수 없다.Even if you believe in Jesus, your life is already too tangled up. Nothing will change.”

그러나 보혜사 성령의 증거는 이렇게 말합니다But the testimony of the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, says this:

— 예수가 여기 네 안에 계신다.“Jesus is here within you.

네 고개를 들어 오직 예수 그리스도를 바라 보라.Lift up your head and look only to Jesus Christ.

십자가에 들리신 예수께서 네 대신 너를 구원하기 위해 십자가에 달리셨다.Jesus, who was lifted up on the cross, was crucified in your place to save you.

주님은 너에게서 멀지 않으시고 네 안에 계신다.The Lord is not far from you. He is within you.

오늘도 성경 한 구절을 보라.Look at even one verse of Scripture today.”

성도 여러분, 이 두 음성이 모두 우리 안에서 들립니다.Beloved congregation, both of these voices are heard inside us.

두 음성이 모두 마치 자기 생각처럼 들립니다.Both voices sound as if they are our own thoughts.

그것이 영적 전쟁의 정체입니다.That is the true nature of spiritual warfare.

본문 26절은 보혜사를 진리의 영이라 부르십니다.Verse 26 calls the Counselor the Spirit of truth.

성경은 마귀를 거짓의 아비라고 부르십니다.The Bible calls the devil the father of lies.

보혜사는 단지 우리를 돕는 분이 아닙니다.The Counselor is not only the One who helps us.

마귀의 거짓을 부수시는 진리의 증언자이십니다.He is the witness of truth who destroys the devil’s lies.

마귀가 우리와 하나님 사이에 거리를 만들려 할 때, 보혜사는 그리스도를 증거하시며 그 거리를 부수십니다.When the devil tries to create distance between us and God, the Counselor testifies about Christ and breaks down that distance.

이것이 오늘 우리에게 주어진 가장 큰 위로이자 능력입니다.This is the greatest comfort and power given to us today.

3. 너희도 증거하느니라 — 두 증언이 만나는 자리 (v.27)

"너희도 처음부터 나와 함께 있었으므로 증거하느니라" (요 15:27).“And you also must testify, because you have been with me from the beginning” (John 15:27).

성도 여러분, 보혜사 혼자가 아닙니다.Beloved congregation, the Counselor does not testify alone.

우리도 그 증언에 합류하는 자입니다.We also join in that testimony.

우리가 주 예수 그리스도를 증거할 수 있는 근거는 단 하나 — 우리도 주님을 만난 자들이기 때문입니다.There is only one reason we can testify about our Lord Jesus Christ: because we, too, have met the Lord.

우리도 본래 주님을 알아볼 수 없던 자였으나 이제는 주 예수 그리스도를 알아본 자가 되었기에, 이제 다른 사람에게 예수 그리스도를 증거할 수 있는 자리에 선 것입니다.We were once people who could not recognize the Lord. But now we have become people who have recognized our Lord Jesus Christ. And because of that, we now stand in a place where we can testify about Jesus Christ to others.

그렇다면 성도 여러분, 보혜사의 증언과 우리의 증언이 어떻게 만납니까?Then, beloved congregation, how do the testimony of the Counselor and our testimony meet?

추상적인 이야기가 아닙니다.This is not an abstract idea.

우리의 일상의 가장 평범한 자리에서 만납니다.They meet in the most ordinary places of our daily lives.

성도 여러분, 여러분이 손주를 위해 기도하실 때를 생각해 보십시오.Beloved congregation, think about the times when you pray for your grandchildren.

여러분은 한국말로 기도하시지요.You pray in Korean, don’t you?

"주님, 우리 손주를 지켜주세요. 그 아이가 예수님을 알게 해주세요."“Lord, please protect my grandchild. Please let this child come to know Jesus.”

그 기도를 영어를 쓰는 손주가 알아듣지 못합니다.Your English-speaking grandchild may not understand that prayer.

그러나 성도 여러분, 여러분이 한국말로 기도할 때, 성령께서 그 아이의 영혼 속에서 하늘의 언어로 통역하고 계십니다.But beloved congregation, when you pray in Korean, the Holy Spirit is translating it into the language of heaven inside that child’s soul.

