사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분.Dear brothers and sisters.

오늘 본문은 한 절입니다. 그런데 이 한 절이 세 가지를 말씀합니다.Today's text is a single verse. And yet this one verse says three things.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라" (마 13:44)“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matt 13:44)

첫째, 감추어 두셨습니다. 무엇을 감추셨습니까. 보화입니다.First, something was hidden. What was hidden? Treasure.

둘째, 발견했습니다. 어디서 발견했습니까. 밭에서입니다.Second, it was found. Where was it found? In a field.

셋째, 다 팔아 그 밭을 샀습니다. 무엇을 팔았습니까. 자기의 소유를 다 팔았습니다.Third, he sold everything and bought that field. What did he sell? He sold all that he had.

그러므로 오늘 우리는 이 세 가지를 열어 보려 합니다. 그 보화가 무엇인가. 그 밭이 어디인가. 그리고 우리는 무엇을 팔아 무엇을 샀는가.So today we will open up these three things. What is that treasure? Where is that field? And what have we sold, and what have we bought?

한 사람이 남의 밭에서 품을 팔고 있었습니다. 그런데 밭을 갈던 쟁기 끝에 무언가가 걸립니다. 큰 돌인가 싶어 파 보니 커다란 항아리가 나왔습니다. 그 속을 살펴보니 엄청난 보화가 담겨 있었습니다.A man was working for wages in someone else's field. As he plowed, the tip of his plow caught on something. Thinking it was a large stone, he dug — and out came a great jar. He looked inside, and it was filled with an enormous treasure.

그는 그것을 도로 잘 묻어 둡니다. 왜 그랬겠습니까. 그 밭이 아직 자기 밭이 아니었기 때문입니다. 그리고 그 길로 일어나 자기가 가진 모든 것을 팔아 그 밭을 사 버립니다. 보화를 얻기 위해서인 것입니다.He carefully buries it again. Why would he do that? Because the field was not yet his own. And then he gets up, goes and sells everything he has, and buys that field — all in order to gain the treasure.

생각해 보십시오.Think about it.

누가 그 보화를 얻었습니까? 그 밭에 보화가 있다는 것을 깨달은 사람입니다.Who gained that treasure? The man who realized there was treasure in that field.

그러면 누가 그 보화를 잃었습니까? 밭이 없던 사람입니까? 아닙니다. 밭을 가지고 있던 사람입니다. 자기 손에 보화를 쥐고 있으면서 쥐고 있는 줄을 몰랐습니다. 파 보지 않았습니다. 그래서 잃은 것입니다.Then who lost that treasure? The one who had no field? No. The one who owned the field. He held the treasure in his own hands and never knew he was holding it. He never dug. And so he lost it.

여러분, 오늘 이 두 사람 가운데 우리는 누구입니까.Which of these two men are we today?

우리는 인생을 참으로 열심히 살아왔습니다. 그런데 무엇을 위해 그렇게 살아왔습니까?We have lived our lives with such diligence. But what have we been living for?

고향 땅을 두고 왔습니다.We left our homeland behind.

부모 형제와 친척을 한국에 두고 왔습니다.We left our parents, our brothers and sisters, our relatives back in Korea.

말 한마디 통하지 않는 낯선 땅에 와서, 쉬는 날도 없이 살았습니다.We came to a strange land where not one word we spoke was understood, and we lived without a single day off.

어떤 분은 이름까지 바꾸고 사셨습니다.Some of you even changed your names to live here.

그렇게 살면서 우리가 그토록 원하던 것은 무엇이었습니까. 그리고 지금 그것을 얻으셨습니까.Living that way, what was it we wanted so badly? And have you obtained it now?

지금 우리 손에 보화가 들려 있습니까?Is there treasure in our hands right now?

대지 1 · 보화 — 무엇을 감추셨습니까

먼저 첫째입니다. 본문은 무엇을 감추셨다고 말합니까. 보화입니다.First, then. What does the text say was hidden? Treasure.

그렇다면 그 보화가 무엇입니까.So what is that treasure?

천국입니다. 하나님의 나라 천국을 보화라고 하십니다.It is the kingdom of heaven. The Lord calls the kingdom of God — heaven itself — the treasure.

천국은 우리가 주님과 영원히 살아갈 하나님의 왕국입니다. 그런데 여러분, 나라에는 왕이 계십니다. 그러므로 천국을 얻는다는 것은 왕을 모신다는 것입니다.The kingdom of heaven is God's kingdom, where we will live with the Lord forever. But a kingdom has a King. Therefore to gain the kingdom of heaven is to receive the King.

그러면 왕을 모신다는 것이 무엇입니까. 왕이 계신 줄 아는 것입니까. 왕을 왕이라고 부르는 것입니까. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.Then what does it mean to receive the King? Is it knowing that a King exists? Is it calling the King by the name of King? The Bible says:

"나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라 그 날에 많은 사람이 나더러 이르되 주여 주여 우리가 주의 이름으로 선지자 노릇 하며 주의 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아 내며 주의 이름으로 많은 권능을 행하지 아니하였나이까 하리니 그 때에 내가 그들에게 밝히 말하되 내가 너희를 도무지 알지 못하니 불법을 행하는 자들아 내게서 떠나가라 하리라" (마 7:21-23)“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” (Matt 7:21-23)

그들은 주여 주여 불렀습니다. 왕이라 불렀습니다. 주의 이름으로 일까지 했습니다. 그런데 천국에 들어가지 못합니다. 왜 그렇습니까. 내가 너희를 도무지 알지 못하니.They called out, “Lord, Lord.” They called him King. They even did works in his name. Yet they do not enter the kingdom of heaven. Why? “I never knew you.”

