서론 — 두 제작자

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 저는 평생 무언가를 짓는 일을 해 온 사람입니다. 도면을 그리고, 건물을 세웁니다. 그런데 이 일을 오래 할수록 분명해지는 사실이 하나 있습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, I have spent my life building things. I draw plans; I put up buildings. And the longer I do this work, the clearer one thing becomes.

설계하는 사람이 질서를 발명한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 중력을 제가 만들지 않았습니다. 빛이 어떻게 들어오는지, 나무와 돌이 어떻게 힘을 받아 견디는지, 그 본성을 제가 정한 것이 아닙니다. 설계하는 사람은 다만 이미 놓여 있는 하나님의 질서를 읽고, 그 질서에 순종하여 건물을 세울 뿐입니다.The one who designs did not invent the order. I did not make gravity. How light enters, how wood and stone bear a load and hold — I did not determine their nature. The designer only reads the order God has already laid down, and builds in obedience to it.

그 질서를 어기면 어떻게 됩니까. 건물이 서지 않습니다. 무너집니다.And what happens if you violate that order? The building does not stand. It collapses.

그런데 오늘 본문에는 전혀 다른 제작자가 나옵니다. 이 사람은 하나님의 질서를 읽지 않습니다. 오히려 우상을 지어냅니다. 그리고 자기가 지어낸 것 앞에 엎드려 절을 합니다. 겉으로 보면 똑같이 무언가를 만드는 일을 하는 것인데, 그 방향이 정반대인 것입니다.But in today's text a completely different maker appears. This man does not read God's order. Instead he manufactures an idol. And then he bows down before the thing he made. On the surface it looks like the same work of making something — yet the direction is exactly opposite.

오늘 본문은 짧은 두 절입니다. 그런데 그 안에 증인석이 두 개 나옵니다. 8절에서 하나님은 말씀하십니다. "너희는 나의 증인이라." 하나님의 증인석입니다. 그리고 9절에 또 다른 증인들이 나옵니다. "그것의 증인들" — 우상의 증인들입니다.Today's text is only two short verses. Yet within them stand two witness boxes. In verse 8 God says, “You are my witnesses.” That is God's witness box. And in verse 9 another set of witnesses appears — “their witnesses,” the witnesses of the idols.

사랑하는 여러분, 성경은 이 둘 사이에 중간 자리를 두지 않습니다. 우리 모두는 이미 어느 한곳의 증인석에 서 있습니다. 하나님의 증인이 되든, 우상의 증인이 되든 둘 중 하나인 것입니다.Beloved, Scripture leaves no neutral ground between the two. Every one of us is already standing in one witness box or the other. Either a witness of God, or a witness of an idol — one of the two.

그래서 오늘 세 가지를 여쭙고자 합니다. 첫째, 사람은 왜 우상을 만드는가. 둘째, 우상을 만든 사람은 어떻게 되는가. 셋째, 하나님은 자기의 증인을 어떻게 세우시는가.So today I want to ask three questions. First, why do people make idols? Second, what becomes of the one who makes an idol? Third, how does God establish his own witnesses?

1. 사람은 왜 우상을 만듭니까

9절은 이렇게 시작합니다. "우상을 만드는 자는 다 허망하도다." 비웃기는 쉽습니다. 멀쩡한 어른이 나무토막을 깎아 놓고 그 앞에 엎드려 절을 합니다. 당연히 어리석어 보입니다. 그러나 비웃고 지나가면 오늘 말씀은 남의 이야기로 끝나고 맙니다.Verse 9 begins, “All who fashion idols are nothing.” It is easy to laugh. A grown man carves a block of wood and then bows down before it. Of course it looks foolish. But if we merely laugh and move on, today's word ends up being about someone else.

물어야 합니다. 도대체 왜 사람이 저런 일을 하는가?We must ask: why on earth does a person do such a thing?

그런데 그 전에 짚어야 할 것이 있습니다. 우상이란 무엇입니까. 나무토막과 금덩이가 우상의 전부가 아닙니다.But before that, something must be settled. What is an idol? Blocks of wood and lumps of gold are not the whole of it.

우상은 하나님을 찾지 못한 사람이 세운 대용품이 아닙니다. 우상은 하나님을 하나님으로 모시기 싫은 사람이 하나님 자리에 세운 대체물입니다.An idol is not a substitute erected by someone who could not find God. An idol is a replacement set up in God's place by someone unwilling to have God be God.

사람은 하나님이 없어서 우상을 만드는 것이 아니라, 나를 다스리시는 하나님을 피하려고 내가 다룰 수 있는 신을 만드는 것입니다.People do not make idols because there is no God. They make a god they can manage in order to avoid the God who rules them.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 우리 마음속을 그려 보시기 바랍니다. 하나님을 향한 길 하나만 곧게 나 있으면 되는 것입니다. 그런데 우리 마음은 그렇게 생기지 않았습니다. 수만 갈래 길이 얽히고설킨 미로와 같습니다. 그리고 그 길 끝마다 우상이 하나씩 서 있습니다. 길이 수만 갈래면, 우상도 수만 개인 것입니다.Dear brothers and sisters, picture your own heart. One straight road toward God would be enough. But our hearts are not built that way. They are a maze of tens of thousands of tangled paths. And at the end of each path stands an idol. If there are ten thousand roads, there are ten thousand idols.

