Love Cannot Be Alone
4:7–11 · 1 John 4:7–11
Rev. Byong H. Yoo · 2026-10-11
"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." (1 John 4:7–11)

Dear brothers and sisters, “I love you” is a phrase no one can say alone. Think of a small child saying “I love you.” Those words are not spoken into empty air. The child says them looking at mom, looking at dad, looking at someone. We too spend our whole lives saying those words — to our parents, to our children, to our wives and husbands, to our friends. But what if there were no one at all to say them to? The words “I love you” always have a person they are turned toward. Love is always directed toward someone.

Yet the Bible says that God is love. We have heard this word countless times. But here we must think about one thing. Before the world was created — when there were no people, no angels, nothing at all, and only God was — whom did God, who is love, love? Whom could a God who was alone love? And if there were no one to love, could God love, could He be love? If God could begin to love someone only after He created us, then He would be a God who does love, but not a God whose very nature is love. If this question has no answer, we will never understand to the end the word “God is love.” But the Bible gives a clear answer to it. Today, in this sermon, let us search out that answer together: that God is love, that God has been love since before the foundation of the world, and that this love has come to us in person.

The Bible says:

"사랑하는 자들아 우리가 서로 사랑하자 사랑은 하나님께 속한 것이니 사랑하는 자마다 하나님께로 나서 하나님을 알고" (요한일서 4:7)"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God." (1 John 4:7)

4:8)"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." (1 John 4:8)

First, look at verse 8: “God is love.” It does not say that God has much love, or that God does love. It says God is love. What is the difference? People also have love. And what one has can also be lost. That is why people love and then stop loving, and their love grows cold. But even when love grows cold, a person is still a person. Love is something that can be in a person and then be gone. That is what a human being is. But God is not one who has love; He is love. God's very nature is love. In God, loving and being love are not different, because God, who is love, cannot fail to love. Therefore it is impossible for God to love and then stop. Nor can there be a God whose love has grown cold. Apart from love He would not be God, because God's nature is love. The Bible says:

"하나님이 우리를 사랑하시는 사랑을 우리가 알고 믿었노니 하나님은 사랑이시라 사랑 안에 거하는 자는 하나님 안에 거하고 하나님도 그 안에 거하시느니라" (요한일서 4:16)"And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." (1 John 4:16)

God is love. Keep this word in your heart and consider one thing. Love cannot be alone. Love is always directed toward someone. Go back to those words “I love you.” They are always spoken to someone other than myself. Where there is one who loves, there is one who is loved. Of course, human love is never entirely whole. We sometimes love people who will not receive our love, and we love people who have left us. Even so, that love is still directed toward someone other than myself. A love that loves only itself and is directed toward no one is not whole love.

And love is not a thing. Love does not sit somewhere or stay still. Love is someone loving someone. It is the act of a person. That is how it is for us: love is what people do. But Scripture says God does not have love; He is love. Then how is this love realized within God, who is love? The love within God is perfect love, lacking nothing, unlike ours. But what does that mean? The Bible tells us who is within God's love. The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, and the Spirit proceeds from both. To put this in the language of love: because God is love, within that love there is the love that loves, the love that is loved, and the love of relationship that makes the two one. And these three are not some activity God does. Because God is love, this love is God Himself. Each is one Person; yet together they are one single, perfect love. That is the one and only God, revealed as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is how we may summarize, as the Bible has told us, the love of God who is love, when before the creation of the world God alone was.

Think about it. Everyone knows that love is not something done alone. Yet when we think about God, we forget this. We picture a God alone in heaven and imagine that He began to love only after He made us. But that is a God we have drawn, not the God the Bible speaks of. Even human love cannot happen alone. How much more God, who is love itself! Yes — if God is love, then God was never alone from the beginning. He did not begin to love after being alone. Because He is love, He was never alone from the beginning.

Then whom did God love before the world existed? Our Lord answered. On the last night before the cross, where He was with His disciples, the Lord lifted up His eyes and prayed to the Father. In that prayer are these words. The Bible says:

"아버지여 내게 주신 자도 나 있는 곳에 나와 함께 있어 아버지께서 창세 전부터 나를 사랑하시므로 내게 주신 나의 영광을 저희로 보게 하시기를 원하옵나이다" (요한복음 17:24)"Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world." (John 17:24)

성경이 알려 주신 만큼만 보겠습니다.“For thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.” Before the foundation of the world — before the world was, before time itself began. Even then God the Father was already loving the Son. The Lord is not speaking of a newly born love. He is speaking of the essence and original pattern of a love that existed before the world. On the darkest night, with the cross ahead, the Lord spoke of the oldest love there is. That love was holding Him fast. God was never alone from the beginning. Then who was within that love? Let us look only as far as the Bible has shown us.