여러분, 주님께서 그 사람들의 이름을 모르셨겠습니까. 다 아셨습니다. 그러니 이 "안다"는 정보나 지식의 문제가 아닌 것입니다. 이것은 우리가 아버지와 아들 사이의 그 관계 안에 있느냐 없느냐의 문제인 것입니다. 하나님을, 주님을, 우리의 아버지를 알듯이 사랑하며 알고 있느냐의 문제인 것입니다.Do you suppose the Lord did not know their names? He knew them all. So this “knowing” is not a matter of information or data. It is a matter of whether we stand inside that relationship between the Father and the Son. It is a matter of whether we know God, the Lord, our Father — knowing him the way we know and love a father.

오늘 본문의 한 사람은 천국을 얻었습니다. 그런데 이 사람들은 천국 문 앞에서 돌아섰습니다. 무엇이 둘을 갈랐습니까. 앎입니다. 보화가 있다는 것을 안 사람과 주님을 알고 주님의 뜻대로 행한 사람은 천국에 들어가고, 그렇지 못한 사람들 곧 주님을 몰랐던 사람들은 천국에 들어갈 수 없었습니다.The one man in today's text gained the kingdom. But these people were turned away at its door. What separated the two? Knowing. The one who knew there was treasure, the one who knew the Lord and did the Lord's will — he enters the kingdom. Those who did not, those who never knew the Lord, could not enter.

그렇습니다. 왕을 모신다는 것은 왕을 아는 것입니다.Yes — to receive the King is to know the King.

그렇다면 성경은 그 앎을 무엇이라 부릅니까. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.Then what does the Bible call that knowing? The Bible says:

"영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다" (요 17:3)“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)

영생이라 부릅니다. 우리 주님께서 친히 그렇게 정의하신 것입니다.It calls it eternal life. Our Lord himself defined it that way.

그런데 영생이 오래 사는 것만 뜻합니까? 그렇게만 말하면 안 아프고 오래 사는 것이 복이 되고, 우리 믿음은 건강 보험이 되고 맙니다. 그러면 지식으로 아는 것이 영생입니까? 그렇게만 말하면 영생이 머릿속의 지식이 되어 버립니다. 우리 하나님은 그렇게 간단하신 분이 아니십니다.But does eternal life mean only living a long time? If that were all, then being free of illness and living long would be the blessing, and our faith would end up as health insurance. Then is eternal life knowing in the sense of information? If that were all, eternal life would end up as knowledge inside our heads. Our God is not so small a God as that.

여기 "아는 것"은 한 번 알고 끝나는 말이 아니라 계속해서 하나님을 알아 가는 것입니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.The “knowing” here is not something you finish once and are done with; it is going on and on coming to know God. The Bible says:

"그러므로 우리가 여호와를 알자 힘써 여호와를 알자 그의 나타나심은 새벽 빛 같이 어김없나니 비와 같이, 땅을 적시는 늦은 비와 같이 우리에게 임하시리라 하니라" (호 6:3)“Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hos 6:3)

알자, 그리고 힘써 알자. 이미 아는 백성에게 다시 알자고 하십니다. 새벽 빛은 한순간에 오지 않습니다. 비는 한 번 오고 끝나지 않습니다. 아는 것은 도착점이 아니라 길인 것입니다.Let us know — and let us press on to know. He says “let us know” to a people who already know. The dawn does not arrive in a single instant. The rain does not fall once and finish. Knowing is not a destination but a road.

그러므로 영원하신 하나님을 영원토록 알아 가야 하기 때문에, 우리가 영원히 살게 되는 것입니다. 하나님이 다 알아지는 분이시라면 하나님을 다 알고 나서 우리에게 더 살 이유가 없습니다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 다 알아질 수 없는 분입니다. 그래서 영생인 것입니다.And so, because the eternal God must be known throughout eternity, we come to live forever. If God could be fully known, then once we had fully known him there would be no reason left for us to live. But our God cannot be exhausted. That is why it is eternal life.

그렇습니다. 이 보화는 평생 파도 다 못 파는 보화인 것입니다.Yes — this is a treasure you could dig at your whole life long and never dig out.

