Beloved, as you know, on weekdays I am a man who designs buildings. When I review a design, I do not look only at the finishes that the eye can see. How fine the marble is, how beautiful the lighting is, those come later. First I look at what is holding that building up. I look at where the foundation is laid, and what the columns are standing on.

No matter how splendid the finishes are, without a foundation that building cannot stand. Faith is the same. What matters today is not how impressive my faith looks, but what my faith is standing on.

So today I want to ask you one question. Beloved, what is your faith standing on? Let us read today's passage together. The Scripture says.

"형제들아 내가 너희에게 나아가 하나님의 증거를 전할 때에 말과 지혜의 아름다운 것으로 아니하였나니" (고린도전서 2:1)"And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God." (1 Corinthians 2:1)

2:2)"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2)

2:3)"And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling." (1 Corinthians 2:3)

"내 말과 내 전도함이 설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고 다만 성령의 나타나심과 능력으로 하여" (고린도전서 2:4)"And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:" (1 Corinthians 2:4)

2:5)"That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." (1 Corinthians 2:5)

In the church at Corinth there were people who talked like this. "I belong to Paul. I belong to Apollos." They looked at a man, they looked at his way with words, and they tried to build their faith on a man. Paul asks them a question.

The Scripture says.

1:13)"Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?" (1 Corinthians 1:13)

That is why Paul, when he came to Corinth, laid down excellency of speech and of wisdom. Why did he do that? The first is this. Because God spoke first.

What did Paul preach when he came to Corinth? Not his own ideas. Not his own name. Verse 1 calls it "the testimony of God." What is a testimony?

It is telling exactly what the apostle Paul himself saw and heard. Paul did not preach a story he had made up; he testified to what God Himself had spoken and what God Himself had done. And in the very next verse he tells us the center of that testimony. It is "Jesus Christ, and him crucified." Yes.

The testimony of God is Christ crucified. In a city that loved eloquence, Paul determined to know nothing except this. Everything else is secondary; it has nothing to do with life. Beloved, why do we open the Bible? It is not simply reading a book.

It is sitting down in the place where God speaks to me. God, who spoke long ago through the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us through His Son, and He still speaks today. There is One who speaks, and there is I who listen. God is not someone who sends notices from far away. The God we believe in is a Father who speaks to me.

Many of you open the Bible every morning at dawn. What happens at that moment? God speaks to you right there. The Bible you have read all your life is that very place given to us. No ruler in this world speaks to us like this.

They are busy, and they are far too high to come down to us. But the God who made heaven and earth speaks to me. Therefore we are people who receive the Word of God. How blessed we are! But when we read or hear the Bible, who guarantees that the word we receive is the Word of God?

The testimony of the church helps us. The testimony of believers who have held on to this Word for two thousand years helps us. Many evidences help us. But the One who finally guarantees the Word of God is God Himself. For the only One qualified to bear witness to God's Word is God alone.

Then what does God say to us? The Scripture says.

"만일 우리가 사람들의 증언을 받을진대 하나님의 증거는 더욱 크도다 하나님의 증거는 이것이니 그의 아들에 대하여 증언하신 것이니라" (요한일서 5:9)"If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son." (1 John 5:9)

5:11)"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." (1 John 5:11)

God not only testifies of His Son; by the Holy Spirit He also makes us believe that testimony and rely on it. For that is the true heart of love of the God who speaks to us. And once we stand on the foundation of the Word, the many evidences God grants us become the best supports of our faith. Our eyes begin to see the order, the harmony, and the majesty of the Word. We begin to see a heavenly teaching that has not the slightest smell of earth.

The more we read along in the Word, from Genesis to Revelation, the more we see the one way of salvation that God promised and is bringing to pass. It is a way in which God fulfills what He promised, and with what He has fulfilled He promises again. And that way leads only to our Lord Jesus Christ. Just as the risen Lord, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, explained the things concerning Himself, the whole Bible points to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Beloved, we do not believe in a way of salvation that man has made. We believe in God, who is Himself the only way of salvation. Man's success, man's morality, man's religious zeal, none of these can be that way. A person who wanders outside that way looking for another way is like someone walking in a maze with no exit. We receive God's salvation, which God accomplished in Christ and testified to Himself.

So this is our confession. Because we trust the God who is still speaking today, our faith stands not in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. That is the gospel we believe.

Then what did the apostle Paul look like when he came to preach that great gospel? Look at verse 3. "And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling." Paul, a Jew, left Athens and came into Corinth alone. In a strange city he made tents to earn his living, and he preached the gospel.

The glory of the gospel and the weakness of the messenger were in Paul at the same time. The man who was carrying the mysteries of heaven was weak, afraid, and trembling greatly. Beloved, the weakness and trembling Paul felt are not strange to us at all. We too have had days when we had to speak up for something in a strange place, with clumsy words, with a trembling heart. Sometimes we came home having said less than half of what we wanted to say.