왜 수많은 인간은 하나님을 향한 그 한 길만 찾지 못합니까. 하나님께서 길을 감추셔서가 아닙니다. 우리의 욕심과 죄가 그 길을 향해 서는 것을 막기 때문입니다.Why can so many people not find that one road to God? Not because God hid it. Because our greed and our sin keep us from turning to face it.

사람의 마음은 참 이상합니다. 하나님을 두려워하면서, 동시에 하나님을 피해 도망가고 싶어합니다. 동산에서 아담이 드린 첫 대답이 그것이었습니다.The human heart is a strange thing. It fears God and at the same time wants to run away from him. That was Adam's first answer in the garden.

"가로되 내가 동산에서 하나님의 소리를 듣고 내가 벗었으므로 두려워하여 숨었나이다"(창 3:10)“And he said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.’” (Genesis 3:10)

두려워하면서, 숨습니다. 왜 도망갑니까. 하나님이 원하시는 대로가 아니라 내 맘대로 살고 싶었기 때문입니다. 뱀이 처음 속삭인 말을 보십시오.Afraid — and hiding. Why run? Because he wanted to live his own way, not God's way. Look at what the serpent first whispered.

"너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄을 하나님이 아심이니라"(창 3:5)“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)

하나님과 같이 된다 — 내가 내 인생의 하나님이 되고 싶은 것입니다. 그래서 참 하나님을 향한 그 한 길은 애써 피하면서, 마음속에 수만 갈래 샛길을 냅니다. 그리고 그 샛길 끝마다 우상이 한 자리씩 차지합니다.You will be like God — I want to be the god of my own life. And so, carefully avoiding the one road to the true God, we cut ten thousand side paths in our hearts. And at the end of each side path an idol takes its seat.

그러면 이 미로는 어떻게 해서 생겨납니까. 성경이 그 이유를 알려 줍니다.So how does this maze come into being? Scripture tells us why.

첫째, 사람은 예배하도록 지음받았기 때문입니다.First, because human beings were made to worship.

전도서 3장 11절은 이렇게 말씀하십니다.Ecclesiastes 3:11 says this:

"하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨고 또 사람에게 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라"(전 3:11)“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨기에, 사람의 마음은 빈 채로 있을 수 없습니다. 하나님이 채워 주셔야 할 자리가 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 예레미야를 통해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.Because he has put eternity in our hearts, the human heart cannot stay empty. There is a place in it that only God can fill. Through Jeremiah God said this:

"내 백성이 두 가지 악을 행하였나니 곧 생수의 근원되는 나를 버린 것과 스스로 웅덩이를 판 것인데 그것은 물을 저축지 못할 터진 웅덩이니라"(렘 2:13)“My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

하나님을 버린 것에서 죄가 끝나지 않았습니다. 샘을 버린 사람은 반드시 웅덩이를 팝니다. 로마서도 똑같이 말씀합니다.The sin did not stop at forsaking God. Whoever abandons the fountain will inevitably dig a cistern. Romans says the same thing.

"썩어지지 아니하는 하나님의 영광을 썩어질 사람과 금수와 버러지 형상의 우상으로 바꾸었느니라"(롬 1:23)“And exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.” (Romans 1:23)

동사를 보십시오. '버렸다'가 아닙니다. "바꾸었느니라"입니다.Look at the verb. It is not “abandoned.” It is “exchanged.”

사람은 예배를 끊을 수 없습니다. 다만 그 대상을 바꿀 수 있을 뿐인 것입니다.A human being cannot stop worshiping. He can only change the object of his worship.

둘째, 참 하나님은 내 마음대로 되지 않기 때문입니다.Second, because the true God will not bend to my will.

호렙산에서의 일을 모세는 이렇게 회고합니다.Moses recalls what happened at Horeb this way:

"여호와께서 화염 중에서 너희에게 말씀하시되 음성 뿐이므로 너희가 그 말소리만 듣고 형상은 보지 못하였느니라"(신 4:12)“Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.” (Deuteronomy 4:12)

참 하나님은 보이지 않으십니다. 그리고 어떤 때는 더디게 느껴지십니다. 백성은 언제 금송아지를 만들었습니까.The true God is unseen. And at times he feels slow. When did the people make the golden calf?

"백성이 모세가 산에서 내려옴이 더딤을 보고 모여 아론에게 이르러 가로되 일어나라 우리를 인도할 신을 우리를 위하여 만들라"(출 32:1)“When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, ‘Up, make us gods who shall go before us.’” (Exodus 32:1)

더딤을 보고 — 하나님이 더디시다고 느껴지는 그 순간, 사람의 손이 움직이기 시작한 것입니다.When they saw the delay — the moment God feels slow to us, the human hand starts to move.