그런데 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 조금 전에 제가 물었습니다. 우리는 무엇을 위해 그렇게 살아왔습니까. 세상은 그 답을 셋으로 정해 주었습니다. 그러나 성경은 그 셋을 뒤집으십니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.But dear brothers and sisters, a moment ago I asked: what have we been living for? The world has settled on three answers for us. But the Bible overturns all three. The Bible says:

"여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 지혜로운 자는 그의 지혜를 자랑하지 말라 용사는 그의 용맹을 자랑하지 말라 부자는 그의 부함을 자랑하지 말라 자랑하는 자는 이것으로 자랑할지니 곧 명철하여 나를 아는 것과 나 여호와는 사랑과 정의와 공의를 땅에 행하는 자인 줄 깨닫는 것이라 나는 이 일을 기뻐하노라 여호와의 말씀이니라" (렘 9:23-24)“Thus says the LORD: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.’” (Jer 9:23-24)

지혜와 힘과 재물. 우리가 이 땅에서 붙들고 달려온 그 세 가지를 자랑의 자리에서 끌어내리시고, 빈자리에 하나만 남기십니다. 나를 아는 것 곧 하나님을 아는 것이 그것입니다. 그리고 무엇이라 하십니까. 나는 이 일을 기뻐하노라. 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일이 바로 우리가 하나님을 아는 것인 것입니다.Wisdom, might, and riches. He pulls down from the place of boasting the very three things we have clung to and chased in this world, and in the empty place he leaves only one: knowing me — that is, knowing God. And what does he say then? “For in these things I delight.” What God delights in is precisely this: that we know him.

시편 73편을 쓴 사람은 악인이 잘되는 것을 보고 넘어질 뻔했던 사람입니다. 그가 마지막에 이렇게 고백합니다.The man who wrote Psalm 73 was a man who almost stumbled at the sight of the wicked prospering. At the end he confesses this:

"하늘에서는 주 외에 누가 내게 있으리요 땅에서는 주 밖에 내가 사모할 이 없나이다 내 육체와 마음은 쇠약하나 하나님은 내 마음의 반석이시요 영원한 분깃이시라" (시 73:25-26)“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Ps 73:25-26)

여기 '분깃'이라는 말을 놓치지 마십시오. 이스라엘이 땅을 나눌 때 레위 지파만 땅을 받지 못했습니다. 대신 하나님께서 내가 네 분깃이라 하셨습니다. 그들은 왕국의 땅을 받은 것이 아니라 왕 되시는 하나님을 받은 것입니다. 그런데 성경은 그것이 더 나은 몫이요 복이라고 말합니다.Do not miss the word “portion” here. When Israel divided the land, the tribe of Levi alone received no land. Instead God said, “I am your portion.” They did not receive the kingdom's land; they received God, who is the King. And the Bible says that this was the better share, the blessing.

육체와 마음은 쇠약하다고 했습니다. 무릎이 아프고 눈이 침침해집니다. 그런데 바로 그 자리에서 무엇이라 합니까. '영원한 분깃이시라.' 세상이 주는 복은 가뭄이 오면 마르는 강물입니다. 그러나 하나님은 영원히 마르지 않는 생명의 샘이신 것입니다.He says the flesh and the heart fail. The knees ache; the eyes grow dim. And in that very place, what does he say? “My portion forever.” The blessings the world gives are a river that dries up when the drought comes. But God is the fountain of life that never runs dry.

그리고 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 오늘 제가 가장 드리고 싶은 말씀이 여기 있습니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.And dear brothers and sisters, here is what I most want to say to you today. The Bible says:

"이제는 너희가 하나님을 알 뿐 아니라 더욱이 하나님이 아신 바 되었거늘 어찌하여 다시 약하고 천박한 초등학문으로 돌아가서 다시 그들에게 종 노릇 하려 하느냐" (갈 4:9)“But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” (Gal 4:9)

내가 하나님을 아는 것도 복입니다. 그러나 성경은 한 걸음 더 나아갑니다. 하나님이 나를 아신다는 것입니다.That I know God is itself a blessing. But the Bible goes one step further: God knows me.

이름을 바꾸고 사셨습니까. 새벽에 나가 밤에 들어오는 세월을 몇십 년 사셨는데 아무도 알아 주지 않았습니까. 그렇습니다. 하지만 그 힘든 세월을 '하나님이 세고 계셨습니다.' 그렇다면 그것이야말로 참된 복인 것입니다.Did you live under a changed name? Did you spend decades leaving before dawn and coming home at night with no one taking any notice? Yes. But all those hard years — God was counting them. And that, surely, is the true blessing.

그리고 이 말씀의 뒷부분을 보십시오. 다시 '종 노릇' 하려 하느냐고 물으십니다. 사람은 누구나 무엇인가를 섬기며 삽니다. 문제는 우리가 누군가를 섬기느냐 마느냐가 아닙니다. '과연 누구를 왕으로 모시고 사느냐'인 것입니다.And look at the latter half of this verse. He asks whether we want to be slaves once more. Every human being lives serving something. The question is not whether we serve someone or not. The question is: whom do we actually receive as King?

이것이 감추어 두신 보화입니다. 나를 아시는 왕, 그 왕을 영원토록 알아 가는 것. 이것이 천국인 것입니다.This is the treasure God hid. The King who knows me — and coming to know that King throughout eternity. This is the kingdom of heaven.

그렇다면 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그 왕은 지금 어디 계십니까. 하나님은 이 보화를 어디에 두셨습니까.Then, dear brothers and sisters, where is that King now? Where did God put this treasure?

대지 2 · 밭 — 어디서 발견했습니까

성경은 말씀 하십니다. 하나님은 밭에 이 보화를 감추어 두셨다고 하십니다.The Bible says that God hid this treasure in a field.

그런데 여기에 이상한 것이 하나 있습니다. 본문은 분명 이 보화가 감추어졌다고 했습니다. 그런데 곧이어 누군가가 이 보화를 '발견했다'고 합니다. 감추셨는데 찾아진 것입니다.But there is something strange here. The text clearly says the treasure was hidden. And yet immediately it says that someone found it. It was hidden — and yet it was found.

