The car is fine and fast, but where is it going? What matters in our life: going fast, or being on the right road? Today we look at three feet together: the foot that lost its way, the foot that stands before the lamp, and the foot that finally turned back.

Our hearts carry three diseases: they forget so easily, they lean so easily, and they invent a god of their own making.

That labyrinth is inside our own hearts (Jer. 17:9). A map drawn inside the labyrinth cannot lead us out. The thread of salvation must come from outside. That is the Word of God.

The one who carries a lamp does not run but walks step by step, and those steps gather into a day, a year, and a lifetime's road in the Lord who is the Way.

The world envies the first, but God looks not at speed but at which road the feet are on. Limping is not failure. Losing the road is the problem.

Even when prayer is not as fervent as before, as long as you do not leave your seat before the Word, you are still walking toward the Lord. Caleb at eighty-five could ask for the hill country because his legs still stood within the road of the promise.

Repentance (metanoia) is the changing of mind and heart; turning back (epistrepho) is changing direction and returning. Like the psalmist, to think on our ways, turn our feet, and come back to the Word is repentance (Ps. 119:59). And repentance is not a one-time event but the saint's daily life of checking our steps each morning before the Word.

It is all right to limp — stay in Christ. It is all right to be slow. It is all right to fall and rise again. The Lord who is the Way walks with you.

서론 — 경로를 이탈하셨습니다
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 요즘은 운전을 할 때 누구나 내비게이션을 켜고 다닙니다. 길을 몰라도 걱정이 없습니다. 기계가 다 알려주기 때문입니다. 그런데 여러분, 이런 운전자를 한번 상상해 보십시오. 내비게이션이 계속해서 "경로를 이탈하셨습니다"라고 알려주는데도, 그 소리를 들은 척도 하지 않고 오히려 가속 페달을 더 깊이 밟는 운전자입니다. 차는 좋은 차입니다. 속도도 빠릅니다. 기름도 가득합니다. 그런데 그 차는 지금 어디로 가고 있는 것입니까? 제대로 가고 있는 것이겠습니까?Beloved brothers and sisters, these days when we drive, everyone turns on the navigation. Even if we do not know the way, we have no worry, because the machine tells us everything. But imagine, dear friends, a driver like this: the navigation keeps announcing, “You have left the route,” yet he acts as if he hears nothing and instead presses the accelerator even harder. The car is a fine car. It is fast. The tank is full. But where is that car going right now? Is it really going the right way?
과연 우리 인생에 빨리 가는 것이 중요합니까, 아니면 제대로 올바른 길 위에 있는 것이 중요합니까? 동쪽으로 가야 하는데 서쪽을 향해 달리고 있으면 과연 내가 가고자 하는 곳에 갈 수 있겠습니까?What truly matters in our life: going fast, or being on the right road? If I must go east but I am racing toward the west, can I ever arrive where I mean to go?
지난주에 우리는 하나님께서 세상과 우리의 인생 속에서 일하고 계신다는 것을 보았습니다. 그렇다면 이제 우리에게 남는 질문은 하나입니다. 나는 지금 하나님께서 빛을 비추시는 올바른 길 위에 서 있는가 하는 것입니다.Last week we saw that God is at work in the world and in our lives. Then one question remains for us: am I standing right now on the right road where God is shining his light?

The foot that stands before the lamp. And the foot that finally turned back. May these three feet become your own story today.
본론 1 — 길 잃은 발
먼저 성경은 우리의 발걸음이 어디를 향하고 있다고 말씀하십니까?First, where does the Bible say our footsteps are headed?
성경은 말씀하십니다.The Scripture says:
"우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 무리의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다" 이사야 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6
"각기 제 길로 갔거늘."“We have turned, every one, to his own way.”
여러분, 이것이 하나님을 떠난 인간의 모습입니다. 양은 사나운 짐승이 아닙니다. 양은 목자에게 반역하겠다고 이를 갈며 도망가는 짐승도 아닙니다. 양은 그저 눈앞의 풀 한 포기를 따라 한 걸음, 또 한 걸음 고개를 떨구고 옮기는 것입니다. 그러다가 문득 고개를 들면, 이미 목자의 품을 아득히 벗어나 있는 것입니다.Dear friends, this is the picture of man apart from God. A sheep is not a fierce animal. A sheep is not a beast that grinds its teeth and runs away in rebellion against the shepherd. A sheep simply follows one tuft of grass before its eyes, head down, one step, then another step. And when at last it lifts its head, it has already wandered far, far from the shepherd's arms.
우리의 마음이 꼭 그렇습니다. 우리의 마음에는 세 가지 병이 있습니다.Our hearts are exactly like that. Our hearts carry three diseases.
첫째, 우리의 마음은 모든 것을 잘 잊어버립니다. 하나님의 은혜를 받을 때는 눈물을 흘리다가도, 일주일이 지나면, 아니 하루가 지나면 까맣게 잊어버리는 것입니다.First, our hearts forget everything so easily. We shed tears when we receive God's grace, yet after a week, no, even after a single day, we have forgotten it completely.
