Dear brothers and sisters, when we lived in Korea, every one of us stamped a seal on a document at some time. We did it when we opened a bank account, and we did it when we bought or sold a house. But the more important the paper was, what did the other side ask for? They did not ask us to bring the seal. They asked us to bring the certificate of the registered seal.

Why was that? Because anyone can go and have a seal carved. Someone else can carve a seal with my name on it and stamp it. So no matter how long you look at the seal itself, you cannot tell whether it is real or false.

Then how do we know? We know by comparing it with the mark already on file at the government office, the impression that was registered there. The one already stamped is the standard.

This is the question we will hold on to today. By what does God make His own will known to us? We pray. We ask for God's will. Should I do this, or should I not? Should I go this way, or that way?

And as we pray, something comes into our heart. Sometimes peace comes, sometimes assurance comes, and sometimes a thought rises up very clearly. But this thought, this assurance that has come into my heart, by what do we know whether it came from God or from myself?

But God has not left us standing before that question with empty hands. He has put something into our hands, so that we can compare and know.

They are only four short verses. But inside these four verses is the whole answer we need today.

Let us make this clear before anything else. If it is not the Holy Spirit, we have not one ray of the light of truth.

"육에 속한 사람은 하나님의 성령의 일을 받지 아니하나니 저희에게는 미련하게 보임이요 또 깨닫지도 못하나니 이런 일은 영적으로라야 분변함이니라" (고린도전서 2:14)"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14)

That is right. If the Spirit does not open our eyes, we will only see the things of God as foolishness. The cross of the Lord looks foolish, the Bible looks like nothing but an old book, and prayer begins to look like mumbling to ourselves.

Without the help of the Holy Spirit we cannot understand a single thing of God. We must admit all of this before we begin. To lean on the Holy Spirit is not wrong at all. It is not wrong; rather, without the help of the Spirit we can do nothing at all.

Then what about the apostles? What about Peter, and John, and Paul? Did they receive a different Spirit from ours? Is that why they carried out God's work with such power? No.

They received the very same Spirit that we have received. It is the Spirit who came down like fire at Pentecost. And what change did that Spirit work in the apostles?

Did He make them think lightly of the word of God? Did He make them say that now they had the Spirit they had no need of the Old Testament? It was the very opposite. The Spirit made them honor every word of God more deeply than before.

The writings the apostles left behind bear witness to this. Think about it. The New Testament is the writing of men who were filled with the Holy Spirit. And what does that New Testament do? It quotes the Old Testament, and quotes it again, and quotes it again.

All the word of God bears witness to Jesus Christ, and that is why the fullness of the Spirit in the apostles showed itself as a love for the word of God.

Why is this so? We can see it when we look at the work the Holy Spirit does. The Lord promised that the Spirit, who is the Spirit of Christ, would not speak of Himself. What does that mean?

It means the Spirit is not one who invents new revelations or new doctrines that would carry us away from the teaching the gospel has already given. He is the One who seals upon our hearts the teaching God has already given. Just as a seal is stamped, He presses the word of God down upon our hearts and engraves it there.

So then, dear brothers and sisters, look at the order of the commands in today's text. What is the first command? Quench not the Spirit. It means, do not put out the fire of the Holy Spirit.

Why do you think Paul said this first? Because we human beings are well practiced at putting out the fire of the Spirit. In our worship, in our prayer, in our homes, we must not hinder and put out the work the Holy Spirit is doing.

When the word pricks your heart, do not push it away. When you suddenly want to pray, wherever you are, do not put it off. When the desire comes to forgive your enemy, do not leave it until tomorrow. That may be the very thing that puts out the fire of the Spirit.

But where does that fire of the Spirit go out? Paul goes straight on to the next verse without stopping for breath. Despise not prophesyings. The light of the Spirit goes out at the very place where the word of God is treated lightly.

Paul set two things side by side. Honoring the work of the Holy Spirit, and honoring the word that is preached in the church. What is the prophesying that Paul spoke of? It is the preaching of the word of God among the gathered people.

And this was not something for that time only. Today also the word of God is preached from the pulpit. That is the center of it. This is why the fathers of the sixteenth century, in the days of the Reformation, understood this prophesying to be preaching.

And when believers lean on the word to encourage one another and to bless one another in the name of God, that too stands within the same stream. For there is something of the nature of prophesying in it. Why is that? Because God accomplishes His own will by His own word, the word He Himself has spoken.