여러분, 이것이 무슨 뜻입니까. 그것은 하나님께서 이 보화를 '찾지 못하게 감추신 것이 아니라, 찾는 자가 발견하도록 감추셨다는 뜻입니다.' 그래서 사람이 날마다 밟고 일하는 밭에 그 보화를 두신 것입니다.What does this mean? It means that God did not hide this treasure so that it could not be found — he hid it so that the one who seeks would find it. That is why he placed the treasure in a field that people walk on and work in every single day.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"이는 하나님을 알 만한 것이 그들 속에 보임이라 하나님께서 이를 그들에게 보이셨느니라" (롬 1:19)“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” (Rom 1:19)

'하나님을 알 만한 것이 그들 속에' 보인다고 하셨습니다. 그래서 우리 안에 한 번 두신 것입니다. 그리고 이어서 말씀 하십니다.What can be known about God is plain within them, he says. So he placed it inside us once. And then he goes on:

"창세로부터 그의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이 그가 만드신 만물에 분명히 보여 알려졌나니 그러므로 그들이 핑계하지 못할지니라" (롬 1:20)“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Rom 1:20)

'만드신 만물에' 하나님의 능력과 신성이 보인다고 하셨습니다. 밖에 한 번 더 두신 것입니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님은 두 번이나 우리에게 하나님을 알 수 있는 기회를 두신 것입니다.God's power and divine nature are seen in the things that have been made, he says. So he placed it outside us as well — a second time. Yes: God gave us the opportunity to know him not once but twice.

왜 두 번이나 두셨겠습니까. 하나님께서 자신을 알리실 때, 구원의 길을 알게 하실 때 가장 먼저 생각하신 것이 무엇이었겠습니까. 이 구원에서 '누가 빠질까,' 걱정하시며 한 사람도 빠지지 않게 하시려고 하나님을 알 수 있는 기회를 우리의 안과 밖에 두신 것입니다.Why twice? When God made himself known, when he made known the way of salvation, what was the first thing on his mind? He was concerned about who might be left out of this salvation. So that not one person would be left out, he placed the opportunity to know him both inside us and outside us.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그의 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다 날은 날에게 말하고 밤은 밤에게 지식을 전하니 언어도 없고 말씀도 없으며 들리는 소리도 없으나 그의 소리가 온 땅에 통하고 그의 말씀이 세상 끝까지 이르도다" (시 19:1-4)“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” (Ps 19:1-4)

날은 날에게 말하고 밤은 밤에게 지식을 전한다고 했습니다. 하나님의 영광을 선포하는, 하루도 쉬지 않는 설교인 것입니다. 언어가 없는데 온 땅에 통한다고 하십니다. 가장 못 배운 농부도 눈을 뜨는 순간 보지 않을 수 없게 하신 것입니다. 하나님의 계시에는 학교가 필요 없는 것입니다.Day pours out speech to day, and night reveals knowledge to night. It is a sermon that declares the glory of God and never takes a day off. There is no language, and yet it goes out through all the earth. God made it so that even the least educated farmer cannot help but see it the moment he opens his eyes. God's revelation requires no schooling.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 말이 안 통해서, 못 배워서, 나이가 많다고, 서류가 없다고 줄 밖으로 쫓겨나 보셨습니까. 이 땅에는 그런 문턱이 참으로 많습니다. 그러나 하나님의 계시에는 그 문턱이 없습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, have you ever been pushed out of the line because you could not speak the language, because you had little schooling, because you were too old, because you did not have the papers? This land has so many such thresholds. But God's revelation has no threshold at all.

다만 한 가지는 기억하십시오. 하늘이 아름답다고 감탄하는 것과, 그 하늘을 지으신 분을 예배하는 것은 다른 일입니다. 밭이 보화는 아닌 것입니다. 밭을 밟고 다닌다고 보화가 손에 들어오지 않습니다. 쟁기를 대야 합니다. 그것도 제대로 대야 하는 것입니다.Only remember one thing. Marveling that the sky is beautiful and worshiping the One who made that sky are two different things. The field is not the treasure. Walking about on the field does not put the treasure in your hand. You have to set a plow to it — and set it rightly.

대지 3 · 팔고 삼 — 무엇을 팔았습니까

성경은 그가 자기의 모든 소유를 다 팔아 보화가 숨겨져 있는 밭을 샀다고 하십니다.The Bible says he sold all that he had and bought the field where the treasure was hidden.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 우리도 다 팔았습니다. 고향을 팔았고 언어를 팔았고 이름까지 팔았습니다. 그리고 오늘 주님께 경배드리는 자리까지 오셨습니다. 여러분은 이미 그 밭을 받으신 분들입니다.Dear brothers and sisters, we too have sold everything. We sold our hometown, we sold our language, we even sold our names. And you have come all the way to this place of worship before the Lord today. You are people who have already received that field.

그러면 제가 서론에서 드린 질문으로 돌아가 보겠습니다. 지금 우리 손에 보화가 들려 있습니까?So let me return to the question I asked in the introduction. Is there treasure in our hands right now?

