생명의 떡 앞에서 누가 남는가

예수께서 이르시되 나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라 (요한복음 6:35)Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." (John 6:35)

예수님은 단순히 우리의 배를 채워주는 유용한 왕이 되기를 거부하시고, 우리 삶 전체가 그분을 먹고 마시기를 요구하십니다. 복음은 우리가 그분의 '유익'을 구하는 단계에서 그분의 '인격'을 신뢰하는 단계로 나아가게 합니다.Jesus refuses to be merely a useful king who fills our stomachs; He asks that our whole life feed on Him. The gospel moves us from seeking His 'benefits' to trusting His 'person.'

거짓된 배고픔: 유익을 좇는 신앙 (요 6:1–15, 26–29)

오늘 우리는 요한복음 6장의 현장으로 들어갑니다.Today we step into the scene of John chapter 6.

때는 유월절이 가까운 시점이었습니다.It was near the time of the Passover.

이스라엘 백성들에게 유월절은 단순한 명절이 아니었습니다.For the people of Israel, Passover was no ordinary festival.

그것은 과거 출애굽의 해방을 기억하는 날임과 동시에, 현재 로마의 압제 아래 신음하고 있는 자신들의 처참한 현실을 뼈저리게 자각하는 날이었습니다.It was a day to remember their past deliverance in the Exodus, and at the same time a day to feel keenly the wretched reality of their present groaning under Roman oppression.

과거, 노예로 살던 애굽에서 하나님의 구원하심으로 자유인이 되어 떠나던 그 영광스러운 유월절은, 로마의 지배하에 있는 오늘의 비참한 현실과 뼈아픈 대조를 이루고 있었기 때문입니다.For the glorious Passover, when by God's salvation they had left slavery in Egypt as free people, stood in painful contrast to their miserable reality now under Roman rule.

그들은 가난했고, 배고팠습니다.They were poor, and they were hungry.

그래서 무엇보다 그들은 강력한 해결책, 즉 이스라엘을 이끌고 애굽을 떠나 약속의 땅으로 인도했던 '모세'와 같은 강력한 지도자를 갈망하고 있었습니다.So more than anything they longed for a powerful solution—a strong leader like 'Moses,' who had led Israel out of Egypt to the promised land.

충분히 공감이 가는 사정입니다.It is a longing we can well understand.

세상 그 누가 자유를 빼앗기고, 가진 것을 강탈당하며, 압제하에서 살고 싶겠습니까?Who in this world would want to be robbed of freedom, stripped of their possessions, and made to live under oppression?

인간은 그 무엇보다 자유를 원하기 마련입니다.Human beings desire freedom above almost everything else.

바로 그때, 병자들을 고치시는 놀라운 기적을 행하신 예수님의 소문이 들려왔습니다.Just then, word spread of Jesus, who was performing astonishing miracles, healing the sick.

젊은 랍비의 놀라운 능력과 권세 있는 가르침에 대한 소문이 온 갈릴리에 파다하게 퍼졌습니다.Rumors of this young rabbi's remarkable power and authoritative teaching spread throughout all Galilee.

그런데 그 예수님께서 자신들의 지역에 오신다는 소식이 들려온 것입니다.And now came the news that this Jesus was coming to their own region.

수많은 군중은 부푼 기대감을 안고 이 젊은 랍비를 만나기 위해 주님이 계신 산으로 몰려들었습니다.Filled with rising expectation, huge crowds streamed to the mountain where the Lord was, eager to meet this young rabbi.

그리고 그곳에서 엄청난 사건이 벌어집니다.And there an extraordinary event takes place.

로마에게 모든 것을 빼앗기며 가난하게 살던 이 백성들은, 자신들을 이끌어줄 지도자를 간절히 바라는 마음 하나로 무작정 길을 나섰습니다.These people, who had lost everything to Rome and lived in poverty, set out on the road with nothing but a desperate longing for a leader to guide them.

수 시간을 걸어온 이 가난했던 이들에게는 먹을 것이 없었습니다.Having walked for hours, these poor people had nothing to eat.

하지만 주님께서 한 어린아이의 작은 도시락, 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 손에 드시고 축사 하셨을 때, 남자만 5천 명이 넘는 거대한 군중이 배불리 먹고도 남는 기적이 일어납니다.But when the Lord took a little boy's small lunch—five barley loaves and two fish—and gave thanks, a miracle occurred: a vast crowd of more than five thousand men ate their fill, with food to spare.

모두가 배불리 먹고도 남은 조각이 열두 바구니에 찼으니, 얼마나 엄청난 기적이 임했는지 알 수 있습니다.All ate their fill, and the leftover pieces filled twelve baskets—showing how staggering a miracle had taken place.

