사랑하는 성도 여러분, 나이가 들면서 누구나 겪게 되는 일이 하나 있습니다. 어느 날 아침 신문을 펼쳤는데 글씨가 침침하고 흐릿하게 보입니다. 인쇄가 잘못된 것도 아니고 글자가 유독 작은 것도 아닌데, 두 글자를 채 이어 읽기가 어렵습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 어떻게 합니까? 신문사를 탓합니까? 아닙니다. 조용히 서랍을 열어 안경을 찾습니다. 그리고 안경을 쓰는 순간, 흐릿했던 글자가 또렷하게 눈에 들어옵니다.Dear brothers and sisters, there is something all of us come to experience as we grow older. One morning you open the newspaper and the print looks dim and blurred. Nothing is wrong with the printing, and the type is not unusually small — yet you cannot read two letters in a row. What do we do then? Do we blame the newspaper? No. We quietly open the drawer and look for our glasses. And the moment we put them on, the blurred letters come into focus.

여러분, 안경이 신문에 없던 글자를 새로 적어 넣어 준 것입니까? 아닙니다. 글자는 처음부터 거기 인쇄되어 있었습니다. 안경은 다만 흐려진 우리 눈에 그 글자가 온전히 보이도록 해 주었을 뿐입니다.Now, did the glasses write new letters into the paper that were not there before? No. The letters were printed there from the beginning. The glasses only made it possible for our dimmed eyes to see them fully.

오늘 우리 앞에는 신문이 아니라, 하나님께서 친히 일하고 계신 두 자리가 놓여 있습니다. 하나는 하나님께서 자신을 드러내신 '창조'라는 책이고, 또 하나는 하나님의 섭리 아래 내가 걸어온 자리, 곧 '내 인생'입니다. 하늘에는 그분의 영광이 분명하게 새겨져 있고, 내가 살아온 그 자리에는 단 한순간도 그분의 손길이 떠난 적이 없습니다. 그런데 우리 마음의 눈이 흐려져서, 하늘도 내 인생도 제대로 읽어 내지를 못합니다.Today what lies before us is not a newspaper but two places where God himself has been at work. One is the book called “creation,” in which God has revealed himself. The other is the road I have walked under God's providence — my own life. His glory is clearly inscribed upon the heavens, and not for one moment has his hand left the place where I have lived. Yet the eyes of our heart are dim, and so we read neither the heavens nor our own lives rightly.

그래서 하나님께서 흐려진 우리를 위해 건네주신 안경이 무엇입니까? 바로 성경, 하나님의 거룩한 말씀입니다. 오늘 우리는 육신의 시력이 아니라 마음의 눈을 함께 바라보고자 합니다. 시편 19편의 깊은 흐름을 따라가며, 우리 마음에 일어나는 네 가지 눈의 변화를 함께 나누겠습니다. 흐린 눈, 안경, 뜬 눈, 그리고 알아보는 눈입니다.So what are the glasses God has handed to us in our dimness? The Bible — God's holy Word. Today we will look not at the eyesight of the body but at the eyes of the heart. Following the deep movement of Psalm 19, we will share four changes of sight that take place in our hearts: the dim eye, the glasses, the opened eye, and the recognizing eye.

성경이 우리 눈을 밝혀 그리스도를 보게 하고, 그리스도를 알아본 눈이 비로소 이미 내 인생을 붙들고 계셨던 하나님을 알아봅니다.Scripture opens our eyes to see Christ; and the eye that has recognized Christ finally recognizes the God who was already holding my life.

첫째 — 흐린 눈

성경은 말씀합니다.Scripture says:

"하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그의 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다" (시편 19:1)“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)

하늘이 지금 무엇을 하고 있습니까? 선포하고 있습니다. 바로 지금 이 순간에도 쉬지 않고 웅장하게 외치고 있습니다. 이어서 시인은 이렇게 노래합니다.What are the heavens doing right now? Declaring. At this very moment they are crying out, majestically and without rest. The psalmist goes on to sing:

"언어도 없고 말씀도 없으며 들리는 소리도 없으나 그의 소리가 온 땅에 통하고 그의 말씀이 세상 끝까지 이르도다 하나님이 해를 위하여 하늘에 장막을 베푸셨도다" (시편 19:3–4)“There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun.” (Psalm 19:3–4)

육신의 귀에 들리는 소리는 없지만 그 장엄한 울림은 온 땅에 통하고, 저 드넓은 하늘 아래 해를 두셨다고 선포합니다. 말 없는 창조의 증인들입니다. 사도 바울 역시 같은 진리를 분명하게 선포합니다.No sound reaches the ear of the body, yet that majestic resonance goes out through all the earth, declaring that he has set the sun beneath the wide heavens. These are creation's wordless witnesses. The apostle Paul proclaims the same truth just as plainly.

"창세로부터 그의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이 그가 만드신 만물에 분명히 보여 알려졌나니 그러므로 그들이 핑계하지 못할지니라" (로마서 1:20)“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

성경을 보십시오. 분명히 보여 알려졌기 때문에 그 누구도 하나님 앞에서 핑계할 수 없다고 선언합니다. 그러니 사람이 하나님에 대해 아무것도 모르는 것이 아닙니다. 정말 아무것도 몰랐다면 핑계라도 댈 수 있겠지만, 성경은 결코 핑계할 수 없다고 단호하게 말씀합니다.Look at what Scripture declares: because it has been clearly perceived, no one can offer an excuse before God. So it is not that people know nothing about God. If they truly knew nothing, they could at least make an excuse — but Scripture says firmly that there is no excuse to be made.

