확신은 어디서 오는가

오늘 우리가 함께 나눌 말씀은 고린도전서 2장 10절부터 16절까지입니다.Today's passage is First Corinthians chapter two, verses ten through sixteen.

"오직 하나님이 성령으로 이것을 우리에게 보이셨으니 성령은 모든 것 곧 하나님의 깊은 것까지도 통달하시느니라 (10절)But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God (v. 10).

사람의 일을 사람의 속에 있는 영 외에 누가 알리요 이와 같이 하나님의 일도 하나님의 영 외에는 아무도 알지 못하느니라 (11절)For who knows the thoughts of a man except the man's own spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God (v. 11).

우리가 세상의 영을 받지 아니하고 오직 하나님으로부터 온 영을 받았으니 이는 우리로 하여금 하나님께서 우리에게 은혜로 주신 것들을 알게 하려 하심이라 (12절)We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us (v. 12).

우리가 이것을 말하거니와 사람의 지혜가 가르친 말로 아니하고 오직 성령께서 가르치신 것으로 하니 영적인 일은 영적인 것으로 분별하느니라 (13절)This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things in spiritual words (v. 13).

육에 속한 사람은 하나님의 성령의 일들을 받지 아니하나니 이는 그것들이 그에게는 어리석게 보임이요 또 그는 그것들을 알 수도 없나니 그러한 일은 영적으로 분별되기 때문이라 (14절)The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. He cannot understand them, because they are discerned only through the Spirit (v. 14).

신령한 자는 모든 것을 판단하나 자기는 아무에게도 판단을 받지 아니하느니라 (15절)The spiritual person makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to merely human judgment (v. 15).

누가 주의 마음을 알아서 주를 가르치겠느냐 그러나 우리가 그리스도의 마음을 가졌느니라 (16절)"For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ (v. 16).

서론

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 주일 예배를 다 드리고 집에 돌아가신 저녁을 한번 생각해 보시기 바랍니다. 찬송도 좋았고 말씀도 은혜로웠습니다. 그런데 집에 돌아와 조용히 앉아 있으면, 이제는 아무도 말을 걸지 않는 시간이 옵니다.Dear brothers and sisters, think for a moment about the evening after you come home from Sunday worship. The hymns were good. The message was full of grace. But then you come home, you sit down quietly, and a time comes when no one speaks to you anymore.

바로 그런 순간에 아무 예고도 없이 이런 생각이 올라올 때가 있습니다.And in a moment like that, without any warning, a thought can rise up in your heart.

"나는 왜 하나님을 믿고 있는가."Why Do I Believe in God?

부모님께서 믿으셨기 때문에 나도 믿는 것일까요. 어려서부터 교회에 다니다 보니 몸에 밴 것일까요. 아니면 내가 믿고 싶어서 나 혼자 그렇게 생각하는 것은 아닐까요.Is it because my parents believed, and so I believe too? Is it just a habit, because I have come to church since I was young? Or could it be that I believe only because I want to, and it is just my own idea?

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 질문을 두려워하실 필요가 없습니다. 이것은 믿음을 흔드는 질문이 아닙니다. 내 믿음의 뿌리가 어디에 박혀 있는지를 확인하려는 질문인 것입니다.Dear brothers and sisters, you do not need to be afraid of this question. This is not a question that shakes your faith. It is a question that asks where the roots of your faith are planted.

그런데 오늘 말씀드리는 확신이 무엇인지를 먼저 분명히 해 두겠습니다. 한 번도 흔들리지 않는 강한 감정을 뜻하지 않습니다. 어떤 질문에도 막힘없이 대답하는 자신감을 말하는 것도 아닙니다. 십자가의 말씀을 하나님의 지혜로 받아들이고, 그리스도께 나 자신을 맡기는 믿음의 확신인 것입니다.But first let me make clear what I mean today by assurance. It does not mean a strong feeling that never wavers. It does not mean the confidence of being able to answer every question without hesitation. It is the assurance of faith that receives the word of the cross as the wisdom of God, and entrusts myself to Christ.

나무를 한번 생각해 보십시오. 바람이 불면 가지는 흔들립니다. 그러나 나무가 서 있느냐 쓰러지느냐 하는 것은 가지가 얼마나 흔들렸느냐에 달려 있지 않습니다. 뿌리가 어디에 박혀 있느냐에 달려 있는 것입니다.Think about a tree. When the wind blows, the branches shake. But whether the tree stands or falls does not depend on how much the branches shook. It depends on where the roots are planted.

우리 믿음도 그렇습니다. 살다 보면 질문이 생기고, 설명이 막힐 때도 있고, 어떤 날은 마음이 심하게 흔들리기도 합니다. 그러므로 우리가 오늘 물어야 할 것은 "내가 얼마나 흔들리고 있는가"가 아닙니다. "내 믿음의 뿌리가 어디에 있는가" 하는 것입니다.Our faith is the same. As we live, questions come up. Sometimes our explanations run out. And on some days our hearts are shaken badly. So the question we must ask today is not, how much am I shaking? It is, where is the root of my faith?

바울은 고린도전서 이 장을 열면서 이렇게 말했습니다. 자기가 여러분 가운데서 알기로 작정한 것은 예수 그리스도와 그가 십자가에 못 박히신 것 외에는 아무것도 없다고 말입니다 (고전 2:2). 그리고 앞 장에서는 그 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 가리켜 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜라고 하였습니다 (고전 1:23-24).Paul opens this chapter of First Corinthians by saying this: he resolved to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And in the chapter before, he calls that same crucified Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor 2:2) (1 Cor 1:23-24).

그러니 오늘 우리의 질문은 이렇게 됩니다. 세상은 십자가를 어리석다고 하는데, 나는 어떻게 그 십자가를 나를 위한 하나님의 지혜로 믿게 되었는가. 그 확신은 어디에서 왔는가.So our question today becomes this. The world calls the cross foolishness. Then how did I come to believe that this cross is the wisdom of God for me? Where did that assurance come from?

