(Matt 13:3) And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. (13:4) Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, (13:5) but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. (13:6) Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. (13:7) Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (13:8) He who has ears, let him hear.” (13:9)

Dear brothers and sisters, those of you who know farming know this well. No land in this world starts out as good soil. A field, left to itself, is nothing but good-for-nothing ground where no seed can grow — fallow land overgrown with weeds, stones, and thornbushes. However good the seed you scatter on that land, grain never grows there of its own accord. Then when does that land become a field? When the farmer plows it up. When the farmer sets his plow to it, clears out the stones, pulls away the thornbushes, and turns the soil over — only then does that good-for-nothing ground become a field where crops can grow. A field is not born; it is made.

The passage we just read together is precisely a story about fields. Every time we read this parable, one question rises in our hearts: “What kind of soil am I?” The path, the rocky ground, the thorns, or the good soil — we ask ourselves. And behind that question comes a slightly more uncomfortable one: “How on earth did the people who are good soil become good soil?” Are there people simply born as fertile ground, or is one made into good soil? Holding on to that one piece of farmer's common sense I just mentioned, let us enter today's parable.

Then we must first see what the seed of this parable is. The Lord himself interpreted it for us — it is “the word of the kingdom” (Matt 13:19). The word of God proclaimed from outside and sounding in our ears — that is the seed of this parable. Of course, Scripture also says that traces of God are found within us. Romans 1 says that what can be known about God is plain within them (Rom 1:19), and Ecclesiastes 3 says that a longing for eternity dwells in every human heart (Eccl 3:11). There is no one in the world in whom an awareness of God and eternity has not been planted.

But right here the farmer's question arises. If the traces of God are in everyone, and the seed of the word is sown besides, why is fruit so hard to find? If we look honestly, the answer is shocking. It is hard to find anyone who tenderly nurtures that word in his heart, and there is not a single case where that seed reached fruit by the power of human nature alone. Why is the world not full of people who love God? Why did even we ourselves live away from God for so long? The answer lies in the farmer's common sense. It is not for lack of seed. It is because the ground was never plowed. Because the land was never turned over, it was not good soil. It is because we never yielded ourselves so that God the Farmer could till the field of our heart.

Call to mind the first scene of the parable we just read. The sower sows without choosing his field. That is why seed falls on the path, on the rocky ground, and among the thorns. The sowing hand does not choose its field, and the seed, as it is sown, does not choose its person. This is the first grace. God does not discriminate against any heart and pass it by; he sows the seed of the word of the kingdom unsparingly upon every heart.

Yet here one thing must be made clear. Even though man has fallen, the awareness of God and eternity is never completely erased. Here is the proof: even the person who shouts loudest that there is no God — the moment despair crashes over him, the cry “God!” bursts from his lips, just as the pagan sailors on Jonah's ship cried out in the storm, each to his own god (Jonah 1:5). But the sinner does not follow that awareness to the true God. Instead he suppresses the truth in unrighteousness (Rom 1:18) and twists it his own way. Therefore what we need is not to cultivate the religiosity within us, but the seed of the kingdom word sown from outside us. And that seed of the word — how gracious this is — is sown generously on the path, on the rocky ground, and among the thorns alike.

Brothers and sisters, yet the seed being sown and fruit being borne are two entirely different things. The seed came to everyone by grace, but on unplowed ground the birds devour it, the sun scorches it, and the thorns choke it. Therefore bearing fruit is not a problem of the seed but a problem of the soil. And unplowed ground bears none of the fruit the Lord seeks. Even if something does grow, it is only unusable fruit raised by our corrupt heart. What that unplowed ground really is, the Lord's own interpretation now shows us.

Now look closely at the second half of the passage, the interpretation the Lord himself unfolded. The Lord divides the fruitless ground into three.

“그들이 하나님을 시인하나 행위로는 부인하니 가증한 자요 복종하지 아니하는 자요 모든 선한 일을 버리는 자니라”(딛 1:16).First, the path. The word fell on that heart too. But without ever reaching understanding it stayed on the surface, and the evil one snatched it away (Matt 13:19). A hardened path cannot hold the seed, and a hardened heart cannot hold God. The psalm says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Ps 14:1). But look closely at this fool. He is not a philosopher. He did not arrive by some logic at the conclusion that there is no God; rather, because he wants it so — because he wishes there were no God — he drives out the memory and traces of God rising up in his own soul and numbs himself against knowing God. The human heart hardens first on the road of sin, and the denial of God comes afterward. Therefore atheism is not a conclusion but a sinner's wish. And in fact, such people do not even need to say “There is no God.” Anyone who switches off the fear of God's judgment and lives at ease as though God were not watching him is, in effect, already living out the denial “There is no God.” Such people confess God with their lips but deny him with their deeds. The Bible says, “They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work” (Titus 1:16).