So we, of all people, are the ones who can best understand Paul's weakness and trembling. Our God speaks in majestic sentences, and He also speaks in plain words. But we do not look at the beauty of the expression; we look at the wisdom and the glory of the God who speaks within it. The power of the Word is not borrowed from the splendor of its sentences. Think about it.

The mysteries of heaven have been handed down in simple language. A farmer sowing seed, a lost sheep, a son who left home, stories even a child can understand, and in them the secrets of the kingdom of God. That is why the crowds who heard Jesus were astonished at His teaching. Not because His words were brilliant oratory. It was because our Lord's words carried a holy authority that could not be found in any man.

Yes. Even plain words, if the truth of God is in them, stir a greater reverence than any eloquence in the world. What does that tell us? That the power does not come from skill with words, but from the truth of God itself. People took Peter and John for unlearned and ignorant men.

But they marveled at their boldness. And thousands who heard that gospel believed. Why did God do it this way? If the gospel had been delivered with dazzling eloquence, some people would have said, "The people were fooled by fine speech." But God left no room for that.

He made sure that no flesh should glory in His presence. It was not Paul's eloquence at all that built the faith of the Corinthians. What skill with words could there be in the halting speech of Paul, a foreigner? Paul was weak and afraid, and yet he preached Jesus Christ, crucified and risen. And the Holy Spirit, through that halting preaching of Paul, made them believe in Christ.

So Paul says this in verse 4. "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power." Yes. The apostle Paul preached the gospel only in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. The Scripture says.

"우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라" (고린도후서 4:7)"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Here the earthen vessel means a person. Paul, weak and afraid and trembling, was this earthen vessel, and we too are earthen vessels that hold the treasure. An earthen vessel is fragile, easily broken, an ordinary pot that gets knocked around. So was Paul, and so are we. The older we get, the better we know it.

But God has entrusted the treasure, the gospel of salvation, to this earthen vessel. The power does not come from us, yet God carries the gospel of life through weak people like us. Then what is the treasure inside? It is what Paul preached, Christ Jesus the Lord, the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Beloved, Paul was weak. But the One he preached is Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and rose from the dead. Through the preaching of weak Paul, the Holy Spirit made the people of Corinth believe in Christ. It is the same with the pulpit of our church. What holds up this pulpit is not the pastor's skill with words.

The only thing this pulpit has to boast of is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the same with the gospel we share in our clumsy words. It is not the vessel but the treasure, the gospel, that brings people to life. What holds up our faith is not the excellence of the one who preaches. It is the living Lord Jesus Christ, to whom the gospel bears witness.

Because we rely not on the messenger but on the Lord who is preached, our faith stands not in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

A great speech moves us deeply. Beautiful writing stirs our thoughts and our hearts. Yes. I do not deny it. But the Word of God knows us.

For it is the God who made me who speaks to me. God is the God who brings to pass what He has spoken, and His Word comes into the deep places of our hearts and works there. The Scripture says.

"하나님의 말씀은 살아 있고 활력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하나니" (히브리서 4:12)"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

So before the Word we see ourselves, with nothing left to hide. The thoughts I have kept hidden, even the intentions I never admitted to myself, are laid bare before the Word. And in that very Word we see Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, who is there for people like us. He is the One who knows our weakness, and yet He brings us boldly before God's throne of grace. Yes.

The Word brings us out of hiding, and then leads us straight to the throne of grace.

Think of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Three days had passed since the cross. They were leaving Jerusalem. They were walking away in despair, thinking the Lord had died on the cross and that was the end. No wonder their faces were sad, and their hope had vanished without a trace.

They had hoped He was the One who would redeem Israel, but He had been crucified and had died. Judged by human standards, the Lord's cross was a complete failure. But then the risen Lord came alongside them and walked with them. When He asked what they were talking about, they stood before the Lord Himself and explained, grieving over the Lord's death. They did not yet recognize Him.

Then the Lord opened the Scriptures to them. The Scripture says.

24:26)"Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?" (Luke 24:26)

And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. The cross they had taken for a failure was the way of salvation God had promised long ago. He opened to them the mystery of the resurrection, that only through death comes life again. That evening, when the Lord broke the bread and gave it to them, at last the disciples' eyes were opened and they recognized Him. And this is what they said to one another.

"그들이 서로 말하되 길에서 우리에게 말씀하시고 우리에게 성경을 풀어 주실 때에 우리 속에서 마음이 뜨겁지 아니하더냐 하고" (누가복음 24:32)"And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" (Luke 24:32)

Their hearts burned because of the living Word, and they recognized the Lord because the Lord opened their eyes. Then they rose up that same hour and went back to Jerusalem, where they could be seized and killed, and they told what had happened. Beloved, this is what the Word does. The cross that looked like a failure in human eyes is revealed as God's way of salvation, the risen Christ is recognized, and they go back to that dangerous place and preach the gospel at the risk of their lives.