오늘 본문이 세 단계로 대답합니다.Today's passage answers in three steps.

1. 성령께서 십자가의 지혜를 보여 주십니다

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Scripture says.

"사람의 일을 사람의 속에 있는 영 외에 누가 알리요 이와 같이 하나님의 일도 하나님의 영 외에는 아무도 알지 못하느니라" (고전 2:11).For who knows the thoughts of a man except the man's own spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God (1 Cor 2:11).

바울은 아주 쉬운 자리에서 이야기를 시작합니다.Paul begins from a very simple place.

여러분, 내 속을 누가 가장 잘 압니까.Friends, who knows what is inside me best?

한집에서 수십 년을 함께 산 아내가 나를 압니다. 자식들도 알고 오랜 친구도 압니다.My wife, who has lived with me under one roof for decades, knows me. My children know me. My old friends know me.

그러나 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 아무리 가까운 사람이라도 내 속에 있는 모든 생각을 다 알지는 못합니다. 겉으로는 웃고 있어도 속이 무거울 때가 있습니다. 어젯밤에 혼자 무슨 생각을 하며 잠들었는지, 그것을 아는 사람이 이 세상에 몇이나 되겠습니까. 없습니다. 그것을 아는 것은 오직 내 안에 있는 나의 영뿐인 것입니다.But dear brothers and sisters, no matter how close someone is, they cannot know every thought inside me. There are times when I am smiling on the outside while my heart is heavy. What was I thinking about last night as I fell asleep alone? How many people in this world know that? No one. Only my own spirit within me knows it.

바울은 그 사실을 그대로 하나님께 가져갑니다. 사람의 속을 그 사람의 영이 아는 것처럼, 하나님의 일은 하나님의 영 외에는 아무도 알지 못한다는 것입니다.Paul takes that very fact and applies it to God. Just as a person's own spirit knows what is inside him, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

그리고 그 앞 절을 보시기 바랍니다. 성령께서 모든 것 곧 하나님의 깊은 것까지도 통달하신다고 말씀하십니다.And look at the verse just before. It says the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

깊은 것이라고 했습니다. 얕은 것이 아닙니다. 사람이 조금만 노력하면 알 수 있는 것을 두고 하는 말이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 어떤 분이신지, 무엇을 계획하고 계신지, 왜 그 아들을 십자가에 내어 주셨는지, 그 깊은 뜻을 말하는 것입니다. 그 깊은 곳까지 아시는 분이 누구십니까. 성령이십니다.It says the deep things. Not the shallow things. This is not about something we can figure out with a little effort. It means who God is, what he is planning, and why he gave up his Son on the cross. Those deep purposes. And who knows even those depths? The Holy Spirit.

그렇다면 여기서 우리가 반드시 물어야 할 것이 있습니다.Then here is something we must ask.

하나님께서 자신을 보여 주시지 않는다면, 우리가 무슨 수로 하나님을 알 수 있겠습니까.If God does not show himself to us, by what means could we ever know God?

우리는 하나님에 대하여 생각할 수 있습니다. 하나님에 관한 책을 쓸 수도 있습니다. 아주 논리적으로 이야기할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 사람의 생각을 아무리 높이 쌓아 올린다고 해서, 그 위에 올라서서 하나님의 속을 들여다볼 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.We can think about God. We can write books about God. We can even talk about him very logically. But no matter how high we pile up human thinking, we cannot climb on top of it and look inside the heart of God.

이것은 하나님을 알려고 하지 말라는 말씀이 아닙니다. 다만 우리의 믿음의 그 시작이 어디인지를 분명히 하는 말씀인 것입니다.This is not saying that we should stop trying to know God. It is making clear where our faith begins.

여기에 한 가지를 더 말씀드리겠습니다. 우리는 성경을 살필 수 있습니다. 질문할 수도 있습니다. 그것은 좋은 일입니다. 그러나 내가 성경을 재판석에 앉혀 놓고 살펴본 다음에 "네, 맞습니다" 하고 허락해야, 그제야 성경이 하나님의 말씀이 되는 것은 아닙니다. 사람들이 다 인정해 주어야 하나님의 말씀이 되는 것도 아닙니다.Let me add one more thing. We can examine the Bible. We can ask questions. That is a good thing. But it is not as if I put the Bible on trial, examine it, and only when I say yes, this is correct, does it then become the word of God. Nor does it become his word only when everyone agrees.

성경은 이미 하나님께서 말씀하셨기 때문에 하나님의 말씀인 것입니다.The Bible is the word of God because God has already spoken it.

그렇습니다. 하나님을 아는 것은 우리가 올라가서 얻는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 성령으로 보여 주셔야 아는 것입니다.Knowing God is not something we obtain by climbing up to him. We know him only when God shows himself to us by his Spirit.

2. 성령께서 그 지혜를 말씀으로 전하게 하십니다

그런데 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 여기에서 끝나면 우리에게는 소망이 없습니다.But dear brothers and sisters, if it ended here, we would have no hope.

하나님의 깊은 것은 하나님의 영만 아신다고 했습니다. 그런데 우리는 하나님이 아니지 않습니까. 그렇다면 우리는 평생 하나님을 모르는 자리에 남아 있어야 하는 것입니까.It said that only the Spirit of God knows the deep things of God. But we are not God, are we? Then must we remain all our lives in a place where we never know him?

아닙니다. 바로 여기에서 본문이 놀라운 말씀을 합니다.No. It is right here that the text says something wonderful.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Scripture says.

"우리가 세상의 영을 받지 아니하고 오직 하나님으로부터 온 영을 받았으니 이는 우리로 하여금 하나님께서 우리에게 은혜로 주신 것들을 알게 하려 하심이라" (고전 2:12).We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us (1 Cor 2:12).

