I Deserve to Die, Yet I Am Still Alive
34:6–7 · Exodus 34:6–7
Rev. Byong H. Yoo · 2026-09-27
And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

Dear brothers and sisters, let me ask you one question. Please answer it quietly in your heart. Are you a good person, or a bad person?

No one answers this question by saying, "I am a bad person." Everyone thinks of himself as a good person. Even prisoners locked up for their crimes are the same. "I am really a good person, but the world was bad, my lawyer was bad, and that is why I ended up like this" — that is how human beings feel wronged. But is that so? If the world were full of nothing but good people, why would wars break out, and why would the world be filled with violence?

What does the Bible say about people like us?

"예수께서 이르시되 네가 어찌하여 나를 선하다 일컫느냐 하나님 한 분 외에는 선한 이가 없느니라" (마가복음 10:18).When a man ran up to Jesus and called Him "Good Master," the Lord answered him like this. "And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." (Mark 10:18)

There is none good but one, that is, God. The Bible's answer is that there is no one good — not even one. At the very place where we believe that we ourselves are good and decent people, the Bible tells us exactly the opposite. Then is the Bible wrong? Or is it speaking the truth? Last time I told you that the Bible is the word of God, the book on which the Holy Spirit has stamped Himself like a seal. And only where we admit this truth does today's text open up to us.

The Bible says, "And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation." (Exodus 34:6–7)

God gave this word after Israel committed the great sin of making a golden calf and worshipping it. Up to verse 6 it is very good to hear: a God who is merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. Just thinking of it is good. But from the latter part of verse 7, our hearts are not at ease. Even to a person who thinks of himself as good, it is a heavy word to hear: the God who keeps mercy for thousands and says He forgives, yet declares, almost as a vow, that He will by no means clear the guilty. Fear comes over us. God vows to visit the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation. How can this be the word of a God of love? And why did God have no choice but to speak this way? Today we will seek the answer to that question.

First, there is something we must make clear. Surprisingly, life is not in us. Life is in God alone. The Bible says, "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them." (Deuteronomy 30:19–20) God tells us to choose life, and right after that He tells us what that life is that we must choose: "He is thy life." My life is not mine; He, God Himself, is my life. So the phrase "my life" is a lie — the thought that I hold my life apart from God and may do with it as I please is a lie. The truth is that even this life that keeps me alive comes from God and belongs to God.

But man believed the lie that his life was his own. What did the serpent say in Eden? He said that even if they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would surely not die — the bald-faced lie that, even without God, your life is your own. And he went on to deceive them like this. The Bible says, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5) Adam and Eve believed these words and wanted to separate themselves from God, who is life, and to become independent. When they stopped believing God's word, a dark ambition to become like God grew in them, and that black ambition turned into ingratitude that despised what they had received from God, and into rebellion that threw off the authority of the God who created us. Then, having left God, they set out to decide good and evil for themselves and piled up their sins. The bitter root of that original sin is lodged in us as our sinful nature, and our sins grow from the very same root. We trust our own judgment more than God's word, we take what we have received from God for granted, and we set ourselves on the throne of our lives in God's place. As a result we have fallen away from God and can no longer clearly tell what is good and what is evil. So we have come to the point of ruin where people think every person and every religion will probably be saved. We left God in order to know good and evil for ourselves, and now we cannot tell good from evil at all.

Here we must ask. Since we have fallen away from God, who is our life, are we alive or are we dead? We who threw life away ought, of course, to have died. Moreover, God had said that in the day we ate of that tree we would surely die. For man, who insulted and defied the authority of his Creator, death is not an excessive punishment; it is a just sentence.

And yet, dear brothers and sisters, how is it that we are alive now? Because the very God we rejected is still keeping us alive. By God's mercy this life has been extended, and we are living the time allowed us on this earth. Today too we breathe, we meet people, we love someone, and we have been given time to repent and turn from our wrongs. The longsuffering God of verse 6 in today's text has done this. So this time in which we are alive is an opportunity for repentance, not time made as an excuse to put repentance off. Moreover, this time is not forever. There is day, and night comes; in the same way, there is a time that ends.

