나는 세상에 더 있지 아니하오나 그들은 세상에 있사옵고 나는 아버지께로 가옵나니 거룩하신 아버지여 내게 주신 아버지의 이름으로 그들을 보전하사 우리와 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하옵소 (요한복음 17:11)“I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.” (John 17:11)

서론 — 평생 품어온 질문

사랑하는 성도 여러분,Dear beloved church family,

오늘 저는 한 가지 질문으로 말씀을 시작하려 합니다.Today, I want to begin the message with one question.

어쩌면 이것은 우리가 평생 마음 깊은 곳에 품고 살아왔지만, 쉽게 입 밖으로 꺼내지 못했던 질문일지 모릅니다.Maybe this is a question we have carried deep in our hearts all our lives, but have not been able to say out loud easily.

그것은 “나는 분명히 예수님을 믿고 하나님의 자녀가 되었는데, 왜 여전히 아프고, 왜 여전히 늙어가며, 결국에는 죽음을 피할 수 없는가?”라는 질문입니다.The question is this: “Even though I clearly believe in Jesus and have become a child of God, why do I still suffer? Why do I still grow old? And why, in the end, can I not escape death?”

우리는 예수 그리스도를 믿어 죄 사함을 받았습니다.We have received forgiveness of sins by believing in Jesus Christ.

천국 백성이 되었습니다.We have become citizens of heaven.

하나님의 사랑받는 자녀가 되었습니다.We have become beloved children of God.

구원을 받았습니다.We have been saved.

그런데 우리의 몸은 여전히 약해집니다.And yet, our bodies still grow weak.

여전히 병과 싸웁니다.We still fight sickness.

여전히 일터에서 땀을 흘려야 합니다.We still have to sweat and labor at work.

여전히 자녀를 위해 새벽마다 눈물로 기도합니다.We still pray with tears early in the morning for our children.

그리고 결국에는 늙어가고 죽음의 현실을 마주합니다.And in the end, we grow old and face the reality of death.

그러면 묻게 됩니다.Then we begin to ask:

우리는 구원받았고 하나님께서는 수많은 우리의 기도를 응답해 주셨는데 왜 이 문제들은 아직도 해결되지 않았습니까?We have been saved, and God has answered so many of our prayers, so why have these problems still not been solved?

하나님의 능력이 부족해서입니까? 우리의 믿음이 부족해서입니까? 아니면 우리가 받은 구원이 아직 불완전한 것입니까?Is it because God’s power is not enough? Is it because our faith is not enough? Or is the salvation we received still incomplete?

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 이 질문을 마음에 품고 요한복음 17장 앞에 서 보십시오.Dear beloved church family, hold this question in your heart today as we stand before John chapter 17.

놀랍게도 주님께서는 십자가를 지시기 불과 몇 시간 전, 바로 이 질문에 답하는 기도를 아버지께 드리셨습니다.Amazingly, just a few hours before our Lord went to the cross, He prayed to the Father in a way that answers this very question.

오늘 말씀을 이해하기 위해 한 가지 그림을 마음에 그려 보십시오.To understand today’s message, I want you to picture one thing in your mind.

우리 앞에는 두 개의 큰 사건이 있습니다.Before us, there are two great events.

하나는 십자가입니다. 다른 하나는 재림입니다.One is the cross. The other is the Second Coming.

십자가에서 우리의 구원은 결정적으로 이루어졌습니다. 우리의 죄와 정죄의 문제가 완전히 해결되었습니다.At the cross, our salvation was decisively accomplished. The problem of our sin and condemnation was completely solved.

그러므로 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑의 흐름 안으로 하나님의 자녀로 초대되었습니다.Therefore, we became children of God. As God’s children, we were invited into the flow of love within the Triune God.

그러나 재림의 날, 그 구원은 우리 육신의 눈에도 보이도록 실현될 것입니다.But on the day of the Second Coming, that salvation will be fulfilled in a way that even our physical eyes can see.

우리의 썩을 몸이 부활의 몸을 입을 것입니다.Our perishable bodies will be clothed with resurrection bodies.

다시는 사망도 없고, 아픔도 없고, 눈물도 없는 영광의 날이 올 것입니다.A glorious day will come when there will be no more death, no more pain, and no more tears.

그렇다면 우리는 지금 어디에 있습니까?Then where are we now?

우리는 십자가와 재림 사이에 있습니다.We are between the cross and the Second Coming.

구원은 이미 시작되었고, 그 결정적 근거는 십자가에서 완성되었습니다..Salvation has already begun, and its decisive foundation was completed at the cross.

그러나 아직 구원의 모든 결과가 완전히 드러나지는 않았습니다.But not all the results of salvation have been fully revealed yet.

그리고 우리는 그 사이의 시간을 살아가고 있습니다.And we are living in the time between.

그래서 성도는 구원받았지만 여전히 아픕니다.That is why believers are saved, but still suffer pain.

하나님의 자녀이지만 여전히 눈물을 흘립니다.We are children of God, but still shed tears.

천국 백성이지만 아직 부활의 몸을 입지는 않았습니다.We are citizens of heaven, but we have not yet received our resurrection bodies.

그렇다면 왜 하나님은 이 사이의 시간을 두셨습니까?Then why did God place us in this in-between time?

