Scripture Reading: Hebrews 2:14–15 14 “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Dear brothers and sisters.

Do you remember the day you first came to this land? It was a place you had never been. The language did not connect; you knew no one. No one told you what was waiting for you. As you packed those bags, how did your heart feel? You must have been afraid.

But when you travel a long road, everything changes if there is just one person who has gone ahead of you. One person who says he will be waiting at the airport — someone who has already lived in that land and knows what is where. Then you pack the very same bags, but the weight on your heart is entirely different. The bags did not get lighter. The destination did not change. The fear shrinks because of one single fact: someone who knows me is already there.

Dear brothers and sisters, what people fear is usually not the thing itself. What we fear is having to walk an unknown road to face it.

Last Wednesday our brother Lawrence received the Lord's call home. It had been a long season on a sickbed. But the brother we remember was always the first to smile, the first to come near and ask how we were doing. And through all those long years, sister Ko never left his side for a single day.

Even three days before he passed, we worshiped together with him. We shared the Word, prayed together, and sang hymns. And three days later, he breathed his last in deep peace. Dear brothers and sisters, I believe that was a grace God bestowed.

May our God's comfort overflow upon dear sister Ko, the two sons and two daughters, and the grandchildren. And today, from this place, I want to say one thing: our church stands beside that family. You do not walk this road alone. Dear brothers and sisters, I ask you to pray for this family.

And that news is quietly asking each one of us a question today: that day will come for me as well.

It is not that we do not know this. We simply live without thinking about it. Then we stand before news like this, and all the postponed questions rise up at once.

We talk a great deal about heaven. But we rarely talk about what death itself actually is. And what happens then? We believe in heaven — yet death still frightens us.

Today's text tells us why our Lord came as a man. And one of the reasons is this: “and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Today I want to share three things: what we fear, what the Bible calls death, and why we no longer have to live bound by that fear.

The Bible says:

"저가 모든 원수를 그 발 아래 둘 때까지 불가불 왕 노릇 하시리니 맨 나중에 멸망 받을 원수는 사망이니라" (고린도전서 15:25–26)“For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” (1 Corinthians 15:25–26)

The Bible calls death an enemy — something to be destroyed. Scripture never dresses death up as something beautiful.

Our Lord was the same. When he stood before Lazarus's tomb, Scripture records it this way:

"예수께서 그의 우는 것과 또 함께 온 유대인들의 우는 것을 보시고 심령에 통분히 여기시고 민망히 여기사" (요한복음 11:33)“When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.” (John 11:33)

This does not mean merely that his heart ached. It points to a holy anger surging up from within. Something fierce boiled up in the spirit of our Lord as he stood before that tomb.

Then at what was the Lord angry? At the people weeping? No. Think about what he saw in that moment. He saw people standing before a tomb — people who could do nothing but weep, people who had collapsed before death without being able to lift a hand against it.

And what was it that held them in that grip? It was death. Yes — our Lord was angry at death, which held those people captive.

Dear brothers and sisters, this is exactly the scene today's text describes: people subject to lifelong slavery through fear of death. That is what the Lord saw before the tomb, and it made his spirit burn.

11:35).And two verses later, Scripture records one short, weighty sentence: “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35)

Dear brothers and sisters, consider one thing here. In just a little while, the Lord would call Lazarus back out of the tomb alive. He already knew how this would end. And still he wept.

We assume that if we knew the ending, we would not weep. But our Lord knew the ending and wept anyway. Why? Because he was standing before the enemy. And he saw how that enemy tears loved ones apart and binds those who remain tightly in fear — and at that, he was angry.

Dear brothers and sisters, then who were those people the Lord saw before the tomb? This is not just a story about Judeans two thousand years ago. People who can do nothing before death but sink to the ground — that is us.

Yet Scripture does not rebuke that fear. Today's text diagnoses the human condition like this:

2:15)“…all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” (Hebrews 2:15)

Dear brothers and sisters, Scripture does not scold us, saying, 'Stop being afraid.' It simply tells the truth as it is: people fear death and live their whole lives bound to that fear.

But we must not stop there. Why does Scripture say this? Not to leave us where we are — but to bring us out.