이 질문에 답을 드리기 전에, 먼저 보아야 할 것이 있습니다. 우리보다 먼저 보화가 묻힌 밭을 하나님께 받은 사람들이 있었습니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.Before I answer that question, there is something we must look at first. There were people who received from God, before us, the field with the treasure buried in it. The Bible says:

"범사에 많으니 우선은 그들이 하나님의 말씀을 맡았음이니라" (롬 3:2)“Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.” (Rom 3:2)

말씀은 그들이 하나님의 말씀을 맡았다고 하십니다. 율법과 선지자와 약속이 그들에게 있었습니다. 그리고 그 밭 한가운데 보화가 묻혀 있었습니다. 그 모든 말씀이 가리키던 왕, 예수 그리스도이십니다.The Word says they were entrusted with the oracles of God. The law, the prophets, and the promises were theirs. And in the very middle of that field the treasure lay buried — the King to whom all those words pointed, Jesus Christ.

그렇습니다. 이들은 바로 이스라엘 민족입니다. 그런데 그들이 밭을 갈지 않았습니까. 아닙니다. 누구보다 열심히 갈았습니다. 성경도 이에 대하여 말씀 하십니다.Yes — these are the people of Israel. But did they fail to plow the field? No. They plowed harder than anyone. And the Bible speaks about this too:

"내가 증언하노니 그들이 하나님께 열심이 있으나 올바른 지식을 따른 것이 아니니라 하나님의 의를 모르고 자기 의를 세우려고 힘써 하나님의 의에 복종하지 아니하였느니라" (롬 10:2-3)“For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.” (Rom 10:2-3)

열심이 있었습니다. 그런데 무엇을 위해 힘썼습니까. 자기 의를 세우려고 힘썼습니다. 밭은 갈았는데 찾는 것이 달랐습니다. 그들의 열심은 하나님의 보화를 찾는 쟁기질이 아니라 자기 의를 얻으려는 쟁기질이었던 것입니다.They had zeal. But what did they strive for? They strove to establish their own righteousness. They plowed the field, but what they were looking for was something else. Their zeal was not plowing in search of God's treasure but plowing to obtain their own righteousness.

여러분, 사람이란 그렇습니다. 하나님께 받은 것을 자기 것이라 하는 순간, 주신 분이 눈에 보이지 않게 됩니다. 기도도 하고 말씀도 읽고 똑같이 경건 생활을 하지만 그 마음이 하나님이 아니라 자신을 높이는 데만 집중하는 것입니다.This is how we are. The moment we call what we received from God our own, the Giver disappears from our sight. We still pray, we still read the Word, we keep up the same devotional life — but the heart is fixed on exalting ourselves rather than God.

그래서 이스라엘은 어떻게 되었습니까. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.So what became of Israel? The Bible says:

"어찌 그러하냐 이는 그들이 믿음을 의지하지 않고 행위를 의지함이라 부딪칠 돌에 부딪쳤느니라 기록된 바 보라 내가 걸림돌과 거치는 바위를 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 함과 같으니라" (롬 9:32-33)“Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’” (Rom 9:32-33)

그렇습니다. '부딪칠 돌에 부딪쳤느니라.' 성경이 증거하시는 것입니다.Yes — “they have stumbled over the stumbling stone.” This is what Scripture testifies.

여러분, 오늘 아침 그 사람을 기억하십니까. 쟁기 끝에 무언가가 걸렸을 때 그는 큰 돌인가 싶어 파 보았습니다. 그랬더니 보화였습니다. 그는 기쁨에 가진 모든 것을 팔아 그 밭을 사, 영원히 그 보물을 소유하게 된 것입니다.Do you remember the man from this morning's story? When the tip of his plow caught on something, he thought it was a large stone and dug it up. And it turned out to be treasure. In his joy he sold all he had and bought that field, and so came to possess that treasure forever.

그런데 이 사람들은 같은 돌에 걸려서 넘어졌습니다. 쟁기 끝에 그리스도가 걸렸는데, 보화라고 기뻐하지 않고 거치는 돌이라고 치워 버린 것입니다. 같은 돌입니다. 한 사람은 파서 보화를 얻었고, 한 사람은 걸려 넘어졌습니다.But these people stumbled over the same stone. Christ caught on the tip of their plow, and instead of rejoicing that it was treasure, they cleared him away as a rock of offense. It is the same stone. One man dug and gained the treasure; another tripped and fell.

그래서 주님께서 무엇이라 하셨습니까.So what did the Lord say?

"그러므로 내가 너희에게 이르노니 하나님의 나라를 너희는 빼앗기고 그 나라의 열매 맺는 백성이 받으리라" (마 21:43)“Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.” (Matt 21:43)

그래서 아무 밭도 없던 사람들, 아무것도 찾지 않던 이방인들이 복음을 듣고 그 보화를 발견했습니다. 그것이 바로 예수 그리스도를 믿고 하나님의 자녀들이 된 우리입니다.And so people who had no field at all, Gentiles who were not looking for anything, heard the gospel and found that treasure. That is us — we who believed in Jesus Christ and became children of God.

그러나 우리가 빼앗은 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 주신 것입니다. 우리는 원래 주인이 아니었습니다. 은혜로 접붙임을 받은 사람들인 것입니다.But we did not seize it. God gave it. We were never the original owners. We are people who were grafted in by grace.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 이야기를 남의 이야기로만 듣지 않으셨으면 합니다. 저는 이 말씀 앞에서 저 자신을 봅니다.Dear brothers and sisters, I hope you will not hear this story as somebody else's story. Standing before this word, I see myself.