Keep this in mind: the word of God does not return empty. So do not treat the preached word lightly. That is why Paul tells us not to despise it.

Even if the word of God reaches my ear by what seems like chance, if it is the word of the Bible we must pay attention to it. For we do not know what God may be saying to me right now through it.

But right after this Paul tells us to prove all things. He is not saying to swallow whatever any person tells us. Honoring the word and testing the word walk together.

Then by what do we test it? By the word He has already given us. For us today that standard is the Bible. We test all things by the word, and we test the word by the word. No one can ask for the leading of the Spirit and then neglect the Bible that the same Spirit has sealed for us.

This is not something Paul said first. It is what God had already promised through Isaiah.

"여호와께서 또 가라사대 내가 그들과 세운 나의 언약이 이러하니 곧 네 위에 있는 나의 신과 네 입에 둔 나의 말이 이제부터 영영토록 네 입에서와 네 후손의 입에서와 네 후손의 후손의 입에서 떠나지 아니하리라 하시니라 여호와의 말씀이니라" (이사야 59:21)"As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever." (Isaiah 59:21)

Look at it. My spirit and my words, the Spirit of God and the word of God, these two stand together within one covenant. He is making it plain that the covenant is a covenant concerning the Spirit and the word.

My spirit that is upon thee: He is speaking of the Holy Spirit. And my words which I have put in thy mouth: that is the word of God itself. And how long does He say these two will stay together? From henceforth and for ever. That means forever.

He says they shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed. God has bound this blessing to His people by His own holy promise. It is not man who tied them together. To be ruled by these two is the great blessing of the people of the new covenant, a blessing the world can never give.

Just as we look at the moon that a finger points to, we come to know the will God has revealed through the written word. So the finger that points to the moon and the moon itself are a pair. Without a finger to point, we cannot find the moon; and without the moon, the finger is only pointing at empty air.

And yet what God has joined together, man divides. Divide them, and both will die. And still, man insists on doing it.

The Bible is the place where the Holy Spirit, as one stamps a seal, has stamped Himself and shown us the will of God. So when we come to the Bible there is no way around the moving of the Spirit, and without the moving of the Spirit there is no way to understand the Bible.

But if we read the Bible without leaning on the Spirit, as we would read any other book, these letters become dead letters; and what we call the voice of the Spirit, when we do not lean on the word of the Bible, is really a dead thought that came out of my own heart. And we who hold that in our hands can die forever.

There are two roads here, and both of them are dangerous.

The first is the road of seeking the Spirit without the word. If we push the word aside and ask for the leading of the Spirit, what happens? While we pray, peace comes into our heart. A thought rises up. And then we come to call that thought the voice of the Spirit.

But did it really come from the Holy Spirit, or is it simply what I wanted to do all along? Or is it the mind of an evil spirit that wants to toy with me? Unless we hold it up to the light of the word and test it, there is no way to know.

If we ignore the word and follow the mood of my own heart, my will sits down in the holy place where the will of God ought to sit. At times even the thought of an evil spirit can come in. And then the astonishing thing happens: we call that the will of God.

Proverbs says there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. It is a way that seems right to a man. To my own eyes it is certain. But the end of it is death. This is not somebody else's story. If we are not awake, any one of us can walk this way.

The second is the road of reading only the letters, without the Spirit.

"저가 또 우리로 새 언약의 일군 되기에 만족케 하셨으니 의문으로 하지 아니하고 오직 영으로 함이니 의문은 죽이는 것이요 영은 살리는 것임이니라" (고린도후서 3:6)"Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life." (2 Corinthians 3:6)

The letter, that is, the Bible taken as nothing but written words, is what kills. The letter kills. When is that so? It is when that word is cut off from the grace of Christ. It is when it only sounds in the ear and never reaches the heart.

But brothers and sisters, what does it mean that it never reaches the heart? It does not mean that you feel nothing. It does not mean that no tears come. It means that we read the Bible and still do not lean on the Christ to whom that word bears witness.

It means reading the Bible in order to check how well I am believing. It means using the word only to confirm my own righteousness. Or else it is those who read to check how well other people are believing, or who use the word to justify their own will; those are the people we are speaking of.

And here we must look at ourselves. We too hold the Bible in our hands. We read it at dawn, we read it on the Lord's Day, and we read it straight through. But if we do not go to the Jesus Christ to whom that word points, if we only read the Bible and close it, then we are those people too.