그렇다면 왜 세상은 하나님께 이르지 못합니까? 하늘이 흐려서입니까? 별빛이 희미해서입니까? 증거가 부족해서입니까? 아닙니다. 하늘은 지금도 눈부시게 밝습니다. 문제는 보여 주는 쪽에 있지 않고 바라보는 우리 쪽에 있습니다. 등불이 어두운 것이 아니라 우리 눈이 흐려진 것입니다.Why then does the world not arrive at God? Is the sky too clouded? Is the starlight too faint? Is the evidence insufficient? No. The heavens are as dazzling as ever. The problem is not on the side that shows but on our side that looks. The lamp is not dim; our eyes are.

그런데 여러분, 여기서 한 걸음 더 깊이 보셔야 합니다. 흐린 눈은 아예 아무것도 보지 못하는 눈입니까? 아닙니다. 흐린 눈은 '헛것을 보는 눈'입니다. 안개 낀 길을 걷다 보면 저만치 사람이 서 있는 것 같아 불러 봅니다. 그러나 가까이 다가가 보면 그저 나무 한 그루일 뿐입니다. 없는 사람을 본 것입니다.But we must look one step deeper here. Is the dim eye an eye that sees nothing at all? No. The dim eye is an eye that sees things that are not there. Walking a fog-covered road, you think someone is standing off in the distance and you call out. But as you draw near it is only a tree. You saw a person who was not there.

사람은 참 하나님을 바르게 알지 못하면 가만히 멈추어 서 있지 않습니다. 스스로 우상을 만들어 세웁니다. 이 길로 가다 막히면 돌아서서 저 길로 가고, 거기서 또 막히면 또 다른 신을 세웁니다. 그렇게 마음속에 끝없는 미로가 생겨나고, 막다른 골목 끝마다 가짜 신을 하나씩 세워 두는 것입니다. 우물가의 사마리아 여인이 바로 그러했습니다. 주님과 마주 앉아 무엇을 두고 논쟁했습니까? 바로 산이었습니다.When a person does not rightly know the true God, he does not simply stand still. He manufactures an idol and sets it up. Blocked on this road, he turns and takes that one; blocked again, he erects yet another god. And so an endless maze forms in the heart, with a counterfeit god standing at the end of every dead end. The Samaritan woman at the well was exactly like this. Seated face to face with the Lord, what did she argue about? A mountain.

"우리 조상들은 이 산에서 예배하였는데 당신들의 말은 예배할 곳이 예루살렘에 있다 하더이다" (요한복음 4:20)“Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” (John 4:20)

그리심산이 그 여인의 막다른 골목이었습니다. 우리에게도 저마다 인생의 그런 산이 하나씩 자리 잡고 있지 않습니까?Mount Gerizim was that woman's dead end. Does each of us not have some such mountain lodged in our own life?

여러분, 그 산이 왜 막다른 골목입니까? 그 산에도 조상이 있었고, 제단이 있었고, 예배가 있었습니다. 몇백 년을 그렇게 올라갔습니다. 그런데 주님이 이 여인에게 무엇이라고 하셨습니까? "너희는 알지 못하는 것을 예배하고."Why is that mountain a dead end? There were ancestors on that mountain, and an altar, and worship. For centuries people climbed it. And what did the Lord say to this woman? “You worship what you do not know.”

길이 없어서 막다른 골목이 아닙니다. 길은 있었습니다. 그 길 끝에 하나님이 안 계셨던 것입니다. 열심히 걸어 올라가 놓고 정작 아무도 만나지 못하는 길 — 그것이 막다른 골목입니다.It is a dead end not because there was no road. There was a road. God simply was not at the end of it. A road you climb with all your strength only to meet no one at the top — that is a dead end.

그러니 눈이 흐리다는 말은 우리가 아무 생각도, 판단도 못 한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 우리는 여전히 생각하고, 판단하고, 열심을 냅니다. 열심이 없어서 문제가 아닙니다. 그 모든 열심으로 쉼 없이 걸어간 종착지가 결국 헛된 막다른 골목이었다는 사실이 문제입니다.So when we say the eye is dim, we do not mean we cannot think or judge at all. We still think, still judge, still put out great effort. Lack of zeal is not the problem. The problem is that the destination we reached with all that tireless effort turned out to be an empty dead end.

흐린 눈으로도 내 앞에 무언가 놓여 있다는 것은 압니다. 무언가 적혀 있다는 것도 압니다. 다만 두 글자를 바르게 이어 읽지 못할 뿐입니다. 그러면서도 스스로는 다 읽었다고 우깁니다. 이것이 바로 타락한 우리 눈의 실상입니다.Even a dim eye knows that something lies before it, and that something is written there. It simply cannot read two letters in a row correctly — and yet it insists that it has read the whole thing. That is the true condition of our fallen sight.