이것은 단순한 한 끼 식사의 해결이 아니었습니다.This was not merely the solving of a single meal.

광야 같은 세상에 지친 백성들에게 임하신 하나님의 엄청난 은혜였습니다.It was the immense grace of God coming upon a people weary in a wilderness-like world.

그러나 여기서 비극적인 오해가 시작됩니다.But here a tragic misunderstanding begins.

배부름을 경험한 군중의 눈빛이 변했습니다.Having experienced fullness, the crowd's eyes changed.

이 엄청난 기적을 경험한 사람들이 흥분하기 시작한 것입니다.The people who had witnessed this great miracle began to grow excited.

절망적인 이 세상에 갑자기 어떤 희망이 보이기 시작했기 때문입니다.For in this hopeless world, a certain hope suddenly seemed to appear.

이 분이시라면 뭔가 자신들이 원하는 일을 이루어주실 것 같은 생각이 들었던 것입니다.They thought, 'This man could surely bring about the things we want.'

성경은 15절에서 그래서 그들이 예수님을 "억지로 붙들어 임금으로 삼으려" 했다고 기록합니다.And so, in verse 15, Scripture records that they intended to 'come and take him by force, to make him a king.'

떡과 물고기로 배를 채운 그 순간, 그들의 머릿속에는 광야에서 만나와 메추라기를 먹였던 위대한 지도자 모세의 형상이 주님의 모습과 겹쳐 보인 것입니다.The moment their stomachs were filled with bread and fish, the image of Moses—the great leader who had fed them manna and quail in the wilderness—overlapped in their minds with the figure of the Lord.

"이 사람이다! 이 사람이라면 우리의 배고픔을 해결하고, 로마의 압제에서 우리를 구원할 강력한 메시아, 제2의 모세가 될 수 있다!"라는 확신이 생긴 것입니다.They became convinced: 'This is the one! This man can solve our hunger and become the powerful Messiah, a second Moses, who will save us from Roman oppression!'

그래서 그들은 예수님을 억지로라도 왕으로 세우려 했습니다.So they tried to make Jesus king, even by force.

하지만 안타깝게도 우리 주님은 인간의 배를 채우고 그들 위에서 군림하는 세상의 왕이 되러 오신 분이 아니셨습니다.But sadly, our Lord had not come to fill human stomachs and reign over them as an earthly king.

예수님은 그들의 헛된 기대를 아시고 그들을 피해 홀로 산으로 떠나십니다.Knowing their empty expectations, Jesus withdrew from them and went up the mountain alone.

그러나 군중은 포기하지 않았습니다.But the crowd did not give up.

이튿날 그들은 기어코 바다 건너 가버나움까지 예수님을 찾아옵니다.The next day they pressed on, crossing the sea all the way to Capernaum to find Jesus.

거센 풍랑을 뚫고 끝까지 주님을 쫓아온 그 열심은 대단했습니다.Their zeal in pursuing the Lord to the very end, through fierce waves, was remarkable.

하지만 주님은 자신을 찾아온 그들의 마음 중심을 날카롭게 진단하십니다.But the Lord sharply diagnoses the true heart of those who had come seeking Him.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.Scripture says:

"예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표적을 본 까닭이 아니요 떡을 먹고 배부른 까닭이로다" (요 6:26)"Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled." (John 6:26)

주님은 이 세상이 정치적이고 물리적인 힘만으로는 진정으로 바뀔 수 없음을 너무나 잘 아셨습니다.The Lord knew all too well that this world cannot be truly changed by political and physical power alone.

주님께서 우리에게 주시고 싶으신 것은 권력과 재물을 통한 일시적 해방이 아니라, 주님 안에만 있는 참된 진리, 영생의 축복, 즉 진정한 구원이었기 때문입니다.For what the Lord wants to give us is not a temporary liberation through power and wealth, but the true truth found in Him alone, the blessing of eternal life—that is, true salvation.

그러나 이 불쌍한 영혼들의 상태는 마치 갈증을 해소하기 위해 바닷물을 마시는 표류자와 같았습니다.But the condition of these pitiable souls was like that of a castaway drinking seawater to quench his thirst.

마시면 마실수록 더 목이 타고 괴로운 바닷물처럼, 가지면 가질수록 더 목이 마르고 허무해지는 세상의 떡, 세상의 성공, 세상의 안녕과 평화를 추구했기 때문입니다.Like seawater that parches and torments the more one drinks, they pursued the world's bread, the world's success, the world's comfort and peace—things that leave one thirstier and emptier the more one has.

그러나 이들은 정작 진정한 구원인 영원한 생명을 주시는 주님과 하나님의 뜻은 전혀 보지 못하고 있었던 것입니다.Yet they were utterly blind to the Lord who gives eternal life—the true salvation—and to the will of God.