둘째, 우리의 마음은 잘 기울어집니다. 바른 것보다 편한 것으로, 진리보다 듣기 좋은 말로, 조금씩 조금씩 기울어지는 것입니다.Second, our hearts lean so easily. Little by little we tilt from what is right toward what is comfortable, from the truth toward words that are pleasant to hear.
셋째, 우리의 마음은 엉뚱한 것을 만들어냅니다. 그러니까 심지어는 하나님의 경우에도 성경에서 말씀하시는 하나님이 아니라, 내가 원하는 대로 깎고 다듬은 나만의 하나님을 스스로 만들어내는 것입니다.Third, our hearts invent strange things. Even with God himself, we do not worship the God whom the Bible reveals; we carve and polish a god of our own, shaped just the way we want him.
여러분, 우리 자신을 한번 돌아보시기 바랍니다. 지난 한 주간 나의 마음은 어떠했습니까? 받은 은혜를 기억하며 살았습니까, 아니면 잊어버리고 살았습니까? 진리 쪽으로 걸었습니까, 아니면 편한 쪽으로 기울어졌습니까? 성경이 보여주시는 하나님을 예배했습니까, 아니면 내 소원을 이루어주는 하나님을 마음속에 그려 놓고 있었습니까? 이것은 남의 이야기가 아닙니다. 바로 우리 모두의 이야기인 것입니다.Dear friends, look back at yourselves for a moment. How was my heart this past week? Did I live remembering the grace I received, or did I live forgetting it? Did I walk toward the truth, or did I lean toward what was comfortable? Did I worship the God whom the Scriptures show us, or had I painted in my heart a god who exists to grant my wishes? This is not someone else's story. It is the story of every one of us.
그러면 어떤 분은 이렇게 말씀하실 것입니다.Then someone may say this:
"목사님, 그건 잘 모르겠지만, 저는 그래도 열심히 살았습니다. 저는 정말로 최선을 다했습니다."“Pastor, I am not sure about all that, but I have lived diligently. I truly did my very best.”
그렇습니다. 열심은 귀한 것입니다. 그러나 열심보다 더 중요한 것이 있습니다. 과연 그 열심이 어느 방향을 향하고 있느냐는 것입니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.Yes. Zeal is precious. But there is something more important than zeal: which direction is that zeal facing? The Scripture says:
"내가 증거하노니 저희가 하나님께 열심이 있으나 지식을 좇은 것이 아니라" 로마서 10:2“For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.” Romans 10:2
인간에게는 열심이 있었습니다. 그런데 하나님을 아는 진리의 참 지식을 좇은 것이 아니었습니다. 하나님을 향하지 않은, 주님을 모르는 방향 없는 열심이었던 것입니다.They had zeal. But it was not zeal that pursued the true knowledge of God. It was zeal without direction, zeal that did not face God, zeal that did not know the Lord.
여러분, 고속도로를 역주행하는 차를 생각해 보십시오. 그 차가 빠르면 빠를수록 어떻게 됩니까? 마주 달려오는 차와 충돌하게 되는 것입니다. 전혀 가고 싶은 목적지에 일찍 도착하는 것이 아닙니다.Dear friends, think of a car driving the wrong way on the highway. The faster that car goes, what happens? It collides with the cars racing toward it. It does not arrive early at the destination it wanted to reach.
파멸에 일찍 도착하는 것입니다.It arrives early at destruction.
속도가 그를 구원하지 못합니다. 속도가 그를 죽이는 것입니다.Speed does not save him. Speed kills him.
우리의 인생도 마찬가지입니다. 아무리 성실하게 달려도, 아무리 재능이 뛰어나도, 길이 틀렸다면 그 모든 성실과 재능이 우리를 구원하지 못하는 것입니다.Our lives are the same. However faithfully we run, however talented we are, if the road is wrong, all that faithfulness and talent cannot save us.
오해하지 마시기 바랍니다. 천천히 가면 구원받는다는 말이 아닙니다. 빨리 가는 것이 죄라는 말도 아닙니다.Please do not misunderstand. I am not saying that going slowly will save you. I am not saying that going fast is a sin.
문제는 속도가 아니라는 겁니다. 진짜 문제는 우리가 과연 어느 길 위에 있느냐는 것입니다.The problem is not speed. The real question is which road we are on.
주님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.The Lord said this:
"좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고" 마태복음 7:13“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.” Matthew 7:13
넓은 길은 달리기 좋은 길입니다. 그래서 더 무서운 것입니다. 멸망으로 가는 길에서는 오히려 아무것도 나를 막지 않는 것처럼 느껴지는 것입니다. 모든 것이 잘 풀리고, 속도도 나고, 수많은 사람이 함께 환호하며 달려갈 수 있습니다. 그것이 무서운 것입니다.The wide road is a good road for running. That is what makes it more frightening. On the road to destruction, it feels as if nothing is holding me back. Everything goes smoothly, the speed picks up, and countless people run along together, cheering. That is what makes it terrifying.