둘째 — 안경

그렇다면 하나님께서 우리를 이 흐린 눈 그대로 내버려 두셨습니까? 아닙니다. 시편 19편은 7절에 이르러 극적인 전환을 이룹니다. 1절부터 6절까지 웅장한 하늘을 노래하던 시인은, 7절에 이르러 전혀 다른 대상을 찬양하기 시작합니다.Did God then leave us with this dim sight as it was? No. At verse 7, Psalm 19 makes a dramatic turn. Having sung of the majestic heavens from verses 1 through 6, the psalmist begins at verse 7 to praise something entirely different.

"여호와의 율법은 완전하여 영혼을 소성시키며 여호와의 증거는 확실하여 우둔한 자를 지혜롭게 하며" (시편 19:7)“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7)

그리고 이어지는 구절에 오늘 설교의 핵심이 등장합니다.And in the verse that follows comes the heart of today's message.

"여호와의 교훈은 정직하여 마음을 기쁘게 하고 여호와의 계명은 순결하여 눈을 밝게 하시도다" (시편 19:8)“The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalm 19:8)

눈을 밝게 하시도다! 하늘을 노래하던 시인이 기록된 말씀으로 넘어오며, 바로 그 말씀이 우리 눈을 밝힌다고 고백합니다. 하나님께서 흐려진 우리 눈을 위해 친히 '말씀의 안경'을 건네주신 것입니다.Enlightening the eyes! The psalmist who was singing of the heavens moves to the written Word and confesses that this very Word gives light to our eyes. God himself has handed us the spectacles of his Word for our dimmed sight.

여기서 두 가지 사실을 마음에 꼭 새겨야 합니다.Two things must be engraved on our hearts here.

첫째, 안경은 본래 없던 글자를 지어내지 않습니다. 하늘에 새겨진 하나님의 영광은 처음부터 거기 있었습니다. 성경은 없던 것을 만들어 내는 책이 아니라, 우리 마음에 어지럽게 흩어져 읽히지 않던 하나님의 손길을 하나로 모아 또렷하게 보여 주는 책입니다.First, glasses do not invent letters that were never there. The glory of God inscribed on the heavens was there from the beginning. The Bible is not a book that manufactures what does not exist; it is a book that gathers into focus the hand of God that lay scattered and unreadable in our hearts.

둘째, 안경 없이는 눈앞에 무엇을 놓아 드려도 소용이 없습니다. 시력이 흐려진 분에게 아무리 큰 글씨로 인쇄한 신문을 드려도 돌아오는 대답은 "잘 안 보이네" 한마디뿐입니다.Second, without glasses it does no good to place anything before the eyes. Hand a person with failing sight a newspaper printed in the largest type you like, and the only answer that comes back is, “I still can't see it.”

그러니 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 하나님을 알기 위해 그저 하늘만 멍하니 올려다보지 마십시오. 자연에만 머무르지 마시고, 내 생각의 틀 속에 갇히지 마십시오. 성경을 펴십시오. 하나님께서 우리 흐린 눈을 위해 마련해 두신 안경이 바로 여기에 있습니다.So, beloved, do not simply gaze blankly up at the sky in order to know God. Do not stop at nature, and do not stay locked inside the frame of your own thinking. Open the Bible. Here are the glasses God has prepared for our dim eyes.

그런데 여러분, 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가야 합니다. 말씀은 단순히 자연을 바르게 읽어 내는 데서 멈추지 않습니다. 하늘이 결코 우리에게 말해 줄 수 없는 결정적인 진리가 하나 있습니다. 하늘은 창조주를 선포하지만, 구원자를 말해 주지는 못합니다. 밤하늘의 별을 아무리 오래 올려다보아도 거기에는 십자가가 없습니다.But we must go one step further. The Word does not stop at helping us read nature rightly. There is one decisive truth the heavens can never tell us. The heavens declare the Creator, but they cannot speak of the Savior. Gaze at the night stars as long as you like — there is no cross there.

그래서 하나님은 말씀을 통해 우리에게 한 분을 밝히 보여 주십니다. 말씀의 안경이 감당하는 궁극적인 사명은, 창조 세계를 또렷하게 해 준 뒤 마침내 우리를 바로 그 한 분 예수 그리스도 앞에 데려다 놓는 것입니다.And so through his Word God shows us one Person clearly. The ultimate task of the spectacles of the Word is this: after bringing the created world into focus, to set us at last before that one Person, Jesus Christ.

셋째 — 뜬 눈

그러나 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여기에 또 하나의 문제가 남습니다. 아무리 최고급 안경을 맞춰 드려도, 눈을 꼭 감고 있다면 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 안경은 흐려진 시력을 또렷하게 보정해 줄 수는 있어도, 감겨 있는 눈꺼풀을 스스로 뜨게 하지는 못합니다.But beloved, one more problem remains. However fine the spectacles you are fitted with, what good are they if your eyes are shut tight? Glasses can correct blurred vision into focus, but they cannot open an eyelid that is closed.

그래서 우리에게는 또 한 분의 손길이 반드시 필요합니다. 부활하신 주님께서 엠마오로 내려가던 두 제자에게 행하신 일을 보십시오.So we absolutely need the touch of another. See what the risen Lord did for the two disciples going down to Emmaus.