Feeling fear and living a lifetime enslaved to that fear are not the same thing. Having faith does not mean feeling no fear at all before death; it means that fear can no longer be our master.

Our Lord did not come to rebuke our feelings. He came to break the chains of that fear.

Deep down, there are at least three fears.

First, the fear of not knowing. Where do we go when we die? What happens in the moment breath stops? We know everything about the life we have lived, but that one thing we do not know — because no one has gone and come back to tell us. And human beings tremble most before what they cannot know.

Second, the fear of judgment. We may deceive others, but we cannot deceive ourselves. No one knows my life better than I do. Standing alone before a holy God, what could I possibly say? This is the second fear lying deep in the heart.

Third, the fear of vanishing. This body returns to dust. The people who remembered me will someday all be gone as well. The hollow dread that the person I know as 'me' will simply cease to exist — that is the third fear.

Dear brothers and sisters, today let us see, one by one, how the Bible answers these three fears.

What does the world call death? It calls it the end. It calls it loss. It calls it something that cannot be helped.

But the Bible calls the same thing by a different name.

11:11)“After saying these things, he said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.’” (John 11:11)

He said Lazarus was sleeping. Dear brothers and sisters, sleep is not the end. Sleep is a passage on the way to waking.

Does anyone lie down at night thinking, 'Now it is all over'? No one. Because we know morning is coming. And inside the very word 'sleep' one thing is already contained: there is Someone who will wake us, and there is a time to wake.

And what did the Lord say next? “But I go to awaken him.” Yes — 'he has fallen asleep' and 'I go to awaken him' stand together in a single sentence.

Let me make one thing clear here. When the Lord called it sleep, he did not mean lying there knowing nothing. What is said to be asleep is the body our eyes can see. Then while the body sleeps, where is the soul?

On the cross, a thief made his plea to the Lord. And what did the Lord answer? The Bible says:

23:43)“And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.’” (Luke 23:43)

The Lord said, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Dear brothers and sisters — not later. Not some stretch of waiting somewhere, apart from Christ. He said today.

Who was this man? A thief hanging on a cross. He had no time left to be baptized, no time to prove himself by good works, no time to go back and live his life over. All he had left was one thing: faith that entrusted himself to the Lord. And to him the Lord said — today.

Then what do we learn here? That entering heaven does not depend on the merit or qualifications we have piled up. It depends solely on the grace of the Lord who carries us home. And Scripture tells us that seeing the Lord happens the moment we leave this world.

The apostle Paul says the same thing.

1:23)“I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.” (Philippians 1:23)

Yes — between departing this world and being with Christ, nothing stands in between. The moment we leave this world is the moment we are with Christ.

And so the first fear has been answered. We do not know every detail of the process of death. But now we know one thing for certain: we know who we will be with the moment we leave this world. Scripture has already spoken it — we will be with Christ. Yes, it is not that we could not know; it is only that we had not yet listened closely to this word.

Then what changes in that place? Let me mention just two things.

First, our battle ends.

The Bible says:

"하늘에 기록한 장자들의 총회와 교회와 만민의 심판자이신 하나님과 및 온전케 된 의인의 영들과" (히브리서 12:23)“…to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.” (Hebrews 12:23)

Made perfect,” it says. Dear brothers and sisters, what is it that has ended?

We believed in Jesus and our sins were forgiven. But did the desire to sin disappear as well? No. So we fight every day. We resolve in the morning and collapse by evening. Even after decades of believing, it is so. On this earth, that battle never ends.

But in that place, together with Christ, this battle is completely over. Not only forgiven — the very root of sin is pulled out. We will never fall again. We will not have to march back to the battlefield every morning. Our brother Lawrence is in that place right now.

Yet notice — Scripture says “the spirits of the righteous.” Spirits, not bodies. When God made man, he made soul and body together, and death has torn the two apart. So that place is truly blessed, but it is not yet the final completion of salvation, for the day remains when that body will rise again from the grave. Still, as for the battle with sin — it ends the very moment our soul leaves this earth.

Second, our labor ends.