여기에서 두 마디만 붙드시기 바랍니다.Hold on to just two phrases here.

먼저 "받았으니"입니다. 받았습니다. 만들어낸 것이 아닙니다. 애를 써서 올라가 얻어낸 것도 아닙니다. 내가 똑똑해서 알아낸 것도 아닙니다. 하나님께서 주셨기 때문에 받은 것입니다.The first is: we have received. We did not make it. We did not climb up and win it by our own effort. We did not figure it out because we were clever. We received it because God gave it.

그런데 무엇을 받았다고 하십니까. 본문을 잘 보시기 바랍니다. 믿음을 받았다고 하지 않았습니다. 하나님으로부터 온 영을 받았다고 하였습니다. 그 성령께서 하나님이 은혜로 주신 것을 알게 하셨고, 그 성령께서 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 나를 위한 하나님의 지혜로 믿게 하신 것입니다.But what does it say we received? Look carefully at the text. It does not say we received faith. It says we received the Spirit who is from God. And that Spirit made us understand what God has freely given. That Spirit made us believe that Christ crucified is the wisdom of God for me.

우리가 아까 물었던 그 질문을 기억하십니까. "혹시 이 믿음은 내가 만들어낸 것이 아닐까." 본문이 여기에서 방향을 바꾸어 놓습니다. 내가 지어낸 것이라면 나 혼자만의 생각일 수 있습니다. 그러나 받은 것이라면, 그것은 나에게서 나온 것이 아닙니다.Do you remember the question we asked earlier? Could this faith be something I made up myself? Right here the text turns that around. If I invented it, it could be only my own idea. But if I received it, then it did not come out of me.

그리고 두 번째 말씀은 "알게 하려 하심이라"입니다. 하나님께서 왜 성령을 주셨습니까. 우리가 짐작할 필요가 없습니다. 본문이 직접 대답하고 있습니다. 우리로 하여금 하나님께서 은혜로 주신 것을 알게 하시려고 주셨다는 것입니다.And the second phrase is: so that we may understand. Why did God give us the Spirit? We do not have to guess. The text answers directly. He gave the Spirit so that we may understand what he has freely given us.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 순서를 한번 천천히 따라와 보시기 바랍니다.Dear brothers and sisters, follow this order slowly with me.

하나님의 깊은 것은 하나님의 영만 아십니다. 그런데 하나님께서 그 하나님의 영을 우리에게 주셨습니다. 왜 주셨습니까. 우리로 알게 하시려고 주셨습니다.Only the Spirit of God knows the deep things of God. And yet God gave us that very Spirit. Why did he give him? So that we might know.

내가 하나님께로 올라가서 깨닫는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 친히 우리에게 내려오셔서 알려 주시는 것입니다.It is not that I climb up to God and figure him out. It is that God himself comes down to us and makes it known.

그러면 여기에서 말하는 "은혜로 주신 것들"이 무엇입니까. 하나님께서 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 베푸신 구원의 은혜 전체를 말합니다. 그런데 그 모든 은혜의 중심이 무엇이며, 그것을 푸는 열쇠가 무엇입니까. 바로 십자가에 못 박히신 예수 그리스도이신 것입니다.Then what are these things he has freely given? It means the whole grace of salvation that God has poured out on us in Christ. But what is the center of all that grace, and what is the key that opens it? It is Jesus Christ, crucified.

그러므로 성령께서 주시는 확신은 "내 생각이 옳다"는 막연한 자신감이 아닙니다. "십자가에 달리신 저 예수 그리스도가 나를 위한 하나님의 지혜요 은혜다" 하는 깨달음인 것입니다.So the assurance the Spirit gives is not a vague confidence that my own thinking is right. It is the realization that Jesus Christ, hanging on that cross, is God's wisdom and grace for me.

그리고 여기에서 한 걸음 더 나아갑니다. 알게 하신 것으로 끝나지 않았습니다. 그다음 절을 보십시오. "우리가 이것을 말하거니와" (고전 2:13) 하고 이어집니다. 알게 하신 그것을 말씀으로 전하게 하셨다는 것입니다. 그리고 바울은 그것을 사람의 지혜가 가르친 말로 전한 것이 아니라 성령께서 가르치신 것으로 전하였다고 말합니다.And here it goes one step further. It did not end with making it known. Look at the next verse: “This is what we speak” (1 Cor 2:13). What the Spirit made known, he also had proclaimed in words. And Paul says he did not speak it in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit.

그렇습니다. 복음은 사람들이 자기 머리로 하나님을 만들어낸 다음, 그것을 그럴듯하게 적어 놓은 기록이 아닙니다.The gospel is not a record of people inventing God with their own minds and then writing it down convincingly.

성경은 이렇게 기록 하기를, 예언은 언제든지 사람의 뜻으로 낸 것이 아니요 오직 성령의 감동하심을 받은 사람들이 하나님께 받아 말한 것이라고 하였습니다 (벧후 1:21).The Scripture records this: prophecy never came from the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet 1:21).

그리고 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그 성령께서는 옛날 선지자들과 사도들에게만 역사하시고 사라지신 분이 아니십니다. 말씀을 알게 하시고 전하게 하신 성령과, 오늘 그 말씀을 듣는 우리 마음에 역사하시는 성령은 다른 분이 아니십니다. 같은 성령이신 것입니다.And dear brothers and sisters, that Spirit is not one who worked only in the prophets and apostles long ago and then disappeared. The Spirit who made the word known and had it proclaimed, and the Spirit who works in our hearts as we hear that word today, are not two different persons. He is the same Spirit.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그러므로 말씀과 성령을 떼어 놓아서는 안 되는 것입니다. 성령께서는 성경에 없는 새 복음을 덧붙이시는 분이 아니십니다. 이미 주어진 십자가의 복음을 살아 계신 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들이게 하시는 분이십니다.Dear brothers and sisters, therefore we must never separate the word from the Spirit. The Spirit does not add some new gospel that is not in the Bible. He makes us receive the gospel of the cross, already given, as the living word of God.