Second, the rocky ground. The rocky ground also receives the word “immediately with joy” (Matt 13:20). It responds with heat. But having no root, it endures for a while and then falls away. Leaves have sprouted, but there is no root; there is zeal, but no truth within it. What marks a field as good soil or not is not the temperature of its response to the gospel. Someone protests, “At least I attended church faithfully, I served, I had religious zeal, did I not?” But true faith has an unerring standard — the will of God — and God is not a God whose standard shifts with each person's whim. To shape for myself a god after my own taste and then burn with zeal before it is not worship; it is idolatry — the veneration of a dream my own heart has made. Look at Israel. They had zeal for God, but not according to right knowledge. The apostle Paul says, “Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge” (Rom 10:1-2). Even Aaron's golden calf idol wore the label “a feast to the LORD” (Exod 32:5). Yes — however hot the zeal toward God may be, if there is no truth in it, it is not good soil.

These do hear the word. But the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke it. We must understand this well: it is not that the world blocked the word; it is that their heart chose the world — their heart is so full of the world that God cannot enter. In the very place where our trust ought to be fixed on God, they push God aside, fill the heart with self or with created things, and look for rest there — again, a heart that worships idols. Outwardly they keep up a plausible religious routine. But that veneer of faith is far too weak to restrain the inner man's indulgence in sin. They have the appearance of godliness but deny its power. The Bible says, “For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people” (2 Tim 3:2-5).

Why are all three grounds in this sorry state? Because they are still good-for-nothing ground that has never been fully plowed. Land with stones still lying a hand's breadth beneath the topsoil — however hotly it receives the seed of the word from above, the root has nowhere to go down. Good-for-nothing ground can receive seed, but it cannot raise seed. What is the root of this disease? Fallen human beings, even when they seek God, do not ascend to him; instead they drag God down to where they are — fashioning for themselves a manageable, comfortable god: easy on their eyes, easy to petition, quick to grant whatever they ask. The Bible says, “These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver! The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” (Ps 50:21-23). In the end one loves not God, but a shadow of God molded by one's own heart.

But dear brothers and sisters, here we must go one step deeper. The Lord's parable shows why the fields fail to bear fruit — they are robbed by the enemy, their sprouts wither, their life is choked. But the parable does not tell us what the inner heart of those fields is like. That part the epistles explain. The Bible says, “The mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot” (Rom 8:7). What lies at the bottom of the unplowed heart-field is not indifference to the truth but hatred and hostility toward God. The corrupt human heart knows it cannot escape God, and so it fears him; and because it fears him, it hates him. Not the child's fear that flows from awe of God's majesty, but the slave's fear wrung out by the dread of looming judgment — as even the demons believe, and shudder (Jas 2:19). Outwardly making a show of receiving the seed of truth, while inwardly not wanting that seed to grow up and God to reign as king over me — that is the true condition of unplowed, good-for-nothing ground. How deep, then, this problem runs! A little raking of the surface will not solve it. The field of our heart must be plowed up entirely. But who can plow it? That is precisely the news the gospel brings.

“대답하여 이르시되 천국의 비밀을 아는 것이 너희에게는 허락되었으나 그들에게는 아니되었나니”(마 13:11).The Bible says, “As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty” (Matt 13:23). “And he answered them, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given’” (Matt 13:11).

Then where does the last scene of the parable — the good soil bearing a hundredfold — come from? First, see the mark of the good soil in the Lord's interpretation: it is not “the one who receives the word with joy” but “the one who hears the word and understands it” who is the good soil. And the Lord himself revealed where that understanding comes from. It is not something we achieved; it was “given” from outside, from God. It is a gift of grace — God granting us to know. Therefore being good soil is not an achievement but a gift of God's grace.

The farmer's common sense gives the same answer as the Lord's word. There is only one way good-for-nothing ground becomes a field — the farmer plows it up. The farmer must come with his plow and turn the land over; the land cannot plow itself. Scripture points to the same place. True godliness is poured into the believer's breast. “I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart” (Jer 24:7). Yes — coming to understand the truth, coming to know what kind of God he is, was poured into us as a gift of grace. This understanding did not spring up from within me; it was poured out from outside, from heaven above. The one who plows up the field of our heart and clears out its stones is the Lord, and the one who makes truth grow in that heart-field is likewise the Lord.