이 시간 속에서 우리의 고난은 어떤 의미를 가집니까?What meaning does our suffering have during this time?

그리고 이 시간의 끝에는 무엇이 우리를 기다리고 있습니까?And what is waiting for us at the end of this time?

오늘 우리는 주님의 기도를 다섯 가지로 따라가 보겠습니다.Today, we will follow the Lord’s prayer in five parts.

첫째, 십자가에서 모든 것이 시작되고 완결되었습니다. 요한복음 17:4

요한복음 17장은 매우 특별한 자리에 놓여 있습니다.John chapter 17 is placed in a very special setting.

13장부터 16장까지 주님은 제자들에게 마지막 말씀을 하셨습니다.From chapters 13 to 16, the Lord gave His final words to His disciples.

그리고 18장부터는 주님의 체포와 십자가의 길이 시작됩니다.And from chapter 18, the arrest of Jesus and the road to the cross begin.

그러니까 요한복음 17장은 십자가를 불과 몇 시간 앞두고 드리신 주님의 기도입니다.So John chapter 17 is the prayer our Lord offered just a few hours before the cross.

그런데 그 기도 속에서 주님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다.And in that prayer, the Lord says this:

“아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니.” (요한복음 17:4 )“I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.” (John 17:4)

주님은 아직 십자가에 달리지 않으셨습니다. 아직 채찍에 맞지도 않으셨습니다.The Lord had not yet been nailed to the cross. He had not yet been whipped.

아직 못 박히지도 않으셨습니다.He had not yet been pierced with nails.

주님의 십자가에서의 구원의 사역은 사실 시작도 안한 상태인 것입니다.In fact, the saving work of the Lord on the cross had not even begun yet.

그런데 주님은 이미 “내가 이루었다”고 말씀하십니다.And yet, the Lord already says, “I have accomplished it.”

왜 그렇습니까?Why is that?

우리 주님의 십자가의 순종이 너무나 확실하기 때문입니다.It is because our Lord’s obedience to the cross was absolutely certain.

성부 하나님이 세우신 창세 전의 구원 계획이 털끝만큼도 흔들릴 수 없는 절대적인 사실이기 때문이며, 이를 향한 하나님의 의지는 바뀔 수 있는 것이 아니기 때문입니다.It is because the plan of salvation that God the Father established before the creation of the world was an absolute reality that could not be shaken even in the slightest. And it is because God’s will toward that plan could never change.

십자가가 낳을 구원의 완성이 너무나 확실하여, 아직 일어나지 않은 사건을 이미 '다 완료된 영적 실재'로 선언하시는 것입니다.The completion of salvation that the cross would bring was so certain that Jesus declared an event that had not yet happened as an already completed spiritual reality.

아니 하나님께서 이루고자 하시면 그것은 이미 이루어진 것이 바로 우리가 깨달아야 할 영적인 현실입니다.In fact, when God decides to accomplish something, it is already accomplished. This is the spiritual reality we must understand.

그래서 실제로 주님은 십자가 위에서 마지막으로 이렇게 외치셨습니다.That is why, on the cross, the Lord finally cried out these words:

“다 이루었다.”“It is finished.”

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리의 구원은 우리의 감정 위에 세워진 것이 아닙니다.Dear beloved church family, our salvation is not built on our feelings.

우리의 믿음의 컨디션 위에 세워진 것도 아닙니다. 우리의 공로나 자격 위에 세워진 것도 아닙니다.It is not built on the condition of our faith. It is not built on our good works or our worthiness.

우리의 구원은 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가 위에 세워졌습니다.Our salvation is built on the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

우리는 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가 안에서 죄와 정죄로부터 이미 용서받았습니다.In the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have already been forgiven from sin and condemnation.

그러나 우리의 몸과 온 피조세계의 완전한 회복은 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 재림의 날에 드러날 것입니다.But the complete restoration of our bodies and of all creation will be revealed on the day of the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

구원은 십자가에서 완벽하게 이루어졌습니다.Salvation was perfectly accomplished at the cross.

그러나 그 구원의 완전한 실현은 재림의 날에 드러납니다.But the full fulfillment of that salvation will be revealed on the day of the Second Coming.

그러므로 우리의 마음이 흔들려도 십자가는 흔들리지 않습니다.Therefore, even when our hearts are shaken, the cross is not shaken.

우리의 몸이 약해져도 십자가의 은혜는 약해지지 않습니다.Even when our bodies grow weak, the grace of the cross does not grow weak.

우리의 현실이 어두워도 주님께서 이루신 구원은 취소되지 않습니다.Even when our reality feels dark, the salvation the Lord accomplished is not canceled.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여러분의 영원한 구원은 주님께서 “다 이루었다”고 말씀하신 그 십자가 위에 굳게 세워져 있습니다.Dear beloved church family, your eternal salvation is firmly built on the cross where the Lord declared, “It is finished.”

둘째 우리는 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑 안으로 들어왔습니다 요한복음 17:6, 21

우리 주님은 6절에서 이렇게 기도하십니다.Our Lord prays this in verse 6:

“세상 중에서 내게 주신 사람들에게 내가 아버지의 이름을 나타내었나이다.” (요한복음 17:6)“I have revealed Your name to the people whom You gave Me out of the world.” (John 17:6)

주님은 우리를 “아버지께서 내게 주신 사람들”이라고 부르십니다.The Lord calls us “the people whom the Father gave to Me.”