"이에 그들의 마음을 열어 성경을 깨닫게 하시고" (누가복음 24:45)“Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45)

주님께서 친히 그들의 마음을 열어 주셨습니다. 주님은 밖에서 성경을 설명해 주시는 데서 그치지 않으시고, 안에서 그들의 굳은 마음을 열어 주셨습니다. 밖에서 말씀이 열리고 안에서 마음이 열려야 비로소 성경의 비밀이 온전히 열립니다. 사도 바울 역시 우리를 위해 바로 이 기도를 드렸습니다.The Lord himself opened their minds. He did not stop at explaining the Scriptures from the outside; he opened their hardened hearts from within. Only when the Word is opened outwardly and the heart is opened inwardly is the secret of Scripture fully opened. The apostle Paul prayed exactly this prayer for us.

"우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님, 영광의 아버지께서 지혜와 계시의 영을 너희에게 주사 하나님을 알게 하시고 너희 마음의 눈을 밝히사 그의 부르심의 소망이 무엇이며 성도 안에서 그 기업의 영광의 풍성함이 무엇이며" (에베소서 1:17–18)“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:17–18)

너희 마음의 눈을 밝히사! 시편 19편 8절의 "눈을 밝게 하시도다"라는 찬양이, 사도 바울의 "마음의 눈을 밝히사"라는 간구로 그대로 이어집니다. 성령께서 우리 안에서 행하시는 일이 바로 이것입니다.Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened! The praise of Psalm 19:8 — “enlightening the eyes” — carries straight over into Paul's petition, “having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.” This is precisely the work the Holy Spirit does within us.

그렇다면 그렇게 마음의 눈이 열렸을 때 무엇이 보입니까? 사마리아 여인을 다시 보십시오. 이 여인은 성경 지식이 없던 사람이 아닙니다. 조상의 전통도 알았고, 예배하던 산도 있었으며, 심지어 메시아를 기다리기까지 했습니다. 그런데도 주님은 그녀에게 "너희는 알지 못하는 것을 예배한다"고 지적하셨습니다. 그러다 마침내 그녀의 눈이 열립니다. 무엇을 보았습니까?So when the eyes of the heart are opened in that way, what comes into view? Look again at the Samaritan woman. She was not a person without religious knowledge. She knew her ancestors' tradition, she had a mountain of worship, she was even waiting for the Messiah. And still the Lord told her, “You worship what you do not know.” Then at last her eyes are opened. What did she see?

"예수께서 이르시되 네게 말하는 내가 그라 하시니라" (요한복음 4:26)“Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am he.’” (John 4:26)

내가 그라! 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 이것은 문제의 정답 하나를 가르쳐 주신 장면이 아닙니다. 요한복음이 태초부터 증언하고자 했던 그 영광스러운 하나님이 지금 한 여인 바로 앞에 서 계신 것입니다.I am he! Beloved, this is not a scene in which the correct answer to a question is supplied. The glorious God whom John's Gospel has been testifying to from the beginning is now standing directly in front of one woman.

눈이 열린 사람에게 무엇이 보이는지 요한복음이 계속해서 증언합니다. 주님은 친히 선언하셨습니다.John's Gospel keeps testifying to what the opened eye sees. The Lord himself declared:

"예수께서 이르시되 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 아브라함이 나기 전부터 내가 있느니라 하시니" (요한복음 8:58)“Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.’” (John 8:58)

그리고 요한복음의 끝자락에서 제자 도마는 그분 앞에 엎드려 "나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다" 하고 고백합니다.And near the end of John's Gospel the disciple Thomas falls before him and confesses, “My Lord and my God!”

보십시오. "내가 그라" 말씀하신 주님이 누구십니까? 아브라함보다 먼저 계신 분이며, 제자가 무릎을 꿇고 "나의 하나님"이라 부를 수밖에 없는 바로 그 하나님이십니다. 주님은 말씀과 표적을 통해 끊임없이 자신이 누구신지를 드러내셨습니다. "내가 그라" 선언하실 때마다, 병자를 고치시고 죽은 자를 일으키실 때마다 자신이 참 하나님이심을 보여 주셨습니다. 성경이 우리 눈을 밝히는 궁극적인 목적은 바로 그분을 알아보게 하기 위함입니다.Look. Who is this Lord who said, “I am he”? He is the one who existed before Abraham, the very God before whom a disciple must fall on his knees and say, “My God.” Through his words and his signs the Lord unceasingly revealed who he is. Every time he declared “I am,” every time he healed the sick and raised the dead, he showed that he is the true God. The ultimate purpose of Scripture's enlightening of our eyes is that we would recognize him.

눈이 열렸을 때 보이는 것은 차가운 교리나 도덕적 교훈이 아닙니다. 성경의 모든 말씀이 한결같이 가리키고 있던 단 한 분, 바로 살아 계신 예수 그리스도이십니다.What comes into view when the eyes are opened is not cold doctrine or moral instruction. It is the one Person to whom every word of Scripture has been pointing all along — the living Jesus Christ.

그렇다면 "내가 그라" 하셨던 그 '나'는 누구십니까?So then, who is the “I” in “I am he”?

