Key Points
Do we still trust God when He does not answer at the time we want and in the way we want? At that moment, is the God we believe in the God the Bible speaks of, or a God we have made the way we want?
God is invisible, but He is not a God who hides. We cannot make God for ourselves, because God Himself has shown Himself in the Son and has borne our sins.
Forty days is not a long time to the God who created heaven and earth and divided the Red Sea. But a condition formed in their hearts: it must be clearly visible before us; we must be able to confirm it. The pillar of cloud and of fire were there, yet they wanted a god who could be seen in the shape they wanted.
Whoever forsakes God will always dig something with his own hands. The human heart is like a factory that never stops producing idols. It draws within a god who fits inside my understanding and moves when and where I want — and the hand sets it up outside.
Today's idols are not made only of gold and silver. To set aside the word in which God has revealed Himself, form in our hearts a god with the character and answers we want, and lean on him — that is an idol. A god who fulfills not God's will but mine is a false god produced by my own will.
Idols have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear. Those who trust in them become the same. People become like what they long for and look upon. What are we longing for and looking upon today?
At the very hour the people were making an idol at the foot of the mountain, on the mountain God was speaking of the sanctuary where He would dwell among them. The time when Moses could not be seen was not a time when God was absent. Before the people prepared a way to seek God, God first said He would be with them.
In Hebrew it reads, "My face shall go." The people wanted a god to go before them; God gave His own presence. Yet even Moses could not see God's face and live. Sinners cannot reconcile themselves to God; they need a true Mediator who is without sin.
Moses did not see God's face. But the Son came, and people actually saw, heard and touched Him. In the face of Jesus Christ, God Himself showed His glory. Therefore we can no longer make God as we please and serve Him that way.
Justice did not let sin simply pass, and the love of God laid that sin not on us, who could never bear it, but on God's Son. Because the Lord bore our sins in our place, the way has been opened for us to come boldly to God.
Judgment is not slack; God is longsuffering. God's seeming slowness is not God leaving me. This is the age in which the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is at work. Through the word the Holy Spirit lets us see the face of Christ.
One is to read it to confirm the god I have already drawn; the other is to read it to see how God has shown Himself. The first is the way of the foot of the mountain; the second is the way of the mountaintop, the way of the Lord.
Those who made idols came to resemble their idols. But those who behold Christ come to resemble Christ by the Spirit. It does not happen all at once, but by the Spirit of the Lord it surely happens. We do not change ourselves; the Spirit of the Lord changes us.
At the foot of the mountain the people made an idol for themselves; on the mountain God spoke of the sanctuary where He would dwell among them. The Son came as true man, dwelt among us, bore our sins in our place, and rose again. God is invisible, but He is not a God who hides. He has shown Himself in the way He Himself appointed.

"백성이 모세가 산에서 내려옴이 더딤을 보고 모여 아론에게 이르러 가로되 일어나라 우리를 인도할 신을 우리를 위하여 만들라 이 모세 곧 우리를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 사람은 어찌 되었는지 알지 못함이니라" (출애굽기 32:1)"And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him." (Exodus 32:1)
Dear brothers and sisters, we say that we believe in God. But do we still trust Him when He does not answer our prayers and our wishes at the time we want and in the way we want?
We are all people who wait. We wait for answers, we wait for healing, we wait for the day the Lord comes again. When what we prayed for is not resolved and the waiting grows long, our hearts begin to shake. We may honestly pour out such a heart to God; that is, of course, not wrong. But at such times we sometimes, without even realizing it, place conditions on God: "God, if You love me, You must do this for me — no, You absolutely must do it this way." Once such a condition takes its place in our hearts, from then on we are no longer waiting for God to answer our prayers; we are demanding that God give the answer we have already decided. Think about it. At that moment, who is the God we believe in? Is He the God the Bible speaks of, or a God we have made the way we want? Today's text shows clearly what happened in exactly that place.
The people of Israel in today's text were people who had crossed the Red Sea. With their own eyes they had seen the power of God, who led them out of slavery and set them free from Egypt. Yet when Moses was slow to come down from Mount Sinai, where he had gone to receive the commandments, they made this demand of Aaron: "Make us gods, which shall go before us."
Today let us follow this scene and examine our own hearts. What kind of God are we trying to make and believe in? And how has God shown Himself to us?
Let us read Exodus 32:1 together. "And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him."