이 말은 우리의 구원이 우연이 아니라는 뜻입니다. 우리가 어쩌다 하나님께 흘러들어온 사람들이 아니라는 뜻입니다.This means our salvation is not an accident. It means we are not people who somehow drifted into God’s hands by chance.

우리는 아버지께서 아들에게 맡기신 사람들입니다. 성부와 성자의 사랑 안에 붙들린 사람들입니다.We are the people whom the Father entrusted to the Son. We are people held in the love of the Father and the Son.

그런데 21절에 가면 더 놀라운 말씀이 나옵니다.But when we come to verse 21, we hear something even more amazing:

“아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이, 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사.” (요한복음 17:21)“Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us.” (John 17:21)

성부께서 성자 안에 계시고, 성자께서 성부 안에 계십니다.The Father is in the Son, and the Son is in the Father.

그리고 주님은 우리도 “우리 안에 있게 하옵소서”라고 기도하십니다.And the Lord prays that we also may “be in Us.”

이것이 얼마나 놀라운 은혜입니까?What an amazing grace this is.

우리는 단지 정죄만 면한 사람들이 아닙니다.We are not people who have only escaped condemnation.

단지 지옥을 피한 사람들이 아닙니다.We are not people who have only escaped hell.

단지 천국 시민권만 받은 사람들이 아닙니다.We are not people who have only received citizenship in heaven.

우리는 성부와 성자께서 영원 전부터 나누시던 그 사랑의 연합안으로 초대받은 사람들입니다.We are people who have been invited into the loving union that the Father and the Son have shared from eternity.

세상의 사랑은 아무리 깊어도 시간과 죽음의 한계를 피하지 못합니다.The love of this world, no matter how deep it may be, cannot escape the limits of time and death.

그러나 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑은 죽음도 끊을 수 없는 영원한 사랑입니다.But the love of the Triune God is an eternal love that even death cannot break.

로마서 8장은 이것을 “양자의 영”이라고 말합니다.Romans 8 calls this “the Spirit of adoption.”

우리는 종의 영을 받은 것이 아니라, 자녀의 영을 받았습니다.We did not receive the spirit of slaves. We received the Spirit of children.

그래서 하나님을 “아빠 아버지”라고 부를 수 있게 된것입니다.That is why we are now able to call God, “Abba, Father.”

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분,Dear brothers and sisters,

우리는 버려진 사람이 아닙니다.We are not abandoned people.

혼자 남겨진 사람이 아닙니다.We are not people left alone.

타국 땅에서 외롭게 살아온 인생도 하나님 앞에서는 잊혀진 인생이 아닙니다.Even a life lived lonely in a foreign land is not a forgotten life before God.

우리는 삼위일체 하나님의 영원한 사랑 안으로 들어온 하나님의 자녀입니다.We are children of God who have entered into the eternal love of the Triune God.

세상이 우리의 인생을 몰라주어도, 하나님은 우리를 아십니다, 너무 잘 아십니다, 나보다 나를 더 잘아시는 분이 하나님이십니다.Even when the world does not recognize your life, God knows you. He knows you so well. God is the One who knows you better than you know yourself.

사람들이 여러분의 눈물을 다 헤아리지 못해도, 하나님은 여러분의 눈물을 아십니다.Even when people cannot understand all your tears, God knows your tears.

여러분은 하나님의 사랑 안에 있습니다.You are in the love of God.

그런데 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 바로 이 사랑이 우리 마음에 한 가지 질문을 더 깊이 새깁니다.But dear beloved church family, it is this very love that presses one question even more deeply into our hearts.

우리가 정말 이렇게까지 사랑받는 하나님의 자녀라면, 삼위일체 하나님의 영원한 사랑 안으로 들어온 사람이라면, 그렇다면 왜 하나님은 우리를 이 고통의 세상에 그대로 두십니까?

If we are truly children of God who are loved this much, if we are people who have entered into the eternal love of the Triune God, then why does God leave us in this world of suffering? 사랑이 깊을수록 이 질문은 더 무거워집니다. The deeper the love, the heavier this question becomes.

셋째 하나님은 자비로 이 사이의 시간을 두셨습니다 요한복음 17:15

그렇다면 다시 처음 질문으로 돌아가 봅시다.Then let us return to the first question.

우리가 이렇게 구원받았고, 하나님의 자녀가 되었고, 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑 안에 들어왔다면, 왜 주님은 우리를 즉시 천국으로 데려가지 않으십니까?If we have been saved like this, if we have become children of God, and if we have entered into the love of the Triune God, why does the Lord not take us to heaven right away?

아니 우리에게 죄의 결과로 들어온 병과 노화와 죽음과 노동과 해산의 고통을 해결해 주지 않으십니까?Why does He not immediately remove the sickness, aging, death, labor, and pain of childbirth that entered the world because of sin?

그 답이 15절에 있습니다.The answer is found in verse 15.

“내가 비옵는 것은 그들을 세상에서 데려가시기를 위함이 아니요, 오직 악에 빠지지 않게 보전하시기를 위함이니이다.” (요한복음 17:15)“I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15)

주님은 우리를 즉시 세상 밖으로 데려가 달라고 기도하지 않으셨습니다.The Lord did not pray for the Father to take us out of the world immediately.