But what happens if, during that time, we are not saved and do not dwell in life? We become foolish like those who made the golden calf, and we can only live sunk in sin. What on earth did the people of Israel, whom God had rescued out of Egypt, do at the foot of Mount Sinai? The Bible says, "And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD." (Exodus 32:4–5) They built an altar before the calf and proclaimed a feast to the LORD. They did not think that by worshipping an idol they had forsaken God. On the contrary, they thought they were worshipping the LORD. But in reality they did not lean on the God who had kept them alive; they tried to make even that God into whatever they wanted. They tried to hold on to God while bowing down to a golden calf they could see with their eyes. They simply could not understand that calling a golden calf "God" does not make that idol God.

We are the same. We cannot bring ourselves to admit that when the world does not go the way we want, it may not be the world that is wrong but we ourselves. The prisoner I mentioned earlier speaks our words: the world was bad, people were bad, my circumstances were bad. As long as we blame others and only complain, we cannot return to God, who is life. Just as Israel thought they were worshipping the LORD in front of the golden calf they had made, we too think we are right. We must truly realize that this is the foolishness of those who have fallen away from life.

In Exodus 32 man called the idol he had made "God," and in Exodus 34 God Himself tells us who He is. When Moses asked Him to show him His glory, God did not show His face; instead He gave His holy name. That name is today's text. Yes — God told us plainly, hiding nothing, how He actually deals with us. He told us His truth. We live in a twisted world that can never become heaven: our bodies grow old, death parts us from those we love, and one person's wrong choice affects another person's life. Yet even in this twisted world the ground still brings forth food for us to eat, and there is laughter and there is love in our lives. That is to say, in this world we have been given a time where judgment and mercy overlap. This world we live in is the place where God protects fallen man so that he can go on living, and where He grants to man, who should have died, a fleeting moment in which to come to know God and return. So when we read today's text from the place where we realize the truth that we deserve to die and yet are alive by mercy, the latter part of verse 7 sounds different.

We have now come to see why the world we live in is so full of suffering. Man left God, who is life, and because of that sin came to live in a world full of pain. We have learned from the Bible the truth that we, who ought to die at once, have by God's mercy received a fleeting moment of life on this earth as a chance to return to God. So the countless sufferings we go through while living in this broken world are only to be expected. But I want to ask this: in such a broken world, how is it that we still have joy? How does God keep mercy for thousands toward people who deserve to die?

What is amazing is that human beings under sin and death can still laugh. People who hurt one another are reconciled and sit face to face again; at the end of a day worn out with toil a warm meal is set before us; someone calls my name. Picture the table where you sit with your family: beloved faces, conversation going back and forth, laughter breaking out unexpectedly. Scenes we once took for granted are now astonishing. By what right could I receive all this? Does it not strike you as a miracle?

"여호와께서 그의 앞으로 지나시며 반포하시되 여호와로라 여호와로라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이로라" (출애굽기 34:6).Then who gives us this? In this broken world, what is the source of the strength to live with hope, and of the joy that is still in our lives? Just as following a stream upward brings you to the spring that is its source, following the blessings that have flowed down to us brings us to God. The name of God we meet at that spring is verse 6 of today's text. The Bible says, "And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth," (Exodus 34:6)

He is the merciful God. It is the heart of God, who holds us the way a mother holds the child born of her own womb. She does not hold the child because the child is impressive; she holds it because it came from her womb. That is how God deals with us.

He is the gracious God. It is the grace of God, who gives freely though we have no claim to it at all. That we opened our eyes this morning, that we are sitting here — none of it did we buy by paying a price. He is the longsuffering God. That we who deserve to die are alive today is the very proof of God's patience. God waits patiently until we come back. He is the God abundant in goodness and truth. God is the faithful God who keeps the covenant He has made, unchanging, to the very end. It was Israel who broke the covenant before the golden calf, but it was God who established the covenant again. Today's text comes from that very moment.