그리고 참 하나님은 나를 다스리려 하십니다. 그런데 사람이 만든 신은 정반대입니다. 본문 13절입니다.And the true God intends to rule me. But a god made by human hands is the exact opposite. Here is verse 13 of our chapter.

"목공은 줄을 늘여 재고 붓으로 긋고 대패로 밀고 정규로 그어 사람의 아름다움을 따라 인형을 새겨 집에 두게 하며"(사 44:13)“The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.” (Isaiah 44:13)

사람의 아름다움을 따라 — 내 마음에 드는 모양대로 깎는 것입니다. 그리고 17절입니다.With the beauty of a man — carved into whatever shape pleases me. And then verse 17.

"그 앞에 부복하여 경배하며 그것에게 기도하여 이르기를 너는 나의 신이니 나를 구원하라 하는도다"(사 44:17)“He falls down before it and worships; he prays to it and says, ‘Deliver me, for you are my god!’” (Isaiah 44:17)

내가 주문한 모양대로 만들어지고, 내가 부르면 응답해야 하는 신입니다. 살아 계신 하나님은 나를 다스리시지만, 만든 신은 내가 다스립니다.A god made to my order, a god who must answer when I call. The living God rules me; the god I made, I rule.

사람이 우상을 만드는 것은 어리석어서가 아니라, 다스림받기 싫어서입니다. 내가 주인 노릇 하는 그 신이 과연 나를 구원할 수 있겠습니까.People make idols not because they are stupid but because they refuse to be ruled. Can a god over whom I play master ever save me?

셋째, 인간의 두려움이 우상을 만드는 것입니다.Third, it is human fear that makes idols.

오늘 본문 8절이 어떻게 시작하는지 보셨습니까. "너희는 두려워 말며 겁내지 말라." 하나님은 증인을 세우시기 전에 먼저 두려움부터 말씀하십니다. 왜 그렇습니까. 우상이 태어나는 자리가 바로 두려움이기 때문입니다.Did you notice how verse 8 begins? “Fear not, nor be afraid.” Before God establishes his witnesses, he first addresses their fear. Why? Because fear is the very womb in which idols are born.

불안한 마음은 지금 당장 확인할 수 있는 보증을 찾습니다. 본문에 나오는 우상의 재료를 보십시오. 은이요 금이요 철이요 나무 — 전부 눈에 보이고 손에 만져지는 것들입니다.An anxious heart looks for a guarantee it can verify right now. Look at the materials of the idols in our text — silver, gold, iron, wood. Every one of them visible to the eye and solid to the touch.

그러면 오늘 우리 시대의 우상은 무엇입니까. 반드시 손에 잡히지는 않습니다. 그러나 언제나 즉시 확인됩니다. 돈이 그렇습니다. 통장의 숫자는 눈으로 확인됩니다. 성공도, 사람의 인정도 그렇습니다.So what are the idols of our own day? They are not necessarily things you can hold. But they can always be checked immediately. Money is like that — the number in the account can be verified with the eye. So can success. So can the approval of people.

보이지 않는 하나님을 기다리는 대신, 지금 당장 확인되는 보증을 움켜쥐는 것 — 그것이 우상의 시작인 것입니다.Instead of waiting for the God we cannot see, we clutch a guarantee we can verify this instant — that is where idolatry begins.

그리고 여기서 무서운 일이 시작됩니다. 사람은 자기가 만든 것을 닮아 갑니다.And here is where the terrible thing begins. A person comes to resemble what he has made.

시편 115편은 우상을 이렇게 노래합니다.Psalm 115 sings of idols this way:

"저희 우상은 은과 금이요 사람의 수공물이라 입이 있어도 말하지 못하며 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하며"(시 115:4–6)“Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear.” (Psalm 115:4–6)

그리고 이렇게 끝을 맺습니다.And it ends like this:

"우상을 만드는 자와 그것을 의지하는 자가 다 그와 같으리로다"(시 115:8)“Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.” (Psalm 115:8)

눈 없는 신을 섬기면 보지 못하는 사람이 됩니다. 그래서 9절이 말씀하는 것입니다. "그것의 증인들은 보지도 못하며 알지도 못하니."Serve a god with no eyes and you become a person who cannot see. That is why verse 9 says, “Their witnesses neither see nor know.”

정리하겠습니다. 우상은 무신론자가 만드는 것이 아닙니다. 인간은 하나님에 대한 예배를 멈출 수 없는데 참 하나님을 기다리지 못하는 사람이 만드는 것입니다.Let me summarize. Idols are not made by atheists. They are made by people who cannot stop worshiping God and yet cannot wait for the true God.