당장의 배고픔과 현실의 고통에 마음을 빼앗겼기 때문입니다.For their hearts were captured by immediate hunger and present pain.

우리의 처지가 어려우면 어려울수록, 괴로우면 괴로울수록 세상이 아니라 하나님에게서 구원을 구해야 하는데, 이들은 자신들의 육적인 틀을 벗어나지 못하고 있습니다.The harder and more painful our circumstances, the more we ought to seek salvation from God rather than from the world; yet these people could not escape their fleshly frame of mind.

이제 주님은 그들의 시선을, 그리고 오늘 우리의 시선을 교정하십니다.Now the Lord corrects their gaze—and ours today as well.

주님이 말씀 하십니다.The Lord says:

"썩을 양식을 위하여 일하지 말고 영생하도록 있는 양식을 위하여 하라 이 양식은 인자가 너희에게 주리니 인자는 아버지 하나님께서 인치신 자니라" (요 6:27)"Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed." (John 6:27)

주님은 '하나님의 일'을 재정의하십니다.The Lord redefines 'the work of God.'

그것은 기적을 얻어내거나 우리의 공로를 쌓는 것이 아니라, "하나님께서 보내신 이를 믿는 것"이라고 선포하십니다.He declares that it is not obtaining miracles or piling up our own merits, but 'believing in the one whom God has sent.'

그리고 하나님이 보내신 인자는 영생하도록 있는 양식을 우리에게 주신다는 것입니다.And the Son of Man whom God has sent gives us the food that endures to eternal life.

사랑하는 여러분, 오늘 우리는 어떤 마음으로 주님 앞에 나왔습니까?Beloved, with what heart have we come before the Lord today?

빵을 찾아 헤매는 굶주린 사람처럼 절박하게 '생명의 떡이신 주님 그분 자체'를 구하고 있습니까?Are we desperately seeking 'the Lord Himself, who is the bread of life,' like a starving person searching for bread?

아니면 여전히 내 육신의 채워지지 않음을 채워줄 '또 다른 떡'만을 바라고 있지는 않습니까?Or are we still looking only for 'another loaf' to fill the emptiness of our flesh?

오늘 말씀을 통해 우리의 거짓된 배고픔이 진정한 믿음으로 변화되는 은혜가 있기를 간절히 소망합니다.Through today's word, I earnestly hope there will be grace that turns our false hunger into true faith.

엄중한 현실: 예수님의 인격과 마주함 (요 6:16–21, 48–58)

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여러분은 예수님을 누구로 알고 계십니까?Beloved saints, who do you understand Jesus to be?

단순히 나의 필요를 채워주고, 내 문제를 해결해 주는 능력자입니까?Simply a powerful figure who meets my needs and solves my problems?

아니면 내 생명과 인생의 전적인 주인이신 하나님으로 고백하고 계십니까?Or do you confess Him as God, the total Lord of your life and existence?

오늘 본문은 우리를 엄중한 현실, 바로 예수님의 진짜 인격 앞으로 데려갑니다.Today's text brings us before a sobering reality—the true person of Jesus Himself.

먼저 주님은 폭풍 속에서 당신의 정체를 드러내십니다.First, the Lord reveals His identity in the midst of a storm.

오병이어의 기적 후, 제자들이 배를 타고 갈릴리 바다를 건너갈 때 거친 폭풍이 몰아칩니다.After the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, as the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee by boat, a violent storm breaks out.

두려움에 떨고 있는 그들에게 주님은 물 위를 걸어오시며 말씀하셨습니다.To them, trembling in fear, the Lord came walking on the water and said,

"내니 두려워하지 말라" (20절)."It is I; be not afraid." (verse 20)

여기서 "내니"라는 말은 헬라어로 '에고 에이미(Ego Eimi)', 즉 "나는 스스로 있는 자다"라는 뜻입니다.Here the words 'It is I' are, in Greek, 'Ego Eimi'—that is, 'I AM, the self-existent one.'

이것은 구약 출애굽기에서 하나님께서 모세에게 당신의 이름을 계시하실 때 사용하신, 감히 인간이 입에 담을 수 없는 하나님의 고유한 이름입니다.This is the unique name of God, which no human dares to utter, the name God used when He revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus.

지금 예수님은 단순히 물 위를 걷는 기적을 보여주시는 것이 아닙니다.Jesus is not merely displaying the miracle of walking on water.

당신이 모세를 보낸 그 하나님이시며, 자연과 역사를 주관하시는 창조주이심을 폭풍 속에서 선포하신 것입니다.He is declaring, in the midst of the storm, that He is the very God who sent Moses, the Creator who rules over nature and history.