그래서 우리는 물어야 합니다. 나는 얼마나 빨리 가고 있는가가 아니라, 지금 과연 어느 길 위에 있는가 하는 것입니다.So we must ask, not how fast I am going, but which road I am on right now.
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 바른 길을 찾을 수 있습니까?Beloved brothers and sisters, then how can we find the right road?
본론 2 — 등불 앞에 선 발
옛날 이야기 하나를 말씀드리겠습니다. 옛날에 한 번 들어가면 아무도 살아서 나올 수 없는 미궁이 있었습니다. 수없이 많은 갈림길과 막다른 골목이 얽히고설킨 미로였습니다. 그런데 한 청년이 그 미궁에 들어갔다가 살아서 나왔습니다.Let me tell you an old story. Long ago there was a labyrinth from which no one who entered ever came out alive. It was a maze of countless forks and dead ends, all tangled together. Yet one young man went into that labyrinth and came out alive.
그 비결이 무엇이었습니까?What was his secret?
남보다 힘이 세서였습니까? 아닙니다.Was he stronger than others? No.
남보다 빨리 달려서였습니까? 아닙니다.Did he run faster than others? No.
입구에 실을 묶어 두고, 그 실을 따라 들어갔기 때문입니다. 그 실을 손에 잡고 있는 한, 그는 아무리 깊이 들어가도 돌아올 길을 잃지 않았습니다. 그러나 그 실을 놓는 순간, 미궁은 그대로 무덤이 되는 것입니다. 그 청년은 그 실을 놓지 않았기 때문에 길을 잃지 않고 살아서 그 미궁을 빠져나온 것입니다.He tied a thread at the entrance and went in following that thread. As long as he held that thread in his hand, however deep he went, he could not lose the way back. But the moment he let go of the thread, the labyrinth would become his tomb. Because that young man never let go of the thread, he did not lose his way, and he came out of that labyrinth alive.
여러분, 그 미궁이 어디에 있습니까? 저 바깥 세상에 있습니까? 아닙니다. 우리 마음속에 있는 것입니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.Dear friends, where is that labyrinth? Is it somewhere out in the world? No. It is inside our own hearts. The Scripture says:
"만물보다 거짓되고 심히 부패한 것은 마음이라 누가 능히 이를 알리요마는" 예레미야 17:9“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9
만물보다 거짓된 것이 마음이라고 하십니다. 아까 말씀드린 세 가지 병을 기억하십니까? 인간에게는 잊어버리는 골목이 있습니다. 똑바로 가지 못하고 기울어지는 골목이 있습니다. 내 마음대로 하나님을 만들어내는 골목이 있습니다. 그렇습니다, 우리는 우리 마음의 미궁 속에서 태어난 사람들인 것입니다.More deceitful than all things, it says, is the heart. Do you remember the three diseases I mentioned? In us there is the alley of forgetting. There is the alley of leaning, unable to walk straight. There is the alley of manufacturing a god of my own making. Yes, we are people born inside the labyrinth of our own hearts.
그런데 이 미궁의 가장 무서운 점이 무엇인지 아십니까? 성경은 말씀하십니다.And do you know the most fearful thing about this labyrinth? The Scripture says:
"어떤 길은 사람의 보기에 바르나 필경은 사망의 길이니라" 잠언 14:12“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Proverbs 14:12
미궁 안의 모든 골목이 바른 길처럼 보인다는 것입니다. 사망의 길이 사망의 길처럼 보이면 누가 그 길로 가겠습니까? 사람의 보기에 바르기 때문에, 그럴듯하기 때문에, 주변 사람들 모두 다 그리로 가기 때문에, 우리는 그 길을 의심조차 하지 않는 것입니다.Every alley inside the labyrinth looks like the right way. If the way of death looked like the way of death, who would take it? Because it seems right to a man, because it looks plausible, because everyone around us is going that way, we never even think to question that road.
그러므로 여러분, 미궁 안에서 그린 지도로는 미궁을 빠져나갈 수 없습니다.Therefore, dear friends, a map drawn inside the labyrinth can never lead us out of the labyrinth.
그렇다면 미궁을 빠져나갈 길을 알려주는 그 실은 어디에서 와야 합니까?Then where must the thread come from, the thread that shows the way out of the labyrinth?
그것은 우리 안에서 나올 수가 없습니다. 그 실은 우리의 바깥에서 와야 합니다.It cannot come from within us. That thread must come from outside us.
이것은 우리가 만들어 낸 실이 아닙니다. 밖에서 우리에게 건네진 구원의 실입니다. 그것이 하나님의 말씀인 것입니다.This is not a thread we made ourselves. It is the thread of salvation handed to us from outside. That is the Word of God.