그러므로 오늘 우리의 질문은 "나는 우상이 없습니까"가 아닙니다. "내가 두려울 때 내 손이 가장 먼저 가서 쥐는 것이 무엇입니까." 그것이 우리의 질문입니다.So our question today is not “Do I have any idols?” It is this: “When I am afraid, what does my hand reach for first?” That is our question.

2. 만든 사람은 자기가 속은 줄도 모릅니다

이제 두 번째입니다. 그렇다면 우상을 만든 사람은 어떻게 됩니까.Now the second point. What, then, becomes of the one who makes an idol?

본문 앞뒤를 보면 이 목공은 무능한 사람이 아닙니다. 12절과 13절이 그의 기술을 그립니다. 줄을 늘여 재고, 붓으로 긋고, 대패로 밀고, 정규로 긋습니다. 오늘로 말하면 자와 먹줄과 컴퍼스를 제대로 다룰 줄 아는 숙련공입니다. 그런데 18절이 말씀합니다.Look at the surrounding verses and you see this carpenter is no incompetent. Verses 12 and 13 describe his skill — he stretches a line, marks with a pencil, shapes with planes, marks with a compass. In today's terms, a craftsman who knows how to handle a rule, a chalk line and a compass. And yet verse 18 says:

"그들이 알지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못함은 그 눈이 가리워져서 보지 못하며 그 마음이 어두워져서 깨닫지 못함이라"(사 44:18)“They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.” (Isaiah 44:18)

솜씨 좋은 손과 눈먼 마음이 한 사람 안에 있습니다. 문제는 기술이 아니라 눈입니다. 그래서 이 병은 배운다고 낫지 않습니다. 로마서는 말씀하십니다. "스스로 지혜 있다 하나 우준하게 되어"(롬 1:22). 기술은 늘어도, 눈은 그대로인 것입니다.A skilled hand and a blind heart in the same man. The problem is not his craft but his eyes. And so this disease is not cured by education. Romans says, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22). The skill improves; the eyes stay the same.

그리고 20절이 이 병의 마지막 단계를 보여 줍니다.And verse 20 shows us the final stage of this disease.

"그는 재를 먹고 미혹한 마음에 미혹되어서 스스로 그 영혼을 구원하지 못하며 나의 오른손에 거짓 것이 있지 아니하냐 하지도 못하느니라"(사 44:20)“He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, ‘Is there not a lie in my right hand?’” (Isaiah 44:20)

여기서 제일 무서운 말이 무엇입니까. "하지도 못하느니라"입니다. 지금 내 오른손에 있는 이것이 혹시 거짓이 아닌가 — 그 한 마디를 묻지 못합니다. 아니, 물을 생각조차 나지 않는 것입니다. 미혹된 마음이 그를 속여서, 의심 자체를 지워 버린 것입니다.What is the most terrifying phrase here? “He cannot say it.” Is this thing in my right hand perhaps a lie — he cannot ask that one question. No: it does not even occur to him to ask. The deluded heart has deceived him and erased the very possibility of doubt.

우상은 우리 손에 붙들리는 물건이 아닙니다. 오래 붙들고 있으면, 도리어 우리의 눈과 마음을 붙들어 버리는 것입니다.An idol is not an object our hand grips. Hold it long enough and it grips our eyes and our heart instead.

사람이 어떻게 이 자리까지 갑니까. 한 번에 가지 않습니다. 합리화의 계단을 밟아 내려가는 것입니다. 사람이 우상을 만들 때는 자기를 설득할 명분부터 만듭니다. 그런데 그 명분이 놀랍게도 대개 하나님의 이름으로 되어 있습니다.How does a person get to this place? Not in one step. He walks down a staircase of rationalizations. When a person makes an idol, he first manufactures a justification to convince himself. And astonishingly, that justification is usually made in God's name.

"나는 돈으로 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 것입니다." "나는 이 자리에 올라가서 하나님의 일을 할 것입니다." 말은 전부 하나님을 향해 있습니다. 그러나 마음이 실제로 향해 있는 곳은 돈이요, 자리요, 성공입니다.“I will glorify God with this money.” “I will climb to this position and do God's work there.” Every word points toward God. But where the heart actually points is money, position, success.

사울 왕이 그랬습니다. 아말렉을 진멸하라는 명령을 받고도 가장 좋은 양과 소를 남겨 두고서, 사무엘에게 이렇게 대답하였습니다.King Saul did exactly this. Commanded to devote Amalek to destruction, he kept back the best of the sheep and oxen, and answered Samuel this way:

"그것은 무리가 아말렉 사람에게서 끌어 온 것인데 백성이 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려 하여 양과 소의 가장 좋은 것을 남김이요"(삼상 15:15)“They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD your God.” (1 Samuel 15:15)

제사하려 하였다는 것입니다. 불순종을 예배로 포장한 것입니다. 사무엘의 진단을 들어 보시기 바랍니다.To sacrifice, he said. He wrapped disobedience in the packaging of worship. Listen to Samuel's diagnosis.