제자들은 이 압도적인 신성 앞에서 두려워할 수밖에 없었습니다.Before this overwhelming divinity, the disciples could not but be afraid.

그러나 다음 날, 기어코 바다를 건너 예수님을 찾아온 군중들의 반응은 어떠했습니까?But the next day, what was the response of the crowd who pressed across the sea to find Jesus?

그들은 여전히 옛 방식, '모세 타령'을 하고 있습니다.They were still stuck in the old way, harping on about Moses.

그것도 그들이 모세를 알고 믿어서가 아니라 모세가 자기들을 이끌고 먹였다는 이유로 말입니다.And not because they knew and believed Moses, but because Moses had led and fed them.

성경은 말씀하십니다.Scripture says:

"기록된 바 하늘에서 그들에게 떡을 주어 먹게 하였다 함과 같이 우리 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었나이다" (31절)"As it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat: our fathers did eat manna in the desert." (verse 31)

그들의 속내는 이것입니다.Their underlying thought was this:

"모세는 40년 동안 하늘에서 만나를 내려주었는데, 당신은 우리에게 무엇을 줄 수 있소? 어제 그 보리떡 말고, 더 확실하고 지속적인 것을 내놓으시오."'Moses gave us manna from heaven for forty years—what can you give us? Beyond yesterday's barley loaves, show us something more certain and lasting.'

그들은 여전히 눈에 보이는 떡, 먹고 배설하여 사라질 썩을 양식에만 집착하고 있습니다.They were still fixated only on visible bread—perishable food that is eaten, excreted, and gone.

그들의 눈에는 율법을 대표하는 모세만 보일 뿐, 그 율법의 실체이시며 성자 하나님이신 예수님이 눈앞에 계시다는 사실이 도무지 이해되지 않는 것입니다.Their eyes saw only Moses, the representative of the Law, and they simply could not grasp that Jesus—the substance of that Law and God the Son—was standing right before them.

그들은 그 모세로 대표되는 율법의 체계가 죄를 드러내나 생명을 완성하지 못하며, 그리스도께 인도하는 역할을 위해 세워졌으나 자신들을 구원할 수 없어 성자 하나님이신 예수님이 이 땅위에 내려오신 이 상황이 도저히 이해가 안가는 것입니다.They could not understand the situation at all: that the system of the Law represented by Moses exposes sin but cannot perfect life, that it was established to lead people to Christ but cannot save them, and that this is why Jesus, God the Son, had come down to this earth.

하지만 예수님은 그들의 무지에도 포기하지 않으십니다.Yet Jesus does not give up even on their ignorance.

주님은 그들의 시선을 땅에서 하늘로, 죽음에서 생명으로, 과거의 모세에서 현재의 당신에게로 옮기려 하십니다.The Lord seeks to move their gaze from earth to heaven, from death to life, from the Moses of the past to Himself in the present.

성경은 말씀 하십니다.Scripture says:

"나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 떡이니 사람이 이 떡을 먹으면 영생하리라" (51절)"I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever." (verse 51)

주님은 "내가 떡을 주겠다"라고 하지 않으십니다.The Lord does not say, 'I will give you bread.'

"내가 곧 생명의 떡이다"라고 선포하십니다.He declares, 'I myself am the bread of life.'

이것이 기독교의 핵심입니다.This is the heart of Christianity.

주님은 우리에게 무언가를 던져주시고 멀리 계신 분이 아니라, 당신 자신을 우리에게 통째로 주심으로 우리의 생명이 되시는 분입니다.The Lord is not one who tosses us something and remains far off; He becomes our life by giving His whole self to us.

예수 그리스도가 우리의 생명의 원천이며 근원이며 생명그자체가 되는 것입니다.Jesus Christ becomes the source and origin of our life—life itself.

그러나 이 말씀은 유대인들에게 충격이었습니다.But this saying was a shock to the Jews.

"자신이 곧 떡이라니, 자기를 먹으라니?" 그들이 수군거리며 거부감을 드러냅니다.'He himself is the bread? Eat him?' They murmured and showed their revulsion.

그러자 예수님은 물러서기는커녕 더욱 노골적이고 강력한 단어로 그들의 영혼을 타격하십니다.Yet far from backing down, Jesus strikes their souls with even more blunt and forceful words.

예수님은 처음에는 '먹다'라는 일반적인 단어 '파고(Phago)'를 사용하셨지만, 나중에는 '트로고(Trogo)'(54절)라는 단어로 바꾸십니다.At first Jesus used the ordinary word for 'eat,' 'phago,' but later He changes it to 'trogo' (verse 54).