여러분, 이것이 은혜입니다. 우리가 하나님을 찾아낸 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 먼저 우리에게 말씀을 건네주신 것입니다. 성경 육십육 권 한 권 한 권이, 마음의 미궁 속에 갇힌 우리를 위해 하늘에서 내려온 구원의 실이 되시는 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 증거이기 때문입니다.Dear friends, this is grace. We did not find God; God first handed his Word to us. For each of the sixty-six books of the Bible is a witness to our Lord Jesus Christ, who became for us the thread of salvation come down from heaven for those trapped in the labyrinth of the heart.
그래서 시편 기자는 이렇게 노래하는 것입니다.That is why the psalmist sings:
"주의 말씀은 내 발에 등이요 내 길에 빛이니이다" 시편 119:105“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
여러분, 이 말씀을 자세히 보시기 바랍니다. 등불은 어디를 비춥니까? 지평선 끝까지 비춥니까? 아닙니다. 발 앞을 비춥니다. 하나님은 우리에게 십 년 치 지도를 주시지 않습니다. 오늘 걸을 한 걸음의 빛을 주시는 것입니다. 오늘 우리에게 필요한 것은 오늘의 한 걸음입니다.Dear friends, look closely at this verse. Where does a lamp shine? Does it shine all the way to the horizon? No. It shines on the space before your feet. God does not hand us a ten-year map. He gives us light for the one step we walk today. What we need today is today's one step.
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그래서 신앙생활은 거창한 것이 아닙니다. 오늘 아침 말씀 한 절을 읽고, 그 말씀이 비추는 한 걸음을 순종으로 내딛는 것입니다. 그 한 걸음이 모여서 하루가 되고, 하루가 모여서 일 년이 되고, 일 년이 모여서 평생의 길이 되는 것입니다. 등불을 든 사람은 뛰지 않습니다. 등불을 든 사람은 한 걸음씩 걷는 것입니다. 그리고 그 한 걸음, 한 걸음이 모여서, 마침내 길 되신 주님 안에서 평생의 길을 이루는 것입니다.Beloved brothers and sisters, that is why the life of faith is not some grand thing. It is reading one verse of the Word this morning and taking, in obedience, the one step that verse lights up. Those single steps gather into a day, the days gather into a year, and the years gather into the road of a lifetime. A person carrying a lamp does not run. A person carrying a lamp walks one step at a time. And those steps, one by one, gather until at last, in the Lord who is the Way, they form the road of a whole life.
이제 두 사람을 나란히 세워 보겠습니다. 한 사람은 잘못된 길 위를 전속력으로 달려갑니다. 건강합니다. 유능합니다. 거칠 것이 없습니다. 또 한 사람은 진리의 길 위를 절뚝이며 걸어갑니다. 느립니다. 자주 넘어집니다. 초라해 보입니다.Now let me set two people side by side. One runs at full speed on the wrong road. He is healthy. He is capable. Nothing stands in his way. The other limps along the road of truth. He is slow. He stumbles often. He looks shabby.
세상은 앞사람을 부러워합니다. 그러나 하나님께서 보시는 것은 속도가 아니라, 그 발이 어느 길 위에 있느냐는 것입니다.The world envies the first man. But what God looks at is not speed. He looks at which road the feet are on.
여러분은 지금 어느 쪽입니까? 빠르게 달리고 있어서 안심하고 계십니까? 아니면 절뚝이고 있어서 낙심하고 계십니까? 기억하시기 바랍니다. 속도는 아무것도 보증해 주지 못합니다. 어느 길을 가고 있느냐가 모든 것을 결정하는 것입니다.Which one are you right now? Are you at ease because you are running fast? Or are you discouraged because you are limping? Please remember: speed guarantees nothing. Which road you are on decides everything.
주님께서는 말씀하셨습니다.The Lord said:
"생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 이가 적음이니라" 마태복음 7:14“For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:14
진리의 좁은 길에서는 절뚝여도 괜찮습니다. 중요한 것은 그 길을 떠나지 않는 것입니다.On the narrow road of truth, it is all right to limp. What matters is not leaving that road.
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 저는 오늘 이 한 문장을 여러분의 마음에 새겨드리고 싶습니다.Beloved brothers and sisters, today I long to engrave this one sentence upon your hearts.
잘못된 길 위를 전속력으로 달리는 것보다, 진리의 길 안에서 절뚝이며 걷는 것이 낫습니다.Better to walk limping within the road of truth than to run at full speed on the wrong road.
그렇습니다.Yes.
절뚝이는 것이 실패가 아닙니다. 길을 잃는 것이 문제인 것입니다.Limping is not failure. Losing the road is the problem.
혹시 오늘 이 자리에 몸이 예전 같지 않은 분이 계십니까? 신앙생활이 마음처럼 되지 않아 낙심하신 분이 계십니까? 오래 믿었는데도 여전히 넘어지는 자신에게 실망하신 분이 계십니까?Is there anyone here today whose body is not what it used to be? Anyone discouraged because the life of faith does not go the way your heart wishes? Anyone disappointed in yourself, still stumbling after believing so long?