"이는 거역하는 것은 사술의 죄와 같고 완고한 것은 사신 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같음이라"(삼상 15:23)“For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.” (1 Samuel 15:23)

완고한 것은 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같다 — 하나님의 이름으로 포장한 내 고집을, 성경은 우상숭배라고 부르는 것입니다.Stubbornness is as the sin of idolatry — my own willfulness, wrapped in God's name, is what Scripture calls idol worship.

그런데 정말 무서운 것은 그 다음입니다. 포장을 오래 하다 보면, 어느 날부터는 자기가 그 포장을 정말로 믿어 버립니다. 처음에는 명분인 줄 알면서 말했는데, 나중에는 정말로 그렇게 믿는 것입니다. 거짓말이 진심이 되어 버린 것입니다. 주님은 말씀하셨습니다.But what comes next is truly frightening. Keep up the packaging long enough and one day you begin to believe the packaging yourself. At first you spoke it knowing it was a pretext; later you genuinely believe it. The lie has become sincerity. The Lord said:

"때가 이르면 무릇 너희를 죽이는 자가 생각하기를 이것이 하나님을 섬기는 예라 하리라"(요 16:2)“Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” (John 16:2)

하나님의 아들의 제자들을 죽이면서, 그것이 하나님을 섬기는 일이라고 진심으로 믿는 자리까지 사람이 갈 수 있습니다. 바로 그 자리가 20절입니다. 물을 수 없는 이유가 무엇입니까. 자기 안에서는 이미 그것이 '하나님을 위한 일'이 되어 있기 때문입니다.A person can go so far as to kill the disciples of God's Son and sincerely believe he is serving God. That is precisely the place verse 20 describes. Why can he not ask the question? Because within himself it has already become “a work for God.”

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그런데 이것이 남의 이야기입니까. 우리는 나무를 깎아 우상을 만들지는 않습니다. 우리는 주일마다 이 자리에서 하나님을 시인합니다. 그런데 성경에 이런 말씀이 있습니다.Dear brothers and sisters — but is this someone else's story? We do not carve idols out of wood. Every Lord's Day we confess God in this place. Yet Scripture says this:

"저희가 하나님을 시인하나 행위로는 부인하니 가증한 자요 복종치 아니하는 자요 모든 선한 일을 버리는 자니라"(딛 1:16)“They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.” (Titus 1:16)

하나님을 안다고 고백하는 사람들조차도 입의 증언과 삶의 증언이 갈라질 수 있다는 것입니다. 입으로는 "하나님이 모든 것을 다스리십니다" 고백하면서, 걱정은 모든 것이 운에 달린 사람처럼 합니다. 주님은 말씀하셨습니다.Even those who confess that they know God can have the testimony of their lips split from the testimony of their lives. With the mouth we confess, “God rules over everything,” while we worry like people for whom everything depends on luck. The Lord said:

"참새 두 마리가 한 앗사리온에 팔리는 것이 아니냐 그러나 너희 아버지께서 허락지 아니하시면 그 하나라도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라"(마 10:29)“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.” (Matthew 10:29)

참새 한 마리까지 아버지의 손 안에 있다고 정말 믿는다면, 그 사람의 걱정은 달라야 하지 않겠습니까. 물론 믿는 사람에게 걱정이 전혀 생기지 않는다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 다만 믿는 사람은 그 걱정을 혼자 붙들고 있지 않고, 그 걱정을 들고 아버지께로 돌아가는 것입니다.If we truly believe that even a single sparrow is in the Father's hand, should our worrying not look different? Of course this does not mean a believer never worries. It means the believer does not hold that worry alone, but carries it back to the Father.

시편은 말씀하십니다. "어리석은 자는 그 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 없다 하도다"(시 14:1). 입으로 하는 부인이 아니라, 삶으로 하는 부인이 있는 것입니다.The Psalm says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1). There is a denial made not with the lips but with the life.

우리가 주일의 고백과 월요일의 계산이 서로 다른 삶을 살아갈 때 — 그때 우리는 나무토막으로 만들어진 우상 없이도 우상의 증인석에 앉아 있는 것입니다.When Sunday's confession and Monday's calculations belong to two different lives — in that moment we are seated in the idol's witness box without ever having carved a block of wood.

그리고 9절은 그 증인석의 끝을 말씀합니다. "그러므로 수치를 당하리라." 우상은 자기 증인을 지켜 주지 못합니다. 사람이 만들어 낸 가짜이기 때문입니다. 17절에서 우상에게 부르짖던 그 기도에는 끝내 응답이 없었습니다.And verse 9 tells us how that witness box ends: “that they may be put to shame.” An idol cannot protect its own witnesses, because it is a counterfeit made by human hands. The prayer cried out to the idol in verse 17 was never answered.

그러므로 두 가지를 여쭙습니다.So I put two questions to you.