Dear brothers and sisters, we can see that even when He spoke to the prophets, God spoke sparingly about Himself. When He speaks, He lowers Himself to our level, like a nurse speaking to a little child. He must, because we can never fully comprehend the almighty God. Can we know God completely? We cannot. But then should we simply go on not knowing? Not that either. In Scripture God makes Himself known to us more clearly and more intimately. To pretend not to know what God has made known is not humility. We can know as much as God has made known, and we ought to know it. Why did God make known to us the love within Himself? Not so that we would merely look on at that love, but to call us into it. Therefore we must know God's will more, and know more of who God is.

This is what the Bible makes known. God is one, and within that one God are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — three. The church has called these three “Persons.” They are not three roles, nor three appearances. They are three who love, are loved, and bind one another in the relationship of love. And hold on to this: all three Persons are love. The Father is the love that loves, the Son is the love that is loved, and the Spirit is the love that makes one. The three do not divide love among themselves. Each is the whole of love. Therefore the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are each God. Now let us look at the triune God, one Person at a time.

First, God the Father. The Father is the love that gives first. The Bible says:

3:35)"The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand." (John 3:35)

사랑하는 분에게 전부를 주시는 것, 그것이 아버지이십니다.“The Father loveth the Son.” The Father does not love because He first received love from someone. Nor was the Son loved because He first did something. The Father is the love that gives first. Before we received the Father's love, before the world existed, the Father was already loving the Son. And He has given all things into His hand. To give everything to the one He loves — that is the Father.

Next is the Son. The Son is the love that receives, returns, and gives again. Did the Son only receive the Father's love? No. He returned it. How did He return it? On the way to Gethsemane the Lord said this. The Bible says:

"오직 내가 아버지를 사랑하는 것과 아버지의 명하신 대로 행하는 것을 세상으로 알게 하려 함이로라 일어나라 여기를 떠나자 하시니라" (요한복음 14:31)"But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence." (John 14:31)

By doing as the Father commanded, He loved the Father. The Son receives the Father's love, returns it to the Father, and gives that love to us as well. And the Bible speaks of the Son this way:

"이는 하나님의 영광의 광채시요 그 본체의 형상이시라 그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 붙드시며 죄를 정결케 하는 일을 하시고 높은 곳에 계신 위엄의 우편에 앉으셨느니라" (히브리서 1:3)"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high." (Hebrews 1:3)

아버지의 사랑 전부이십니다.“The express image of his person.” The Father has fully revealed Himself in the Son. To see the Son is to see the Father. The Son is not a part of the Father. He is not some portion of the Father's love. He is the whole of the Father's love.

And then the Holy Spirit. The Bible says:

"내가 아버지께로서 너희에게 보낼 보혜사 곧 아버지께로서 나오시는 진리의 성령이 오실 때에 그가 나를 증거하실 것이요" (요한복음 15:26)"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me." (John 15:26)

There are two things in this one verse: the Spirit “which proceedeth from the Father,” and “whom I will send.” That is why the church has confessed that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. But having proceeded, where does He go? Seen through the eyes of love, this word the Bible has given us reads like this: He proceeds from the Father and goes to the Son; He proceeds from the Son and goes to the Father. He conveys the Father's love to the Son and the Son's love to the Father. In this way He makes the two one. The third love I spoke of a moment ago, the love that makes one — that is He.

Here we must make two things clear. First, conveying is not an errand of carrying letters. The Holy Spirit is not one who carries love; the Spirit Himself is that love. Second, this is not a sequence but eternity. It is not that the Spirit conveys love and only then do the two become one. The three are one God, eternally, from the beginning. And it is not only the Spirit who is love. What the Spirit conveys is the Father's love and the Son's love. All three Persons are God who is love.

Then are there three Gods? No. The Bible says:

6:4)"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD." (Deuteronomy 6:4)

The Lord also said, “I and my Father are one.” The Father is the whole of love, the Son is the whole of love, the Spirit is the whole of love. The three do not divide love among themselves; they are three who are one love. Not three Gods, but one love, one God. So we must guard against two errors. God the Son is not a created being; He is the One who was loved before the world was made. And the three names are not three masks that one Person puts on by turns. Why? Because the Lord Himself said that the Father loved Him before the foundation of the world. If one Person merely appeared in three forms by turns, then before the world existed God would have been alone — and a God who is alone cannot be love, for no one can love alone. But the God the Bible has revealed is one God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, three Persons eternally loving one another. That is why the church has held to this for two thousand years: one God, three Persons. It sounds difficult, but its meaning is simple. God is the triune One who is not alone — that is, God is love.

Dear brothers and sisters, this is how God was love before the world existed: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — a perfect love that loves, is loved, and is one. A love lacking nothing. Then why did such a perfect love come all the way to us?