하나님께서 말씀만 우리 앞에 놓아두시고 이제 너희 힘으로 알아서 믿으라 하지 않으셨습니다. 말씀을 주신 그 성령께서 그 말씀과 함께 역사하시며 닫힌 마음을 여시는 것입니다.God did not simply place the word before us and say, now believe it by your own strength. The very Spirit who gave the word works together with that word and opens the closed heart.

그러므로 우리는 하나님을 찾아낸 사람들이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 자신을 알게 하신 사람들인 것입니다.Therefore we are not people who found God. We are people to whom God made himself known.

3. 성령께서 그 말씀을 받아들이고 분별하게 하십니다

그런데 여기에서 마지막 질문이 남습니다.But one last question remains.

하나님의 지혜가 말씀으로 이렇게 분명하게 전해졌다면, 왜 모든 사람이 그것을 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들이지는 않는 것입니까. 왜 똑같은 십자가의 복음을 듣고서 어떤 사람은 어리석다고 하고, 어떤 사람은 그 말씀 앞에 자기 인생을 맡기는 것입니까.If the wisdom of God has been proclaimed so clearly in the word, why does not everyone receive it as the word of God? Why is it that people hear the very same gospel of the cross, and one calls it foolishness while another entrusts his whole life to it?

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Scripture says.

"육에 속한 사람은 하나님의 성령의 일들을 받지 아니하나니 이는 그것들이 그에게는 어리석게 보임이요 또 그는 그것들을 알 수도 없나니 그러한 일은 영적으로 분별되기 때문이라" (고전 2:14).The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. He cannot understand them, because they are discerned only through the Spirit (1 Cor 2:14).

여기에 나오는 "육에 속한 사람"이라는 말을 오해하지 마시기 바랍니다. 머리가 나쁜 사람이라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 배우지 못한 사람이라는 뜻도 아닙니다. 성령이 함께하지 않는 사람이라는 뜻인 것입니다.Do not misunderstand the phrase, the person without the Spirit. It does not mean a person who is slow. It does not mean a person who has no education. It means a person with whom the Spirit is not present.

바울은 이렇게 말하지 않습니다. 머리가 부족해서입니까. 아닙니다. 교육을 덜 받아서입니까. 아닙니다. 설명을 충분히 듣지 못해서입니까. 그것만의 문제가 아닙니다. 본문은 그러한 일이 영적으로 분별되기 때문이라고 말씀하십니다.Paul does not say it this way. Is it because their minds are weak? Is it because they had less schooling? Is it because they did not hear enough explanation? That is not the whole problem. The text says it is because such things are discerned only through the Spirit.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 제가 신앙생활을 해 오면서 참으로 신기하게 여겨 온 일이 하나 있습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, there is one thing I have found truly amazing through my years of walking with the Lord.

하나님의 말씀은 성도라면 누구나 알아듣는다는 것입니다. 세상에서 얼마나 배웠는가와 아무 상관이 없습니다. 학교를 오래 다니신 분도 알아들으시고, 형편이 어려워 배우지 못하신 분도 똑같이 알아들으십니다. 아무리 어려운 설교라도 그렇습니다. 제가 부족하여 말이 길고 어려웠던 주일에도, 성도님들은 그 말씀을 아멘으로 받으셨습니다.It is that any believer can understand the word of God. It has nothing to do with how much schooling you had in this world. Those who studied for many years understand it, and those who could not study because life was hard understand it just the same. This is true even with a difficult sermon. Even on the Sundays when I fell short and my words were long and hard, the saints received that word with amen.

그런데 참 이상한 일이 있습니다. 오히려 많이 배웠다고 하는 분들이 그 말씀을 받아들이지 못하는 것을 보게 됩니다. 머리가 나빠서가 아닙니다. 문장을 못 알아들어서도 아닙니다. 그 뜻을 설명해 보라고 하면 저보다 더 잘 설명하실 분도 계십니다. 그런데 받아들이지를 못하시는 것입니다.But here is a strange thing. It is often those who are said to be highly educated who cannot receive that word. It is not because their minds are weak. It is not because they cannot follow the sentences. If you asked some of them to explain the meaning, they could explain it better than I could. And yet they cannot receive it.

저는 그 모습을 보면서 이렇게 생각하게 되었습니다.Watching this, I came to think in this way.

말씀은 영적인 것이구나. 영적인 하나님의 말씀을 받아들이는 일은 사람의 이성이나 지식이 만들어낼 수 있는 일이 아니구나.The word is spiritual. Receiving the spiritual word of God is not something that human reason or knowledge can produce.

세상에서 아무리 지혜롭다 하는 사람도 성령께서 마음을 열어 주시지 않으면 십자가를 어리석게 봅니다. 그러나 성령께서 마음을 여시면, 배우지 못하신 분도 연로하신 분도 십자가에 달리신 그리스도를 자기를 위한 하나님의 지혜로 알아보는 것입니다.Even the one the world calls wisest will see the cross as foolishness unless the Spirit opens his heart. But when the Spirit opens the heart, the one who never had schooling and the one who is very old will recognize Christ on the cross as the wisdom of God for them.

그렇습니다. 오늘 본문이 바로 그것을 말씀하고 있는 것입니다. 그러한 일은 영적으로 분별되기 때문입니다.This is exactly what today's passage is saying. Because such things are discerned only through the Spirit.

한 가지 예를 들어 보겠습니다.Let me give one example.

"예수님께서 십자가에 달리셨다." 누구나 이 문장을 배울 수 있습니다. 교회에 조금만 다녀도 압니다. 시험지에 "예수님은 어디에서 돌아가셨습니까" 하고 나오면 "십자가에서 돌아가셨습니다" 하고 정답을 쓸 수도 있습니다. 이것은 주일학교 아이도 씁니다.Jesus was hung on a cross. Anyone can learn that sentence. If you come to church even a little while, you know it. If a test asked, where did Jesus die, you could write the correct answer: he died on the cross. Even a Sunday school child can write that.