오히려 세상 안에 남겨 두시되, 악에 빠지지 않게 지켜 달라고 기도하셨습니다.Instead, He prayed that we would remain in the world, but be protected from falling into evil.

왜 그렇습니까?Why is that?

하나님께서 아직 구원하실 영혼들을 오래 참고 기다리고 계시기 때문입니다.It is because God is patiently waiting for the souls He has not yet saved.

만약 주님의 십자가 직후 곧바로 믿는 영혼들을 구원하시고 세상을 심판하셨다면 어떻게 되었겠습니까?What would have happened if, right after the cross of our Lord, God had immediately saved the believers and judged the world?

베드로는 그 순간 구원을 받았겠습니까? 도마는 구원을 얻었겠습니까?Would Peter have been saved at that moment? Would Thomas have received salvation?

얼마나 많은 사람들이 심판을 받았겠으며 아직 주님을 알지 못했던 그 수많은 영혼들은 어떻게 되었겠습니까?How many people would have faced judgment? And what would have happened to all those countless souls who had not yet known the Lord?

우리의 믿지 않는 가족들, 자녀들, 형제들, 이웃들은 어떻게 되었겠습니까?What would have happened to our unbelieving family members, children, brothers and sisters, and neighbors?

하나님은 한 영혼이라도 더 돌아오기를 기다리십니다.God is waiting for even one more soul to return.

한 사람이라도 더 구원하시기 위해 오래 참으십니다.He is patient so that even one more person may be saved.

그러므로 십자가와 재림 사이의 시간은 의미 없는 지연이 아닙니다.Therefore, the time between the cross and the Second Coming is not a meaningless delay.

그 시간은 하나님의 자비의 시간입니다.This time is the time of God’s mercy.

교회의 시간입니다.It is the time of the church.

선교의 시간입니다.It is the time of missions.

우리가 잃어버린 영혼을 전도할 수 있는 시간인 것입니다.It is the time given to us to evangelize lost souls.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리가 아직 이 땅에 남아 있는 이유가 여기에 있습니다.Dear beloved church family, this is why we still remain on this earth.

우리는 버려진 것이 아닙니다.We have not been abandoned.

구원이 실패한 것도 아닙니다.Salvation has not failed.

하나님이 우리를 잊으신 것도 아닙니다.God has not forgotten us.

우리는 하나님의 자비가 아직 펼쳐지고 있는 그 사이의 시간 속에 살고 있습니다.We are living in the in-between time, where the mercy of God is still being unfolded.

그래서 수없이 많은 기도는 이 땅에서 응답을 경험합니다.That is why we experience answers to countless prayers on this earth.

하나님은 우리의 삶을 붙드십니다.God holds our lives.

가정을 지키십니다.He protects our families.

일터를 지키십니다.He watches over our workplaces.

믿음이 무너지지 않도록 보전하십니다.He preserves us so that our faith will not fall apart.

그러나 우리의 늙어가는 몸, 만성 질환, 다가올 죽음의 현실은 아직 완전히 제거되지 않았습니다.But our aging bodies, chronic illnesses, and the reality of the death that is to come have not yet been completely removed.

우리에게 죄의 결과로 들어온 병과 노화와 죽음과 노동과 해산의 고통은 충분한 수의 이방인들이 돌아온후에 사라지게 될 것입니다.The sickness, aging, death, labor, and pain of childbirth that entered because of sin will disappear after the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

그 완전한 회복은 우리 주님의 재림의 날에 드러날 것이라는 것입니다.That complete restoration will be revealed on the day of the Second Coming of our Lord.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

이 천국 복음이 모든 민족에게 증언되기 위하여 온 세상에 전파되리니 그제야 끝이 오리라 (마태복음 24:14)“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

그러므로 아픈 몸을 견디고 계신 성도 여러분, 오래 응답되지 않은 기도를 품고 계신 성도 여러분, 낙심하지 마십시오.Therefore, dear saints who are enduring pain in your bodies, and dear saints who are carrying prayers that have not been answered for a long time, do not lose heart.

그것을 곧바로 “내 믿음이 부족해서 그렇다”고 단정하지 마십시오.Do not quickly conclude, “This is happening because my faith is weak.”

그것을 곧바로 “하나님이 나를 버리셨다”고 해석하지 마십시오.Do not quickly interpret it as, “God has abandoned me.”

우리는 구원의 실패 속에 사는 것이 아닙니다.We are not living in the failure of salvation.

우리는 구원의 실현을 기다리는 시간 속에 살고 있습니다.We are living in the time of waiting for the full realization of salvation.

넷째 걸음 하나님은 우리의 견딤을 그리스도의 십자가 동참으로 여겨 주십니다 요한복음 17:18-19

그렇다면 이 사이의 시간 동안 우리가 겪는 고통은 무엇입니까?Then what is the suffering we go through during this in-between time?

믿지 않는 사람들도 아픕니다.Unbelievers suffer pain.

우리도 아픕니다.We also suffer pain.

믿지 않는 사람들도 늙습니다.Unbelievers grow old.

우리도 늙습니다.We also grow old.

믿지 않는 사람들도 죽음을 마주합니다.Unbelievers face death.

우리도 죽음을 마주합니다.We also face death.