성경은 말씀 하십니다.Scripture says:

내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 자는 영생을 가졌고 마지막 날에 내가 그를 다시 살리리니 (요 6:54)"Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:54)

내 살은 참된 양식이요 내 피는 참된 음료로다 (요 6:55)"For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed." (John 6:55)

이 단어는 짐승이 먹이를 먹듯이 "아드득 소리를 내어먹다", "격렬하게 먹다"라는 뜻입니다.This word means to 'gnaw' or 'chew noisily,' to 'eat fiercely,' the way an animal devours its food.

이렇게 강렬한 단어를 쓰신 주님의 의도는 분명합니다.The Lord's intent in using such an intense word is clear.

"나를 적당히 교양 있게 믿으려 하지 말라"는 것입니다.It is: 'Do not try to believe in me in a polite, half-hearted way.'

생명의 떡을 '감상'만 해서는 살 수 없습니다.You cannot live by merely 'admiring' the bread of life.

떡은 입에 넣고 씹어서, 삼키고 소화시켜 내 살과 피가 되게 해야 합니다.Bread must be put in the mouth, chewed, swallowed, and digested until it becomes my own flesh and blood.

마찬가지로 주님의 말씀도 우리는 씹어 소화해야 하며, 주님이 이 세상에 오신 그 이유도 알아야하며, 무엇보다 주님과 하나로 연합되어야 하는 것입니다.In the same way, we must chew and digest the Lord's word, know the reason He came into this world, and above all be united as one with Him.

그리고 그 과정은 우리의 삶을 통해 실제적으로 일어나야하는 것입니다.And that process must actually take place through our lives.

그렇다면 왜 이렇게 거친 표현을 쓰셨을까요?So why did He use such a harsh expression?

생명은 관념이 아니기 때문입니다.Because life is not an abstract idea.

예수님의 찢기신 살과 흘리신 피를 나의 것으로 온전히 받아들이고 온전히 주님을 믿을 때에만 영생을 얻을 수 있습니다.Only when we fully receive Jesus' torn flesh and shed blood as our own and fully believe in Him can we obtain eternal life.

이것은 장차 우리 주님께서 십자가에서 당하실 사건을 예고하심과 동시에, "주님의 십자가 고통이 사실은 내가 당해야 마땅한 나의 죄값이었음"을 뼈저리게 인정하고 받아들이라는 초청입니다.This both foretells what our Lord would suffer on the cross and is an invitation to acknowledge and accept, to the bone, that 'the agony of the Lord's cross was in fact the penalty for my sin, which I deserved to bear.'

십자가의 예수를 나의 존재 깊은 곳으로 삼키지 않고는 구원이 없다는 엄중한 선언입니다.It is a sobering declaration that there is no salvation without swallowing the crucified Jesus into the very depths of my being.

이 말씀이 요구하는 것은 '나라는 존재의 차원 변화'입니다.What this word demands is 'a transformation in the very dimension of my existence.'

내가 단순히 육체적 생존을 위해 밥을 먹어야 사는 존재에서, 이제는 예수 그리스도를, 그분의 말씀을, 그분의 영을 먹어야만 살아나는 '참된 영적 인간'으로 변화되라는 것입니다.It calls me to change from a being who lives merely by eating food for physical survival into a 'true spiritual person' who lives only by feeding on Jesus Christ, on His word, and on His Spirit.

육에 속한 자는 상상할 수 없는 영적인 초월의 차원으로 우리를 부르시는 것입니다.He is calling us into a dimension of spiritual transcendence that those who belong to the flesh cannot even imagine.

사랑하는 여러분, 복음이 때로 우리의 마음을 거스르고 불편하게 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.Beloved, this is precisely why the gospel sometimes goes against our hearts and makes us uncomfortable.

예수님은 우리가 원하는 것 그러니까 세상의 성공, 정치적 권력, 배부름을 주시는 분이 아니라, 우리에게 절실히 필요한 것들, 그러니까 대속의 죽음, 찢겨진 몸, 죄 사함과 영생을 주시는 분이기 때문입니다.For Jesus is not one who gives us what we want—worldly success, political power, full stomachs—but one who gives what we desperately need: His atoning death, His broken body, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life.

조금있으면 사라질 세상의 허무한것이 아니라 하나님 나라에 속한 영원한 것, 변하지 않는것, 생명의 진리를 주시는 분이시기 때문입니다.For He gives not the empty things of the world that soon vanish, but what belongs to the kingdom of God—the eternal, the unchanging, the truth of life.

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분,Beloved brothers and sisters,

오늘 이 엄중한 현실 앞에 서십시오.stand today before this sobering reality.

나의 욕망을 채워줄 떡이 아니라, 나를 살리실 예수님의 살과 피를 구하는 저와 여러분 되시길 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.May you and I seek not bread to satisfy our desires, but the flesh and blood of Jesus that give us life, I bless you in the name of the Lord.