성경은 우리에게 "막연한 어떤 신을 예배하라"고 말하지 않습니다. 성경은 오직 한 분을 똑똑히 가리키고 있으며, 바로 그 한 분께서 친히 우리 앞에 입을 여십니다.Scripture does not tell us to “worship some vague deity.” Scripture points unmistakably to one Person, and that one Person opens his mouth before us himself.

"네게 말하는 내가 바로 그라."“I who speak to you am he.”

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 이것은 하나님에 대해 설명해 주는 교리 강의가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 자기 자신을 직접 나타내 보이신 선언입니다. 막연한 신을 찾아 헤매라는 것이 아니라, "내가 바로 너희가 예배할 그 하나님이다"라고 밝히신 것입니다.Beloved, this is not a doctrinal lecture explaining God. It is God's own declaration in which he shows himself. He is not sending us off to wander in search of some vague deity; he is making it plain: “I am the very God you are to worship.”

하나님은 말 없는 하늘의 증언 속에만 우리를 남겨 두지 않으셨습니다. 친히 육신을 입고 우리 곁으로 찾아오셔서, 당신의 입을 열어 말씀해 주셨습니다.God did not leave us with only the wordless testimony of the heavens. He took on flesh himself, came to our side, and opened his mouth and spoke to us.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 그러므로 성경을 펼치기 전에 우리가 가장 먼저 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 마음의 눈을 열어 달라고 구하는 것입니다. 이것은 단순한 습관이 아니라, 우리의 가장 간절한 기도가 되어야 합니다.Beloved, therefore there is something we must do first, before we open the Bible: ask him to open the eyes of our heart. This must not be a mere habit; it must become our most earnest prayer.

넷째 — 알아보는 눈

Until now we have been speaking of my looking at God — a journey of grace in which the dim eye puts on glasses and, by the Spirit, the heart is opened to see Christ.

그런데 시편 기자의 놀라운 고백이 바로 여기에 등장합니다. 하늘을 힘차게 노래하고 율법의 완전함을 찬양하던 시인이, 돌연 시선을 어디로 돌립니까? 바로 자기 자신입니다.And here the psalmist's astonishing confession appears. Having sung powerfully of the heavens and praised the perfection of the law, where does the psalmist suddenly turn his gaze? To himself.

"자기 허물을 능히 깨달을 자 누구리요 나를 숨은 허물에서 벗어나게 하소서" (시편 19:12)“Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.” (Psalm 19:12)

이 순서를 결코 놓쳐서는 안 됩니다. 이 고백이 어디에 놓여 있습니까? 바로 말씀 단락 바로 뒤입니다. 시인은 처음부터 자신이 스스로를 제대로 보지 못한다는 사실을 알고 있었던 것이 아닙니다. 말씀의 안경을 쓰고 하나님을 대면하고 나서야, 비로소 자기가 자기 자신을 철저히 잘못 읽고 있었다는 사실을 깨달은 것입니다.We must never miss this order. Where does this confession stand? Immediately after the section on the Word. The psalmist did not know from the start that he could not see himself rightly. Only after putting on the spectacles of the Word and coming face to face with God did he realize that he had been thoroughly misreading himself.

서론에서 말씀드린 두 자리가 여기서 다시 만납니다. 앞에는 하늘이라는 책이 있고, 뒤에는 내가 살아온 자리가 있습니다. 그리고 그 한가운데에 말씀이 놓여 있습니다. 하늘도 안경 없이는 바르게 읽지 못하고, 내 인생 역시 말씀의 안경 없이는 결코 바르게 해석할 수 없습니다.The two places I mentioned in the introduction meet again here. Before us is the book of the heavens; behind us is the road we have walked. And in the middle stands the Word. Without the glasses we cannot read the heavens rightly, and without the glasses of the Word we can never rightly interpret our own lives.

그리고 여기서 방향이 완전히 뒤집힙니다. 성경은 단순히 내가 말씀을 읽는 행위에 머물지 않습니다.And here the direction reverses entirely. Scripture does not remain merely an act of my reading the Word.

"하나님의 말씀은 살아 있고 활력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하나니 지으신 것이 하나도 그 앞에 나타나지 않음이 없고 우리의 결산을 받으실 이의 눈 앞에 만물이 벌거벗은 것 같이 드러나느니라" (히브리서 4:12–13)“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13)

내가 성경을 읽고 판단하는 줄 알았는데, 살아 있는 말씀이 나를 꿰뚫어 읽고 계셨습니다. 심판대 앞에 선 것처럼 내 모든 중심이 벌거벗겨지듯 드러난 것입니다.I thought I was the one reading and judging Scripture — but the living Word was reading straight through me. As though standing before the judgment seat, everything at my center was laid bare.

말씀 앞에서 그렇게 벌거벗겨진 사람이 사마리아 우물가에 있었습니다. 그 여인이 동네로 뛰어가 무어라 외쳤습니까?There was such a person, laid bare before the Word, at the Samaritan well. What did she run into town crying out?