겉으로 보기에는 같아 보입니다.On the outside, it may look the same.

그러나 하나님 앞에서는 다릅니다.But before God, it is different.

18절에서 주님은 자신을 따르는 제자들을 향해 이렇게 말씀하십니다.In verse 18, the Lord says this about the disciples who follow Him:

"아버지께서 나를 세상에 보내신 것 같이 나도 그들을 세상에 보내었고." (요한복음 17:18)“As You sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” (John 17:18)

여기 "같이"라는 한 단어를 붙드십시오.Hold on to this one word: “so.”

헬라어로 카토스입니다.In Greek, it is kathos.

이것은 단순히 비슷하다는 비유가 아닙니다.This does not simply mean that the two are kind of similar.

같은 목적으로 하나님이 주님을 세상에 보내시듯 주님이 믿는 자를 세상에 보내셨다는 뜻입니다.It means that just as God sent the Lord into the world with the same purpose, the Lord also sent believers into the world.

그리스도께서는 본래 받지 않으셔도 될 십자가를, 영광의 자리를 비우시고 자발적으로 짊어지셨습니다.Christ did not have to bear the cross. But He emptied Himself of His place of glory and willingly carried it.

그리고 주님은 바로 그 본질 그대로, 곧 카토스의 그 패턴 그대로 우리를 세상에 보내셨습니다.And in that same pattern, the pattern of kathos, the Lord sent us into the world.

주님께서 아버지께 보냄받아 오신 그 방식 그대로, 이제 성도도 주님께 보냄받아 세상 속에 남겨집니다.Just as the Lord was sent by the Father, now believers are sent by the Lord and left in the world.

그러므로 믿는 자가 이 세상에서 받지 않아도 될 고통과 고난을 당하는 것을, 하나님께서는 귀하게 여겨 주십니다.Therefore, when believers suffer pain and hardship in this world that they would not have had to suffer, God regards it as precious.

왜 그렇습니까?Why?

세상을 구원하시려는 주님의 십자가 사역을 위해, 믿는 자의 구원의 실현이 재림의 날까지 늦춰졌기 때문입니다.Because for the sake of the Lord’s work of saving the world, the full realization of the believer’s salvation has been delayed until the day of the Second Coming.

우리는 본래 주님이 십자가에서 구원을 완성하시는 즉시 천국으로 옮겨져 모든 고통에서 벗어날 수도 있었습니다.Originally, as soon as the Lord completed salvation on the cross, we could have been taken into heaven and freed from all suffering.

그러나 한 영혼이라도 더 구원하시려는 그리스도의 구원의 사역을 위해, 믿는 자들은 이 세상에 남아 고난과 고통을 통과하고 있는 것입니다.But for the saving work of Christ, who desires to save even one more soul, believers remain in this world and pass through suffering and pain.

그래서 성경은 이렇게 말씀 하십니다.That is why the Bible says:

자녀이면 또한 후사 곧 하나님의 후사요 그리스도와 함께한 후사니 우리가 그와 함께 영광을 받기 위하여 고난도 함께 받아야 될 것이니라 (로마서 8:17 )“And if children, then heirs — heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.” (Romans 8:17)

그러므로 우리가 주 예수 그리스도를 향한 믿음을 지키며 이 세상을 견디는 그 시간을, 하나님은 우리가 그리스도의 십자가에 동참하는 것으로 여겨 주십니다.Therefore, when we keep our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and endure this world, God regards that time as our participation in the cross of Christ.

주님이 한 영혼이라도 더 구원하시려고 십자가를 지신 그 사역, 바로 그 사역의 한복판으로 우리의 견딤을 여겨 주시는 것입니다.The Lord carried the cross to save even one more soul. And God regards our endurance right in the middle of that work.

그러나 여기서 반드시 분별해야 할 것이 있습니다.But here, we must understand something very carefully.

주님의 십자가와 우리의 고난은 같은 대속 사역이 아닙니다.The cross of the Lord and our suffering are not the same work of atonement.

주님의 십자가만이 우리의 죄를 속량합니다.Only the cross of the Lord pays for our sins.

우리의 고난은 단 한 방울의 죄도 씻지 못합니다.Our suffering cannot wash away even one drop of sin.

우리의 고난은 구원의 근거가 아닙니다.Our suffering is not the basis of our salvation.

그러나 우리는 그리스도께 속한 자로서, 주님의 길을 따라 세상 속에서 견디고 증언하는 자로 부름받았습니다.But as those who belong to Christ, we have been called to follow the Lord’s path, to endure in the world, and to bear witness to Him.

이것이 성도의 고난입니다.This is the suffering of the saints.

믿음 안에서 견디는 우리의 하루, 약해지는 몸, 눈물의 기도, 자녀를 위한 인내, 그리고 연약한 호흡까지도 하나님은 그리스도의 십자가 동참으로 여겨 주십니다.The days we endure in faith, our weakening bodies, our tearful prayers, our patience for our children, and even our weak breathing — God regards all of these as participation in the cross of Christ.

이것은 우리가 만들어낸 공로가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 자녀로 받아 주시는 은혜입니다.This is not a merit we have created. It is grace that God receives as the life of His children.