There are three points in the text. First, Moses, who had gone up to meet God, was slow to come down from Mount Sinai. Second, the people, who had waited forty days, say they do not know what has become of Moses. Third, they demand that Aaron make gods to lead them. The delay in Moses' schedule became not knowing whether Moses was alive, and not knowing whether their leader was alive became the demand, "Make us gods, which shall go before us." When Moses could not be seen, rather than continuing to trust the God they had experienced, seen and felt — the God who had led them Himself — they tried to make a new god with their own hands.
How long was Moses delayed? Forty days. Is forty days a long time to the God who created heaven and earth and divided the Red Sea? No. But to them this time was far too long. Did they not know God? They did. And yet a condition toward God had formed in their hearts: it must be clearly visible before us, we must be able to confirm it, and only then will we believe He is with us. It was not that there was nothing to see. From the time they left Egypt, the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire had gone before them. Even at that very moment the cloud covered the mountain, and the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire in the eyes of the people. Still they wanted another god, an idol. Not because there was nothing to see, but because the true God, who has no form, gave them nothing to see in the shape they wanted. So they set aside the signs God had appointed and demanded that Aaron make them something that resembled whatever would satisfy them — something familiar and certain-looking in their own eyes.
Why did they do this? In the New Testament, Stephen explains the reason. They refused to obey Moses, and in their hearts they turned back again into Egypt. The time of waiting for Moses became the occasion that exposed this heart of theirs. So the root of the problem was rebellion — putting their own comfort and judgment ahead of God's leading, ahead of God Himself. Yes, before sin is a wound between people, it is rebellion against God. We trust our judgment more than God's word, we take what we have received from God for granted, and we seat ourselves on the throne of our lives. That is leaving the fountain of living waters. The Bible says, in Jeremiah 2:13, "For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."
Two evils: forsaking the fountain of living waters, and hewing out cisterns for themselves. Whoever forsakes God will always dig something with his own hands — he will make something. He comes to expect something that will satisfy his anxieties and desires. The human heart is like a factory that never stops producing idols. Such a heart dares to draw a god sized to fit itself: a god who fits inside my understanding, a god held in my hand, a god who moves when I want and in the direction I want. That is what we expect and make. And what the heart has drawn inside, the hand sets up outside. The heart conceives, and the hand gives birth. Stephen explains it this way: they made a calf, offered sacrifice to it, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. They put what they had made in the place of God and served it. A rebellion that began in the human heart showed itself in the worship of an idol made by hands.
But this is not a problem only among the Gentiles. The Bible shows this problem within the families of Abraham and Jacob as well. Abraham's father Terah served other gods, and Jacob's wife Rachel stole her father's idols, the teraphim. Would she steal something she would never use? And what is an idol used for, other than idolatry? What the Bible is telling us is that even within the household of faith there was this heart of idolatry. It is the same for us today. The idols we make today are not made only of gold and silver. To set aside the word of God, in which God has revealed Himself, and to form in our hearts some god with the character and the answers we want, and then to lean on that imagination — that is an idol. It is never a problem that we look for God's goodness, meditate on it and pray for His answers. We are creatures who must always earnestly seek God's answer. The problem is drawing God's goodness as we please, according to our own will, and then expecting God to work according to that picture. And we do not stop at comforting ourselves by imagining, under the pretext of God's goodness, a god who fulfills our will. We imagine a god of our own who accomplishes our will, and we actually ask such a god for help. If he is a god who fulfills not God's will but mine, is he not a false god produced by my own will? The human heart is capable of praying and pleading to just such a false god.
And such pleading has a result. The false god I have made cannot hold me up, but a change does take place in me. I who made the false idol come, in turn, to resemble it.
Psalm 115:8 says, "They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them."
The psalm says that idols have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear. Those who trust in them become the same. A person who worships idols cannot see the works of the living God, cannot hear Him, and becomes like a dead man who cannot respond to the living God at all. Leaving the living God to serve a lifeless idol, his spirit becomes like the dead idol. People become like what they long for and look upon. What are we longing for and looking upon today? Remember this, and examine your heart.
Dear brothers and sisters, do we believe that God is good only when we get the result we want? Do we consider God alive only when He fills our longings? Then at the very time the people of Israel, at the foot of the holy mountain, were making their own idol, believing it would fill their longings — where does the Bible record the living God was, and what was He doing?
Many days had passed since Moses went up the mountain. At the foot of this holy mountain the people were making an idol to lead them. At that very same time, on top of the mountain, what was God saying to Moses?
Exodus 25:8 says, "And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them."