These five things do not describe who God is when He is alone. They describe how God deals with us. So this name is not knowledge only in the head; it is a name already engraved on the lives we have lived. Therefore we do not give thanks only because we have received much. Even on days when what we receive seems small, we can give thanks, because the God who gives it is good. Because the God who gives it is good, we come to love Him. Because God is good, good joy can dwell even in my life in this world, and life can overflow.

Now let us return to the question we set aside. Why does this God of love speak so fearfully: "that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation"? Is that not far too frightening a word for a God of love?

Sin is rebellion that rejects God, who is life, and that rebellion does not end with me. Human sins are bound up with one another. One person's lie leads another person's judgment astray; greed tears down someone's life; violence leaves wounds and fear. Those results in turn work on other choices and other relationships. If a father or grandfather is a murderer, the wound remains in the lives of the family, the victims and the community, and passes on to the next generation. And it is not only murderers. Our lives are joined to the lives of our descendants. The way we believe, the way we speak, the way we deal with sin leave their marks on them. The effects of sin cross over the generations. And this web is not only a net of wounds people pass to one another. It is a net of rebellion against God spreading from generation to generation. That is why it cannot be ended by apologies between people; God must deal with it. There is no way to slip out of it. But there is hope. To see that hope, we must first ask honestly.

Does God's visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation mean that children are punished in place of their fathers? Look at Numbers 14. Moses asked God to forgive Israel's complaining and grumbling against God, and God said, "I have pardoned according to thy word." But immediately after, God says this. The Bible says, "And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness." (Numbers 14:33) Even after God's forgiveness was proclaimed, Israel's children lived out the reality of the wilderness. This is what God's punishment actually carried out over three and four generations looks like. God did not lighten that punishment or take it away.

Then is this a case of children bearing their fathers' punishment in their place? No. The Bible says, "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." (Ezekiel 18:20) That is right: what the children bear is not their fathers' guilt. It is the reality their fathers' sin left behind. What has already happened has become real history, and the results that history leaves are carried in the real lives of the children. God does not let the guilty simply pass. He judges sin, and He deals justly with the reality that sin leaves behind.

Dear brothers and sisters, if God simply let sin pass, He would also simply pass over those who were sinned against. A God who said, in front of someone who has been wronged, "Let's just cover this up," would not be love. God cannot cover His own eyes. God's judgment comes upon the wicked, and His righteousness preserves the faithful. It is all God's doing. That is why not letting sin simply pass is also love. A God who keeps mercy and erases judgment, and a God who keeps judgment and erases mercy, can neither of them be just. That is why God, at the very place where He was establishing His covenant with Israel again, told this people His justice just as it is, adding nothing and taking nothing away.

And look at the order of verse 7: "forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin," and only after that, "that will by no means clear the guilty." Forgiveness comes first. We all stand under God's verdict, but above it forgiveness has been proclaimed first. Then who are the guilty who will be punished? They are the hardened sinners who despise God's long patience and refuse to the end to turn back. But God's goodness is meant to lead us to repentance.

Then what happens to the children who live in that wilderness? The Bible says, "But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised." (Numbers 14:31) They are the very same children. Yet God did not take away the wilderness they had to make their way through. He had them walk the whole hard road of the wilderness, but at its end He brought them into the promised land. The way God blesses us is not by removing every problem we face, but by giving us, in the midst of those problems, the strength and power to overcome by faith. A faithful son who sees his father's sin and does not follow that road, even if he lives amid the effects of his father's sin, is not defeated by those effects. He overcomes by God's help.