여기서 한 가지를 반드시 분별해야 합니다. 우리 자신의 죄, 게으름, 부주의, 악한 선택이 불러온 결과까지 십자가 동참이라고 부를 수는 없습니다.Here, we must also understand one more thing clearly. We cannot call the results of our own sin, laziness, carelessness, or evil choices “participation in the cross.”

그런 것은 회개하고 돌이켜야 할 영역입니다.Those are things we must repent of and turn away from.

성경도 분명히 구분합니다.The Bible also makes this clear distinction.

악행으로 고난받는 것과 그리스도인으로 고난받는 것은 다릅니다.Suffering because of wrongdoing and suffering as a Christian are not the same.

그러나 우리의 잘못이 아님에도 타락한 세상 속에서 겪어야 하는 질병과 연약함, 믿음 때문에 감당하는 오해와 외로움, 늙어감과 죽음의 자리에서 끝까지 주님을 붙드는 견딤은 하나님 앞에서 버려지지 않습니다.But when we suffer sickness and weakness in this fallen world through no fault of our own, when we endure misunderstanding and loneliness because of our faith, and when we hold on to the Lord until the end in aging and even in the face of death, that endurance is not forgotten before God.

하나님은 그 견딤을 그리스도 안에서 귀하게 받아 주십니다.God receives that endurance as precious in Christ.

그러므로 우리의 십자가의 동참은 대속이 아닙니다. 주님과의 연합입니다.Therefore, our participation in the cross is not atonement. It is union with the Lord.

우리의 십자가의 동참은 공로가 아닙니다. 그리스도의 복음의 증언입니다.Our participation in the cross is not our merit. It is a witness to the gospel of Christ.

우리의 십자가의 동참은 우리가 만들어내는 종교적 업적이 아닙니다.Our participation in the cross is not a religious achievement we create.

하나님께서 우리의 삶을 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 자녀의 삶으로 받아 주시는 은혜인 것입니다.It is the grace by which God receives our lives in Christ as the lives of His children.

사랑하는 형제, 자매 여러분,Dear brothers and sisters,

여러분이 평생 흘리신 이민의 땀방울, 부르튼 손, 낡아가는 육신, 새벽의 눈물, 가족을 위한 기도, 주님을 놓지 않으려 했던 모든 견딤은 헛되지 않습니다.The sweat you have shed through a lifetime of immigrant life, your rough and tired hands, your aging bodies, your tears at dawn, your prayers for your family, and all the endurance with which you tried not to let go of the Lord — none of it is meaningless.

하나님께서는 믿음으로 이 모든것을 견뎌낸 우리의 괴로움을 그리스도의 고난을 우리 육신에 채우는 그리스도의 십자가에 동참하는 것으로 여겨주시기 때문입니다.God regards the pain we have endured by faith as participation in the cross of Christ, as sharing in the sufferings of Christ in our bodies.

그러므로 그 모든 것은 여러분이 만들어낸 공로가 아닙니다.Therefore, all of this is not merit that you have created.

하나님께서 그리스도 안에서 그리스도의 십자가에 동참하는 것으로 여겨 주시는 은혜인 것입니다.It is grace — grace by which God, in Christ, counts your life as participation in the cross of Christ.

다섯째 걸음 재림에서 모든 것이 완성됩니다 요한복음 17:24

이제 마지막 걸음입니다. 이 사이의 시간이 끝나는 날, 우리는 어디로 갑니까?Now we come to the final step. When this in-between time comes to an end, where will we go?

24절에서 주님은 이렇게 기도하십니다.In verse 24, the Lord prays this:

“아버지여, 내게 주신 자도 나 있는 곳에 나와 함께 있어, 아버지께서 창세 전부터 나를 사랑하시므로 내게 주신 나의 영광을 그들로 보게 하시기를 원하옵나이다.” (요한복음 17:24)“Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that You have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation

주님의 소원은 분명합니다.The Lord’s desire is clear.

“그들이 나 있는 곳에 나와 함께 있게 하옵소서.”“Let them be with Me where I am.”

“그들이 나의 영광을 보게 하옵소서.”“Let them see My glory.”

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 이것이 우리의 마지막 목적지입니다.Dear beloved church family, this is our final destination.

주님의 재림은 단순히 미래에 일어날 사건이 아닙니다.The Second Coming of the Lord is not simply an event that will happen in the future.

주님의 재림은 우리의 구원이 완전히 드러나는 날입니다.The Second Coming of the Lord is the day when our salvation will be fully revealed.

십자가에서 우리의 구원은 결정적으로 완성되었습니다.At the cross, our salvation was decisively completed.

그러나 주님의 재림의 날 그 구원은 우리의 몸과 온 세계에 완전히 드러날 것입니다.But on the day of the Lord’s Second Coming, that salvation will be fully revealed in our bodies and in the whole world.

고린도전서 15장이 말하듯이, 이 썩을 것이 썩지 아니할 것을 입고, 이 죽을 것이 죽지 아니함을 입을 것입니다.As 1 Corinthians 15 says, this perishable body will put on the imperishable, and this mortal body will put on immortality.

요한계시록 21장이 말하듯이, 다시는 사망이 없고, 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 않을 것입니다.As Revelation 21 says, there will be no more death, no more mourning, no more crying, and no more pain.

우리는 이미 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다.We have already become children of God.

그러나 아직 부활의 몸을 입지는 않았습니다.But we have not yet received our resurrection bodies.