The Bible says:

"또 내가 들으니 하늘에서 음성이 나서 가로되 기록하라 지금 이후로 주 안에서 죽는 자들은 복이 있도다 하시매 성령이 가라사대 그러하다 저희 수고를 그치고 쉬리니 이는 저희의 행한 일이 따름이라 하시더라" (요한계시록 14:13)“And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!’” (Revelation 14:13)

Look closely here. It does not say that every death is blessed. It says “the dead who die in the Lord.” It is not death that is blessed — it is the person who is in the Lord who is blessed.

And what is promised to them? “That they may rest from their labors.” Yes — the pain of that sick body, all the burdens carried through a lifetime, none of it can hold them any longer.

Dear brothers and sisters, therefore for the one who is in Christ, death is not the end. The body sleeps awaiting resurrection, and the soul departs this world to be with the Lord. That is what Scripture calls paradise. But the final completion is the resurrection — the day the Lord comes again and even that body rises to life.

But here we must ask: how did this come to be? How did death, the enemy, become a doorway to the place where we are with the Lord?

Today's text gives the answer.

"자녀들은 혈육에 함께 속하였으매 그도 또한 한 모양으로 혈육에 함께 속하심은 사망으로 말미암아 사망의 세력을 잡은 자 곧 마귀를 없이 하시며" (히브리서 2:14)“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.” (Hebrews 2:14)

Look first at the opening: “Since the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things.”

Dear brothers and sisters, what did the Lord do to rescue us from death? He did not stand outside of death and merely issue commands. The Lord put on the very same flesh and blood as ours. The Son of God, over whom death has no rule, clothed himself in a body that could die and came down to our side. So Christmas and the cross are not two separate events. They were one single step of the living God, taken in order to enter personally into the very death we fear.

And look at what follows: “that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.”

Dear brothers and sisters, it says he destroyed him. It does not say he merely weakened him.

Scripture calls the devil “the one who has the power of death.” Gripping that power of death, the devil has accused mankind: 'How could someone like you ever stand before God? There is no hope for you.' With guilt and the terror of death he has bound human beings all their lives.

But the Lord tore it out of his hand. With what? With his own death. With the very death the devil swung to swallow us, the Lord shattered the power of death itself.

Was not the cross exactly this? Was there anything crueler ever devised by man? It was an instrument erected to kill. Yet what happened on that tree? Our Lord bore our sins in our place and died — and by his dying, we came to live. The very place erected to kill became the place that gives life.

Since Christ bore the full price of our sin, the devil's grounds for accusing us have vanished. With what could an accuser who has lost his accusation still hold us? There the devil was finished. And on that day, the Lord will do away with him completely in eternal judgment.

And we must not stop here. Our Lord did not merely go ahead of us into the way of death. He came back from that death alive. He is not one who took a look at what lies beyond and returned; he is the One who entered into death itself, broke its door open from the inside, opened the stone tomb, and walked out alive.

I said earlier that we fear a place we have never been because we do not know it. But the One who has already passed through that valley of death in victory is leading us. Then it is no longer an unknown road. Death can no longer rule over us — because the Lord who conquered death is the One leading us.

Now the second fear. We said we fear death because we fear the judgment that follows it.

The Bible says:

"내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라" (요한복음 5:24)“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” (John 5:24)

There are three things in this single verse: first, 'has eternal life'; second, 'does not come into judgment'; third, 'has passed from death to life.'

Dear brothers and sisters, the Word does not say, 'I will move you from death to life.' It says, 'has passed.' The move is already complete. We are not transferred at last when we die — we were transferred already, on the day we believed.

Then where did the judgment we deserved go? Did it simply disappear? No. It was already carried out two thousand years ago on the cross on Calvary's hill. Our Lord stood in the place where we should have stood and received the full verdict. It was paid in full. The Lord paid the whole price of our sin, and God is not one who collects the same debt twice.

Dear brothers and sisters, the trial that would condemn anyone in Christ has already been held, and it is already over. Only — the One who sat in the defendant's seat was not us.

Now the third fear. We said we fear vanishing forever in death.