성경은 그런 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다.To such as us the Scripture says:
"그러므로 피곤한 손과 연약한 무릎을 일으켜 세우고 너희 발을 위하여 곧은 길을 만들어 저는 다리로 하여금 어그러지지 않고 고침을 받게 하라" 히브리서 12:12-13“Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.” Hebrews 12:12-13
보십시오. 하나님은 절뚝이는 우리를 길 밖으로 밀어내지 않으십니다. 오히려 저는 다리가 더 어그러지지 않도록 곧은 길을 걸으라고 말씀하시는 것입니다.Look at this. God does not push the limping out of the road. Rather, he tells us to walk the straight path so that the lame leg may not be put out of joint but healed.
여러분, 몸의 걸음만 그런 것이 아닙니다. 믿음의 걸음도 마찬가지입니다. 인생의 어려움에 처해 마음의 어려움이 있어 기도가 예전처럼 뜨겁지 않아도, 찬송이 예전처럼 힘차지 않아도, 말씀 앞에 앉는 그 자리를 떠나지 않는 한, 여러분은 여전히 주님을 향해 걷고 계신 것입니다. 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 것은 빨리 달리는 것이 아니라, 주님을 붙들고 끝까지 길 위에 머무는 것입니다.Dear friends, this is not only about the steps of the body. It is the same with the steps of faith. Even when life is hard and the heart is heavy, even when prayer is not as fervent as before and the hymns are not as strong as before, as long as you do not leave that seat before the Word, you are still walking toward the Lord. What pleases God is not running fast, but holding on to the Lord and staying on the road to the end.
팔십오 세의 갈렙이 "이 산지를 내게 주소서" 하고 외칠 수 있었던 것도, 그의 나이 든 다리가 여전히 약속의 길 안에 서 있었기 때문입니다. 그의 강건함은 사십 년 광야 길에서 그를 생존케 하신 하나님의 은혜의 증거인 것입니다.Caleb at eighty-five could cry out, “Give me this hill country,” because his aged legs still stood within the road of the promise. His strength was the evidence of the grace of God who had kept him alive through forty years of wilderness road.
그러므로 약하다고 낙심하지 마십시오. 느리다고 포기하지 마십시오.So do not be discouraged that you are weak. Do not give up because you are slow.
오늘 한 걸음이라도 좋습니다.Even one step today is enough.
말씀의 등불, 진리의 등불 앞에서 걸으십시오.Walk before the lamp of the Word, the lamp of truth.
본론 3 — 마침내 돌이킨 발
그렇다면 길 밖 엉뚱한 길 위를 달리던 사람은 어떻게 해야 합니까? 더 열심히 달려야 합니까? 아닙니다. 역주행하던 차가 할 일은 가속 페달을 더 밟는 것이 아닙니다.Then what should the person do who has been racing along a wrong road outside the way? Run harder? No. What a car going the wrong way must do is not press the accelerator harder.
차를 돌리는 것입니다.It must turn around.
성경은 이것을 회개라고 부릅니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.The Bible calls this repentance. The Scripture says:
"그러므로 너희가 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 죄 없이 함을 받으라 이같이 하면 유쾌하게 되는 날이 주 앞으로부터 이를 것이요" 사도행전 3:19“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” Acts 3:19
"회개하고 돌이켜."“Repent, and turn back.”
여기에는 두 움직임이 함께 있습니다. 성경이 말하는 회개, 곧 메타노이아는 생각과 마음이 바뀌는 것입니다. 그리고 "돌이키다"라는 말, 에피스트레포는 방향을 바꾸어 돌아오는 것입니다.Two movements are here together. The repentance the Bible speaks of, metanoia, is the changing of the mind and heart. And the word for turning back, epistrepho, is to change direction and return.
그러므로 참된 회개는 생각에서 끝나지 않습니다.So true repentance does not end in the mind.
그렇습니다.Yes.
마음이 돌아서면 발걸음의 방향이 돌아서는 것입니다.When the heart turns, the direction of the footsteps turns.
어디로 돌아옵니까? 진리로, 생명으로, 바로 우리 주 예수 그리스도께로 돌아오는 것입니다.To where do we return? To the truth, to life, to our Lord Jesus Christ himself.
그리고 여러분, 회개는 주님께 처음 돌아오는 한 번의 사건으로 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 주님께 돌아온 성도도 매일 조금씩 길에서 벗어나는 연약한 사람들이기 때문입니다. 그래서 매일 아침 말씀 앞에서 나의 발걸음을 다시 확인하고, 벗어난 만큼 다시 돌이키는 것 — 이것이 성도의 하루인 것입니다.And dear friends, repentance is not a single event that ends when we first return to the Lord. Even saints who have returned to the Lord are weak people who drift a little off the road every day. So each morning, before the Word, we examine our steps again and turn back as far as we have strayed. This is the saint's daily life.