What the people wanted was a god made by their own hands to go before them on their way. But at that very time God was telling Moses to build a sanctuary — the tabernacle — where God would dwell among the people of Israel. During the forty days Moses was with God, God spoke to him about the tabernacle, the priests and worship. When God finished speaking and gave him the tables of the testimony, the people were eating, drinking and making noise before the golden calf they had made, serving the idol, and Moses came down carrying the two tables of the covenant. Yes — even before the people of Israel made an idol to lead them, God had resolved to dwell among them and was speaking of it to Moses. But to human beings, the time when Moses could not be seen looked like a time when God was absent. In a wilderness where they did not know the way, when Moses, who led them, could not be seen, even their faith in God vanished from their hearts. But the truth the Bible testifies to us is that at that very time God was preparing a new way to be with them. Yes. In this relationship what comes first is God's reality and God's action. The change in our hearts follows after. Before the people prepared a way to seek God, God first said He would be with them.
But how can a rebellious people, sinful human beings, stand before the holy God? Even if they throw away their idols, sinners cannot simply stand before the holy God, because humanity is already defiled by sin. God says to Moses in Exodus 33:3, "Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way."
God says He will bring the people of Israel to the promised land. But He says He will not go up with them Himself. He says this lest this stiff-necked people rebel against Him again on the way and the tragedy come that He would consume them. But receiving the land God promised and God being with Israel as Israel's God are not matters of the same order. For it is the tremendous thing of Israel becoming God's people and the living God becoming Israel's God. So when the people of Israel heard this word of God, they mourned. Yet a rebellious people cannot escape judgment before the holy God. Moreover, their rebellion was not going to end with this one time, so it would have been entirely natural for God to refuse to go with them. But God is the God of love, the God who remembers and keeps His covenant with Abraham. And because God had also given His promise to Israel through Moses, He decided to go with Israel. God, who would be with them, knew how hard this would be. But God is the God who surely fulfills the promise He has once made. Therefore we cannot help but believe that when God made His covenant with Abraham, He had already purposed to save even such an Israel — to save humanity. But as sinners they needed a mediator. Moses stands between God and Israel and pleads. Yet Moses too is a sinner. Moses cannot wipe away their sin. The true Mediator must be one who is without sin and yet can stand before God on behalf of sinners. How can we sinners be reconciled to God? How can we, who were under death, receive life? How can we, who were enemies, be received into the place of children?
God answers Moses in Exodus 33:14: "And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."
In Hebrew it reads, "My face shall go." It is the promise that God Himself will go with them. What the people of Israel wanted was a god to go before them on their way; what God gave was His own presence. But when Moses asked God to show him His glory, God said, "Thou canst not see my face." Moses experienced God's glory, but Moses, a human being, could not see God's face and live. God had come near, but sinners could not by their own strength be reconciled to God.
But the fullness of time came. The Bible says, in John 1:14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
God had said that He would dwell among His people in the tabernacle. And when the fullness of time came, the eternal Son came as true man and dwelt among us. The word John uses for "dwelt" means to pitch a tent and dwell, and it calls to mind God dwelling among His people in the tabernacle. Now that word has been perfectly fulfilled in our Lord Jesus Christ coming among us clothed in the tent of flesh. The Bible also says, "we beheld his glory." People actually saw, heard and touched Jesus, God the Son, who came to this earth. John testifies that he declares what they saw with their eyes and handled with their hands. The Lord said, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father."
Second Corinthians 4:6 says, "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
Moses did not see God's face. But the Son came, and people actually saw Him. In the face of Jesus Christ, God Himself showed His glory. And He shined into our hearts the light of the knowledge of that glory. Why did He do this? Because God is love, and Jesus Christ is the Word who reveals that God. John says that the love of God was made manifest in His sending His only begotten Son into the world. The Word becoming flesh and being seen is the love of God revealing itself. God came in words people can understand and with a face people can see. Therefore we can no longer make God as we please and serve Him that way — because God has shown Himself to us in the Son.
And the God who has shown Himself to us has also borne our sins.
Hebrews 1:3 says, "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"
Yes. Our Lord is the express image of God's person, and the One who purged our sins. In this one verse God's revealing Himself to humanity and humanity's atonement stand together. What did He who is the express image of God's person do? He purged our sins. Our sins, which deserved judgment before the holy God, God the Son bore on the cross in our place — in my place — and died. As Isaiah prophesied, He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. And He rose again.
Second Corinthians 5:21 says, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
Yes. Because the Lord bore our sins in our place, the way for us to come to God has been opened. In the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle there was the mercy seat. On the way of God dwelling among His people there was, from the beginning, the blood of atonement. Christ Himself accomplished that way. In His death and resurrection the justice and the mercy of God accomplish our salvation. Justice did not let sin simply pass, and the love of God laid that sin not on us, who could never bear it, but on God's only Son. So at the cross God's justice and mercy met. God declares righteous those of us who believe in Christ. We are still people who must repent of sin, but the way has been opened for us to come boldly to the living God, trusting in Christ.