God did not make us because He had no one to love. He did not create us because He was lonely. The Bible says:

"또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 자이심이라" (사도행전 17:25)"Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things." (Acts 17:25)

God did not make us because He lacked anything. Since before the foundation of the world, love was already complete. But that perfect love overflowed, and so the world exists. So we exist. We are not God's need; we are the fruit and the evidence of His abundant overflowing. Just as following a stream upward brings you to its spring, following the love that has flowed to us brings us to God, its source.

How did that overflowing love come to us? Today's text tells us:

"하나님의 사랑이 우리에게 이렇게 나타난바 되었으니 하나님이 자기의 독생자를 세상에 보내심은 저로 말미암아 우리를 살리려 하심이니라" (요한일서 4:9)"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him." (1 John 4:9)

"사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 오직 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 위하여 화목제로 그 아들을 보내셨음이니라" (요한일서 4:10)"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (1 John 4:10)

As the word says, it was not that we first loved God. Just as the Father's love was directed toward the Son before the foundation of the world, now that love has sent the Son toward sinners. The Father's love that gives first appeared, really and truly, in history through Jesus. But look: He did not simply send Him. He sent Him to be the propitiation. The way for sinners to enter God's love is the death of the Son. God does not simply let the guilty pass. So this invitation is given freely, but it is not cheap. The Son whom the Father loved before the foundation of the world stood in the sinner's place. He died on the cross to wash away our sins. On that cross the Son returned the Father's love by obeying the Father's will, and the Father gave that Son up for us. The love that existed before the world was opened toward us at the cross. The grace that atones for sin was given in Christ, and in the Lord's death and resurrection God's justice and mercy accomplished our salvation. The Bible says:

"하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라" (요한복음 3:16)"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

That word was brought to its full completion on the Lord's cross.

And He poured out the Holy Spirit. The Bible says:

"소망이 부끄럽게 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은바 됨이니" (로마서 5:5)"And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." (Romans 5:5)

The very Spirit who conveyed the Father's love to the Son and the Son's love to the Father now pours that love of God into our hearts. What He did within God, He now does in us. He makes us one with Christ. He invites us into union with God. The Lord prayed this way:

"내가 아버지의 이름을 저희에게 알게 하였고 또 알게 하리니 이는 나를 사랑하신 사랑이 저희 안에 있고 나도 저희 안에 있게 하려 함이니이다" (요한복음 17:26)"And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them." (John 17:26)

그 사랑이 우리 안에 있다는 것이 곧 우리가 그 사랑 안에 있다는 것입니다.“That the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them.” The very love with which the Father loved the Son is in us. Not some other love. Not a slightly smaller love. That very love. So God dwells in us, and we dwell in God. “He that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” These are not two things but two sides of one union. That this love is in us means that we are in this love.

Dear brothers and sisters, this is the summit of today's message. God does not stop at loving us from outside. He brings us into the love that has existed between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit since before the foundation of the world. Look again at the Lord's prayer we read earlier: “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am.” Where is the Son? Within the Father's love. It is a prayer that we too may be there with Him. And what do we behold there? The glory the Father gave the Son because He loved Him before the foundation of the world.

Do we then become a fourth in God? No. We enter into union with God in the Son. We do not take the place of the Son's Person; united with the Son, we receive together the love the Son receives. The Holy Spirit unites us to Christ, so that in the Son we receive the Father's love, and the Spirit conveys our love to the Father — just as He conveyed the Son's love to the Father. Scripture describes this very path: when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons; and He sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. This is adoption — the free adoption by which He makes us His children. We have received the Spirit of adoption, and we call God Father. When we call Him Father, that cry is the cry the Spirit of the Son makes within us.

Dear brothers and sisters, true love cannot be alone. That perfect love, which cannot be alone, did not leave us outside but called us directly into God. We have come to dwell in the perfect love in which the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit love one another. And so we are never, ever alone again.

Dear brothers and sisters, look at the last verse of the text. The Bible says:

4:11)"Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." (1 John 4:11)

받은 사랑이 흘러가게 두는 것입니다.“If God so loved us.” The saying that love cannot be alone is true for us as well. God's love is an overflowing love. It overflowed from before the foundation of the world and came to us, and having come to us, it overflows still. Whoever has been invited into the love of the Trinity cannot keep that love clenched in his own hand. Love received ought to flow on. Those who have been invited welcome others. This week, welcome one person — one person near you who is alone. It may be a single phone call to someone you have not contacted in a long time, or inviting someone who eats alone to your table. One person. Not many people, just one. To that one person, God's love flows through us. We do not manufacture love. We let the love we have received flow on.

We are no longer alone. God, who has been love since before the foundation of the world, has invited us into the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We did not make that love. Nor did we earn it. That love overflowed and came to us, brought us in through the death of the Son, and was poured into us by the Spirit. This is our confession: we are no longer alone.

May God, who has been love since before the foundation of the world, keep you abiding in that love and let that love flow through you. I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ.