그러나 그날이 옵니다.But that day is coming.

우리의 몸이 새롭게 될 날이 옵니다.The day is coming when our bodies will be made new.

눈물이 그칠 날이 옵니다.The day is coming when our tears will stop.

죽음이 끝나는 날이 옵니다.The day is coming when death will come to an end.

주님의 영광을 얼굴과 얼굴로 보게 될 날이 옵니다.The day is coming when we will see the glory of the Lord face to face.

그리고 그날, 그리스도 안에서 먼저 잠든 사랑하는 이들과 다시 만날 것입니다.And on that day, we will meet again with our loved ones who have fallen asleep first in Christ.

그러므로 죽음은 성도의 마지막 실패가 아닙니다.Therefore, death is not the final failure of the saints.

무덤은 마지막 단어가 아닙니다.The grave is not the final word.

주님 다시 오시는 날, 그리스도 안에서 죽은 자들이 먼저 일어나고, 우리도 그들과 함께 주님을 영접하게 될 것입니다.On the day when the Lord returns, the dead in Christ will rise first, and we also will welcome the Lord together with them.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리는 다시 만납니다.Dear beloved church family, we will meet again.

주 안에서 다시 만납니다.We will meet again in the Lord.

부활의 몸으로 다시 만납니다.We will meet again in resurrection bodies.

그리고 그날 하나님은 우리가 세상을 견뎌온 그 견딤을 결코 잊지 않으십니다.And on that day, God will never forget the endurance with which we have endured this world.

우리가 이미 받은 사랑 때문에 주님을 붙드는 것입지만 하나님은 은혜로 우리의 견딤을 기억하시고 갚아 주십니다.We hold on to the Lord because of the love we have already received, but by grace, God remembers our endurance and rewards it.

그러므로 보상조차 우리의 자랑이 아닙니다. 그것도 은혜입니다.Therefore, even the reward is not something for us to boast about. That, too, is grace.

처음부터 끝까지 하나님의 은혜입니다.From beginning to end, it is the grace of God.

결론 — 모든 것은 사랑에서 시작되어 사랑으로 끝납니다

사랑하는 형제,자매 여러분, 이제 우리는 다섯 가지를 지나왔습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, now we have walked through five truths.

십자가에서 우리의 구원은 결정적으로 이루어졌습니다.At the cross, our salvation was decisively accomplished.

우리는 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑 안으로 들어왔습니다.We have entered into the love of the Triune God.

하나님은 한 영혼이라도 더 구원하시기 위해 이 사이의 시간을 두셨습니다.God has given us this in-between time so that even one more soul may be saved.

그리고 그 시간 동안 세상속에서의 우리의 고난과 견딤을 그리스도의 십자가에 동참하는 것으로 여겨 주십니다.And during this time, God regards our suffering and endurance in this world as participation in the cross of Christ.

그리고 재림의 날, 우리의 구원은 몸과 온 세계의 회복으로 완전히 드러날 것입니다.And on the day of the Second Coming, our salvation will be fully revealed through the restoration of our bodies and the whole world.

그렇습니다.Yes, this is true.

성도는 오직 믿음으로 그리스도께 속한 자가 되었고, 삼위일체 하나님의 사랑 안으로 부름받았으며, 십자가와 재림 사이의 시간 속에서 그리스도의 십자가에 동참하는 은혜를 입은 사람입니다.A saint is someone who, by faith alone, has come to belong to Christ, has been called into the love of the Triune God, and has received the grace of participating in the cross of Christ during the time between the cross and the Second Coming.

그리고 이 모든 것의 가장 깊은 뿌리가 26절에 나옵니다.And the deepest root of all this appears in verse 26.

“내가 아버지의 이름을 그들에게 알게 하였고 또 알게 하리니, 이는 나를 사랑하신 사랑이 그들 안에 있고 나도 그들 안에 있게 하려 함이니이다.” (요한복음 17:26)“I made known to them Your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” (John 17:26)

주님은 마지막에 사랑을 말씀하십니다.At the end, the Lord speaks of love.

성부 하나님께서 성자를 사랑하신 그 사랑. 창세 전부터 있었던 그 사랑.The love that existed before the foundation of the world. The love with which God the Father loved the Son.

죽음도 끊을 수 없는 그 사랑.The love that even death cannot break.

하나님의 그 사랑이 우리 안에 있게 하려 하신다는 것입니다.God desires that this love would be in us.

그러므로 요한복음 17장은 사랑에서 시작하여 사랑으로 끝납니다.Therefore, John chapter 17 begins with love and ends with love.

십자가도 사랑입니다.The cross is love.

성도의 세상에서의 보전도 사랑입니다.The protection of the saints in this world is love.

기다림도 사랑입니다.The waiting is love.

우리의 견딤을 그리스도의 십자가 동참으로 여겨 주시는 것도 사랑입니다.God regarding our endurance as participation in the cross of Christ is also love.

재림의 영광도 사랑입니다.The glory of the Second Coming is love.

그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 살아야 합니까?Then how should we live?

이미 믿음으로 얻은 구원을 확신하지 못해 불안하게 애쓰는 것이 아닙니다.We do not live anxiously, struggling because we are unsure of the salvation we have already received by faith.