시편 119편에는 105절만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 같은 시편에서 시인은 이렇게 고백합니다.Psalm 119 does not contain verse 105 alone. In the same psalm the poet confesses:
"내가 내 행위를 생각하고 주의 증거로 내 발을 돌이켰사오며" 시편 119:59“When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies.” Psalm 119:59
이 한 절 안에 회개의 모습이 다 들어 있습니다. 먼저 자기 행위를 생각했습니다. 그리고 발을 돌이켰습니다.In this one verse the whole shape of repentance is found. First he thought on his ways. Then he turned his feet.
그 발이 돌아간 곳이 어디입니까?And where did those feet return?
"주의 증거로."“To your testimonies.”
곧 하나님의 말씀으로 돌아간 것입니다.That is, he returned to the Word of God.
생각하고, 돌이키고, 말씀으로 돌아오는 것 — 이것이 회개인 것입니다.To think, to turn, to come back to the Word: this is repentance.
그런데 여러분, 여기서 우리가 반드시 알아야 할 것이 있습니다. 성경은 하나님에 대하여 이렇게 말씀하십니다.But dear friends, here is something we must know. The Scripture says this about God:
"오직 그에게만 죽지 아니함이 있고 가까이 가지 못할 빛에 거하시고 아무 사람도 보지 못하였고 또 볼 수 없는 자시니 그에게 존귀와 영원한 능력을 돌릴지어다 아멘" 디모데전서 6:16“Who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:16
가까이 가지 못할 빛에 거하신다고 하십니다. 어둠 속에 갇힌 우리가 그 찬란한 빛의 근원으로 올라가는 길을 스스로 뚫어낼 수는 없는 것입니다.He dwells, it says, in unapproachable light. We who are shut up in darkness could never carve out for ourselves a way up to the source of that brilliant light.
그렇다면 우리가 어떻게 스스로 하나님께 가는 길을 찾아냈겠습니까?Then how could we ever have found the way to God on our own?
우리가 하나님께 가는 길을 찾아낸 것이 아닙니다.We did not find the way to God.
하나님께서 우리에게 오시는 길을 내신 것입니다.God made a way to come to us.
주님께서는 말씀하셨습니다.The Lord said:
"예수께서 가라사대 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라" 요한복음 14:6“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
"내가 곧 길이요."“I am the way.”
여러분, 길이 사람이 되어 우리에게 오셨습니다.Dear friends, the Way became a person and came to us.
밖에서 건네진 실을 따라 이 미로를 벗어나게 되면, 그 실 끝에 어떤 물건이 있는 것이 아닙니다.When we follow the thread handed to us from outside and escape this maze, what waits at the end of the thread is not some object.
거기에는 살아계신 한 인격이신 성자 하나님, 예수 그리스도께서 양팔을 벌리고 서 계신 것입니다.There stands the living person, God the Son, Jesus Christ, with both arms open wide.
베드로 사도는 이렇게 말합니다.The apostle Peter says:
"너희가 전에는 양과 같이 길을 잃었더니 이제는 너희 영혼의 목자와 감독 되신 자에게 돌아왔느니라" 베드로전서 2:25“For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:25
양처럼 길을 잃었던 우리가 돌아온 곳은 어떤 장소가 아닙니다.The place we returned to, we who had strayed like sheep, is not a place at all.
목자이신 우리의 구세주 한 분께 돌아온 것입니다.We returned to one person, the Shepherd, our Savior.
이것이 우리의 신앙입니다. 우리는 어떤 제도나 종교 생활로 돌아온 것이 아닙니다. 나를 아시고, 내 이름을 부르시고, 나를 위해 목숨을 버리신 선한 목자의 품으로 돌아온 것입니다. 그 품 안에서 우리의 절뚝이는 걸음이 비로소 안전해지는 것입니다.This is our faith. We did not return to an institution or to a religious routine. We returned into the arms of the Good Shepherd who knows me, who calls my name, who laid down his life for me. In those arms our limping steps at last become safe.
그렇다면 이제 마지막 질문입니다.Then here is the final question.
성경대로 산다는 것은 무엇입니까?What does it mean to live by the Bible?
성경에 적힌 규칙을 잘 지키는 것입니까?Is it keeping well the rules written in the Bible?
주님께서 당시의 성경 전문가들에게 하신 말씀을 들어 보시기 바랍니다.Listen to what the Lord said to the Bible experts of his day:
"너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 상고하거니와 이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증거하는 것이로다 그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다" 요한복음 5:39-40“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” John 5:39-40
그들은 성경을 열심히 상고했습니다. 그런데 주님은 "너희가 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다"라고 하십니다.They searched the Scriptures diligently. Yet the Lord says, “You refuse to come to me.”