그런데 어느 날 내 죄가 너무 무겁게 느껴집니다. 지나온 세월에 지은 잘못이 밤에 잠을 못 이루게 합니다. 하나님 앞에 나아갈 자격이 도무지 없다고 느껴집니다.But then one day my sin feels unbearably heavy. The wrongs of past years keep me awake at night. I feel I have no right at all to come before God.

바로 그때 성경이 이렇게 말씀하시는 것을 듣게 됩니다.And it is right then that you hear the Scripture speak like this.

"그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다" (사 53:5).He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed (Isa 53:5).

내 허물 때문에 그가 찔리셨습니다. 내 죄악 때문에 그가 상하셨습니다. 내가 받아야 할 징계를 그가 대신 받으셨습니다.He was pierced because of my transgressions. He was crushed because of my iniquities. He took the punishment that should have fallen on me.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이것을 참으로 깨달은 사람은 더 이상 따지고 분석하는 자리에만 머물러 있을 수 없습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, the one who truly realizes this can no longer stay only in the place of arguing and analyzing.

주님께서 십자가에서 돌아가신 것이 나 때문이었구나. 나를 대신하여 찔리시고 상하셨구나.So it was because of me that the Lord died on the cross. He was pierced and crushed in my place.

그것을 깨달은 사람의 입에서 나오는 것은 감사입니다. 감복인 것입니다.What comes out of the mouth of one who realizes this is thanksgiving. It is a heart moved to the depths.

그리고 바로 그 자리에서 "그 십자가가 나를 위한 하나님의 지혜요 은혜입니다. 그리스도께서 나를 위하여 죽으셨으니 나는 그분께 나를 맡기겠습니다" 하고 고백하는 것은, 시험지에 정답을 쓰는 것과 결코 같은 일이 아닌 것입니다.And to confess in that very place, that cross is God's wisdom and grace for me, Christ died for me, so I will entrust myself to him, is never the same thing as writing the correct answer on a test.

그런데 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 여기까지 오면 우리 마음에 한 가지 질문이 조용히 올라옵니다.But dear brothers and sisters, when we come this far, one question rises quietly in our hearts.

그러면 나는 어느 쪽입니까. 나는 이 말씀을 받아들인 사람입니까, 아니면 아직도 이 말씀 밖에 서 있는 사람입니까.Then which side am I on? Am I one who has received this word, or am I still standing outside of it?

오늘 본문은 우리를 그 질문 앞에 세워 놓고 그냥 두지 않으십니다. 바로 다음 절에서 대답해 주십니다.Today's passage does not set us before that question and leave us there. In the very next verse it gives the answer.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Scripture says.

"신령한 자는 모든 것을 판단하나 자기는 아무에게도 판단을 받지 아니하느니라 누가 주의 마음을 알아서 주를 가르치겠느냐 그러나 우리가 그리스도의 마음을 가졌느니라" (고전 2:15-16).The spiritual person makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to merely human judgment. For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:15-16).

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 말씀을 들으셨습니까.Dear brothers and sisters, did you hear this word?

우리가 그리스도의 마음을 가졌느니라.We have the mind of Christ.

육에 속한 사람은 이 말을 알아듣지 못합니다. 무슨 소리냐고 할 것입니다. 어리석다고 할 것입니다. 그러나 성경이 오늘 우리에게 이렇게 증거하고 계시는 것입니다.The person without the Spirit cannot understand these words. He will say, what are you talking about. He will call it foolish. But the Scripture is testifying this to us today.

내가 나를 두고 하는 말이 아닙니다. 내 느낌이 그렇다는 것도 아닙니다. 성경이 우리를 두고 그렇게 증거하십니다.This is not something I am saying about myself. It is not that this is how I feel. The Scripture testifies this about us.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이 말씀이 얼마나 놀랍습니까. 우리가 단지 그리스도를 안다고 하지 않으셨습니다. 그리스도에 대하여 배웠다고 하지도 않으셨습니다. 말씀은 우리가 그리스도의 마음을 가졌다고 하셨습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, how amazing this word is. It did not say we merely know Christ. It did not say we have learned about Christ. The word says we have the mind of Christ.

그러면 그리스도의 마음이 무엇입니까.Then what is the mind of Christ?

조금 전에 우리가 함께 읽지 않았습니까. 나를 대신하여 찔리시는 마음입니다. 나를 대신하여 상하시는 마음입니다. 내가 받아야 할 징계를 대신 지고 십자가에 달리시는 마음입니다.Did we not read it together a moment ago? It is the heart that is pierced in my place. It is the heart that is crushed in my place. It is the heart that carries the punishment I deserved and hangs on the cross.

그렇게까지 나를 사랑하시는 마음인 것입니다.It is a heart that loves me that much.

그리고 성경은 지금 주님의 그 마음을 우리가 가졌다고 하시는 것입니다.And the Scripture is saying right now that we have that heart of the Lord.

그리고 그 마음을 알게 되니 나 자신을 보는 눈도 달라졌습니다. 전에는 내 죄와 실패만 보였습니다. 나는 안 되는 사람이다, 나는 버림받을 사람이다 하고 생각했습니다. 그러나 이제 십자가를 바라보며 이렇게 고백하게 됩니다.And once I came to know that heart, the way I see myself changed as well. Before, I saw only my sin and my failures. I thought, I am a hopeless person, I am someone who will be cast away. But now, looking at the cross, I come to confess this.