우리도 이제는 밭을 맡은 사람들입니다. 성경이 우리 손에 있습니다. 침례를 받았습니다. 주일마다 이 자리에 나옵니다. 그리고 참으로 열심히 살았습니다. 우리 교회에 게으르게 사신 분은 한 분도 안 계십니다.We too are now people entrusted with the field. The Bible is in our hands. We have been baptized. We come to this place every Lord's Day. And we have lived with real diligence. There is not one person in our church who has lived lazily.

다만 이 한 가지만 스스로에게 물어보시기 바랍니다.I only ask you to put this one question to yourself.

나의 그 열심은 과연 무엇을 캐려는 열심이었습니까.That diligence of mine — what was it digging for?

밭은 갈았는데 자녀 잘되는 것을 캐려고 갈지는 않았습니까. 건강을 캐려고, 사업이 풀리기를 바라며 갈지는 않았습니까. 그것이 나쁘다는 말씀이 아닙니다. 다만 그 밭에 그보다 더 큰 것이 묻혀 있는데, 우리가 그것을 지나쳐 온 것은 아닌지 여쭈어보는 것입니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.We plowed the field — but were we plowing to dig up our children's success? To dig up health, hoping business would go well? I am not saying those things are bad. I am only asking whether something greater than those lay buried in that field, and we walked right past it. The Bible says:

"너희가 많이 뿌릴지라도 수확이 적으며 먹을지라도 배부르지 못하며 마실지라도 흡족하지 못하며 입어도 따뜻하지 못하며 일꾼이 삯을 받아도 그것을 구멍 뚫어진 전대에 넣음이 되느니라" (학 1:6)“You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.” (Hag 1:6)

구멍 뚫어진 전대. 여러분, 이 말씀이 낯설지 않으실 것입니다. 벌기는 버는데 남지를 않습니다. 쉬는 날도 없이 일하셨는데 손에 남은 것을 보면 허전할 때가 있지 않으십니까.A bag with holes. This word will not sound unfamiliar to you. You earn, but nothing stays. You worked without a day off, and yet when you look at what is left in your hands, isn't there a hollow feeling sometimes?

이것은 여러분을 책망하는 말씀이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 우리 마음을 먼저 아시고 하시는 말씀입니다. 인간이 그렇다는 것입니다.This is not a word of rebuke to you. It is a word God speaks knowing our hearts before we do. It is simply what human beings are like.

그러면 어떻게 해야 합니까. 더 열심히 하면 됩니까.Then what should we do? Will trying harder do it?

아닙니다. 열심으로 되는 일이라면 이스라엘 백성이 먼저 찾았을 것입니다. 우리가 모든 것을 팔아 밭을 사는 것은 보화 되시는 주 예수 그리스도만을 모시기 위해서입니다. 내 밭 안에 주님 되시는 예수 그리스도 외에 아무것도 남아 있지 않도록 하기 위함인 것입니다.No. If zeal could do it, the people of Israel would have found it first. We sell everything and buy the field in order to receive only the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the treasure. It is so that nothing remains in my field except Jesus Christ, who is Lord.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"예수께서 그를 보시고 사랑하사 이르시되 네게 아직 한 가지 부족한 것이 있으니 가서 네게 있는 것을 다 팔아 가난한 자들에게 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 따르라 하시니 그 사람은 재물이 많은 고로 이 말씀으로 인하여 슬픈 기색을 띠고 근심하며 가니라" (막 10:21-22)“And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’ Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Mark 10:21-22)

주님께서 그를 사랑하사 하신 말씀입니다. 그 청년이 돈이 모자랐습니까. 아닙니다. 재물이 많았습니다. 값이 부족한 것이 아니라 쥐고 있던 손을 못 편 것입니다.This is a word the Lord spoke because he loved him. Was that young man short of money? No — he had great possessions. It was not that the price was beyond him; it was that he could not open the hand he was clenching.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"그러나 무엇이든지 내게 유익하던 것을 내가 그리스도를 위하여 다 해로 여길뿐더러 또한 모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상하기 때문이라 내가 그를 위하여 모든 것을 잃어버리고 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻고" (빌 3:7-8)“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” (Phil 3:7-8)

바울 사도께서 무엇을 팔았습니까? 자기가 보기에 나쁜 것입니까? 아닙니다. 그의 자랑거리였습니다. 바울 사도의 좋은 혈통과 학벌과 열심과 흠 없는 의. 그가 그것을 유익하던 것이라 했지만, 그리스도만을 따르기 위해 배설물로 여길 것들이 바로 그것이었습니다. 버려야 할 것이 나쁜 것이라면 쉽습니다. 그러나 우리가 버려야 할 것들은 좋은 것이라서 어려운 것입니다. 그리고 이렇게 어려운 일은 우리 스스로는 할 수 없는 것입니다.What did the apostle Paul sell? Things he considered bad? No — they were his boast: his good lineage, his education, his zeal, his blameless righteousness. He called them gain, and yet these were exactly what he counted as rubbish in order to follow Christ alone. If what we had to throw away were bad things, it would be easy. But what we must throw away are good things — and that is what makes it hard. And a thing this hard, we cannot do on our own.