Dear brothers and sisters, the light of the knowledge of that glory has shined into our hearts. Then how do we live today with Christ, who has shown Himself and borne our sins?
The Lord has ascended, and we wait for Him to come again. Just as Israel waited at the foot of the mountain for the tables of God's covenant, we too are people who wait. Even in Peter's day there were those who mocked, saying, "Where is the promise of his coming?" And while we wait for the Lord, the stubborn temptation to fit God to our own will comes again. But this present time, in which God has delayed judgment, is not an empty time. For it is the age of the church, in which the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is at work.
Second Peter 3:9 says, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
Judgment is not slack; God is longsuffering. God's delaying the time is not indifference or inability but mercy with a purpose. God is patiently bearing with the present so that people may repent and return. God's seeming slowness is not God leaving me. The Lord said, "It is expedient for you that I go away," because the Comforter would come. The Holy Spirit lets us see the face of God through the word and causes us to receive that word deep in our hearts. But the people of Israel at the foot of the mountain said they would believe only what they could see with their own eyes, and they made an idol. The Lord, on the contrary, said, "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." We do not now see the Lord with our own eyes. Then how do we, who do not see, know the Lord? We have the Bible, the word of God. We have worship in which the word is proclaimed. And we have the stirring the Holy Spirit gives us through the word. Through that word the Holy Spirit lets us see the face of Christ. That is the way God shows Himself to His children in the age of the Comforter.
So when you open the Bible, when you listen to the word, do not look for a god who suits your heart; look to see who Christ is. There are two ways to read the Bible. One is to read it to confirm the god I have already drawn; the other is to read it to see how God has shown Himself. The first is the way of Israel at the foot of the mountain; the second is the way of the mountaintop, the way of the Lord. Hear the Lord's word, and actually ask the Lord for help. That is how to live the time of waiting for the Lord to come again.
Second Corinthians 3:18 says, "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
A little while ago I asked you to remember the word of the psalm. Those who made idols came to resemble their idols. But those who behold Christ come to resemble Christ by the Spirit. People become like what they always long for and look upon. What we believe and lean on shapes our lives. When we turn to Christ, the veil that covered our hearts is taken away. With unveiled faces, by the Spirit, we behold His glory. In the very place where we tried to fit God to our own shape, God changes us into the image of Christ. It says, "from glory to glory." It does not happen all at once. But by the Spirit of the Lord it surely happens. We are not the ones who change ourselves; the Spirit of the Lord changes us. Hear the word, lean on Christ, and ask Him for help. In that faith the Holy Spirit changes us.
This change will be completed when the Lord comes again.
First John 3:2 says, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
Now we are children of God. But what we shall be has not yet appeared. Yet one thing the word has told us, we know: when our Lord comes again, we shall be like Him. Then we shall see our beloved Lord as He is. The face of the God of glory that Moses could not see, the face of our Lord that we now look upon by faith — on that day we shall see it face to face, eye to eye. Our Lord will come again, and the dead will rise. As in Adam all die, so in Christ all are given the life of life. On the last day our Lord's return will raise the dead. Death, the last enemy, will be defeated forever. The change that has now begun by the Holy Spirit will then be made whole and complete. You who wait through today with shaken and anxious hearts — that day is coming. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
Dear brothers and sisters, today we have looked at the foot of the mountain and the top of the mountain. At the foot of the mountain the people of Israel made for themselves an idol to lead them. On the top of the mountain God spoke of the sanctuary where He would dwell among them. And the Son came as true man and dwelt among us, bore our sins in our place on the cross, and rose again. Now the Holy Spirit changes us, who believe in and behold Christ, into His image. God is invisible. But He is not a God who hides. He is the God who has shown Himself in the way He Himself appointed.
Joshua said to the people, in Joshua 24:14–15, "Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
It is the word to put away the gods served since the days of our fathers and to serve the LORD alone. The same word stands before us today. We confess: we choose God — not a god made by our own hands, but the God who has shown Himself in the Son.
Because God has shown Himself, we believe in Him. Because He has borne our sins, we come to Him. Because He makes us new, we live in hope until the day we see Him face to face.
Even on the way home after this worship, there is only One for us to look to. I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ, that each of you may trust the God who has shown Himself even where the waiting grows long, be conformed to Christ by the word and the Spirit, and live in hope until the day you see Him face to face.