걸러내심: 실패처럼 보이는 승리 (요 6:60–69)

이제 우리는 요한복음 6장의 절정에 서 있습니다.Now we stand at the climax of John chapter 6.

오병이어의 기적으로 시작된 이 장은 수만 명의 환호로 가득 찼지만, 끝에 다다라서는 쓸쓸한 바람만이 불고 있습니다.This chapter, which began with the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, was filled with the cheers of tens of thousands; but by its end, only a lonely wind is blowing.

예수님의 말씀은 마치 거대한 '거르는 체(Sieve)'와 같았습니다.Jesus' words were like an enormous 'sieve.'

수만 명의 군중이 주님을 따라왔지만, 6장의 마지막에 이르자 열두 제자를 제외하고는 아무도 주님 곁에 남아있지 않게 됩니다.Tens of thousands had followed the Lord, but by the end of chapter 6, no one remained at His side except the twelve disciples.

주님께서 선포하신 그 '어려운 말씀'이 껍데기뿐인 군중과 알곡 같은 제자를 가차 없이 걸러내셨기 때문입니다.For the 'hard saying' the Lord proclaimed ruthlessly sifted the hollow crowd from the disciples who were like good grain.

예수님께서 "내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시라"고 말씀하시자, 사람들은 수군거리며 떠나기 시작합니다. 그들은 "이 말씀이 어렵다(hard)"고 불평합니다.When Jesus said, 'Eat my flesh and drink my blood,' the people began to murmur and leave. They complained, 'This is a hard saying.'

이것은 주님의 말씀이 지적으로 난해해서 이해가 안 된다는 뜻이 아닙니다.This does not mean the Lord's word was intellectually too difficult to understand.

받아들이기 싫다는 뜻입니다.It means they did not want to accept it.

그들의 마음이 거부한 것입니다.Their hearts refused it.

그들이 기대했던 하나님과의 거래 조건, 즉 "우리가 당신께 충성할 테니, 당신은 우리의 왕이 되어 빵을 달라"는 그 계약이 깨졌기 때문입니다.For the bargain they had expected with God—'We will be loyal to you, so you become our king and give us bread'—had been broken.

그들은 예수님이라는 인격(Person)보다, 예수님이 주는 혜택(Benefit)을 원했던 철저한 '소비자'들이었습니다.They were thorough 'consumers' who wanted the benefit Jesus gave more than the person of Jesus Himself.

자신의 뜻대로, 자신의 요구를 들어줄 수 있는 지도자만을 원했던 것입니다.They wanted only a leader who would do their will and grant their demands.

여기서 우리는 놀라운 역설을 발견합니다.Here we discover a remarkable paradox.

요한복음 6장이 진행될수록 예수님이 누구신지, 영생의 비밀이 무엇인지가 점점 더 명확하게 드러납니다. 주님이 곧 하나님이시며, 생명의 떡이심이 선포됩니다.As John chapter 6 unfolds, it grows ever clearer who Jesus is and what the secret of eternal life is. It is proclaimed that the Lord is God Himself and the bread of life.

그러나 아이러니하게도 진리가 선명해질수록, 군중의 수는 수만 명에서 열두 명으로 급격히 줄어듭니다.Yet ironically, the clearer the truth became, the more sharply the crowd shrank—from tens of thousands to twelve.

사람들은 살아계신 하나님과 영생의 진리가 눈앞에 드러났음에도 도망쳤습니다.Even though the living God and the truth of eternal life were revealed before their eyes, the people fled.

그들에게는 영원한 생명보다 당장의 배고픔을 해결하는 것이 더 중요했기 때문입니다.For to them, solving their immediate hunger mattered more than eternal life.

썰물처럼 빠져나가는 군중을 뒤로하고 주님은 남은 열두 제자에게 묻습니다.With the crowd draining away like an ebbing tide behind Him, the Lord asks the twelve who remain,

"너희도 가려느냐?""Will ye also go away?"

이때 베드로의 대답은 기독교 역사상 가장 위대한 고백 중 하나입니다.Peter's answer here is one of the greatest confessions in the history of Christianity.

그는 "주님, 우리는 주님의 신학을 완벽히 이해했습니다"라고 하지 않았습니다.He did not say, 'Lord, we have understood your theology perfectly.'

또한 "주님의 말씀이 다 맞습니다"라며 맹목적인 아부를 하지도 않았습니다.Nor did he flatter blindly, saying, 'Everything you say is right.'

그는 단지 이렇게 고백합니다.He simply confesses this:

"주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까." (68절)"Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." (verse 68)

이것이 바로 제자들 마음에 심겨진 '겨자씨 같은 믿음'입니다.This is the 'mustard-seed faith' planted in the disciples' hearts.