첫째, 내 오른손의 그것 — 내가 의지하고, 자랑하고, 차마 내려놓지 못하는 그것 — 을 향해 "혹시 거짓 아니냐" 물을 수 있습니까. 오늘 그 질문이 여러분 마음에 일어난다면, 그것은 여러분이 스스로 낸 용기가 아니라 성령께서 여러분 안에서 하시는 일입니다. 그러므로 그 질문이 살아 있는 자리가 은혜의 자리인 것입니다.First, that thing in your right hand — the thing you lean on, boast in, and cannot bring yourself to set down — can you ask it, “Are you perhaps a lie?” If that question rises in your heart today, it is not courage you produced yourself; it is the Holy Spirit at work within you. Where that question is still alive is a place of grace.

둘째, 이번 한 주간 나의 달력과 나의 걱정은 무엇을 증언하였습니까.Second, this past week, what did your calendar and your worries bear witness to?

제가 지은 건물도, 여러분이 평생 이루어 놓은 것도, 하나님께서 주신 좋은 선물입니다. 그러나 그것이 하나님의 자리를 차지하는 순간 우상이 되고, 우리를 사로잡는 그 우상성은 반드시 깨뜨려야 하는 것입니다. 하나님이 명하셔서 만들어진 모세의 놋뱀조차, 사람들이 분향하기 시작하자 히스기야가 부수며 "느후스단" 곧 놋조각이라 불렀습니다(왕하 18:4).The buildings I have built, and everything you have achieved in a lifetime, are good gifts from God. But the moment they occupy God's place they become idols, and the idolatry that captures us must be broken. Even Moses' bronze serpent, made at God's own command, was smashed by Hezekiah when the people began burning incense to it, and he called it “Nehushtan” — a piece of bronze (2 Kings 18:4).

경계선은 물건에 있지 않습니다. 우리 마음의 방향에 있는 것입니다.The boundary line is not in the object. It is in the direction of our heart.

3. 하나님은 말씀하시고 이루심으로 증인을 세우십니다

이제 마지막입니다. 그러면 하나님의 증인석에는 어떻게 서게 됩니까.Now the last point. How, then, does one come to stand in God's witness box?

8절을 다시 한번 통째로 들어 보시기 바랍니다.Listen once more to the whole of verse 8.

"너희는 두려워 말며 겁내지 말라 내가 예로부터 너희에게 들리지 아니하였느냐 고하지 아니하였느냐 너희는 나의 증인이라 나 외에 신이 있겠느냐 과연 반석이 없나니 다른 신이 있음을 알지 못하노라"(사 44:8)“Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.” (Isaiah 44:8)

이 말씀의 순서가 은혜입니다. 먼저 두려움을 만져 주시고 — "두려워 말며 겁내지 말라" — 그 근거를 대십니다. "내가 예로부터 너희에게 들리지 아니하였느냐, 고하지 아니하였느냐."The order of this word is grace itself. First he touches the fear — “Fear not, nor be afraid” — and then he gives the ground for it: “Have I not told you from of old and declared it?”

사랑하는 여러분, 여기에 증인의 자격이 적혀 있습니다. 하나님의 증인은 자기가 느낀 것을 말하는 사람이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 미리 말씀하셨고, 말씀하신 그대로 이루셨고, 그 말씀과 그 이루심을 받은 사람이 하나님의 증인입니다. 이사야 43장이 이것을 더 분명히 말씀합니다.Beloved, here is written the qualification of a witness. God's witness is not someone who reports what he felt. God's witness is one who received the word God spoke beforehand, and the fulfillment exactly as he spoke it. Isaiah 43 says this even more plainly.

"내가 고하였으며 구원하였으며 보였고 너희 중에 다른 신이 없었나니 그러므로 너희는 나의 증인이요 나는 하나님이니라"(사 43:12)“I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and I am God.” (Isaiah 43:12)

고하시고, 구원하시고, 보이셨습니다. 그러므로 증인인 것입니다. 그러니 우리의 증언은 "내가 이렇게 느꼈습니다"에서 시작하지 않습니다. 하나님이 무엇을 말씀하셨고, 그리스도 안에서 무엇을 이루셨는가 — 그것이 우리의 증언입니다.He declared, he saved, he proclaimed. Therefore you are witnesses. So our testimony does not begin with “this is how I felt.” What God has spoken, and what he has accomplished in Christ — that is our testimony.