여러분의 떨리는 한국말 기도가 보혜사의 손에 들려 그 아이의 마음 속에서 그리스도를 증거하고 있는 것입니다.Your trembling Korean prayer is held in the hands of the Counselor, and in that child’s heart, it is testifying about Christ.

이것이 두 증언이 만나는 자리입니다.That is where the two testimonies meet.

또 생각해 보십시오.Think about this as well.

늙고 병든 몸으로 예배의 자리를 지키시는 그 모습.You continue to keep your place in worship, even with an aging and sick body.

세상은 그것을 보고 "노욕이다", "이 나이에 뭘 그러느냐"라고 비웃을지 모릅니다.The world may look at that and mock you, saying, “That is just old stubbornness,” or “Why bother at your age?”

그러나 성도 여러분, 그 모습이 무엇입니까?But beloved congregation, what is that 모습?

여러분의 나이 드신 몸으로 주일을 지키는 그 모습 자체가 — '예수가 나의 목숨보다 귀하다'는 한 마디 설교를 온 몸으로 선포하고 있는 것입니다.The very sight of you keeping the Lord’s Day with your aging body is a sermon preached with your whole body: “Jesus is more precious than my own life.”

여러분의 무릎이 한 번 꿇어지는 그 자리에서, 보혜사께서는 자녀와 손주의 영혼 속에 그리스도의 무게를 새기고 계십니다.In the place where your knees bend even once in prayer, the Counselor is engraving the weight of Christ into the souls of your children and grandchildren.

그것이 주님과 우리의 증언이 만나는 자리입니다.That is where the Lord’s testimony and our testimony meet.

성도 여러분, 우리는 우리가 살아 있는 그 자리에서 주 예수 그리스도를 증언하고 가리키라고 부름받았습니다.Beloved congregation, we have been called to testify to and point to our Lord Jesus Christ in the very place where we are living.

보혜사는 사람의 마음 안에서 그리스도를 증거하시고, 우리는 사람의 삶속에서 그리스도를 증거합니다.The Counselor testifies about Christ inside people’s hearts, and we testify about Christ in people’s lives.

두 증언이 함께 마귀가 만든 거짓을, 주님과 나의 사이의 거리를 박살을 내는 것입니다.Together, these two testimonies smash the lies the devil has created, and they destroy the distance between the Lord and us.

세상에는 두 가지 속삼임이 있습니다.There are two whispers in this world.

마귀의 속삼임은 사람의 시선을 그리스도에게서 돌리게 합니다.The devil’s whisper turns people’s eyes away from Christ.

한 발자국씩, 보이지 않게. 그리고 결국 죽음으로 이끕니다.One step at a time, in a way they cannot see. And in the end, it leads them to death.

보혜사와 우리의 증언은 사람의 시선을 그리스도께로 돌리게 합니다.But the testimony of the Counselor and our testimony turn people’s eyes back to Christ.

한 발자국씩, 회복으로. 그리고 결국 생명으로 이끕니다.One step at a time, toward restoration. And in the end, it leads them to life.

이 두 속삼임 사이에 인간의 영혼이 서 있습니다.Between these two whispers stands the human soul.

우리 가족이, 이웃이, 동료가, 다음 세대가 그 자리에 서 있습니다.Our families, our neighbors, our coworkers, and the next generation are standing in that place.

우리는 그 자리에서 주 예수 그리스도를 외치고 증언하는 자로 부름받았습니다.And we have been called to stand there as people who proclaim and testify about our Lord Jesus Christ.

4. 오늘 우리의 결단

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 이 자리를 떠나기 전에, 한 가지 결단을 함께 드리고 싶습니다.Dear beloved congregation, before we leave this place today, I want us to make one commitment together.

첫째, 오늘부터 매일 성경 한 절을 읽으십시오.First, starting today, read one verse of the Bible every day.

한 장이 어려우면 한 절입니다.If one chapter is difficult, then read one verse.

보혜사께서 그 한 절로 마귀의 거짓된 속삼임을 끊으실 것입니다.The Counselor will use that one verse to cut off the devil’s false whispers.