비록 지금은 주님의 살과 피를 먹는다는 의미를 다 알지 못해도, 주님의 말씀 안에 진리가 있음을 영혼 깊이 느끼고 주님을 떠나지 않는 것,Though they did not yet fully understand what it meant to eat the Lord's flesh and blood, they sensed deep in their souls that truth was in His word, and so they did not leave Him—

내 계획보다 주님의 말씀을 더 신뢰하는 것입니다.trusting the Lord's word more than their own plans.

훗날 예수님께서 십자가에서 정말로 살이 찢기시고 피를 쏟으신 후에야, 그리고 부활 승천하시어 성령이 오신 후에야 제자들은 이 말씀의 참뜻을 깨달았습니다.Only later—after Jesus' flesh was truly torn and His blood truly poured out on the cross, and after His resurrection and ascension when the Holy Spirit came—did the disciples grasp the true meaning of this word.

십자가 사건을 지나고 나서야, 어떻게 주님의 살과 피가 생명의 근원이 되는지, 우리가 주님을 먹는다는 것이 어떤 연합의 신비인지 비로소 깨닫게 된 것입니다.Only after passing through the cross did they finally understand how the Lord's flesh and blood become the source of life, and what mystery of union it is that we feed on Him.

그제야 그들은 영원한 생명을 맛보며 감격했습니다.Only then did they taste eternal life and overflow with emotion.

세상의 눈으로 볼 때 요한복음 6장은 목회의 실패처럼 보입니다.By the world's eyes, John chapter 6 looks like a ministry failure.

수만 명이 떠나고 고작 열둘이 남았기 때문입니다.For tens of thousands left, and only twelve remained.

하지만 주님은 그 '남은 자'들의 겨자씨 같은 믿음을 통해 교회를 세우시고, 온 세상을 뒤덮는 부흥을 일으키셨습니다.But through the mustard-seed faith of those 'remnant' ones, the Lord built His church and raised up a revival that would cover the whole world.

그것이 바로 우리가 너무나 잘 아는 위대한 초대 교회의 시작입니다.That is the beginning of the great early church that we know so well.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 이해되지 않는 고난이나 상황 속에서도 주님을 떠나지 마십시오.Beloved saints, even amid suffering or circumstances you cannot understand, do not leave the Lord.

다 이해해서 믿는 것이 아닙니다. 주님이 생명이시기에 붙드는 것입니다.We do not believe because we understand it all. We hold on because the Lord is life.

오늘도 "우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까"라고 고백하며 주님 곁을 지키는 그 겨자씨 같은 믿음이, 마침내 승리하게 될 줄 믿습니다.I believe that the mustard-seed faith which today confesses, 'To whom shall we go?' and stays by the Lord's side will in the end be victorious.

결론 및 결단: 갈 곳이 없는 자들의 행복한 고백

사랑하는 여러분, 오늘 설교를 마무리하며 우리는 요한복음 6장의 그 산 위, 수만의 군중 속에 바로 저와 여러분이 서 있음을 깨달아야 합니다.Beloved, as we close today's sermon, we must realize that it is you and I who stand on that mountain in John chapter 6, in the midst of the crowd of tens of thousands.

이것은 2천 년 전의 이야기가 아닙니다.This is not a story of two thousand years ago.

주님은 지금도 이 시간, 당신의 말씀으로 우리를 흔들고 계십니다.Even now, at this very moment, the Lord is shaking us with His word.

우리가 알곡인지 쭉정인지, 소비자인지 제자인지, 지금 우리를 말씀이라는 체로 걸러내고 계신 것입니다.He is sifting us right now through the sieve of His word—whether we are grain or chaff, consumers or disciples.

오늘 주님께서 던지시는 "너희도 가려느냐?"라는 질문 앞에, 우리가 붙잡아야 할 세 가지 결단이 있습니다.Before the question the Lord throws to us today—'Will you also go away?'—there are three resolutions we must hold fast.

첫째, 여러분의 '믿음'이 과연 어떤 믿음인지를 점검하십시오.First, examine what kind of 'faith' yours really is.

수많은 무리가 왜 떠났습니까?Why did the great crowds leave?

그들은 예수님이 자신들의 기대—정치적 해방과 배부름—를 거절하셨을 때 미련 없이 등을 돌렸습니다.When Jesus refused their expectations—political liberation and full stomachs—they turned their backs without a second thought.

우리에게도 그런 선이 있습니까?Do we too have such a line?

"주님, 제가 이만큼 기도했는데 왜 응답하지 않으십니까?", "내가 이렇게 봉사했는데 왜 내 삶은 여전히 어렵습니까?"'Lord, I prayed this much—why don't you answer?' 'I served this much—why is my life still hard?'