그렇다면 우리에게 소망이 없습니까. 아닙니다. 분명히 우리에게는 소망이 있습니다. 우리 주님께서 약속하셨습니다.Then is there no hope for us? No — we most certainly have hope. Our Lord has promised:

"구하라 그리하면 너희에게 주실 것이요 찾으라 그리하면 찾아낼 것이요 문을 두드리라 그리하면 너희에게 열릴 것이니 구하는 이마다 받을 것이요 찾는 이는 찾아낼 것이요 두드리는 이에게는 열릴 것이니라" (마 7:7-8)“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Matt 7:7-8)

찾는 이는 찾아낼 것이요. 주님을 찾기만 하면 찾아낸다고 하신 것입니다.The one who seeks finds. He has said that if we will only seek the Lord, we will find him.

여러분, 오늘 처음에 읽은 그 말씀, 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니라던 말씀이 바로 이 마태복음 7장에 있습니다. 같은 산 위에서 하신 같은 설교입니다. 주님을 부르기만 하고 순종하지 않은 사람은 들어가지 못하고, 진정으로 주님을 찾는 사람은 찾아내는 것입니다.The word we read at the beginning today — that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven — is in this very seventh chapter of Matthew. It is the same sermon, preached on the same mountain. The one who only calls on the Lord but does not obey does not enter; the one who truly seeks the Lord finds him.

그러니 파 보십시오. 반드시 나옵니다. 우리 하나님이 그렇게 약속하셨기 때문입니다.So dig. It will surely come out. Because our God has promised it.

다만 한 가지만 기억하십시오. 그 믿음의 쟁기도 우리가 만든 것이 아니라 주님이 우리 손에 쥐여 주신 것입니다. 사람이 스스로 올라갈 수 없다면 남은 길은 하나뿐입니다. 하나님이 친히 하늘로부터 내려오셔서 자기를 증언하시는 길뿐입니다. 우리 주님께서 친히 우리에게 오셔서 믿음의 쟁기를 쥐여 주셨습니다.Only remember one thing. Even that plow of faith is not something we made; the Lord put it into our hands. If man cannot ascend on his own, only one road remains — that God himself should come down from heaven and testify about himself. And our Lord came to us himself and placed the plow of faith in our hands.

결론

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분.Dear brothers and sisters.

오늘 우리는 세 가지를 열어 보았습니다.Today we have opened up three things.

감추어 두신 보화는 왕이신 하나님을 알아 가는 것, 곧 천국이었습니다. 그 밭은 아무도 하나님이 멀리 계신다고 핑계하지 못하도록, 하나님을 알 만한 증거를 우리 안과 밖에 두신 자리였습니다. 그리고 믿음은 그 보화를 사는 값이 아니라, 보화를 보게 하는 눈이며 그 밭을 가는 쟁기였습니다.The hidden treasure was coming to know God the King — that is, the kingdom of heaven. The field was the place where God set the evidence of himself both inside us and outside us, so that no one could plead that God is far away. And faith was not the price that buys the treasure but the eye that lets us see it and the plow that works that field.

그러면 그 왕께서 어떻게 우리에게 오셨습니까. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.Then how did that King come to us? The Bible says:

"옛적에 선지자들을 통하여 여러 부분과 여러 모양으로 우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 하나님이 이 모든 날 마지막에는 아들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨으니 이 아들을 만유의 상속자로 세우시고 또 그로 말미암아 모든 세계를 지으셨느니라" (히 1:1-2)“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” (Heb 1:1-2)

하나님은 하늘의 별로도, 땅의 만물로도, 율법과 선지자로도 쉬지 않고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 죄로 어두워진 우리가 보고도 보지 못하고 듣고도 깨닫지 못했습니다. 그래서 이 마지막 날에 아들을 통하여 말씀하신 것입니다. 왕이 친히 우리 밭으로 걸어 들어오신 것입니다.God spoke without ceasing — through the stars of heaven, through all the things of earth, through the law and the prophets. But we, darkened by sin, looked and did not see, listened and did not understand. So in these last days he spoke to us by his Son. The King himself walked into our field.

그 왕은 우리의 죄를 짊어지고 십자가에 달려 죽으셨고, 죽음을 깨뜨리고 다시 살아나셨습니다. 우리가 왕을 산 것이 아니라, 왕께서 자기 피로 우리를 사신 것입니다. 그러니 우리가 내려놓는 것은 구원의 값이 아니라, 더 큰 보화를 발견한 기쁨의 열매인 것입니다.That King bore our sins, was hung on a cross and died, and broke death open and rose again. We did not buy the King; the King bought us with his own blood. So what we lay down is not the price of salvation but the fruit of the joy of having found a greater treasure.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"그 안에는 지혜와 지식의 모든 보화가 감추어져 있느니라" (골 2:3)“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col 2:3)

보화와 감추어짐. 마태복음의 밭에 감추인 보화가 골로새서에서 그리스도 안에 있는 모든 보화로 그 얼굴을 드러냅니다. 우리가 얻은 것은 영토가 아니라, 왕이신 그리스도 자신인 것입니다.Treasure, and hiddenness. The treasure hidden in the field in Matthew shows its face in Colossians as all the treasures that are in Christ. What we have gained is not territory but Christ himself, the King.