We come to know the word, and then we close the book. But we do not go out to our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the very substance of that word. This is not another person's story. It is the story of us who read the Bible.

There have surely been people who held the Bible in their hands and yet died without receiving eternal life. In the days of Jesus, who were the people who read the Scriptures the most? And when they stood before our Lord, to whom those Scriptures pointed, what did they do? Did they not persecute Him and nail Him to the cross?

So then, to come to the word without leaning on the Holy Spirit is a fearful thing.

Are these two different roads? No. On both of them my own will survives. On the one, by pushing the word aside; on the other, by not going to the Christ to whom the word points.

Either way my own will is left untouched, just as it was. And either way, what we need is the grace of Christ.

Then what is the new covenant? Is it, as the words might suggest, that He abolished the written law and gave us a new law instead? No. Through Jeremiah God said that He would put His law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts.

He did not do away with the letters. He engraved the law of God not on tablets of stone but on the tablet of the heart. And what kind of word is this word?

"하나님의 말씀은 살았고 운동력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 감찰하나니" (히브리서 4:12)"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

"지으신 것이 하나라도 그 앞에 나타나지 않음이 없고 오직 만물이 우리를 상관하시는 자의 눈앞에 벌거벗은 것 같이 드러나느니라" (히브리서 4:13)"Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do." (Hebrews 4:13)

What does it mean that the word is living and powerful? It means that it discerns the thoughts and intents of our heart. If the two roads we looked at both left my heart and my will alive, the work of the living word is the very opposite.

The living word of God pierces my will, divides it open, uncovers it, and judges it. Before God there is not one thing we can hide. Everything is laid open before God, as if we were standing naked.

And so what happens? We are moved from the place where we read the word to the place where the word reads us. I thought I was reading the Bible, but the Bible has been reading me.

But in that place where we are laid bare before the word, is there only judgment?

"그러므로 우리에게 큰 대제사장이 있으니 승천하신 자 곧 하나님 아들 예수시라 우리가 믿는 도리를 굳게 잡을찌어다" (히브리서 4:14)"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession." (Hebrews 4:14)

"우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리 연약함을 체휼하지 아니하는 자가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 한결 같이 시험을 받은 자로되 죄는 없으시니라" (히브리서 4:15)"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15)

"그러므로 우리가 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라" (히브리서 4:16)"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)

Dear brothers and sisters, in that very place where we are laid bare and can hide nothing, we have a great high priest. Since our sin and our whole life have been uncovered, must we run away from our Lord? No. The word tells us to come boldly before the Lord.

How can we do that? Because He is our high priest. Because He died on the cross in our place and now stands before God for us. Because He knows our weakness, and was tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.

He is our Lord and our God, who intercedes for us and loves us; and so, in that place where we have been uncovered, we do not run away but can come boldly to the throne of grace. After Adam sinned, he knew that he was naked, and he hid. We too, when all our sin is uncovered, want to hide.

But Hebrews says the very opposite. It says: now that you are uncovered, come to the Lord. Why? Because there is no need to hide. Because before the Lord there is no place for us to hide.

Because the Lord who carried the cross in our place is already standing in that very spot where the Bible has read my life. And when the Spirit engraves the word on our heart and that word shows us Jesus Christ, right then it becomes the word of life.

19:7)"The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple." (Psalm 19:7)

What does the Bible say about that law of God which people call a dead letter? It says that it converts the soul. It means that it makes the soul alive. When the Spirit engraves the word of God on the tablet of our heart and shows us the living Jesus Christ, that word is what makes the soul alive.

The will of God is not something written on paper and left there hardened. It is alive and moving within our inmost heart. And the living God rules over us by that word today as well.

So the child of God knows two things. That without the Spirit we have not one ray of the light of truth, and that the way that light comes to us is the word. Then, with the word of God engraved on the tablet of our heart, how are we to live? Look again at today's text. Paul says, prove all things, hold fast that which is good.

Look at where Paul's command ends. It does not end with testing. He says to hold fast that which is good. Testing does not mean doubting. It does not mean believing nothing. It does not mean standing with folded arms and finding fault.

It is so that we may recognize what is good and hold on to it to the end. When we choose something at the market, why do we look it over? We do not look it over in order to avoid buying it. We look it over in order to buy the best one.

Verse twenty-two is the other side of the same coin. Hold fast that which is good, and abstain from all appearance of evil. Hold on to what is good, and throw away whatever is evil. And for us to be able to do that, we must first be able to recognize what is good.