To answer this, the apostle takes us to a farmer. The Bible says:

"어리석은 자여 너의 뿌리는 씨가 죽지 않으면 살아나지 못하겠고 또 너의 뿌리는 것은 장래 형체를 뿌리는 것이 아니요 다만 밀이나 다른 것의 알갱이뿐이로되" (고린도전서 15:36–37)“You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain.” (1 Corinthians 15:36–37)

Think about it. A farmer sows grains of wheat. From the outside, what does it look like he is doing? It looks like he is burying perfectly good grain in the dirt, destroying it. To someone who knows nothing of farming, it would seem too wasteful to watch.

But does the farmer call it losing? Does he call it throwing away? No. He calls it planting.

And notice one thing more. Do what is sown and what comes up look the same? You plant a kernel of wheat — does a bare kernel come back up? No. A green shoot rises, and then the full head of grain. The form is entirely different, yet the life within is the same. The same life rises in an entirely different glory.

Scripture says, “What you sow is not the body that is to be.” Dear brothers and sisters, do not miss this. What we bury in the ground is a small, weak kernel. We have never yet seen the full grain God will make of it. So we must never judge the harvest of resurrection by the little kernel being buried.

The apostle goes on to proclaim:

"죽은 자의 부활도 이와 같으니 썩을 것으로 심고 썩지 아니할 것으로 다시 살며 욕된 것으로 심고 영광스러운 것으로 다시 살며 약한 것으로 심고 강한 것으로 다시 살며" (고린도전서 15:42–43)“So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.” (1 Corinthians 15:42–43)

Scripture does not deny death. It says plainly that the seed dies. But it never says that death is the end. It does not say 'thrown away' — it says 'sown.'

Yes — laying that body in the grave after death is not an ending. It is, the Word says, a planting.

Dear brothers and sisters, we plant that body with tears. But the One who will raise it again is not us — it is God. So this hope does not rest on how well we endure. It rests on how faithful the God who raises the dead is.

And what kind of God is he? Our Lord is the God who died on the cross to raise us again, and who conquered death all the way to resurrection. It is the promise of One that faithful that we hold on to as we live.

Therefore we do not vanish. We are planted — as seed that will rise again.

Dear brothers and sisters, we began today by naming the three fears we carry.

We were afraid because we did not know the road. But now we know. We may not know every step of the way, but we know who we will be with the moment we leave this world.

We feared judgment. But that judgment was already paid in full two thousand years ago, by the precious blood of Christ on Calvary's cross. The one who believes in Christ has already passed from death to life.

We feared extinction and vanishing. But we do not vanish — we are holily planted. Last week we planted our brother's body with tears. But God will raise it again as an imperishable body, a glorious body.

And so today's text boldly proclaims to us:

2:15)“…and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” (Hebrews 2:15)

To set them free!”

This is the decisive reason our Lord himself put on flesh and blood and came to this earth: to set fully free those of us who lived our whole lives enslaved, tangled in the terror of death.

Dear brothers and sisters, the life of a person still bound by fear and the life of a person set free from it are completely different.

The one who is bound lives struggling never to think of life's end — changing the subject and looking away whenever death is mentioned. But the one set free in the Lord knows that end clearly and still lives today with boldness.

He is not a person who lives forgetting death. He is a person who knows death is never the last word, and so lives this day called 'today' more honestly and truly. He expresses today the love he had postponed. He reconciles today with the one he must forgive. He opens the hands he had clenched so desperately for fear of losing, and shares with his neighbor. And he stands with courage before the calling the Lord has entrusted to him.

Only in the Lord who conquered death can we look at death without turning away — and still live today in hope. This is the true freedom the Lord has given us.

Dear brothers and sisters, before Lazarus's tomb the Lord asked Martha:

"예수께서 가라사대 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐" (요한복음 11:25–26)“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25–26)

To this question, Martha answered:

11:27)“She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.’” (John 11:27)

Yes, Lord — I believe!”

Last week we watched our brother Lawrence give this answer to the very last moment of his life. While he had a voice, with his voice; when his voice was closed, with his hand; and when even that hand had stiffened, with a single eyelid — to the very end he responded 'Amen' to the word of the Lord.

With the last strength he had left, our brother answered. And today, to us who can still hear the Lord's word and still respond, the Lord asks the very same question.

Do you believe this?”

Dear brothers and sisters, may you answer today in faith: “Yes, Lord — I believe.”