First, look at the Lord who clears out the stones. Ezekiel shows us the Lord at this very plowing. The Bible says, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezek 36:26). Who picks the stones out of the heart's field? God does. Look at Lydia of Philippi. The Bible says, “One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul” (Acts 16:14). Lydia did not open her own heart. The Lord opened it. Yes — this is the moment the plow entered the fallow ground. This is the very scene where good-for-nothing ground is born again as a field that truly bears fruit.

And this new heart does not come free. For the Lord's plow to pass through the field of my heart, the cross first passed through the Lord's body. By his piercing, our hardened hearts were broken open.

And now see the one who makes this seed grow. Paul draws the conclusion: “What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Cor 3:5-7). The same is true of our coming to love God. If the love for the Lord in my heart has at last ripened into true love, it is not because my soil was good, but because the Lord plowed up my soil. It is just as I confessed some years ago when we shared the parable of the hidden treasure — it was not an insight I earned by my own effort; Almighty God opened my soul, and so I discovered the treasure. The gospel that had sounded like a foreign language sprang up alive under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. The word stood up, and I fell down before the word — that was the very moment the Lord's plow was passing through the ground of my heart.

Dear brothers and sisters, now we return to the first question. Is good soil something one is born with? No. No land in this world starts out as fruitful, good soil. Left alone, it is only good-for-nothing ground where no seed can grow. Only when this land is plowed up does it become good soil. The sowing hand sowed without choosing its field; yet the rocky ground's joy was momentary, and the truth could not take root; yet the one who cleared the stones from that field, and the one who made the fruit grow thirtyfold and a hundredfold, was the Lord. We did not bear fruit because we were fertile ground; the Lord turned over our fallow ground, and so fruit was borne at last. Our lives were changed.

And this truth gives us two graces.

First, humility. The fruit-bearing believer has nothing to boast of. The seed is God's, the plowing was God's, and the growth was God's — so the hundredfold harvest is grace's portion from beginning to end. Why have we looked so deeply today into the corruption of the human heart? Not to drive us to despair, but to see that nothing but grace will do. The deeper the soul's disease, the greater the Lord's grace. Even the love with which I love the Lord is the echo of the love he first poured out on me.

Second, hope. As I have told you before, our Lord never went looking only for places where ministry would be easy. He is the one who braved the storm and crossed the lake to reach the rocky ground of one single man possessed by a legion of demons. Though my heart today looks like rocky ground, and my child's heart like the hard path, and the heart of the person I pray for like a patch of thorns — there is no reason to despair. In that person, too, the memory of God has not been erased. Good-for-nothing ground is not abandoned ground, for no hardened land is impossible before the Lord's plow. The Lord can sow the word again and open the hardened heart. And turning fallow ground into good soil — that is what the Lord has been doing for two thousand years. Our part is not to pass judgment on the soil, but to entrust that land to the Lord who sows the seed and plows the field — to offer ourselves up wholly to him.

The heart the Lord showed us in Gethsemane — “Not my will, but your will be done” — that is the language of a plowed-up field. Of course, the Lord never had a hardened heart that needed plowing. He accomplished the perfect obedience we never rendered, and that obedience became our righteousness. But with that prayer the Lord set us an example. We are to seek not my will but the will of the Father. We are to live not the life I want but the life God intends. When we do, the working of eternal life rises within us, our lives are changed, and the joy of walking with God overflows. Fruit is borne. And now the Holy Spirit brings forth, in our plowed-up heart-field, the fruit of Christlike obedience — obedience flowing not from a slave's fear but from a child's love; and it is God who accomplishes it, placing the desire within us and enabling us to act. The Bible says, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Phil 2:13). Yes — what our good God desires is that we receive the good news and bear the fruit of life. He wants us to grasp this truth and make God's will our own desire, and so he leads us on. And those who carry this desire live even on this earth tasting God's faithfulness and the joy of life — that eternal joy.

Before today's word, have you seen that your heart is hard, shallow, and divided? Do not try to fix it yourself. But do not back away either. “Lord, plow up the field of my heart” — the very moment you pray this prayer is the moment the seed of the kingdom word is being sown. The Lord who plowed up our lives and made them good soil is, today too, clearing out the stones that remain in us. May you and I entrust our hearts to that hand — I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ.