Then in whose light do we recognize it? God has not left us with empty hands. The same Spirit who gave us the Bible has stamped His own image upon it. He has left the registered seal of God there.

So whatever we take to be the leading of the Spirit, we can hold it up to the light of that word which the Spirit Himself has left behind. When I compare this thought that has come into my heart with the impression the Spirit has already stamped there, then whatever does not match that impression, I know it is not from the Spirit.

Is this dishonoring the Holy Spirit? Is it putting the Spirit under the Bible? No. It is the Spirit Himself who wanted it to be this way. And that image never changes.

When the Spirit shines upon the word, there we behold the face of God; and the other way round, by that word we recognize the Spirit. The Lord has bound these two together as one.

And here we must be clear about what the will of God is. The will of God is not an answer sheet for every choice that lies ahead of me. This job or that job, this house or that house; we do not open the Bible somewhere to find those answers. Those are things God has already prepared.

Of course, at the hard turns of life we must bring our requests to God in prayer. When I do not know which way to go, it is only right to ask for God's help. But the will of God that we must truly seek is the Father's will, plainly made known to us in the Bible.

It is that holy will which says: believe, repent, love, obey. When we stand under that holy will of God, the rest of the road we must walk is surely held safe in the hand of God.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us then ask ourselves honestly. Do we want to know the will of God, or do we want my own will confirmed? When we bend our knees in prayer, whose kingdom and whose will are we really asking for?

Examine it. Do not take a thought that rises in your heart to be the will of God straight away; hold it up to the word and examine it. Suppose that while you were praying, this assurance came to you: in this matter I am right, so I do not need to be the first to apologize. And your heart is at peace as well.

Hold that assurance up to the word. Before the word that says, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift, can that assurance still stand? This is what it means to compare it with the seal of God left in the Bible.

Begin with my own thoughts. Then examine also the words I hear and take in. This is not to sort out who is right and who is wrong. It is so that we do not miss what is truly good in them. And what the word brings to light at that moment is that place we spoke of earlier. It is the place where my own will had been sitting.

And then lay yourself down before the word and follow it. Put your life in the place where the word is read and where the word of God is heard. At dawn, at the table, on the Lord's Day, entrust your life wholly to that place. And in that place, ask for the help of the Holy Spirit.

Hold fast the word of God written in the Bible, and read it leaning on the Jesus Christ to whom that word bears witness. While you read, when a word comes that collides with my own thinking, do not avoid it. Do not run away. That is exactly the place where I am uncovered.

Lay down that one stubbornness of mine which the word has uncovered. At home, at work, in the church, lay down that one stubborn thing I had been holding on to as right, the thing the word puts its finger on.

And according to the will of God you have come to know, start one changed action right now. Just one. That first step will change my life completely.

Look at Paul. He was a man of the Spirit who was caught up to the third heaven. Which of us has seen anything like that? And yet even that astonishing experience could not take Paul away from the Scriptures.

Paul never stopped drawing profit from the law and the writings of the prophets. A man who had seen the risen Lord and heaven itself with his own eyes still would not let go of the word. If Paul looked to the word like that, what ought we to do?

In Philippi, Paul went looking for a place of prayer, sat down by the river, and spoke the word to the women who had gathered there. Among them was a woman named Lydia.

"두아디라성의 자주 장사로서 하나님을 공경하는 루디아라 하는 한 여자가 들었는데 주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 청종하게 하신지라" (사도행전 16:14)"And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul." (Acts 16:14)

Look at this one verse. Paul spoke the word. Lydia heard it. But between those two there is one more thing. The Lord opened her heart.

The word came out of Paul's mouth, and the heart was opened by the Lord. These two met, and Lydia gave heed. She was a woman who worshipped God. She was a woman who came out to the place of prayer on the Sabbath. And even so, the Lord had to open her heart.

It is the same for us today. The word is preached, the Lord opens the heart, and that is how we are able to hear.

Dear brothers and sisters, the same Spirit who lived in the apostles and spoke through them is calling us every day by that word. Not today only. Every single day. This week, open your Bible again.

It is not a book you read once and close. Stand every day before the will of the living God. And before you open it, pray first. Holy Spirit, open this word to me, so that I may know the Lord's will and follow it.

May God, who has woven the word and the Spirit together and bound them as one, open your hearts by that word and set you day by day under His will, and this I pray as a blessing upon you in the name of Jesus Christ.