"내가 행한 모든 일을 내게 말한 사람을 와서 보라 이는 그리스도가 아니냐 하니" (요한복음 4:29)“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” (John 4:29)

그분이 내가 살아온 모든 삶을 읽으셨습니다! 시편 기자는 "자기 허물을 능히 깨달을 자 누구리요" 탄식했습니다. 그 절박한 물음의 해답이 바로 우물가에 서 계셨습니다. 나는 나를 온전히 읽지 못하지만, 그분은 내 모든 것을 완벽하게 읽고 계셨습니다.He read the whole of the life I have lived! The psalmist cried, “Who can discern his errors?” The answer to that desperate question was standing at the well. I cannot read myself completely — but he was reading all of me perfectly.

여인은 그날 무엇을 깨달았습니까? 자신이 평생 숨기며 부끄러워했던 고단한 과거가 이분 앞에는 단 하나도 감추어져 있지 않다는 사실을 알았습니다. 그리고 요한은 이 사건의 서두에서 이미 중요한 사실을 밝혀 두었습니다. 주님이 "사마리아를 통과하여야 하겠다" 작정하셨다는 점입니다. 여인이 물을 길으러 나온 바로 그 시각에 주님이 우물가에 앉아 계셨던 것은 결코 우연의 일치가 아니었습니다. 주님은 바로 이 여인을 만나시기로 작정하시고 길을 떠나셨던 것입니다.What did the woman realize that day? That the weary past she had spent a lifetime hiding in shame was not hidden from him in even one detail. And John had already made something important clear at the opening of this account: the Lord had determined that “he had to pass through Samaria.” That the Lord was sitting at the well at the very hour she came out to draw water was no coincidence at all. He had set out on that road having determined to meet this very woman.

그러므로 주님이 이날 그녀를 처음 아신 것이 아닙니다. 주님은 이미 이 여인을 아시고 만나시고자 길을 떠나셨습니다. 다만 이 여인이 비로소 그날 주님을 처음 알아본 것입니다. 그리고 이것이 오늘 네 번째 눈, 곧 '알아보는 눈'입니다. 이것은 본래 없던 것을 찾아내는 눈이 아니라, 이미 내 삶에 찾아와 계셨던 주님을 비로소 알아채는, 성령의 역사로 그리스도를 만나 뜨여진 눈입니다.So it was not on that day that the Lord first knew her. He already knew this woman and set out to meet her. It was she who, on that day, first recognized him. And this is today's fourth eye — the recognizing eye. It is not an eye that discovers something that was never there, but an eye opened by the work of the Spirit in meeting Christ, which finally perceives the Lord who had already come into my life.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여기서 우리가 분명하게 붙들어야 할 진리가 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻이 내 인생에 미치지 않는 순간은 단 하나도 없습니다. 그리고 그 뜻이 마침내 어느 방향을 향해 가고 있는지를 성경은 분명하게 선포합니다.Beloved, here is a truth we must hold firmly. There is not one moment of my life that God's will does not reach. And Scripture declares plainly the direction in which that will is finally moving.

"우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라" (로마서 8:28)“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

"우리가 알거니와." 짐작한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 분명히 확신한다는 선언입니다. 그리고 하나님의 선하신 다스림이 미치는 범위는 바로 "모든 것"입니다. 우리의 눈물과 아픔, 억울함까지도 단 하나 빼놓지 않으십니다.“We know.” This does not mean we guess. It is a declaration of firm certainty. And the reach of God's good rule is precisely “all things” — our tears, our pain, even our injustices; he leaves not one of them out.

때로는 하나님께서 그 깊은 이유까지도 깨닫게 하십니다. 요셉이 메마른 구덩이에 던져졌을 때 그 뜻을 알았겠습니까? 노예로 팔려 갈 때, 억울하게 감옥에 갇혔을 때 그 이유를 알았겠습니까? 아닙니다. 전혀 몰랐습니다.At times God even lets us understand the deeper reason. When Joseph was thrown into the dry pit, did he know the purpose? When he was sold as a slave, when he was unjustly imprisoned, did he know the reason? No. He had no idea.

세월이 한참 흐른 뒤, 자신을 팔아넘겨 두려움에 떨고 있는 형들 앞에 서서야 비로소 하나님의 구원의 원대하신 뜻을 알아본 것입니다. 형들의 배신과 악행마저도 수많은 생명을 살리시려는 하나님의 거대한 섭리 안에 있었음을 요셉은 고백하는 것입니다.Only long years later, standing before the brothers who had sold him and were now trembling in fear, did he recognize the vast saving purpose of God. Joseph confesses that even his brothers' betrayal and evil lay within God's immense providence to keep many people alive.

"하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나이다."“God sent me before you to preserve life.”

하나님이 우리의 그 고난의 자리에 계시지 않았던 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 언제나 우리 옆에서 일하고 계셨지만, 그때는 아직 우리 눈에 그 손길이 읽히지 않았을 뿐입니다. 사도 요한은 복음서를 갈무리하며 기록 목적을 분명히 밝힙니다.It is not that God was absent from the place of our suffering. God was always at work beside us; it is only that at the time our eyes could not yet read his hand. The apostle John, closing his Gospel, states his purpose in writing plainly.