우상의 증인은 보이는 것을 쥐고도 보지 못하는데, 하나님의 증인은 눈앞에 보이지 않아도 하나님이 말씀하시고 이루신 그 구원을 들었기에 목숨을 다해 증언하는 것입니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다. "그러므로 믿음은 들음에서 나며 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암았느니라"(롬 10:17).The idol's witness holds something visible and still cannot see; God's witness sees nothing before his eyes and yet testifies with his whole life, because he has heard the salvation God spoke and accomplished. Scripture says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

그런데 하나님은 들려주시는 데서 멈추지 않으십니다. 우리의 눈까지 고치십니다. 우리의 문제는 하나님을 향해 지음받은 마음이 사라진 것이 아니라, 그 마음이 다른 데로 굽어 있는 것이었습니다. 그렇다면 해법은 더 큰 증거가 아닙니다. 증거는 이미 충분합니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.But God does not stop at letting us hear. He heals our eyes as well. Our problem was never that the heart made for God had disappeared, but that it was bent toward something else. If so, the remedy is not more evidence. The evidence is already sufficient. Scripture says:

"어두운데서 빛이 비취리라 하시던 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 얼굴에 있는 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛을 우리 마음에 비취셨느니라"(고후 4:6)“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

천지를 창조하실 때 어둠을 향해 빛을 부르신 그 하나님이, 이번에는 우리 마음 안에 빛을 부르십니다. 보는 눈 자체를 새로 지으시는 것입니다.The same God who called light out of darkness at creation now calls light into our hearts. He creates the seeing eye itself anew.

그 빛은 우리 마음을 비추어, 무엇을 보게 합니까. 예수 그리스도의 얼굴입니다.And what does that light, shining into our hearts, let us see? The face of Jesus Christ.

그리고 증인이 증언할 내용을 주십니다. 22절입니다.And he gives the witness the content of his testimony. Here is verse 22.

"내가 네 허물을 빽빽한 구름의 사라짐 같이, 네 죄를 안개의 사라짐 같이 도말하였으니 너는 내게로 돌아오라 내가 너를 구속하였음이니라"(사 44:22)“I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:22)

순서를 보시기 바랍니다. "돌아오면 구속하겠다"가 아닙니다. "내가 너를 구속하였음이니라" — 이미 이루신 일입니다. 값은 치러졌고, 우리가 돌아옴은 그 결과입니다. 그 값이 무엇입니까. 베드로는 말씀합니다.Notice the order. It does not say, “Return, and I will redeem you.” It says, “I have redeemed you” — a finished work. The price has been paid, and our returning is the result. What was that price? Peter tells us.

"너희 조상의 유전한 망령된 행실에서 구속된 것은 은이나 금 같이 없어질 것으로 한 것이 아니요 오직 흠 없고 점 없는 어린양 같은 그리스도의 보배로운 피로 한 것이니라"(벧전 1:18–19)“You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” (1 Peter 1:18–19)

이 대조를 보시기 바랍니다. 사람은 은과 금으로 구원할 수 없는 신을 만들었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 은과 금이 아니라 아들의 피로 사람을 사신 것입니다.See the contrast. With silver and gold humanity manufactured a god that cannot save. But God purchased humanity — not with silver and gold, but with the blood of his Son.

8절 끝에 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "과연 반석이 없나니." 이사야가 반석이라 부르는 분은 여호와 하나님이십니다. 그런데 같은 장 6절에서 하나님은 자기를 이렇게 부르셨습니다. "나는 처음이요 나는 마지막이라 나 외에 다른 신이 없느니라"(사 44:6).At the end of verse 8 God says, “There is no Rock.” The one Isaiah calls the Rock is the LORD God. And in verse 6 of the same chapter God names himself: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god” (Isaiah 44:6).

그러면 요한계시록에서 그 이름을 누가 자기 이름으로 쓰십니까. "나는 처음이요 나중이니"(계 1:17) — 부활하신 예수 그리스도이십니다. 그래서 바울은 광야의 이스라엘을 두고 말씀합니다. "저희를 따르는 신령한 반석으로부터 마셨으매 그 반석은 곧 그리스도시라"(고전 10:4).So who takes that name as his own in the book of Revelation? “I am the first and the last” (Revelation 1:17) — the risen Jesus Christ. And so Paul says of Israel in the wilderness, “They drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).

요한계시록은 주님을 이렇게 소개합니다.Revelation introduces the Lord this way:

"또 충성된 증인으로 죽은 자들 가운데서 먼저 나시고 땅의 임금들의 머리가 되신 예수 그리스도 … 우리를 사랑하사 그의 피로 우리 죄에서 우리를 해방하시고"(계 1:5)“And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth … who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.” (Revelation 1:5)

충성된 증인 — 우리의 증언은 우리의 확신 위에 서 있지 않습니다. 죽기까지 신실하셨고 죽음에서 살아나신 그 충성된 증인 위에 서 있는 것입니다. 그래서 흔들리지 않는 것입니다.The faithful witness — our testimony does not rest on our own conviction. It rests on that faithful Witness who was faithful unto death and who rose from the dead. That is why it does not shake.

결론 — 증인의 노래

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 오늘 말씀을 정리합니다. 우상의 증인은 보지도 못하고 알지도 못하여 마침내 수치에 이릅니다. 하나님의 증인은 하나님이 말씀하시고 이루신 구원을 들었기에 두려움에 매이지 않습니다. 그리고 그 증언의 반석은 예수 그리스도이십니다.Dear brothers and sisters, let me gather up today's word. The idol's witnesses neither see nor know, and they come at last to shame. God's witnesses are not bound by fear, because they have heard the salvation God spoke and accomplished. And the Rock of that testimony is Jesus Christ.