실을 손에 쥐고도 걷지 않은 사람들입니다. 실타래를 평생 연구하면서, 정작 그 실이 인도하는 분께는 한 걸음도 가지 않은 사람들인 것입니다.They were people who held the thread in their hands and never walked. They studied the skein of thread all their lives, yet never took a single step toward the One to whom the thread leads.
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 성경대로 산다는 것은 적힌 규칙을 지키는 데서 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 내가 읽는 성경 속에서 살아계신 예수 그리스도를 만나고, 그 말씀을 붙들고 살아가는 내 삶 속에서도 지금 일하시는 주님을 만나는 것입니다.Beloved brothers and sisters, living by the Bible does not end with keeping written rules. It is meeting the living Jesus Christ in the Bible I read, and meeting the Lord who is working even now in the life I live holding on to that Word.
아브라함의 하나님은 박물관의 하나님이 아닙니다. 아브라함에게 말씀하시고 역사하셨던 그 하나님이, 오늘도 살아서 우리에게 역사하시는 것입니다. 그 하나님이 오늘도 여러분의 이름을 알고 계시고, 여러분의 절뚝이는 걸음을 지켜보고 계시고, 여러분이 성경을 펴고 그 말씀 앞에 앉을 때, 그 말씀을 통하여 오늘도 여러분에게 말씀하시는 것입니다.The God of Abraham is not a museum God. The God who spoke to Abraham and worked for him is alive today and working for us. That God knows your name today, watches your limping steps today, and when you open the Bible and sit before the Word, he speaks to you today through that Word.
그리고 그 사실을 가장 아름답게 보여주는 장면 가운데 하나가 엠마오로 내려가던 두 제자의 이야기입니다. 부활하신 주님을 만난 두 제자의 고백을 들어 보십시오.And one of the most beautiful scenes that shows this truth is the story of the two disciples going down to Emmaus. Listen to the confession of the two disciples who met the risen Lord:
"저희가 서로 말하되 길에서 우리에게 말씀하시고 우리에게 성경을 풀어 주실 때에 우리 속에서 마음이 뜨겁지 아니하더냐 하고" 누가복음 24:32“They said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?’” Luke 24:32
길에서였습니다.It was on the road.
말씀이 풀릴 때였습니다.It was when the Scriptures were opened.
그때 마음이 뜨거워진 것입니다.That is when their hearts burned.
그런데 여러분, 더 놀라운 사실은 그들이 주님을 알아보기 전부터, 주님은 이미 그들과 보폭을 맞추며 함께 걷고 계셨다는 것입니다. 제자들이 낙심하여 터덜터덜 걷던 그 길에, 살아계신 주님이 이미 동행하고 계셨던 것입니다.But dear friends, the more amazing fact is this: even before they recognized him, the Lord was already walking with them, matching their pace. On that road where the disciples trudged along in despair, the living Lord was already walking beside them.
오늘도 마찬가지입니다. 여러분이 말씀을 펴는 그 자리에, 절뚝이며 걷는 그 길 위에, 여러분이 아직 다 이해하지 못하는 순간에도 살아계신 주님은 함께 걸으시는 것입니다.It is the same today. In the place where you open the Word, on the road where you walk limping, even in the moments you do not yet fully understand, the living Lord is walking with you.
지금 여러분의 인생길이 엠마오 길처럼 낙심의 길일 수 있습니다. 기대가 무너진 길일 수 있습니다. 그러나 기억하시기 바랍니다. 그 길 위에서 주님은 여러분을 떠나신 적이 없으십니다. 말씀이 열릴 때, 낙심했던 마음도 그 두 제자처럼 다시 살아날 수 있는 것입니다.Your road right now may be a road of discouragement like the Emmaus road. It may be a road where hopes have collapsed. But remember: on that road the Lord has never left you. When the Word is opened, a discouraged heart can come alive again, just like those two disciples.
이제 처음의 말씀으로 돌아가겠습니다.Now let us return to the first Scripture.
우리는 다 양 같아서 각기 제 길로 갔습니다.All we like sheep went each his own way.
그런데 성경은 말씀하십니다.But the Scripture says:
"그가 찔림은 우리의 허물을 인함이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악을 인함이라 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리가 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 입었도다" 이사야 53:5“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
우리는 다 각각 제 길로 갔습니다.We all went each our own way.
그러나 우리 주님은 우리의 허물 때문에 찔리셨습니다.But our Lord was pierced for our transgressions.
우리는 길을 잃었습니다.We lost the way.
그러나 주님은 우리를 위해 길이 되어 주셨습니다.But the Lord became the Way for us.
그리고 우리가 받아야 할 징계를 우리 주님이 대신 받으셨습니다. 그래서 길 잃고 죄 많은 우리가 하나님께 돌아갈 길이 열린 것입니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.And the chastisement we deserved, our Lord bore in our place. So for us, lost and full of sin, the way back to God was opened. The Scripture says:
"그 길은 우리를 위하여 휘장 가운데로 열어 놓으신 새롭고 산 길이요 휘장은 곧 저의 육체니라" 히브리서 10:20“By the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.” Hebrews 10:20
찢어진 것은 주님의 몸이었고, 열린 것은 우리의 길이었습니다.What was torn was the Lord's body; what was opened was our way.