"예수께서 제자들 앞에서 이 책에 기록되지 아니한 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨으나 오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라" (요한복음 20:30–31)“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30–31)

요한이 복음서를 기록한 목적은 단순히 책장을 채우기 위함이 아닙니다. 이 기록을 통해 성도들의 삶 한가운데서 믿음이 일어나고 생명이 약동하게 하려는 것입니다. 성경은 책 속에 갇혀 있는 활자가 아니라, 처음부터 성도의 삶이라는 현장을 향해 기록된 생명의 말씀입니다.John did not write his Gospel simply to fill pages. He wrote so that faith would rise and life would pulse in the middle of believers' lives. Scripture is not type locked inside a book; from the very beginning it is the word of life written toward the actual ground of the believer's life.

다만 두 가지는 분명히 기억하셔야 합니다.But two things must be clearly remembered.

첫째, 내 삶의 경험이 성경 말씀 자체를 대신할 수는 없습니다. 안경을 통해 글자를 읽는 것이지, 내 눈맛에 맞추어 안경의 도수를 마음대로 고쳐 쓰는 것이 아닙니다.First, the experience of my life can never replace the Word of Scripture itself. We read the letters through the glasses; we do not adjust the prescription of the glasses to suit our own taste.

둘째, 하나님의 뜻을 알려 주시는 것은 오직 하나님의 주권적인 자유입니다. 어떤 일은 그 이유까지 깨닫게 하시고, 어떤 일은 끝내 침묵하십니다. 그러니 우리가 억지로 하나님의 뜻을 캐내려 해서는 안 됩니다. 하나님이 알려 주신 것과 내가 짐작한 것을 분별해야 하며, 그 분별의 유일한 기준은 내 주관적 확신이 아니라 오직 기록된 말씀입니다.Second, whether God reveals his purpose is entirely his sovereign freedom. For some matters he grants us the reason; about others he remains silent to the end. So we must not force God's will out of hiding. We must distinguish what God has revealed from what I have guessed, and the only standard for that discernment is not my subjective certainty but the written Word alone.

그러므로 우리는 "그때 그 고난이 왜 나에게 일어났는가"에 대한 모든 해답을 지금 다 알아내지는 못합니다. 그러나 이것 하나만큼은 확신할 수 있습니다. 우리는 결코 차가운 우연의 세상에 내던져진 존재가 아니라, 나를 구원하시고자 독생자까지 아낌없이 내어 주신 하나님의 신실하신 손안에 살아가고 있다는 사실입니다.So we will not now discover every answer to “why did that suffering come to me then?” But of this one thing we can be certain: we are not beings flung into a cold world of chance, but people living in the faithful hand of the God who did not spare even his only Son in order to save us.

그리스도를 알아본 눈으로 지나온 세월을 다시 돌아보십시오. 내가 주님을 알지 못했던 그 어두운 순간에도 나는 단 한 번도 그분의 손 밖으로 벗어난 적이 없었습니다. 하나님이 계시지 않았던 것이 아니라, 우리 눈이 흐려져 보지 못했을 뿐입니다.Look back over the years with an eye that has recognized Christ. Even in those dark moments when I did not know the Lord, I never once slipped outside his hand. It is not that God was absent; it is that our eyes were dim and could not see.

결론

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 우리가 함께 나눈 네 가지 눈의 은혜를 마음에 다시 새겨 보십시오.Beloved, engrave once more on your hearts the grace of the four eyes we have shared today.

하늘은 쉬지 않고 하나님의 영광을 웅장하게 선포하고 있었지만, 우리는 그 음성을 비틀어 읽으며 헛된 우상 속을 헤매었습니다. 우리의 눈이 심히 흐려져 있었기 때문입니다.The heavens were declaring the glory of God majestically and without rest, yet we misread that voice and wandered among empty idols — because our eyes were terribly dim.

그리하여 긍휼의 하나님께서는 흐려진 우리를 내버려 두지 않으시고, 성경이라는 거룩한 말씀의 안경을 친히 건네주셨습니다.And so the God of mercy did not leave us in our dimness but handed us himself the holy spectacles of his Word, the Scriptures.

나아가 성령 하나님께서 굳게 닫혀 있던 우리 마음의 눈을 활짝 열어 밝혀 주셨을 때, 우리는 비로소 성경이 가리키는 단 한 분, 살아 계신 구원자 예수 그리스도를 온전히 바라보게 되었습니다.Further, when God the Holy Spirit threw open and enlightened the tightly shut eyes of our hearts, we at last saw fully the one Person to whom Scripture points — the living Savior, Jesus Christ.

그리고 마침내 깊이 깨달았습니다. 내가 주님을 찾기도 전에, 그분께서 이미 신실하신 은혜로 내 지나온 전 생애를 한순간도 빠짐없이 품고 계셨다는 그 놀라운 사랑을 비로소 알아보게 된 것입니다.And finally we understood deeply: before I ever sought the Lord, he had already, in faithful grace, been holding every moment of my whole past life. That astonishing love is what we have come to recognize.

이 구원의 여정 가운데 우리가 스스로 시작한 것이 과연 단 하나라도 있습니까? 광대한 하늘을 펴신 분이 누구십니까? 하나님이십니다. 눈을 밝히는 말씀을 주신 분이 누구십니까? 하나님이십니다. 굳은 마음을 열어 눈을 뜨게 하신 분이 누구십니까? 성령 하나님이십니다. 그리고 내 비틀거리던 인생을 먼저 찾아와 읽고 계셨던 분이 누구십니까? 바로 우리 주 예수 그리스도이십니다.In this whole journey of salvation, is there even one thing we began ourselves? Who stretched out the vast heavens? God. Who gave the Word that enlightens the eyes? God. Who opened the hardened heart and made the eyes see? God the Holy Spirit. And who came first to my stumbling life and was reading it? Our Lord Jesus Christ.