그리고 '모든' 보화라고 하셨습니다. 하나를 캐면 또 있습니다. 평생 알아도 다 알 수 없습니다. 그러므로 더 깊은 것을 찾는다는 것은 그리스도 밖으로 나가는 것이 아니라, 그리스도 안으로 더 깊이 들어가는 것입니다.And he said all the treasures. Dig one out and there is another. A whole lifetime of knowing will not exhaust it. Therefore to seek something deeper is not to go outside of Christ but to go further in, deeper into Christ.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Bible says:

"어두운 데에 빛이 비치라 말씀하셨던 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 얼굴에 있는 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛을 우리 마음에 비추셨느니라 우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라" (고후 4:6-7)“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” (2 Cor 4:6-7)

어두운 데에 빛이 비치라 하신 그 창조는 우리가 사는 둘째 대지의 밭이요, 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛은 첫째 대지의 보화이며, 예수 그리스도의 얼굴은 우리가 찾던 만왕의 왕이시고, 이 보배를 담은 질그릇은 바로 셋째 대지의 우리 자신인 것입니다.That creation, where he said “Let light shine out of darkness,” is the field of our second point, where we live. The light of the knowledge of God's glory is the treasure of the first point. The face of Jesus Christ is the King of kings we were seeking. And the jar of clay that holds this treasure is we ourselves, the third point.

세월의 무게로 쇠약해진 우리 육체와 마음이라는 초라한 질그릇입니다. 조금 전에 읽은 그 말씀 그대로입니다. '내 육체와 마음은 쇠약하나.' 그런데 하나님께서 바로 그 질그릇 안에 보배를 담아 주셨습니다. 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 하심인 것입니다.A shabby jar of clay — our body and heart, worn down by the weight of the years. Exactly as the word we read a moment ago says: “My flesh and my heart may fail.” And yet God placed the treasure inside that very jar of clay. It is to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

그리고 놓치지 마십시오. '가졌으니.' 이미 가졌다고 말씀하시는 것입니다.And do not miss this: “we have.” He is saying we already have it.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 지금 우리 손에 보화가 들려 있습니까.Dear brothers and sisters — is there treasure in our hands right now?

예수 그리스도를 주님으로 믿는 성도 여러분, 들려 있습니다. 하나님께서 질그릇 같은 우리 안에 그 보배를 담아 주셨습니다. 이 땅에서 지치도록 일해 오신 그 손은 결코 비어 있지 않은 것입니다. 혹 아직 그리스도를 믿지 않는 분이 계시다면, 빈손으로 그리스도께 나오시기 바랍니다. 왕께서 이미 십자가에서 값을 다 치르셨습니다.Saints who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord — yes, it is there. God has placed that treasure inside us, jars of clay that we are. Those hands, which have worked in this land to the point of exhaustion, are by no means empty. And if there is anyone here who does not yet believe in Christ, come to Christ empty-handed. The King has already paid the whole price on the cross.

그래서 사도가 교회를 위하여 이렇게 기도합니다. 성경은 말씀 하십니다.And so the apostle prays this way for the church. The Bible says:

"너희 마음의 눈을 밝히사 그의 부르심의 소망이 무엇이며 성도 안에서 그 기업의 영광의 풍성함이 무엇이며" (엡 1:18)“Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” (Eph 1:18)

이미 받은 기업이 얼마나 풍성한지 알게 해 달라는 기도입니다.It is a prayer that we would come to know how rich the inheritance we have already received truly is.

마지막으로 순서를 보십시오. "기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아." 기쁨이 먼저입니다. 은혜가 먼저이고 발견이 먼저입니다. 더 크고 영원한 보화를 발견한 기쁨이 우리 손을 저절로 펼치게 만드는 것입니다.Finally, look at the order: “Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has.” Joy comes first. Grace comes first, and the finding comes first. The joy of having found a greater and eternal treasure is what opens our clenched hands all by itself.

이번 한 주간, 이미 여러분에게 맡겨진 삶과 말씀의 밭을 조금만 더 깊이 파 보시기 바랍니다. 그리스도 안으로 더 깊이 들어가시기 바랍니다. 성령께서 우리 마음의 눈을 밝혀 주시기를 구하시기 바랍니다.This week, dig just a little deeper into the field of the life and the Word already entrusted to you. Go further in, deeper into Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten the eyes of our hearts.

우리 모두의 마음의 눈이 밝아져서, 이미 우리에게 주신 그 보화를 날마다 새롭게 캐내고 누리게 되시기를, 세상도 죽음도 빼앗을 수 없는 보화 되신 예수 그리스도를 더욱 깊이 알아 가시기를, 그리하여 영원하신 하나님을 영원토록 알고 사랑하고 즐거워하는 참된 영생의 기쁨이 여러분의 영혼과 삶에 충만하시기를, 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 간절히 축원 드립니다.May the eyes of all our hearts be enlightened, so that we dig up and enjoy afresh each day the treasure already given to us; may you come to know ever more deeply Jesus Christ, the treasure that neither the world nor death can take away; and may the joy of true eternal life — knowing, loving, and delighting in the eternal God forever — fill your souls and your lives. I bless you earnestly in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