고난을 공로로 바꾸려고 애쓰는 것도 아닙니다.We do not struggle to turn our suffering into merit.

거룩을 또 하나의 무거운 짐으로 지는 것도 아닙니다.We do not carry holiness as another heavy burden.

우리가 해야 할 일은 주 예수 그리스도께 참으로 붙어 있는 것입니다.What we must do is truly remain attached to the Lord Jesus Christ.

내 믿음이 정말 주님께 붙어 있는 믿음인지 하나님 앞에서 정직하게 늘 언제나 살피는 것입니다.We must honestly examine ourselves before God, always asking whether our faith is truly attached to the Lord.

그러나 이것은 불안한 자기 검열이 아닙니다.But this is not anxious self-examination.

사랑받는 자녀가 아버지 앞에 서는 것입니다.It is a beloved child standing before the Father.

말씀과 기도와 예배 안에서 주님께 더 깊이 붙어 가는 것입니다.It is growing more deeply attached to the Lord through the Word, prayer, and worship.

그리고 진짜 믿음은 열매를 맺습니다.And true faith bears fruit.

주님께 붙어 있는 사람은 죄를 미워하게 됩니다.A person who remains attached to the Lord begins to hate sin.

주님을 사랑하는 사람은 거룩을 사모하게 됩니다.A person who loves the Lord begins to long for holiness.

그러나 거룩은 구원을 얻기 위한 자격이 아닙니다.But holiness is not the qualification for receiving salvation.

거룩은 믿음의 목적이 아니라 믿음의 열매입니다.Holiness is not the goal of faith, but the fruit of faith.

우리의 목적은 오직 주 예수 그리스도입니다.Our goal is only the Lord Jesus Christ.

우리는 주님을 바라봅니다.We look to the Lord.

주님을 사랑합니다.We love the Lord.

주님께 붙어 있습니다.We remain attached to the Lord.

그러면 주님의 생명이 우리 안에서 열매를 맺습니다.Then the life of the Lord bears fruit within us.

그리고 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 사이의 시간은 혼자 견디는 시간이 아닙니다.And dear brothers and sisters, this in-between time is not a time we endure alone.

하나님은 우리를 외딴 섬으로 부르지 않으셨습니다.God did not call us to be isolated islands.

우리를 한 몸 된 교회로 부르셨습니다.He called us to be one body, the church.

우리는 함께 예배합니다.We worship together.

함께 말씀을 듣습니다.We listen to the Word together.

함께 기도합니다.We pray together.

함께 서로의 짐을 집니다.We carry one another’s burdens together.

그 자리가 우리의 믿음이 확인되고 자라나는 자리입니다.That is the place where our faith is confirmed and grows.

그러므로 남은 평생, 더 이상 세상의 기준 앞에서 여러분의 인생을 증명하려고 피 흘리지 마십시오.Therefore, for the rest of your life, do not exhaust yourselves trying to prove your life by the standards of this world.

자신이 하나님앞에 부족한가 의심하는 정죄감에 사로잡히지 마십시오.Do not be trapped in condemnation, wondering whether you are still lacking before God.

또 오랜기간 응답되지 않은 기도 때문에 하나님께 버림받았다고 생각하지 마십시오.And do not think that God has abandoned you because of prayers that have remained unanswered for a long time.

오직 우리가 확인할 것은 주님께 붙어있는 나의 믿음이 진정한 믿음인지 입니다.The one thing we must examine is this: Is my faith, the faith that is attached to the Lord, truly genuine faith?

거기서부터 시작입니다.That is where we begin.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분,Dear brothers and sisters,

여러분이 이 땅에서 평생 흘려오신 땀과 눈물, 약해지는 몸, 응답되지 않은 기도, 먼저 잠드신 사랑하는 사람들, 그리고 언젠가 마주할 죽음까지도 주님은 알고 계십니다.The Lord knows all the sweat and tears you have poured out throughout your life on this earth. He knows your weakening body, your unanswered prayers, your loved ones who have fallen asleep before you, and even the death you will one day face.

그 모든 것은 주님의 기도 안에서 이미 기억되었습니다.All of it has already been remembered in the prayer of the Lord.

그 사이의 시간 속에서 하나님은 여러분의 견딤을 그리스도의 십자가 동참으로 여겨 주십니다.In this in-between time, God regards your endurance as participation in the cross of Christ.

그리고 재림의 날, 그 모든 견딤은 영광 가운데 드러날 것입니다.And on the day of the Second Coming, all that endurance will be revealed in glory.

여러분은 십자가와 재림 사이를 살아가는 존귀한 하나님의 자녀입니다.You are precious children of God living between the cross and the Second Coming.

그 사이의 모든 시간이 헛되지 않습니다.None of this in-between time is meaningless.

한 방울의 땀도 잊히지 않습니다.Not one drop of sweat is forgotten.

한 방울의 눈물도 버려지지 않습니다.Not one tear is thrown away.

오직 주 예수 그리스도 한 분만 바라보며, 그분을 향한 참된 믿음 안에 거하고, 삼위일체 하나님의 영원한 사랑 안에서 남은 삶을 은혜로 채워 가는 성도들이 되시기를 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 축원합니다.May you become saints who look only to the Lord Jesus Christ, who remain in true faith toward Him, and who fill the rest of your lives with grace in the eternal love of the Triune God. I bless you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