"나는 주님께 버림받은 사람이 아닙니다. 주님께서 나를 위하여 자기 생명을 내어 주실 만큼 사랑하신 사람입니다."I am not one cast away by the Lord. I am one whom the Lord loved so much that he gave his own life for me.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 이것은 내가 나를 높이는 말이 아닙니다. 내가 사랑받을 만해서 주님께서 죽으신 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 사랑받을 자격이 없는 나를 그렇게까지 사랑하셨다는 것, 그 은혜를 높이는 고백인 것입니다.Dear brothers and sisters, this is not me lifting up myself. The Lord did not die because I was worthy of love. It is a confession that lifts up his grace, that he loved me that much when I was not worthy of love at all.

그러니 우리가 십자가를 하나님의 지혜로 보게 되었다는 것은, 내가 밖에 서서 십자가를 구경하다가 생각을 바꾸었다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 내가 그리스도 안에 있고 그리스도께서 내 안에 계시기 때문에, 그분이 나를 사랑하신 그 사랑을 내가 알아보게 된 것입니다.So when we came to see the cross as the wisdom of God, it does not mean that I stood outside watching the cross and then changed my mind. It is because I am in Christ and Christ is in me, that I have come to recognize the love with which he loved me.

성령을 받았다는 것은 그리스도 안에 있다는 것이고, 그리스도 안에 있다는 것은 아버지 안에 있다는 것입니다. 이 얼마나 큰 은혜입니까.To have received the Spirit is to be in Christ, and to be in Christ is to be in the Father. How great is this grace.

다만 한 가지는 조심해야 하겠습니다. 그리스도의 마음을 가졌다는 것이 내 판단은 무엇이든 옳다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 눈물을 많이 흘렸다고 해서 반드시 분별한 것도 아니고, 조용히 받아들이시는 분에게 성령의 역사가 없는 것도 아닙니다. 차이는 감정의 크기에 있지 않은 것입니다.But we must be careful about one thing. Having the mind of Christ does not mean that whatever I judge is right. Shedding many tears does not necessarily mean one has discerned, and the one who receives quietly is not without the work of the Spirit. The difference does not lie in the size of the emotion.

세상이 어리석다고 비웃는 저 십자가를, 나를 위한 하나님의 지혜와 사랑으로 바라보는 눈. 그것이 그리스도의 마음을 가진 사람의 눈인 것입니다.Eyes that look at that cross, which the world laughs at as foolish, and see it as God's wisdom and love for me. Those are the eyes of one who has the mind of Christ.

그렇습니다. 성령께서는 우리에게 무엇이든 다 안다는 자만심을 주시는 것이 아닙니다. 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 하나님의 지혜로 받아들이는 마음을 주시는 것입니다.The Spirit does not give us the pride of thinking we know everything. He gives us a heart that receives Christ crucified as the wisdom of God.

그러므로 말씀의 뜻을 이해한다고 해서 모두에게 같은 믿음이 생기는 것은 아닙니다. 믿음은 설명과 증명만으로 만들어지는 것이 아닙니다.Therefore understanding the meaning of the word does not produce the same faith in everyone. Faith is not made by explanation and proof alone.

그런데 이것은 제 생각이 아닙니다. 바울이 이 장 앞에서 자기 목적을 이미 밝혀 놓았습니다.But this is not my own idea. Paul already stated his purpose earlier in this chapter.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.The Scripture says.

"너희 믿음이 사람의 지혜에 있지 아니하고 다만 하나님의 능력에 있게 하려 하였노라" (고전 2:5).so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power (1 Cor 2:5).

여기서 말하는 하나님의 능력은 내 마음속에 뜨거운 감정을 넣어 주시는 힘만을 뜻하지 않습니다. 십자가의 복음이 계시되고, 말씀으로 전해지고, 성령으로 받아들여져 마침내 믿음이 생기는 그 전 과정에 나타나는 하나님의 능력인 것입니다.The power of God spoken of here does not mean only a force that puts warm feelings into my heart. It is the power of God shown in the whole process, as the gospel of the cross is revealed, proclaimed in the word, received by the Spirit, and at last faith is born.

인간의 머리로 하는 논증은 "이 말이 옳구나" 하는 데까지 우리를 데려갈 수 있습니다. 그러나 성령께서는 "십자가의 이 말씀이 하나님의 지혜이며, 하나님께서 이 말씀으로 나를 부르고 계시는구나" 하고 믿게 하시는 것입니다.Argument made with the human mind can take us as far as saying, this makes sense. But the Spirit makes us believe: this word of the cross is the wisdom of God, and God is calling me through this word.

그렇다고 생각하지 말라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 질문하지 말라는 뜻도 아닙니다. 성경은 오히려 베뢰아 사람들을 칭찬합니다.This does not mean we should stop thinking. It does not mean we should stop asking. In fact the Scripture praises the people of Berea.

그들은 데살로니가에 있는 사람들보다 더 너그러워서, 간절한 마음으로 말씀을 받으면서 이것이 그러한가 하여 날마다 성경을 상고하였습니다 (행 17:11). 그리고 그다음 절은 그들 가운데 믿는 사람이 많았다고 말합니다.They were more open than those in Thessalonica. They received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see whether it was so. And the next verse says that many of them believed (Acts 17:11).

그러니 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 믿음과 살핌은 서로 원수가 아닌 것입니다. 믿음은 눈을 감는 것이 아닙니다. 마음을 열어 말씀을 듣고, 성경을 펴서 살피는 것입니다.So dear brothers and sisters, faith and examination are not enemies. Faith is not closing your eyes. It is opening your heart to hear the word, and opening the Bible to examine it.

다만 그들이 성경을 살핀 공로로 믿음을 만들어낸 것은 아닙니다. 성령께서 그들이 듣고 살핀 바로 그 말씀을 통하여 마음을 여시고 믿게 하신 것입니다.Yet they did not produce faith by the merit of examining the Scriptures. The Spirit opened their hearts and made them believe through the very word they heard and examined.