사마리아 여인이 먼저 주님을 찾아간 것이 아닙니다. 그저 목이 말라 물 한 동이를 길으러 나왔을 뿐입니다. 성경은 증언합니다.The Samaritan woman did not go looking for the Lord first. She simply came out thirsty, to draw a jar of water. Scripture testifies:

"사마리아를 통과하여야 하겠는지라" (요한복음 4:4)“And he had to pass through Samaria.” (John 4:4)

그곳이 어떤 자리였습니까? 유대인이 사마리아인과 상종조차 하지 않던 자리였습니다. 사람들이 차가운 경계를 긋고 서로 등을 돌리던 그 막다른 골목으로, 주님은 반드시 통과하여야 하겠다 하시며 찾아가셨습니다. 왜 그러셨습니까? 거기 만나기로 작정하신 사람이 있었기 때문입니다. 그리고 한 여인의 회복으로 시작하여 온 동네를 구원의 빛으로 물들이셨습니다.What kind of place was that? A place where Jews would not so much as associate with Samaritans. Into that dead end, where people drew cold boundaries and turned their backs on one another, the Lord went, saying he had to pass through. Why? Because there was someone there he had determined to meet. And beginning with the restoration of one woman, he flooded an entire town with the light of salvation.

그 여인이 자기 힘으로 그 어둠에서 빠져나온 것이 아닙니다. 주님이 그 어둠의 길 한복판으로 걸어 들어오셨습니다. 여러분의 고단한 인생길에도 주님이 그렇게 찾아오셨습니다. 그리고 그 걸음의 끝에서 우리를 위해 십자가를 지셨습니다.That woman did not climb out of the darkness by her own strength. The Lord walked into the middle of that dark road. He came to your weary road in just the same way. And at the end of that walk he took up the cross for us.

이번 한 주간, 세 가지 결단을 가슴에 깊이 품고 삶의 자리로 나아가시기 바랍니다.This coming week, go out into the places of your life holding three resolutions deep in your heart.

첫째, 성경을 펴기 전에 먼저 엎드려 기도하십시오. 성경은 인간의 지혜나 지식으로 열리는 책이 아닙니다. 시편 기자와 함께 "내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서" 엎드리며, 마음의 눈을 밝혀 주시기를 성령 하나님께 먼저 간절히 구하십시오.First, kneel and pray before you open the Bible. Scripture is not a book opened by human wisdom or knowledge. Bow with the psalmist — “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law” — and first ask God the Holy Spirit earnestly to enlighten the eyes of your heart.

둘째, 하늘과 만물을 바라볼 때마다 창조주의 신실하심을 기억하십시오. 육신의 귀에는 침묵하는 듯 보여도, 저 드넓은 하늘과 피조세계 속에서 하나님의 웅장한 영광은 지금 이 순간에도 쉼 없이 선포되고 있습니다.Second, whenever you look at the sky and all created things, remember the faithfulness of the Creator. Though it seems silent to the ear of the body, God's majestic glory is being declared without rest at this very moment through the wide heavens and the whole creation.

셋째, 말씀이라는 안경을 쓰고 지나온 삶의 자리를 다시 읽어 내십시오. 실수와 상처투성이인 줄만 알았던 고단한 시간 속에서도, 내 삶의 단 한순간조차 주님의 신실하신 손길 밖으로 벗어난 적이 없었음을 비로소 또렷이 알아보게 될 것입니다.Third, put on the spectacles of the Word and read again the places of life you have already walked. Even in those weary seasons you thought were nothing but mistakes and wounds, you will finally see clearly that not one moment of your life ever fell outside the Lord's faithful hand.

시편 기자가 이 위대한 찬가를 어떻게 마무리합니까?How does the psalmist close this great hymn?

"나의 반석이시요 나의 구속자이신 여호와여 내 입의 말과 마음의 묵상이 주님 앞에 열납되기를 원하나이다" (시편 19:14)“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

하늘의 영광을 우러러보고, 말씀의 완전함 앞에 눈을 뜨며, 자신의 숨은 허물을 발견한 시인은 마침내 구속자 앞에 온전히 무릎을 꿇습니다.Having looked up at the glory of the heavens, having had his eyes opened before the perfection of the Word, and having discovered his own hidden faults, the psalmist at last kneels fully before his Redeemer.

오늘 우리 모두에게 이 은혜가 임하기를 소망합니다. 흐려진 우리 눈에 말씀의 안경을 씌우시고, 성령으로 마음의 눈을 밝혀 주시며, 마침내 우리를 먼저 찾아오신 십자가의 그 손길을 또렷이 알아보는 복된 성도님들이 다 되시기를 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 간절히 축원합니다. 아멘.I long for this grace to come upon all of us today. May God set the spectacles of his Word upon our dimmed eyes, enlighten the eyes of our hearts by the Spirit, and make every one of you blessed saints who clearly recognize the hand of the cross that came seeking us first.