"여호와는 자비로우시며 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인자하심이 풍부하시도다 항상 경책지 아니하시며 노를 영원히 품지 아니하시리로다 우리의 죄를 따라 처치하지 아니하시며 우리의 죄악을 따라 갚지 아니하셨으니" (시편 103:8–10).Therefore we seek God's mercy for our descendants. Today's text proclaims together both the recompense of sin that reaches three and four generations and the mercy kept for thousands. The Bible says, "Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;" (Deuteronomy 7:9) Three and four generations — and thousands. However deep the history of sin runs, God's steadfast love is wider and longer still. We too have come this far carrying what earlier generations left us. And behind us are our children and grandchildren. So we pray: that what we leave them may not be only the effects of our sins but faith that trusts the faithful God; that my children and their descendants may trust God more than I do. This is why David sang this very name of God as his own song. "The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities." (Psalm 103:8–10)

God's faithfulness reaches beyond our death. This reality, this curse left by our ancestors' sin, God enables us to overcome and to win the victory over. That is God's blessing. And this is not only the history of our own families. Through the first man's sin, death came to reign over all mankind, and our ancestors' sin and our own sin are all within it. Because we live in a world where death holds power, we bear all the suffering we must bear here. But God's mercy, God's grace, lets us enjoy eternal life beginning here on this earth. The Bible says, "For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:17) God's salvation is not our running away from a world where death reigns. It is dwelling in God's life, and reigning in the Lord, even within this world where death once reigned. Yes — even if we grow old and die, we are victorious over death. For God, who was our life from the beginning, does not let go of us even before the death of the body. At that moment we will be welcomed into eternal life.

And this victory is not something we taste only after death. God's children live in this world victoriously, by God's love and blessing. Look at David. He was hunted by Saul, hunted by his own son, and lived through the suffering that came as the result of his own sin. Yet by God's help and mercy he overcame those hardships with his head held high. This is how he sang. The Bible says, "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1) "The strength of my life." Whoever has his life in God overcomes every hardship by the power of God's life. Look at God's children who grew up in the wilderness. Canaan was the land God had given them, but they had to fight to take it. Before they crossed the Jordan, God said this to Joshua. The Bible says, "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9) This is the blessing on God's children: not that He removes the hardships of this sinful, twisted world, but that He fills His children to overflowing with God's life — with strength, power, courage and joy to overcome any hardship at all. The power that uproots the hardships and death of this world does not come from us. It comes from God who is with us, from God alone, who is our life.

The Bible says, "And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance." (Exodus 34:8–9) Moses, having heard verse 7 to the end, did not run away; he fell down and asked for forgiveness. He chose God. The name of God is not a name that drives people away; it is a holy name that makes us bow before it and plead. This is the very reason God declared His name: so that we would worship Him with a whole heart, obey without falsehood, and lean entirely on His goodness alone.

Then how does God forgive us while never simply letting human sin pass? Our sins are so great, and I cannot bear my own sins, red like scarlet. Where did that word go, that He will by no means clear the guilty? That word was not withdrawn at all; rather it was fulfilled completely. The Bible says, "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." (Romans 3:25–26) It says that in God's forbearance He passed over the sins I committed before. That is exactly this time in which I, who deserve to die, am alive. God did not forget my sins during that time; He bore with them for the sake of our Lord's cross. The sin of mine that God would not let pass, He laid on His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to bear on the cross. He was wounded for my transgressions. And just as God is righteous, He also calls the one who believes righteous. I, a sinner, have been clothed in the garment of the Lord's blood and declared righteous. Judgment and mercy met in one place, at the cross. The name of God in Exodus 34 was fully revealed at the cross of our Lord. So God's forgiveness is in no way a light passing over of our sins. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you may believe that our reigning in God's life, too, is only by the one man, Jesus Christ. In Him are our life, our power and our glory.

May this be a week in which you walk with God — the God who keeps us alive today though we deserve to die, who does not simply let our sins pass, and who holds on to us by His mercy to the very end. I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ.