It was the same at Pentecost. The people who heard the fisherman Peter preach asked this question.

"그들이 이 말을 듣고 마음에 찔려 베드로와 다른 사도들에게 물어 이르되 형제들아 우리가 어찌할꼬 하거늘" (사도행전 2:37)"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37)

The Word did not leave those who received it as spectators who only admired it. The gospel made them people who responded to the Word of God. On that very day when Peter preached the gospel, three thousand people received his word and were baptized. What an amazing thing this is! And when Lydia was listening to Paul, the Lord opened her heart as well.

Who does this work? The Holy Spirit, who gave us the Word, does it. The Holy Spirit reveals the glory of God in the word of the gospel. And He enlightens our hearts so that we recognize the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. For the Holy Spirit is the One who glorifies Christ and makes us rely on Him.

That is why the sheep can know the shepherd's voice. Even with countless voices of the world mixed in, the sheep pick out the shepherd's voice among them. Have you ever had one verse take hold of you strongly while you were reading the Bible? That is the voice of the Shepherd. That voice always points to the same place.

It points to Christ, who died for me and rose again. The Scripture says.

10:27)"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:" (John 10:27)

The sheep hear the shepherd's voice and follow. And to the sheep who follow, God bears witness to Himself in the midst of their lives. The Lord says.

7:17)"If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." (John 7:17)

The person who truly wants to follow God's will comes to know, in his own life, that the word which took hold of him came from God. Forgive as the Word says. Let go as the Word says. Give as the Word says. Give thanks as the Word says.

Love as the Word says. That life cannot help but change. And then God Himself proves to you, in your own life, that His Word is true. How does He show it? To the one who keeps His commandments from the heart, the Lord reveals Himself, and the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.

We come to know more and more the God who called us by His Word, as we live our lives by that Word. Yes. The testimony printed in the letters of Scripture becomes the living testimony of a life.

When we sit too long in an awkward position, or fall asleep with an arm pressed under us, the blood vessels are squeezed and the blood stops flowing to that part. Then the arm or leg grows cold, and no matter how hard we pinch it, we feel nothing. It is clearly my own limb, attached to my own body, yet it is helpless; I cannot move it or use it as I wish. This is what our spiritual condition is like when the supply of life is cut off and we grow stiff.

Just as even a building with a splendid exterior loses its life when the pipes that carry warmth through it freeze, so a heart cut off from the supply of the Word grows cold and hard.

But think of the moment when you shift your position, the blocked vessels open, and the warm blood pumped from the heart begins to flow again. At first a tingling, prickling pain rushes in, as if tens of thousands of needles were stabbing you. The "pricking of the heart" felt by the crowd who heard the gospel at Pentecost, and the spiritual pain we feel when our stubborn will and hidden intentions are exposed before the Word, are exactly like this.

But that stinging pain is the surest evidence that the dying nerves are coming back to life. When the life of the Holy Spirit is pumped powerfully into us through our spiritual arteries, warmth returns to a soul that had grown cold, and a spiritual heartbeat that had stopped begins to beat again. When the Holy Spirit breaks through the hardened vessels of our hearts and supplies life, then at last we can move again. With those very hands and feet, where the blood now flows and the feeling has come back, forgive as the Word says.

Love as the Word says.

Beloved, faith does not stay at the size of the feeling I received. Faith is relying only on Jesus Christ, who saves me. My hope is that today every one of us will come to rely on Christ more deeply. Because the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, makes us believe in the living Christ, our faith stands not in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Beloved, today we have looked at the Word of God. God Himself speaks, and He testifies of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. And God preaches the gospel of Christ through the words of weak people. And the living, working Holy Spirit leads us to Christ through that Word. These three are one road.

It is the road on which the God who speaks gives His Son, and the Spirit makes us believe in that Son. That is why our faith stands not in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. For the Holy Spirit, who is the power of God, opens our eyes to the light of the glory of God that shines in the face of our Lord. Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the increase. And that God has already laid the foundation.

The Scripture says.

3:11)"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Let me ask again. What is our faith standing on? We must look not at the finishes of the building but at the foundation. And we must realize this. The name of that foundation is Jesus Christ.

Yes. The house built on Jesus Christ, this solid foundation, does not fall, though the rain descends and the floods come and the winds blow.

Our hearts can be shaken. But there is a Savior whom God has given for us. Jesus Christ bore our sins and rose from the dead. God testifies that life is in His Son. Receive that word today.

Rely on Jesus Christ right there, in the very place where you are shaken. Only in Christ, on whom we rely, is there rest. The Lord says.

11:28)"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Let us read verse 5 once more. "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." Beloved members of One Heart Church, that your faith may stand not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God, and that the evidence of God's power may transform our lives, I pronounce this blessing upon you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