이것이 복음입니다.This is the gospel.
그렇습니다.Yes.
우리가 길을 찾은 것이 아닙니다.We did not find the way.
길이 우리를 찾아오신 것입니다.The Way came and found us.
결론 — 그 길은 예수 그리스도이십니다
사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 오늘 우리는 빠른 인생이 아니라 길 안의 인생을 살펴보았습니다.Beloved brothers and sisters, today we have looked not at the fast life but at the life within the way.
길 잃은 발이 있었습니다.There was the foot that lost its way.
등불 앞에 선 발이 있었습니다.There was the foot that stood before the lamp.
그리고 마침내 돌이킨 발이 있었습니다.And there was the foot that finally turned back.
이제 결단하시기 바랍니다.Now I ask you to decide.
첫째, 길 밖 엉뚱한 길에서 달리던 발을 주님을 향해 돌이키십시오. 아직 늦지 않았습니다. 역주행하던 차가 차를 돌리는 그 순간, 방향이 달라지는 것입니다. 오늘이 바로 그 돌이킴의 날이 되기를 바랍니다.First, turn back to the Lord the feet that were running on a wrong road outside the way. It is not too late. The moment the wrong-way car turns around, the direction changes. May today be that very day of turning.
둘째, 이번 한 주간 하루 한 걸음, 하나님의 말씀 앞에 앉으십시오. 그 자리는 단지 책을 읽는 자리가 아닙니다. 엠마오의 두 제자처럼, 살아계신 주님을 만나는 자리입니다. 일주일에 성경을 몇 장 읽었는가보다 더 중요한 것은, 오늘 그 말씀 앞에서 살아계신 주님을 만났는가 하는 것입니다.Second, this week, one step a day, sit before the Word of God. That seat is not merely a place for reading a book. Like the two disciples of Emmaus, it is the place where you meet the living Lord. More important than how many chapters of the Bible you read this week is whether today, before that Word, you met the living Lord.
새벽 제단이든, 하루를 마감하며 조용히 성경을 펴는 자리든, 말씀을 펴는 그 자리마다 주님께서 여러분을 만나 주실 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 미처 알아보지 못할 때에도, 주님은 이미 우리의 길에 함께 계십니다.Whether at the dawn altar, or in the quiet place where you open the Bible at the close of the day, in every place where you open the Word the Lord will meet you. And even when we fail to recognize him, the Lord is already with us on our road.
처음에 이 설교의 제목을 들으셨을 때, "절뚝여도 길 안에"라는 말이 올바른 인생의 길에서 벗어나지 말라는 뜻으로 들리셨을 것입니다.When you first heard the title of this sermon, “Limping, Yet on the Way” may have sounded like a word telling you not to stray from the right road of life.
그러나 이제 우리는 압니다.But now we know.
그 길은 도로가 아닙니다.That way is not a road.
그 길은 규칙이 아닙니다.That way is not a rule.
그 길은 예수 그리스도이십니다.That way is Jesus Christ.
절뚝여도 좋습니다.It is all right to limp.
그리스도 안에 계십시오.Stay in Christ.
느려도 좋습니다.It is all right to be slow.
넘어졌다가 다시 일어나도 좋습니다.It is all right to fall and rise again.
길 되신 주님께서 여러분과 함께 걸으십니다.The Lord who is the Way walks with you.
주님께서 친히 말씀하셨습니다. "내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니." 그렇습니다. 그 길은 생명의 길입니다. 생명 되신 주님과 함께 걷는 사람은 절뚝이는 그 자리에 머물러 있지 않습니다. 성경은 말씀하십니다.The Lord himself said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Yes. That way is the way of life. The one who walks with the Lord who is Life does not remain stuck where he limps. The Scripture says:
"피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시나니 소년이라도 피곤하며 곤비하며 장정이라도 넘어지며 자빠지되 오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리의 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비치 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤치 아니하리로다" 이사야 40:29-31“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31
보십시오. 장정이라도 넘어지며 자빠집니다. 빨리 달리던 그 건강한 사람도 넘어지는 것입니다. 그러나 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻습니다. 절뚝이며 시작한 걸음에 새 힘이 임합니다. 피곤하던 다리가 강건하여집니다. 하나님의 능력이 그 걸음 위에 임하여, 인생이 바뀌는 것입니다. 생명 되신 주님이 함께 걷는 삶이기 때문입니다.Look at this. Even young men fall exhausted. Even that healthy man who was running fast falls down. But those who wait for the LORD renew their strength. New strength comes upon the steps that began with a limp. Weary legs grow strong. The power of God comes upon those steps, and a life is changed, because it is a life walked together with the Lord who is Life.