이사야 44장이 어떻게 끝나는지 아십니까. 23절입니다.Do you know how Isaiah 44 ends? Here is verse 23.

"여호와께서 이 일을 행하셨으니 하늘아 노래할찌어다 땅의 깊은 곳들아 높이 부를찌어다 산들아 삼림과 그 가운데 모든 나무들아 소리내어 노래할찌어다 여호와께서 야곱을 구속하셨으니"(사 44:23)“Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it; shout, O depths of the earth; break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob.” (Isaiah 44:23)

찬양의 노래로 끝납니다. 구속받은 증인의 노래입니다. 우상의 증인석의 끝은 바닥이 없는 수치인데, 하나님의 증인석의 끝은 한계가 없는 노래인 것입니다.It ends with a song of praise — the song of the redeemed witness. The end of the idol's witness box is shame without a floor; the end of God's witness box is song without a limit.

어제 우리는 한 증인을 기억했습니다. 돌아가신 로렌스 형제님이십니다.Yesterday we remembered one such witness — our departed brother Lawrence.

우리 형제님은 목소리가 닫히고 손이 굳어 가는 중에도, 마지막 남은 힘으로 주님의 말씀에 "아멘"으로 화답하셨습니다. 그때 형제님의 눈앞에 무엇이 보였겠습니까. 회복도, 손에 잡히는 보증도 없었습니다. 보이는 것은 모두 희망의 반대편을 가리키고 있었습니다. 그런데도 형제님은 귀에 들린 하나님의 그 말씀 하나를 끝까지 붙드셨습니다.Even as his voice closed and his hands stiffened, our brother answered the Lord's word with “Amen” using the last strength he had. What was there before his eyes in that moment? No recovery, no guarantee he could hold in his hand. Everything visible pointed the opposite way from hope. And still he held to the end to that one word of God he had heard.

사랑하는 여러분, 그것이 증인의 자리입니다. 육신의 눈이 닫혀 가던 그 시간에, 마음의 눈은 오히려 밝았던 것입니다. 두려울 수밖에 없는 자리에서 "두려워 말며 겁내지 말라" 하신 그 음성을 들으셨고, 남은 힘 전부를 모아 "아멘" 한 마디로 증언하셨습니다.Beloved, that is the place of a witness. In the very hours when the eyes of his body were closing, the eyes of his heart were bright. In a place where fear was the only reasonable response, he heard the voice that said, “Fear not, nor be afraid,” and with all his remaining strength he testified in a single word: Amen.

사랑하는 여러분, 처음에 우리 마음이 수만 갈래 미로와 같고, 그 길 끝마다 우상이 서 있다고 말씀드렸습니다. 그런데 복음이 무엇입니까. 그 미로 한가운데로 주님이 친히 들어오셔서 말씀하신 것입니다.Beloved, at the beginning I said our hearts are a maze of ten thousand paths with an idol standing at the end of each one. So what is the gospel? The gospel is that the Lord himself walked into the middle of that maze and spoke.

"예수께서 가라사대 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라"(요 14:6)“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6)

우리가 수만 갈래 길을 다 헤매 보아야 하는 것이 아닙니다. 아버지께로 가는 길은 처음부터 오직 하나였고, 그 유일한 길이 사람이 되어 우리를 찾아오셨기 때문입니다.We do not have to wander down all ten thousand roads. From the beginning there was only one road to the Father, and that one road became a man and came looking for us.

이제 주님이 오늘 우리에게 물으십니다. 너는 어느 증인석에 서 있느냐.And now the Lord asks us today: In which witness box are you standing?

두려울 때 주님보다 먼저 손에 잡히는 그것을 내려놓으십시오. 그리고 온 몸으로 이 말씀을 들으시기 바랍니다. "너희는 두려워 말며 겁내지 말라 … 너희는 나의 증인이라"(사 44:8). 이미 우리의 죗값을 치러 주신 주님께서 말씀하십니다. "너는 내게로 돌아오라 내가 너를 구속하였음이니라"(사 44:22).Put down the thing your hand reaches for before it reaches for the Lord when you are afraid. And hear this word with your whole body: “Fear not, nor be afraid … and you are my witnesses” (Isaiah 44:8). The Lord who has already paid the price of our sin says, “Return to me, for I have redeemed you” (Isaiah 44:22).

오늘 우리는 주님의 그 부르심에 응답하여, 만져지는 것이 아니라 우리의 심령에 들려주신 말씀을 붙들고, 흔들리지 않는 반석 위에서 구속의 노래를 증언하며 사는 저와 여러분 되시기를 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 축원 드립니다. 아멘.May you and I answer that call today — holding not to what can be touched but to the word spoken into our hearts, and living as witnesses who sing the song of redemption upon the Rock that cannot be shaken. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I bless you. Amen.