만약 주님이 당신의 성공과 안녕을 거절하신다면, 당신도 떠나시겠습니까?If the Lord refuses your success and well-being, will you also leave?

주님이 나의 '소원 성취'라는 도구가 아니라, '나의 주인'이 되심을 고백할 때, 우리는 이 한계선을 넘어설 수 있습니다.Only when we confess that the Lord is not a tool for 'fulfilling my wishes' but 'my Master' can we cross this limit.

나의 뜻이 아니라 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지는 것이 나를 위해서도 최선입니다.It is best even for me that not my will but God's will be done.

하나님이 나의 인생의 계획을 만드시기 때문입니다.For God is the one who designs the plan of my life.

그러므로 주님이 내 뜻대로 움직이지 않으셔도, 주님은 여전히 옳으십니다.Therefore, even when the Lord does not move according to my will, He is still right.

둘째, '소비자'에서 '참된 성도'로 변화되십시오.Second, be transformed from a 'consumer' into a 'true saint.'

교회는 영적 서비스를 받는 곳이 아닙니다.The church is not a place to receive spiritual services.

예수님은 우리의 필요를 채워주는 자판기가 아닙니다.Jesus is not a vending machine that dispenses our needs.

물론 우리 주님은 자녀들의 필요를 채워 주십니다. 우리 주님은 광야에 만나와 네추라기로 자녀들을 살려주시는 분이십니다.Of course, our Lord does meet His children's needs. He is the one who kept His children alive with manna and quail in the wilderness.

하지만 그것이 다가 아닙니다.But that is not all.

우리는 주님이 주실 수 있는 최상의 것, 영원한 생명에 목말라야 합니다.We must thirst for the highest thing the Lord can give—eternal life.

"주님, 메마른 내 영혼을 주님의 생명으로 채워주십시오"라고 간구해야 합니다.We must plead, 'Lord, fill my parched soul with your life.'

그러므로 우리는 우리의 영적인 목마름에 민감해야 합니다.Therefore we must be sensitive to our spiritual thirst.

세상의 떡은 먹어도 다시 배고프지만, 주님이 주시는 생명은 우리를 영원히 살게하시기 때문입니다.For the world's bread leaves us hungry again, but the life the Lord gives makes us live forever.

이제 혜택을 구하는 신앙에서, 주님 그분 전체을 구하는 신앙으로 나아가십시오.Now move from a faith that seeks benefits to a faith that seeks the whole of the Lord Himself.

우리가 주님을 구할 때 주님이 우리를 위해 설계하신 우리의 삶의 다음 단계로 들어갈 수 있기 때문입니다.For when we seek the Lord, we can enter the next stage of life that He has designed for us.

그러므로 밥을 달라고 보채는 어린아이의 신앙을 넘어, 주님의 살과 피를 먹고 마시며 주님과 하나 되는 성숙한 제자가 되십시오.So go beyond the faith of a child whining for food, and become a mature disciple who eats and drinks the Lord's flesh and blood and is made one with Him.

마지막으로 호소합니다. 주님 곁에 머무십시오.Finally, I appeal to you: stay by the Lord's side.

때로는 주님의 뜻이 도무지 이해되지 않을 때가 있습니다.Sometimes the Lord's will simply cannot be understood.

고난의 이유를 알 수 없고, 하나님의 침묵이 길게 느껴져 마음이 무너질 때가 있습니다.There are times when we cannot know the reason for our suffering, and God's silence feels so long that our hearts collapse.

그러나 그때, 베드로처럼 고백하십시오.But in that moment, confess as Peter did.

우리의 지성으로 다 납득할 수 없어도, 우리의 상황이 변하지 않아도, 우리는 갈 곳이 없습니다.Even when our minds cannot fully comprehend, even when our circumstances do not change, we have nowhere else to go.

왜냐하면 생명이 오직 주님께만 있기 때문입니다.Because life is found in the Lord alone.

"주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까.""Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."

이 고백이 저와 여러분의 마지막 고백이 되기를 바랍니다.May this confession be the final confession of you and me.

주님의 말씀을 하나님의 뜻을 우리가 다 이해해서 믿는 것이 아닙니다.We do not believe the Lord's word and God's will because we understand it all.

주님이 생명이시기에 붙드는 것입니다.We hold on because the Lord is life.

그 겨자씨 같은 믿음 하나면 충분합니다.That one mustard-seed faith is enough.

하나님께서는 우리의 겨자씨같은 믿음을 사용하셔서 이 세상을 바꾸시고 우리의 인생을 바꾸시기 때문입니다.For God uses our mustard-seed faith to change this world and to change our lives.