그러니 성경을 아무리 많이 살펴보아도, 사람의 설명 그 자체가 내 마음속에 십자가를 믿는 믿음을 만들어내지는 못합니다.So no matter how much we examine the Bible, human explanation by itself cannot create in my heart the faith that believes the cross.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 여기에서 우리가 처음에 보았던 그 나무로 다시 돌아가겠습니다.Dear brothers and sisters, let us now return to the tree we looked at in the beginning.

우리가 믿는 데에는 이유가 있습니다. 그 이유들은 중요합니다. 이유와 설명과 증거는 가지와 같습니다. 가지에서 잎이 납니다. 열매도 맺힙니다. 가지가 없는 나무는 없습니다.There are reasons why we believe. Those reasons are important. Reasons and explanations and evidence are like branches. Leaves grow on branches. Fruit is borne there too. There is no tree without branches.

그러나 가지는 뿌리가 아닌 것입니다.But branches are not the root.

가지는 흔들립니다. 어떤 질문에는 오늘 대답하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 내가 알고 있던 설명이 사실은 부족했다는 것을 나중에 알게 될 수도 있습니다. 그래도 나무가 서 있는 것은 가지가 모든 바람을 다 이겨냈기 때문이 아닙니다. 뿌리가 붙들고 있기 때문인 것입니다.There may be a question I cannot answer today. Later I may find that the explanation I had was not enough after all. Even so, the tree stands, not because the branches won against every wind, but because the root is holding on.

이유는 가지입니다. 삼위 하나님이 뿌리이십니다. 하나님께서는 말씀 안에서 십자가의 그리스도를 보여 주시고, 성령께서는 그 말씀을 우리 마음에 밝혀 믿게 하시는 것입니다.The reasons are the branches. The triune God is the root. God shows us Christ crucified within his word, and the Holy Spirit shines that word into our hearts and makes us believe.

그러므로 어떤 질문에 대답하지 못했다고 해서 "내 믿음이 다 잘못된 것은 아닐까" 하고 자신을 정죄하실 필요가 없습니다. 이 믿음을 내가 만들어낸 것이 아니듯이, 내 힘만으로 붙들고 서 있는 것도 아니기 때문입니다.So when you cannot answer some question, you do not need to condemn yourself, wondering whether your whole faith is wrong. Just as you did not create this faith, you are not standing by your own strength either.

적용

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 그러면 우리는 이 말씀을 가지고 이번 한 주간을 어떻게 살아야 하겠습니까.Dear brothers and sisters, how then shall we live this coming week with this word?

먼저 우리 자신에게 이 말씀을 적용해 보십시오.First, let us apply this word to ourselves.

살다 보면 대답하지 못하는 질문을 만나게 됩니다. 어디선가 이상한 이야기를 듣기도 하고, 누군가 성경을 그럴듯하게 공격하는 것을 보기도 합니다. 그럴 때 마음이 무너지실 필요가 없습니다. 모든 질문에 답할 수 있는 능력이 내 믿음의 뿌리는 아니기 때문입니다.As we live, we meet questions we cannot answer. We hear strange claims somewhere, or we see someone attacking the Bible in a convincing way. In those moments your heart does not need to fall apart. The ability to answer every question is not the root of your faith.

그렇다고 질문을 피하지는 마십시오. 공부하십시오. 찾아보십시오. 성경을 살피십시오. 그것은 믿음이 약해서 하는 일이 아니라 믿음이 살아 있어서 하는 일인 것입니다.But do not avoid the questions either. Study. Look it up. Examine the Scriptures. You do this not because your faith is weak, but because your faith is alive.

다만 그 모든 수고 끝에 우리가 앉아야 할 자리가 어디인지를 잊지 마시기 바랍니다. 말씀 앞입니다. 거기서 이렇게 기도하십시오. "성령님, 이 말씀 안에서 십자가의 그리스도를 저에게 다시 보여 주옵소서."Only do not forget where we must sit down after all that labor. Before the word. And there pray like this: Holy Spirit, show me Christ crucified once again within this word.

그리고 흔들린다고 해서 그것을 곧 믿음이 없다는 증거로 여기지 마십시오. 살아 있는 나무도 바람에 흔들립니다. 흔들리지 않는 척하는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라, 흔들릴 때 어디로 돌아가느냐 하는 것이 중요한 것입니다.And do not take your shaking as proof that you have no faith. A living tree also shakes in the wind. What matters is not pretending you do not shake, but where you return to when you do.

이제 우리 집을 한번 생각해 보십시오.Now think for a moment about our homes.

자녀들이, 손주들이 어려운 질문을 할 때가 있습니다. 영어로 물어와서 말문이 막힐 때도 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리 마음에 두 가지 마음이 올라옵니다. 이겨야겠다는 마음과, 덮어야겠다는 마음입니다. 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 둘 다 아닌 것입니다.There are times when our children and grandchildren ask hard questions. Sometimes they ask in English and we are left without words. In those moments two impulses rise in us. The impulse to win, and the impulse to cover it up. Dear brothers and sisters, neither one is right.

논쟁으로 이기려고 하지 마십시오. 야단쳐서 덮으려고도 하지 마십시오. 아는 것은 성실히 답해 주시고, 모르는 것은 "할아버지도 잘 모르겠구나, 같이 찾아보자" 하고 함께 찾아보시기 바랍니다.Do not try to win by argument. Do not try to cover it up by scolding. Answer faithfully what you know, and for what you do not know, say, grandpa does not know that either, let us look it up together, and then search it out together.

왜 그렇습니까. 우리가 그들의 질문에 대답할 수는 있어도, 그들의 마음에 믿음을 만들어 줄 수는 없기 때문입니다. 그 일은 성령께서 하시는 하나님의 일이기 때문입니다. 그러니 답해 주고, 함께 말씀을 읽고, 그리고 기도하십시오. "성령님, 이 아이가 십자가를 어리석은 이야기가 아니라 자기를 위한 하나님의 지혜로 받아들이게 하옵소서."Because we can answer their questions, but we cannot create faith in their hearts. That is God's work, done by the Holy Spirit. So answer them, read the word together with them, and then pray. Holy Spirit, let this child receive the cross not as a foolish story, but as the wisdom of God for himself.