마귀가 만든 하나님과의 거리를 그 한 절이 부술 것입니다.That one verse will break the distance from God that the devil has created.

둘째, 한 사람을 마음에 품으십시오.Second, carry one person in your heart.

자녀일 수도 있고, 손주일 수도 있고, 옆집 이웃일 수도 있고, 한국에 두고 온 형제자매일 수도 있습니다.It may be your child. It may be your grandchild. It may be your neighbor next door. It may be a brother or sister you left behind in Korea.

그 사람을 위해 매일 한 번 주님께 기도 하십시오.Pray to the Lord for that person once every day.

보혜사 성령께서 같이 기도하실 것입니다.The Holy Spirit, the Counselor, will pray with you.

그리고 기회가 올 때, 주님이 우리에게 하신 일을 한 마디라도 전하십시오.And when the opportunity comes, share even one word about what the Lord has done for us.

그것이 우리의 증언입니다.That is our testimony.

결론 — 떨리는 손가락이 가리키는 십자가

광야에서 모세는 들린 놋뱀을 가리켰습니다.In the wilderness, Moses pointed to the lifted-up bronze serpent.

그 놋뱀을 바라 본 자는 살았습니다.Those who looked at that bronze serpent lived.

외면한 자는 죽었습니다.Those who turned away died.

오늘 우리는 십자가에 들린 그리스도를 가리킵니다.Today, we point to Christ, who was lifted up on the cross.

주님을 바라보는 자는 영원히 삽니다.Those who look to Him will live forever.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 한 가지 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다.Dear beloved congregation, I want to say one thing to you.

노년의 손가락은 떨릴지 모릅니다.The fingers of old age may tremble.

그러나 그 떨리는 손가락이 가리키는 십자가는 그 어느 때보다 확실합니다.But the cross that those trembling fingers point to is more certain than ever.

젊은 날의 화려한 증언보다, 고난과 세파를 다 견뎌내고 마지막까지 십자가를 가리키는 그 손가락이 — 다음 세대에게는 가장 큰 복음의 이정표가 됩니다.More than the impressive testimony of youth, the finger that has endured suffering and the storms of life, and still points to the cross until the end—that finger becomes the greatest gospel signpost for the next generation.

자녀가 보고 있습니다. 손주가 보고 있습니다.Your children are watching. Your grandchildren are watching.

이웃이 보고 있습니다.Your neighbors are watching.

여러분의 그 떨리는 손가락이 가리키는 그 자리를 그들이 언젠가 따라올 것입니다.And one day, they will follow the place that your trembling finger has been pointing to.

성도 여러분, 마귀는 거짓으로 우리와 주님 사이에 거리를 만듭니다.Beloved congregation, the devil creates distance between us and the Lord through lies.

그러나 보혜사는 진리로 그 거리를 부수십니다.But the Counselor destroys that distance through truth.

그리고 이유 없는 사랑이 십자가에서 그 거리를 제로로 만듭니다.And love without reason brings that distance down to zero at the cross.

이것이 오늘 우리에게 주신 약속이고, 우리 신앙의 일상입니다.This is the promise given to us today, and this is the daily life of our faith.

오늘 성경 한 절을 펴십시오.Open one verse of the Bible today.

한 사람을 품으십시오.Carry one person in your heart.

세상의 미움에 무너지지 마십시오.Do not collapse under the hatred of the world.

그리고 떨리는 손가락이라도, 마지막 한 호흡까지 그 십자가를 가리키는 자로 살아갑시다.And even with trembling fingers, let us live as people who point to that cross until our very last breath.

보혜사 성령께서 우리와 함께 하실 것입니다.The Holy Spirit, the Counselor, will be with us.

마귀가 만든 거짓의 음모가 부서지고, 그리스도와 우리의 영혼 사이에 살아있는 진리와 생명의 길이 열릴 것입니다.The devil’s schemes of lies will be broken, and the living path of truth and life will be opened between Christ and our souls.

그것이 오늘 우리에게 주신 사명입니다.That is the mission given to us today.