그리고 우리 교회를 생각해 보십시오.And now think about our church.

우리는 이웃에게 복음을 전합니다. 설명합니다. 초대합니다. 때로는 몇 해를 기다리기도 합니다. 그런데 아무리 잘 설명해도 그 마음이 열리지 않을 때가 있습니다. 그때 낙심하지 마시기 바랍니다. 우리가 할 일을 못 해서가 아닙니다. 마음을 여시는 분이 따로 계시기 때문입니다.We share the gospel with our neighbors. Sometimes we wait for years. And yet, no matter how well we explain, there are times when the heart does not open. In those times, do not lose heart. It is not because we failed to do our part. It is because there is Another who opens the heart.

이것은 이 강단에 서 있는 저에게도 그대로 해당되는 말씀입니다. 설교자가 사람을 변화시키는 것이 아닙니다. 저는 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도를 충실히 전할 뿐이고, 그 말씀으로 역사하시는 분은 성령이신 것입니다.This word applies just as much to me, standing in this pulpit. It is not the preacher who changes people. I only faithfully proclaim Christ crucified, and the One who works through that word is the Holy Spirit.

그러니 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 우리가 할 일은 이것입니다. 전하고, 기도하고, 기다리는 것입니다.So dear brothers and sisters, this is our work. To proclaim, to pray, and to wait.

결론

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 오늘 우리가 함께 본 것이 이것입니다.Dear brothers and sisters, this is what we have seen together today.

하나님의 일은 하나님의 영만 아십니다. 우리가 올라가서 알아낸 것이 아닙니다. 그런데 하나님께서 성령으로 십자가의 그리스도를 보여 주셨습니다. 그리고 그 말씀을 전하게 하셨습니다. 마침내 그 말씀을 우리로 받아들이게 하신 분도 같은 성령이신 것입니다.Only the Spirit of God knows the things of God. We did not climb up and find them out. And yet God showed us Christ crucified by his Spirit. And he had that word proclaimed. And the One who at last made us receive that word is the same Spirit.

그러니 이 믿음은 우리가 혼자 만들어낸 것이 아닙니다. 부모님께 말씀을 배우고 교회 안에서 자랐을 수는 있습니다. 그러나 그것만으로 이 믿음을 다 설명할 수는 없는 것입니다. 하나님께서 성령을 주셨고, 그 성령께서 십자가의 그리스도를 믿게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 이 믿음은 하나님께 받은 은혜인 것입니다.So this faith is not something we made on our own. You may have learned the word from your parents and grown up in the church. But that alone cannot explain this faith. God gave the Spirit, and that Spirit made us believe in Christ crucified. Therefore this faith is grace received from God.

어느 조용한 저녁에 다시 그 생각이 찾아올지 모릅니다. "나는 왜 이것을 믿고 있는가." 그때 오늘 말씀을 기억하시기 바랍니다.On some quiet evening that thought may come again. Why am I believing this? When it does, remember today's word.

그렇다면 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 우리에게 남는 것이 무엇이겠습니까. 자랑이겠습니까. 아닙니다. 감사인 것입니다.Then, dear brothers and sisters, what is left for us? Boasting? No. It is thanksgiving.

내가 똑똑해서 깨달은 것이라면 자랑할 수 있습니다. 내가 열심을 내어 얻어낸 것이라면 내세울 수 있습니다. 그러나 받은 것이라면, 우리가 드릴 것은 감사밖에 없는 것입니다.If I understood because I was clever, I could boast. If I obtained it by my own zeal, I could put it forward. But if I received it, then all we have to offer is thanksgiving.

감사는 그저 기분이 좋다는 말이 아닙니다. 내가 옳았다는 만족도 아닙니다. 내가 보지 못할 때 보여 주시고, 듣지 못할 때 들려주시며, 믿지 못할 때 십자가를 믿게 하신 그 은혜 앞에 엎드리는 것입니다.Thanksgiving is not merely feeling good. It is not the satisfaction of being proved right. It is bowing low before the grace that showed me when I could not see, spoke to me when I could not hear, and made me believe the cross when I could not believe.

오늘 이 자리에 앉아 하나님의 말씀을 알아듣고 계신 것, 그것이 이미 은혜입니다. 이 말씀이 나에게 하시는 말씀인 줄 아시는 것, 그것이 성령께서 하신 일입니다. 그러니 감사하십시오. 우리를 깨닫게 하시고 믿음을 주신 하나님께 감사하십시오.That you are sitting here today and understanding the word of God is already grace. That you know this word is spoken to you, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. Give thanks to the God who made us understand and gave us faith.

그리고 사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 저는 오늘 이 강단에서 다시 선포합니다.And dear brothers and sisters, today from this pulpit I proclaim it again.

예수 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다.Jesus Christ was crucified for us.

그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이었습니다. 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리가 나음을 받았습니다 (사 53:5).He was pierced for our transgressions. And by his wounds we are healed (Isa 53:5).

세상은 그 십자가를 어리석다고 합니다. 그러나 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜인 것입니다 (고전 1:24).The world calls that cross foolishness. But to us he is the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:24).

믿을 이유는 많습니다. 그러나 그 이유가 우리의 뿌리는 아닙니다. 하나님이 우리의 뿌리이신 것입니다. 가지가 흔들려도 뿌리가 붙들고 있으면 나무는 서 있습니다.There are many reasons to believe. But those reasons are not our root. God is our root. Though the branches shake, if the root is holding, the tree stands.

그러므로 흔들리는 날에도 말씀 앞으로 돌아오셔서 이 십자가를 다시 바라보시기 바랍니다.So even on the days when you are shaken, come back before the word and look again upon this cross.
